Hey guys, welcome to this week's HornsNation chat. Texas hosted its first summer camp on Sunday and has a second one coming up this week. There's plenty to talk about with recruiting and the football season ahead, plus whatever else is on your mind. Bring on the questions.
Who do you see as the next committ
Dallas Skyline DE Victor Evans. I think that one happens soon.
Hey Max, thanks for the great coverage of the camp this weekend! With three DE commitments already, how many do you actually think Texas will take? Are they laying all the eggs in one basket with Solomon Thomas, or will they continue chasing others (Victor Evans and Andrew Williams comes to mind)?
First of all, it's worth noting that Jake McMillon is being taken as a DT now. So Texas has 2 DEs in Sione Teuhema and Derick Roberson. The two guys the staff really liked at camp on Sunday were Evans and a sleeper, Temple's James Judie. Keep an eye on those two. From talking to sources, I can say with confidence that no matter what Texas is holding a spot for Solomon Thomas, whenever he decides.
What up Max! Now that Overstreet is changing positions, do you see him throwing out of the backfield on designed toss sweeps or flea flickers?
Yeah, definitely, I think that's an option. It'll be interesting to see how much Applewhite likes to run trick plays like Bryan Harsin did. Overstreet is a guy with a lot of versatility and it makes sense to find a way to put the ball in his hand more instead of making him QB #4 or 5.
In a previous edition of the Heard, there was something about Trey Quinn. Does he plan to visit Texas or he pretty much going to LSU like everyone including me thinks?
It's a possibility you could see him at UT camp, and personally I would love to. From everything I've heard Quinn must be ridiculously good. I think the expectation is still that he ends up at LSU in the end, though he did attend the Texas spring game.
Do you think the staff is going to wait to have Dixon at camp or possibly the Koda Martin decision to offer Anthony Jones? I just dont want this to end up like Vincent Taylor from last year when he would have commited with an offer..
Anthony Jones is a tricky situation. I don't think he helped himself that much at camp Sunday, honestly. His speed and his grades are both legitimate concerns and that's why he hasn't been offered. I think it's a situation where they just are having a hard time finding a TE they like right now.
When is everyone going to come to their senses and see that Texas will be national champs?
January 6, 2014.
Hey Max,Who do you thing will win the back up quarterback spot
Let me put it this way: I think Case McCoy is the guy they put in when the game is close and Ash is struggling or hurt - the emergency option. I think Tyrone Swoopes will be the guy who gets mop-up duty in the 4th quarter. I do not think Swoopes redshirts, and I think getting so many reps this summer with McCoy gone benefits him tremendously.
Just want to say thank you to ut & dobbs for waking up a sleeping giant....and killing the big 12. See you in the cotton bowl for your annual stomping!
Thanks for sharing!
Hey max. Say Dylan mack does pick texas a&m does that mean the fab 5 goes there to. I know two of them or texas lean and one does not have an offer from texas. Thanks for all your hard work you and the staff.
Even if Daylon Mack goes to A&M, I still think Malik Jefferson ends up at Texas and there's a good chance Larry Pryor Jr. does too.
Is there any stopping the A&M recruiting machine? Kyle Allen was a huge get for Sumlin and provides the Aggies with a potentailly solid, if not star, quarterback after Manziel leaves.
Texas A&M is in position to sign Kenny Hill, Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray. That's a pretty darn good 3-year run.
What incoming freshmen do you expect to redshirt?
Good question. Right now I think the most likely candidates are Erik Huhn and Deoundrei Davis because of their knee injuries, and possibly Warrick (or Meander) and Collins. I'm on the fence about Hughes, he could be a special teams guy.
How do you think Searls has done at OL?
Great at recruiting them, that's for sure. I think we'll really see what kind of coach he is this season now that the line is stocked with guys he chose.
Gut feelings on Jamal Adams and Solomon Thomas?
A question from Omaha? Love it. Gut feeling is, well, I'll hedge: I think Texas lands one of them but not both. If Texas is wins the Big 12 this year and has a terrific season, maybe both.
Is it possible for even more pressure to now be on Mack Brown and the football program given the mediocrity of Longhorn sports 2012-13?
Lot of pressure, sure. I think he puts pressure on himself, too, because he wants to go out on top someday.
