Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

Welcome to my Tuesday chat. Let's get started, Tiger is in the field this week at the Memorial on a high after winning the Players.

Shosheak (the couch)

Tiger has 4 wins this year, he loves Memorial, he's paired with Freddie. This seems insane but are 9/4 odds to high?

Farrell Evans
  (3:01 PM)

Shosheak,I'm not a gambler so I'm not conversant in the odds business, but I do know that Tiger will be hard to beat this week. Obviously, he's had great success at Muirfield with five wins. So you should fully expect him to win. It's a good bet.

shosheak (kitchen countertop)

Farrell, I know you are a big believer in Rory. Has your confidence been shaken at all? It seems Rory is unable to turn down his hyper-aggression and can't seem to "eliminate those silly mistakes." (read: double bogeys, water balls, penalty shots). I don't see him turning things around -- he excels in soft, benign conditions (see both majors he won) but that's about it.

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

Not at all. Rory just has to settle down a bit. He's changing clubs, balls, driver and now agent. The wealth, the girl and the fame have gotten in the way of that kid just trying to win tournaments. Now when he plays well, its despite all the distractions.

Thomas J. (Park Ridge, IL)

I know we're still a few weeks out from the US Open, but I was wondering how Merion is looking? Is it underwater? I thought I remember reading something about a disaster option where a few holes from the other course would have to be used because of flooding. Are we even close to that option coming up?

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

Fortunately, nothing like that has happened yet. It's still two weeks away though.

Joel Fenkell (Florida)

Farrell, I have been a Tiger fan and believer since he came on the scene. I truly believe he will end up with around 120 tour wins and 25-27 majors when he is done. People tell me I am crazy, which they would have if I said he would have 78 tour wins at age 37. However if he plays for another 18 years he just needs .6 majors per year and 2.5 wins per year to get to those totals. Thoughts on my prediction?

Farrell Evans
  (3:07 PM)

Joel,You can just deal with the next ten years. That's 40 major and close to 200 tournaments. He will easily get over a 100 wins and at least 20 majors.

stuart (oklahoma)

Should anchor putter take heat from fans/media if they decide to continue anchoring?

Farrell Evans
  (3:09 PM)

No, anchoring is legal until January 2016. Players should by all means take advantage of the rules. Remember these guys are doing this for a living.

kane (iowa )

Rickie Fowler seems to have all the ability needed to win but seems to have trouble having 4 solid rounds. do you think his failure to have 4 solid rounds in a row is his biggest problem?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Kane,Look at Rickie's swing? It requires a lot of timing. He's going to be a streaky throughout his career. Give him some time to learn how to be more consistent. But he has all the game to win a lot of tournaments.

Jim (stuck at work)

What kind of reaction will Sergio receive when he returns to the states?

Farrell Evans
  (3:14 PM)

Jim,Thankfully, for Sergio there won't be massive crowds at Merion simply because the place won't hold them. But I think the fans will be respectable. Sure, there will be a few FRIED CHICKENS yelled, but he won't be bothered much on the golf course. Now when he goes to Chicago, New York or Boston it will be a different story. And the players will be encouraging and polite toward him.

stuart (oklahoma)

I do not like the "these guys are doing this for a living" argument on anchoring....The gov changes laws all the time which effects peoples income.....I say man up and put the long putter in the closet.

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Stuart, what I'm saying is that the players who anchor will not jeopardize their standings or chance to win tournaments by going to a new method before they are ready. They have two and half years.

Shosheak (the couch)

Rickie has made 10/12 cuts this year with 3 top 10's, most players on tour would love that kind of consistency. Our consistency expectations are out of whack.

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Shosheak,Good point. But Rickie Fowler doesn't have problems making cuts. He's an established elite player. There is this next level that he aspires to of contending every time he tees it up in a tournament.

Shosheak (the couch)

As long as its legal guys are fine to anchor. The guys suing though is a bit much. Rules change, if you can't remain on tour without anchoring that just means you're taking the place of someone else's ability to make a living

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

No one is going to sue. There is not broad support for that. The tour thought that it could change the minds of the USGA and R& A by getting the world's best players to lobby against the ban. It didn't work.

Matt (Tampa)

Does Tiger win a major this year? Will it be the U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship, or all three?

Farrell Evans
  (3:19 PM)

Matt,TW had to win a major. Can imagine him winning 8 or 9 times without a major?

Nelson (DE)

Once the new anchoring ban takes effect, how many guys do you think will still use a longer putter but without anchoring illegally?

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Nelson,The long putter guys will move the putter end off their bodies and get some of the same results. The long putter is still a great advantage in putting over a conventional length.

Andrew (WI)

I wonder if someone will try and play the same type of card Casey Martin played to get to ride a golf cart - that there's some kind of medical reason that makes the belly punter essential to his continuing to play. Probably a loose comparison, but it's out there...

