Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:02 PM)

Hey gang, thanks as always for stopping by. Blatant and expected plug for my new book - Fantasy Life - which comes out soon. If you pre-order it, you get lots of extra cool exclusive things no one else gets. Goto FantasyLifethebook.com for info. Let's get to it - as always, all subjects answered.

Jeff (Hendersonville)

I'm confused...you say the quality RB depth so shallow, but you are saying draft them "early and often". What gives?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:03 PM)

What's confusing about that? There's about a dozen or so RB that you feel good about, after that it gets ugly and uglier, so you wanna get them early before they run out. (Heh. Run out. Running backs.)

Mike (min)

When do the fantasy football live drafts start?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:05 PM)

Not sure but usually around mid June if not before. Mock draft lobbies are already open and you can sign up leagues

Mitch (yo)

Who won this trade? First guy got Cole Hamels, second guy got Fransisco Liriano?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:06 PM)

Really? Step up the questions gang.

Zach (Southie)

TMR,I joined a Fantasy Football league about 5 years ago at the request of a college buddy to fill the 10th and final slot. I have never met 7 of the other 9 players in our league. Through the course of trade discussions and proposals, I began exchanging texts with one of the guys. we've built up a solid friendship, even live in the same city but in the 5 years ive been in the league, ive literally never met the kid in person. we call it the "Manti T'eo Effect." is this weird?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:07 PM)

Only if he tuns out to actually be a woman and you cry about his fake death. Thenit's a bit hacky.

Teddy (Minneapolis)

Best stash Gausman, Cingrani, Z.Wheeler, K.Gibso: I know Gausman is up but he'd be sitting on the bench for the next start after his last start

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

I say Cingrani - he's the guy who has had success in Majors this year and Dusty will ruin a Reds pitcher sooner or later. He's just gotta! No idea when Wheeler or Gibson are up - I expect both this year and rank them in that order but ...I go Tony.

Adam (La )

What does the 06010 stand for? I have listened to the podcast for years but never heard the meaning of the phrase.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

it's the zip code for Bristol, CT. An homage to Nate and I's weird love of BH 90210

@GasMoneyBob (Chicago Tough)

Yasiel Puig a must add with the Kemp hammy injury?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

We discussed this on pod this morning. I haven't seen anything new yet on Kemp but if he goes on DL, it's not a given that Puig gets the call. He's played mostly RF and LF in minors this year. Joc Pederson plays CF in AA for them is hitting .313 with 15 steals. Tony Gwynn Jr is another possibility. Here's an LA Times article on this: http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgersnow/la-sp-dn-dodgers-matt-kemp-20130529,0,4872766.story

Katie (Chicago)

If I say to "BUY FANTASY LIFE THE BOOK!!!" Do I get my question answered? If yes...Josh Johnson is free agent. I read that scouts at his first outing said he would have gotten hit hard in MLB. No scouting report on 2nd one but decent stats. If I pick him up I?d lose the roster spot I use for streaming and I need streaming to have even a shot at winning K?s and W?s in my H2H 55 league. Is he worth the risk?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:14 PM)

I'm so easy. I do not think he is worth the risk. Below Lincecum Limbo to me. I don't trust him at all, even when he's healthy.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:14 PM)

I'm so easy. I do not think he is worth the risk. Below Lincecum Limbo to me. I don't trust him at all, even when he's healthy.

TK (Milwaukee)

How do you feel about the team name "Wacha Khan"?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:14 PM)

Not bad

Shervon Fakhimi (Fayetteville, AR)

For fantasy football, would it be smarter to use your first 2 picks on rbs and hope to get a Wilson/Kaep/Ryan/RG3 later or use your 1st pick on a RB and take a Rodgers/Brady/Brees/Manning with your 2nd pick?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:16 PM)

In mocks I have done where I have gone RB RB (especially if I am picking in the bottom 5 of the first round) I am happier with my team than I am if I go QB earlier. Manning or Cam should def be there in the third and possibly the 4th if you don't want to wait that long. In general, though, it's deep this year.