Many are concerned with the scheduling of Ole Miss on LHN. I am more concerned with the Thanksgiving game being on FS1. This is the one day the Longhorns are featured and it is on a experimental network???
Well, yeah, I guess that's a fair point. Hadn't really thought about that much.
What game are you most looking forward to that will be played at DKR this year?
Oklahoma State, then probably Ole Miss, but that's just because of all their elite recruits coming in and a healthy respect for Bo Wallace.
Any news on offers after the first camp?
The first offer has gone out to La Grange 2014 OL Zachary Ledwik. Actually got off the phone with him right before this chat began, we'll have a story up on HornsNation about him this afternoon.
How do you feel Jeremy did at the Texas camp? Do you feel like he's being a little under recruited?
Jeremy Jones looked good to me and I do think he's a BCS quarterback, especially when he puts on some weight in college. Don't think he's a take at Texas, though.
Do you know when the ARMY game roster and the ESPN300 will be released?
The ESPN300 will be out in a few weeks. I can't speak to the Army game, we run the Under Armour Game.
Question also posted in the forum: Will LHN availability ever expand? Have you heard anything about it? Thanks Max-Fan who doesnt want to miss the Ole Miss game
Listen, you know I can only say so much as someone in my position. But this is all about leverage. Texas and ESPN can't sway a hard bargainer like Time Warner Cable without controlling appealing, must-see games like this one. If this is what it takes to strike a deal with those cable companies, you'll be thankful by kickoff.
Is Texas a Dark Horse for the national championship if David Ash has a good year?
Will the Texas College Baseball team go to the College World Series?
In honor of the NBA Finals beginning Thursday, give me your starting five you would roll out from the current roster if they played hoops.
Ooh, this is a good one. Forgive me for those I've omitted, I didn't cover all these guys in high school. This lineup is all about power:PG: Johnathan GraySG: Mike DavisSF: Tyrone SwoopesPF: Jackson JeffcoatC: Desmond Harrison
If Mack Brown wins 10 games, but fails to either win the conference or beat OU, will he return?
Yep, can't see him losing his job in that situation.
Also, feel free to send in your basketball lineup suggestions. I love that question.
Both Texas and Texas A&M have two of the deepest running back groups in the nation. Which is the more talented group and which will produce the most this season?
If you factor in Manziel's rushing totals then A&M probably gets the edge statistically. For Texas, it all depends on whether they can stay healthy.
WILL THE OTHER SHIPLEY MAKE IT FARTHER IN THE PROS THEN HIS BROTHER
Also why is Texas recruiting QBs in 2015 if they already have Swoopes and Heard
Because you've got to stay ahead. Plus, there's a ton of great options and no super obvious choice in-state, hence the extra time scouting and evaluating.
how many secondary players do you see texas taking in this class. and how will that effect the numbers of the 2015 class dbs and safeties
I see them taking 3-4 in this class. It'll really depend on how the 2013 class ends up in my mind - is Huhn a LB? Is Meander a safety? Does Chevoski Collins end up on offense? The more those guys shift around, the more need in this class. That's what it's hard to project for 2015.
Your thoughts on Edwin Freeman as a player? How much longer will he wait?
Really liked what I saw from him at Texas camp. He worked as a linebacker at Nike camp in April and I thought that was a more natural fit, but then I saw him this weekend. Dude has some great tools and defends passes well. He impressed me more than I'd expected.
How are you doing max. Will Dillion bates visit one of the camps or will he have his on weekend to visit texas
Haven't heard anything to suggest Dillon Bates will be in Austin for camp. With Texas already having 3 LBs, I still think they're interested in Bates but more likely he ends up in SEC country.
Who do you think will be the first major program to offer the other Foreman brother. Why doesn't Texas just offer, and know they'll get Armanti as well
Good question. If he comes to Texas camp this weekend - and I think he might - he'll have to make a big impression. I just think these program want to see more from him in camp and during his senior season before they offer.
I know this is past tense but, why was Diaz allowed to keep his job after what he allowed to happen to the defense last year?
Because Mack believes Manny can turn it around. Simple as that.
How many 2015 qbs will be offered should we see those offers go out next week after this weekends camp?
I think you'll see a few 2015 QB offers go out by the end of the month. The two guys who probably get offered in my opinion are Ricky Town and Jarrett Stidham. Keep an eye on those two.