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Andrew,Tim Clark already claims a congenital issue that doesn't left him supinate his hands. But he can swing a golf club with his hands away from his body.

Shosheak (the couch)

Which players contend every time they tee it up? (Tiger excepted). Kuchar has 5 top 10's in 13 starts, Justin Rose 3 in 7. Rickie has a tendency towards the high number - but he also makes a bunch of birdies. Rickie could stand to win more, but if you end up with a top 10 in 1/3 of your starts that's pretty consistent even for elite on pga tour.

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

Shosheak,The bottom line is that the very best know how to contend on weeks when their ball striking is off. Rickie is not quite there yet.

Nick (Canada)

Do you think maybe the PGA Tour should force top 20 players to play at least once a year one of lesser tier events like the colonial?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

Nick,The Tour could try that but then they would be getting into the business of telling independent contractors when and where they can go. And the tour doesn't want to own the players. That kind of arrangement would mean that the tour would have to take more responsibility for the livelihoods of the players. Right now you miss a cut, you don't get paid a dime.

Keith H (Seattle)

Farrell, it seems Stricker's reduced schedule is agreeing with him. Whenever he comes out now, he's a real threat. Do you think he'll get enough points to make the President's Cup?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

I don't see a scenario where he wouldn't get a captain's pick.

john (watching caddyshack)

Anyway we can get a threesome in the us open of tiger, scott, and sergio.....that would be amazing!

Farrell Evans
  (3:28 PM)

That would be great. Tiger and Adam might talk. But there would be a lot of silence in that group.

Kevin (cubicle)

'sheak -- top 10s don't mean anything by themselves, they must be taken with context. For example, with the exception of the Texas Open, so far this season Rory has been the king of the backdoor top 10. He is miles back heading into an early morning Sunday tee time, fires a good number in calmer / easier conditions than the leaders will face when they tee off a good 3 hours later, and gets credit for a top 10. I believe him and Sergio tied at the Players, but Sergio was actually there with a real chance to win on Sunday afternoon (while Rory meanwhile was most likely air born en route to some exotic locale with his GF). These two results are not the same. Top 10 is just a round number, the statistic by itself is mostly useless to me without context.

Ken (VA)

David Duval is going to qualify for the US Open next Monday and he is going to place top 10 in Memphis at next weekends PGA event. He's back!

Farrell Evans
  (3:29 PM)

Ken,I hope you are right about Duval, But what are you basing these hopes on? Has he made a cut all year?

Joel (Florida)

Farrell, Tiger not included: What player do you see winning the most tour events the next 5 years and what is that total number? I like Kuchar, Snedeker, or Schwartzel.....

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Sneds. He's rock solid. He's keeps it simple and he's only going to get better with his emotions.

Tom (Verona, WI)

How much do you love Twitter? How else would we know what Jeff Overton thinks about being DQ'd!

Jim (stuck at work)

I know Tiger is the big favorite for the US Open regardless of what he does this week. Who else should we watch out for?

Farrell Evans
  (3:33 PM)

Rory, Matt Kuchar and here is a wildcard, David Lingmerth, the young swede who nearly won the Players. He played well at Colonial with a tie for 18th.

Steve (my house)

Will even par be good enough to win the US Open this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

According to Webb Simpson, there are 13 holes where you can birdies. Then five really tough holes. I can see 2 or 3 under winning but just a handful guys around par. I think the USGA knows how to make this happen.

Joel (Florida)

Michelle Wie's putting stance has me LAUGHING. How do you feel about it and in 3 years do you think she has the same stance?

Farrell Evans
  (3:35 PM)

Joel,I recently went to the claw and it's done wonders for my putting. Wie is scary to watch. it's comical. I feel for her. It must be hard for her instructor and family see her unravel as a serious player.

Keith (PA)

Which of the remaining 3 majors should I be watching for Sergio to compete in? My guess is if he were to have a chance itd be at the British

Farrell Evans
  (3:37 PM)

Keith,Sergio is a great ball striker. He can continue at all three of the remaining majors. If he doesn't let Tiger or other demons get in his head, he can overtake any golf course, no matter its quirks.

Ken (VA)

Simply hope; and a twitter photo he posted that shows the progress he has made in his swing. Has been spending a lot of time with Kuchar's coach in Texas and is bringing back the 'old' Duval swing. Biggest obstacle that remains...the mental hurdle of taking the range to the course and scoring.

Chris (Chicago)

Hey Farrell! Do you think Tiger takes a trip to Merion Monday?

Farrell Evans
  (3:38 PM)

Besides playing in the four majors and playing in Arnie and Jack's tournaments, I never try with any certain to know Tiger's schedule.

shosheak (couch)

I was slightly shocked to hear some of the Euros' comments after MCing at Wentworth. Poulter and McIlroy seemed indifferent to their performances and were instead openly eager to reap the rewards of their fame by attending the Monaco Grand Prix, the Champions League final and the French Open. To me, these comments do not represent a winning attitude. Can you imagine Tiger or Phil ever being excited about the prospect of having an open weekend?