MAX (ATL)

Does Norv turner improve trent richardsons value?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:17 PM)

I think he does. Norv - terrible head coach, very good offensive coordinator.

Jeff Doud (Tillamook, OR)

Dr. Roto - I've read your mainfesto each year for a while now... The positions you start your FF draft with have changed over the years. What do you suggest for this year? RB,RB,WR - WR,RB,QB - WR,WR,RB? I'm tempted to go back to RB,RB,WR... what do ya think?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:17 PM)

There's no hard and fast rule but my top 10 is all RB's, if that answers your question.

Nate (Phx)

Okay Mr. Berry, need your help. I'm a fantasy basketball / football junkie with absolutely zero baseball interest. This means summers are a barren fantasy wasteland for me. The obvious answer? Fantasy WNBA! You've got connections; make it happen!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:19 PM)

Pretty sure you can play that on NBA.com or somewhere. Go for it. Draft Griner.

Pat M. (New Jersey)

Do you think Michael Pineda is worth an add soon?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:19 PM)

not in a mix league, no

Chan (Chantilly, VA)

Is Arian Foster on the decline now?HTTR!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:21 PM)

Tons of carries last 3 years, good back-up behind him, already injury concerns.... I'm a little nervous, yeah.

Roddy (Los Angeles)

Thanks for advising to pick up Gausman and start him in all formats when he came up last week. My ERA and WHIP aren't fans of you.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:23 PM)

Um, my recomendation was to pick him up in all formats, not must start. I did say that I would start him if I had him and...uh, yeah, that was a terrible call. But I wasn't as insistent as that about starting him. Whatever. A bad call.

Lucas Paigo (Denver, CO)

TMR- never got a chance o thank you for Doug Martin and Randall Cobb love last year; my brother and I won the football guys players championship for $150K!!!!!! He wanted hankerson in round 13 and I convinced him that Cobb was he guy and the rest is history (Matt Ryan and rg3 as qb's helped). Would like to donate a few bucks to your favorite charity as well for the great nonsense filled podcast w/ the occasional gem of a player !! To baseball, 13 team 5x5 root keeper league-- I'm tied for first, been holding will Myers all year, just got offered Ryan Zimmerman and Seth smith for Myers and Ian Kennedy, no brainer, correct? What ya think of me trying o send a $2 Marte and Loshe for anibal Sanchez? Thanks for the advice and thank the weasel for me.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

Congrats. Glad it worked out. Feel free to donate to the JimmyV fund at jimmyv.org. No brainer on Zimmerman deal - take it. That strikes me as a slightly steep price for Sanchez in a keeper

Bob (Miami)

Give me some of your RBs and WRs that you consider to be "lottery tickets", guys that really arent ranked to high but can possibly have big years

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

Whoever emerges in STL - maybe Zac Stacy... Andre Brown... I'm NOT a Ryan Mathews but the hate may have gone too far on him... Mark Ingram...Jonathan Franklin in GB. Those are some later round guys. I'm high on Lamar Miller, David Wilson, Reggie Bush as guys in the nmiddle rounds ...

Preston (NY)

ROS - Vernon Wells, Mark Teixera, BJ upton?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:31 PM)

Ugh. Wells, Upton, Tex is how I rank them.

stephen (orange county)

Just say the new news for Aaron Hill. Is he droppable now? they said he might need additional surgery

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:33 PM)

Discussed on pod today as well. in non keeper ten team mix... yes

MAX (ATL)

Do you like T.Y Hilton as a second year break out candidate?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:35 PM)

Somewhat, though I think he A) Has alreayd broken out and B)Is getting somewhat overhyped. I'm not convinced that Luck throws as deep this year as he did - new OC is more conservative and I do think DHB will effect some of his looks. Like him, don't LOVE him this year.