What is Texas going to have to do to get arrion springs seems like they have pulled out all the stops and he still has Oregon on top. What reasons has he said as to why he likes Oregon? Has he even visited there?
Texas and Oregon are tied at this point at the top of his list. He's never visited Oregon but he will this summer. He just really likes that program and their secondary coach and the prestige the Ducks have built up in recent years.
With commitments from 2 of Fournette's teammates, do you think that would have any affect on his recruitment?
If he comes down to Texas camp with Jermaine Roberts later this month, that would be pretty big. But right now, no, I don't see that playing a huge role in his decision just yet.
With Kabongo turning pro combined with the transfers leaving the program, is Barnes essentially a lame duck coach at this point? I don't see any way in which this season goes much better than last.
I have a hard time understanding how they are going to turn around their recruiting, personally. Elite guys don't care about playing for UT like they used to.
Will Jovan Pruitt or Ty Barrett end up in Burnt Orange?
My current projection: No and no. I think Barrett ends up at OU. I'm not sure about Pruitt yet.
is byu a trap game will the horns prevail
It's a trap game, yes. I still think Texas wins.
The staff has been searching all over the country for a second running back in this class. Do you think Texas gets its second running back from out of state or goes with an in state option?
I think it's an in-state guy next. Columbus' Royce Caldwell made a strong impression at camp this weekend.
Alot has been made about who made it to camp. Have y'all spoken to guys like darrion Johnson to find out why he didn't?
No word on why Darrion didn't. I wasn't surprised. He can be...unpredictable.
Why do you think Mack is perceived as old when nick Saban isn't? They're the same age.
True or False, Bo Pellini and Mack Brown will keep their jobs after this season?
True and true.
who will be getting more playing time at linebacker this year between peter jenkins and Dalton Santos? i know we will most likely play 2 LBs at a time with the spread offenses in the big 12
I think right now the answer is both. Texas coaches expect an awful lot of Steve Edmond right now so maybe give the edge to Jinkens.
I'll answer a couple more. Keep sending em in.
What?s up Max!! Hey is it just me or does Eric Huhn seem to be one of the more impressive specimens to come through for only being a freshman? The kid looks (physically) like he is going to be just fine on this level. Your thoughts?
Yeah, I think Erik is going to get a shot. When I first met him and watched him in 7-on-7 I thought his future was an an outside linebacker, but he could end up being a real nice hybrid option too.
I will be making my first Longhorns game against Ole Miss this year. What are your thought on the game & What is the best BBQ joint in town? Got to eat good before the game :)
It's going to be a great game, but it won't be better than the meal you eat at Franklin BBQ on Friday or Saturday. Be sure to get there around 9 a.m. (I'm absolutely not joking.)
I would like to see the Horns head to the Big Ten. It's a great match culturally, academically, traditionally, and athletically. The Big12 is dying and losing it's traditional pull. What do you think of this idea?
Not a fan of that proposal, personally. I just don't think Texas benefits much, especially when it means breaking away from its in-state peers in the Big 12.
I am so excited for Jalen Overstreet to get some playing time. He is real solid athlete at 6'3" 215 pounds and should be pretty versatile. I think he could be a huge asset in WR/HB passes with that arm he has. Would have been such a waste to watch him on the sidelines for 4 years watching Ash/Swoopes/Heard play QB. What are your thoughts on the move? Is he better suited at WR/HB or playing safety?
Exactly. If the guy isn't starting anytime soon, you've got to give him a chance to prove his value in another role. I like the move.
I know there was mixup on tony brown yesterday. Have you spoken to him and does he have any plans to visit?
He didn't visit yesterday and doesn't have one planned for the near future. Mostly focusing on track right now. He's a guy who doesn't really schedule these things, he just makes trips out of the blue, so it's hard to know when he'll be at UT next.
Which Texas class will end up being the highest rated: 2014 or 2015. I'm liking the early interest from elite guys from 2015 myself.
I think 2015 has a chance to be even better, definitely. Especially if they land Soso Jamabo and Malik Jefferson, which seems likely at this point.
OK guys, that's all I've got for today. Thanks for your time and questions. Be sure to stay tuned to HornsNation.com for the latest on the Longhorns. Have a great day.