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

Sure they would enjoy an open weekend. What are they going to do ? Sit around and sulk over a missed cut. Life is too short for that.

Joel (Florida)

TIGER IS AT MERION TODAY. My buddy who caddies there saw him on the second hole even though the course is closed today.

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

I guarantee he's working on that stinger.

Alex (San Diego)

what is the main thing Rickie Fowler needs to change to start getting better results were consistently?

Farrell Evans
  (3:41 PM)

i don't know that with his swing he will ever be uber consistent like Tiger, say for example. But that's ok. Rickie owns his swing!

Shosheak (the couch)

Rory's gf is at the french open, what you want him to be upset about not seeing her?

Aaron (Wisco)

Adam Scott said he was going to continue to use a long putter after the ban. Is that still possible? What is the pentaly for using an anchored stroke?

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Aaron,Adam is just going to move the butt end of the putter off his chair a hair as to not anchor it. But he will move it much the same way as he does presently. Players are learning that anchoring is as much as practice tool--a way to think about using the body in the stroke-- as it is an actual element of performance.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Players who played Golf in College Last Year is now in the PGA?

Farrell Evans
  (3:44 PM)

Chris,There are too many to list.

Steve (my house)

I know that most people favorite tournament is the Masters but the US Open has always been my favorite. Where do you rank the US Open on your list of favorites?

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Steve,This is a sensitive question. Depth of field-wise, no one compares to the PGA and that field would be even stronger if it didn't have the 20-odd club pros. I would place the U.S. Open ahead of the British Open but behind the Masters, which is just so unique.

Joel F (Florida)

Farrell, just to let you know my best buddy caddies at Merion. Golf course is usually closed on Monday but they closed it today because of the holiday. My buddy said he saw Tiger on hole 2 of the East course where the Open will be played at shortly while he was on the West course playing. Figured this would be valuable info for the golf community to know Tiger is GEARING UP.

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

Merion is a quirky little course. Tiger is probably really grinding over its nuances. He doesn't like to miss anything in his preparation.

Chris (Chicago)

What gets a fan tossed at a tournament? You know the crowds will be rough on Sergio - but how much does a player take before getting a fan tossed?

Farrell Evans
  (3:50 PM)

Chris,A fan cannot taunt a player or take pictures or talk on their phones in earshot of the players while they are playing. If Sergio ignores any taunting there won't be much hassle from security, but you should count on him having a detail for the remainder of the year.

Alex (San Diego)

Do you believe the super talented Brits (westwood, donald, ect.) inherently have something wrong with their mental game, that they cannot perform their best on the biggest stage?the only one I can really think is exempt from this right now is G mac

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

Alex,No, I don't believe there is anything inherently wrong with their mental makeups. What I believe is that they haven't handled the pressure as well as they could have in certain situations.

Andrew (WI)

More likely scenario for Sergio at Merion: Top 10 or 80-85-MC blowup?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Sergio needs a little mercy from us. I hope it comes in the form of a good finish at Merion.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Apparently a fan cannot be tossed for wearing deer antlers.

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Correct.

Bill (work)

Call me crazy but I want well-compensated athletes to care about winning more than having an open weekend and some R&R with the GF. The Euros (Poulter, Westwood, Rory) seem to enjoy giggling on Twitter and flying off to the next exotic locale. I wish they would pretend to care a bit more, maybe work on their games, and WIN SOMETHING for a change.

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

Bill,They care a lot but it's bad for your game to let a missed cut linger in your mind. I have had some of my best interviews with players immediately after they missed a cut.

Shosheak (the couch)

Call me crazy, but I want to see good golf at the us open more than 3 guys not speaking to each other. And I think Tiger, Sergio and Adam are all more likely to play well if not grouped with each other. Honestly it's almost a punishment, and not sure any of them (maybe outside of Sergio) deserve that. Thanks for the chat

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Well said. It would be fun to see Sergio and Tiger grouped together on the weekend at Merion.

Ed (Long Island)

Why no Phil this week?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Phil is playing in Memphis. He likes to play the week before a major. To play Memorial would mean doing three in a row.

Nick (Canada)

If Tiger gets to nine wins this year and one major. What year is would be considered better this year or 2000?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

2013 because of all the stuff he's been through in the last couple of years.

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Look forward to chatting with you next at Merion. Stay tuned and enjoy the golf this week.

Mike (Orlando)

Do you like the 18 hole playoff they have at the US Open? I've never been a fan of that and prefer the sudden death they do at the Masters.

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Mike,The 18-hole playoff should go but it's one of the things that makes the US Open unique.Peace.