Paul (at the library)

Who is more likely to make an impact his year, Yelich or Taveras? Only room on my roster to stash one.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:36 PM)

I say Yelich. He has an obvious path to PT in Miami - I just don't know where Taveras plays this year unless there's a significant injury

Roddy (Los Angeles)

AJ Burnett, I know he's not this good but I really need the K's. Where do you see his ERA and WHIP ROS?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:37 PM)

I actually think he IS this good. Look at his numbers from last year. He's been above the Wandy Line for me for a while now.

Bears (Chicago)

TMR, big fan, I don't always listen to your advice but I love your writing. I have a really good feeling about Geo Bernard this year. I followed him during college and at the combine and pro day. He's about the size and frame of Ray Rice and Doug Martin (who I got in the 5th round last year). Thoughts on him becoming a fantasy stud this year? Or am I a year too early?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:39 PM)

Thanks. Might be a year too early. Certainly worht a flier. Just think they'll continue to give goal line and at least some carries to BJGE.

TJ (Chicago)

While Kinsler is sidelined (feel it'll be a LONG time) who would you rather have at 2B: Profar or Gyorko?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:42 PM)

Profar for the upside. Gyorko has been playing better recently (7th best 2b last 30 on player rater) but if he's avialbel in your league (and Profar is as well) I'd go for the upside play and that's Profar.

Roddy (Los Angeles)

@GasMoneyBob - Quit asking the same questions in multiple chats. AJ already answered you!

Al (New Jersey)

Will there be an audiobook for "Fantasy Life" and, if so, are you the reader?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:43 PM)

yes and yes. Might have Nate, Pod and Stephania make cameos

JB (Brookfield, CT)

Thoughts on Greg Jennings?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

Rodgers to Ponder is a pretty big downgrade and he doesn't have the flexibility of a Harvin to get him the ball different ways. WR3 for me this year.

Angus Archer (Toronto)

Do Fantasy/Sports/Life authors do books tours? Would those books tours include stops north of the 49th parallel?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

Doing a book tour, yes, but probably not in Canada. Sorry.

Ben (Santa Cruz)

I know the On Base has been poor but just dropped B.J upton (finally) for Dominic Brown. The 13 bombs were staring at me. Good move?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:47 PM)

I don't have an issue with it. Not sure Brown is THIS good or Upton is THIS bad but... think it's closer than you'd think. I don't see Upton hitting above the Mendoza line this year - he just looks totally lost - and the speed will be down as well. Brown's power is legit.

Pete (Litchfield, CT)

Criminy! Can we dispense with the NFL draft strategy questions? It's May 30 for crissakes!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:47 PM)

I got about half baseball and half football questions in here, sorry. It's what the people want.

dan (Charleston, SC)

Who do you like ROS Lorezo cain or Parra? I would check the rankings but Parra is not even ranked!!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Cain

Dave (Bryan, TX)

What is Profar's value now that Stephania says Kinsler is out for at least another month? As an example, while Profar is the starter is he a better play than Zobrist?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:49 PM)

Rather have Zobrist

Junior (Work)

Tell Pete to chill, its Football. No off season

Preston (NY)

Pete's right, anyone asking fantasy football questions is a certified lunatic.Lance Lynn: Sell High or Real Deal?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

Real deal

Roger (Fantasy Lane)

Matthew, we just switched our FFL to a Keeper league. First offseason. We select draft order based on reverse order of finish. What is the right order: select keepers before draft order, or draft order before keepers?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:52 PM)

Draft order then keepers. Might influence who you keep/throw back

Mike (Port Hueneme)

Does the amount of carries S.Jackson has logged over the years worry you?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:53 PM)

Not at all. Discussed him in my last article. I am very high on him. http://espn.go.com/fantasy/football/story/_/page/TMR130523/matthew-berry-talented-mr-roto-talks-2013-fantasy-football-top-200-rankings

