Chat with Ohm Youngmisuk

Ohm
  (2:00 PM)

Yo, wud up?

Alex (Anaheim)

Ohm, I'm bummed about my other favorite sports teams right now. What's one good reason to be excited about the Giants' chances in 2013?

Ohm
  (2:01 PM)

If they stay healthy, especially Nicks, and pass rush can get it going again, Giants can contend and win NFC East with Eli. So there you go.

jim va.beach [via mobile]

Hey ohm. I no you only get to see a little practice but, any late rounders impress you so far? Thanks

Ohm
  (2:01 PM)

Hey Jim. Really hard to tell because there's no tackling as well. So hard to gauge but I'm intrigued by Cooper Taylor's size.

LL (MI)

Hey Ohmie, did I hear you say in a previous chat that Michigan won't have a top five in this year NBA draft??? Hey buddy, stop spiking your drink and further, where's a E.L. player in the draft this year???Losers!!Can't stand them!!!Top 5 buddy!!!See ya!!!

Ohm
  (2:03 PM)

I don't remember saying that but now that you are asking me, I'd be a bit surprised if Burke goes in the top five. What does it matter anyways? All that matters is who is top 3 next year in the country. Is Michigan going to be a top-3 team next year? I think there's only one school in the state that will be able to say that and it's not the one in Ann Arbor.

Lee (NY,NY)

Do you see D.Wilson being the lead back and taking the lead role or do you see more of a even slit with Andre Brown?

Ohm
  (2:03 PM)

They'll compete but no matter who wins, I still think they will share carries with Brown getting goal-line duties.

Mike D (Eutawville,SC)

Biggest position battles going into training camp?

Ohm
  (2:04 PM)

LBs, RT, RBs, third safety, fourth DE, backup DTs, fourth WR.

Mike D (Eutawville,SC)

Will the Giants be in play for any cornerbacks?

Ohm
  (2:05 PM)

Maybe one more veteran to sign for depth but I think they are going with Webster, Amukamara, Ross, Hosley and hopefully Thomas factors in later.

Ryan (NYC)

I look at the issues the other NFC East teams have, which to me are more serious than any of the Giants' issues (Eagles QB, new unproven coach; Redskins RGIII, and Dallas never performing in big games) and that the Giants, at least on paper have an easier schedule than in year's past. So any reason why the Giants shouldn't make the playoffs this year as a wild card or division winner?

Ohm
  (2:06 PM)

Giants should contend to win the division and for playoffs but you can never discount health and no matter what their schedule looks like now, you have always have to brace for second half swoon. Their schedule is a little harder than people give credit for.

Darrell (MD)

Seems pretty quiet on the Cruz front. What's the latest you are hearing?

Ohm
  (2:06 PM)

Nothing new so far. If I knew anything I'd let you guys know or you would hear.

Chris (Connecticut)

Ohm, great work. I was wondering what do you think is a fair deal to give Victor Cruz AND Hakeem Nicks moving forward? Do you think the Cruz negotiations are now more about the amount of guaranteed money?

Ohm
  (2:11 PM)

Not really for me to say. My thing is the Giants need to keep both of them without breaking the bank. Surely the Giants have a number in mind for both. My pure guess is the Giants probably want to pay Cruz in the range of $7-$8 mil or a little more per year and Nicks maybe in $9-$10 range. Just my feeling.

Andy (Washington DC)

Ohm - What is up?! once again thanks for taking the time to chat with us. REALLY enjoy it! In your estimation, how will the Giants align their RB? ie will Wilson be starting or will Brown be the main guy? Also, which rookie will stand out this year based on the very little time you've seen them? Thanks again.

Ohm
  (2:12 PM)

No sweat Andy. Thanks for stopping by. I think they could go with Wilson to start and then bring in Brown and switch back and forth on drives or go with the hot hand. Then in red zone, go with Brown at goal line. On third downs, could be either but I am leaning Brown unless another back on depth chart wins that third back job.

Ryan (NYC)

Why can't David Wilson return punts (which is more important to me than kickoff returns) and still have a big part in the run game? If guys like Reggie Bush and DeSean Jackson could play their main positions and do it why are the Giants looking to take their best returned off of returns?

Ohm
  (2:13 PM)

David Wilson is smaller than those guys. And if he gets hurt on a punt return, Giants fans will riot. Not worth the risk.

Ohm
  (2:14 PM)

Wilson definitely smaller than Reggie. DeSean it's arguable. But DeSean is a wide receiver and doesn't touch the ball as much as Wilson will have to.

Justin (Colorado)

Last year nobody thought the G-Men would let Kenny Phillips slip through free agency. Due to his injuries, we saw how that turned out. What do you think the chances are that the Giants will only give Nicks a low offer if he ends up injured once again. Nicks obviously has enormous potential, but he always seems hurt. I could see them letting him go, especially if Murphy or others really step up this year and would be available on for a lower amount than Nicks next year.