Petter (Halifax)

You have been ignoring my fair city TMR. But I forgive you. About Tim Hudson. His performance lately is unforgivable. Above the Wandy line? Lincecum Limbo? Or droppable in 10 team mixed leagues. What say you?? (And, p.s., if you discussed this in a pod cast, I wouldn't know because I only download.)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:53 PM)

Below Lincecum Limbo

Guy (Israel)

last time long shot for you to answer :BIG FAT BARTOLO COLON A FINE START VS CWS 2MORROW (AT HOME) Colon would be sad and forced to a weekend of ice cream and pickles if you wont answer

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

yes, I'm starting him

Mike D (Houston, TX)

Ignore the guy giving you crap for the Gausman call. I commend you for your Chris Davis call...I have him in 4 leagues and cannot be happier!PS: I ran into you at the NBA Jam Session in Houston! You are THE MAN!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:54 PM)

Hahaha. Thanks Mike.

Matt (SF)

Can keep 3, who should I keep in 10 team, 2 QB league: Ridley (7th), Graham (10th), Kaep (8th), D. Wilson (12th)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:55 PM)

Kaep and Graham (assuming that's Jimmy). 2 QB league there will be more RB avail.

Mike (Chicago)

TMR: Not a baseball question, so you should be all over this! Was recently at a John Waters show where he said Divine was slated to be a character on Married with Children late in the series run, but passed away just before it happened. Any details you can share? And thanks for the "Grape" Gattis love... picked him up week 1 as a flyer and he's CRUSHING IT!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:56 PM)

I was only on the last season of MWC and he wasn't discussed, but I honestly don't know when he passed away off the top of my head. I will say they had a bunch of odd "guest stars" sometimes...

Josh (Philly)

Which STL rb would you own?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:57 PM)

I have Pead the highest right now but I don't feel great about it. Could easily see Richardson, Stacy or even Ganaway getting the gig full-time.

Josh (Philly)

Is Vick Ballard the clear number one rb for the colts going into the season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:57 PM)

yes

The Other TMR (Seattle)

Kris Medlen - above or below Lincecum Limbo?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

In Lincecum Limbo for now...

Brian (Minneapolis)

Kipnis or Utley ROS?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

Kipnis

matt (orlando)

greinke cain ROS

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

Cain.

Mark (Bellefonte, PA)

Any chance Travis Wood keeps pitching well? I know he had a bad start last week but has been solid otherwise. Also, FYI, he just hit a grand slam a few minutes ago.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:01 PM)

He's solid but he's not THIS good. K rate of just 6 and BB/9 of 3.00... ERA is 2.73, but FIP is 3.76 and that sounds right to me. HIgh three's for an ERA...Think he's a spot starter in a 10 tm mix

Justin (GB, Mass)

If we're going off topic, a bit. What was it like working with George Carlin? He's been one of my role models for quite some time, with his philosophies and all.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:02 PM)

I loved working for him. Just an awesome man. I wrote about it when he passed away four years ago. http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=tmr080624

Matt (Boston)

I've been offered Jason Heyward for Dom Brown - do I take this deal?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:03 PM)

Yes. In a heartbeat

Dan (Seattle-ish)

I know you were pro Maholm; still? Ryu or Maholm for you ROS?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

Probably Ryu. Haven't bailed entirely on Maholm yet - still believe - but Ryu has been ridiculous lately and then pithcing in Dodger stadium... gimme Ryu

Kevin (New York)

My team's in the dumper...changing kharma...(15 team, 5 player keeper league) changing team name from "Joe Carroll's Followers" to "Machado about Nothing".

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:05 PM)

not bad

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:06 PM)

ok gang, gotta run. Thanks for stopping by! I'll try to answer more questions on Twitter (twitter.com/MatthewBerryTMR) or Facebook (Facebook.com/MatthewJBerry). Have a great weekend!