Ohm
  (2:16 PM)

Who said nobody thought that? I thought there was definitely more than a chance that last year was his last year with the Giants. I think they will give him an offer they are comfortable with. It may be lower than some of these other receivers are making but they want to keep him. Let's pump the brakes on Murphy right now. Let's see what he does in camp before you start talking about him possibly being a replacement. Long ways to go.

Scott (Rome, NY)

What are your thoughts on the D-tackles? What do you think the rotation will be?

Ohm
  (2:18 PM)

Linval and Cullen start. Patterson and either Rogers/Austin/Kuhn rotate in. I think the Giants may end up cutting one or two DTs by end of camp. Could be Rogers if Patterson pans out. I'm not sure if they are going to give up on a second-round pick like Austin this soon. I'd be a little surprised. We'll have to see how Kuhn recovers from knee injury.

Ryan (NYC)

How do you feel about cold weather Super Bowl? Majority of analyst hate it but I disagree. The most classic games both regular season and playoffs are in awful weather. I understand about re-scheduling if another Sandy happens but you can't think like that every geographic location is at risk for some type of natural disaster that could postpone any game.

Ohm
  (2:20 PM)

i don't mind it. I like something different for a change. But you do hate to think about weather affecting and potentially spoiling the biggest game of the year. Like if a team that played well all season long all of the sudden loses the Super Bowl in a blizzard, you are going to hear a lot of excuses from that fan base for sure.

Dave (Silver Spring)

so what the heck is Nicks' deal? anyone know yet?

Ohm
  (2:21 PM)

Dave, you from Silver Spring, Md? That's my hometown. What do you mean what's his deal? He is entering the final year of his deal. Are you asking me what happened last week at OTAs? No word so far other than it was personal.

Andy (Washington DC)

Is the Oline better, equal or not as hot as last year? Also is the David Deihl shelf life dwindling?>

Ohm
  (2:22 PM)

I think it remains to be seen. Locklear was good for the Giants before he got hurt. And there were a lot of injuries to Baas and Snee. So if they are healthy, they can be better and deeper with addition of Pugh and Herman for depth and Brewer should get better with another year and more reps in practice. I'm not counting Diehl out at RT.

Steve (NYC)

Is this make or break for Da'rel Scott? Does he factor into any time running the ball

Ohm
  (2:23 PM)

Could be for this team at least. And as far as getting carries, I don't see more than one or two if that because of Wilson and Brown. Now if Scott shines in camp and stays healthy, perhaps he can play his way into seeing more than that. But he'd have to have an impressive camp.

Andy (Washington DC)

Sorry Ohm - one final one from me. Which rookie are you most impressed with thus far?

Ohm
  (2:23 PM)

Hard to say Andy. We don't see much in practice and it's non contact. Sorry. Need more time on that. But I'm intrigued by Cooper Taylor.

Mike (Melville NY)

Giants secondary was bad last year, and I didn't see them do much to improve the secondary this year. Is there any reason to believe the secondary will be better this year?

Ohm
  (2:24 PM)

They're banking on Webster bouncing back, Prince improving, Hosley improving and Ross providing depth.

Ohm
  (2:25 PM)

And pass rush getting better as well.

Ryan (NYC)

We still have plenty of good football left from the two-time Super Bowl MVP and future HOF Eli, but how serious are the Giants in planning to "Aaron Rodgers" Nassib so hopefully there is no rebuilding phase once Eli retires?

Ohm
  (2:25 PM)

Why else would they have drafted him? They did so in case of emergency if Eli gets hurt and if everything pans out, maybe he will be the successor. But that is a very long ways away.

Dave (Silver Spring)

yes Sir, Silver Spring Md - Dennis Ave. yeah I was talking about if anyone knew why he skipped OTAs. thanks!

Ohm
  (2:26 PM)

I grew up a few blocks away from Dennis Avenue. Nice!

Martin (New York, NY)

Do you think Cruz is replaceable in the slot (like Steve Smith was), or is he absolutely critical for Eli's success?

Ohm
  (2:27 PM)

The Giants will probably argue that they can plug in another guy and groom somebody. Might not have the same results but they were successful with Smith and Cruz with Eli. But I think Cruz is not your average receiver in the slot. So if they lose him, it would be hard to replace him. Somebody else can rack up a bunch of catches, perhaps a Jernigan in the slot, but playmaking-wise, hard to replace a game-breaker like Cruz can be.

Andy (Washington DC)

I lied - more questions. Were you surprised by the Urlacher retirement?

Ohm
  (2:27 PM)

I don't really know much about it but once I saw Bears cut him, I thought it was a definite possibility.

Andy (Washington DC)

If you had to guess, Herlizch or Conner starting at MLB in september?

Ohm
  (2:29 PM)

My guess as of right now, Connor. But Mark has all of camp to prove himself and win the job.

Ryan (NYC)

In a standard fantasy league who is your #1 round 1 pick? Mine would be Peyton this year.

Ohm
  (2:30 PM)

No way. Love Peyton but not first overall. I never shy away from taking a QB in the first round, I'm one of those who believe a QB can carry your fantasy team. But at No. 1 overall, got to go AP.

Martin (New York, NY)

How has Justin Pugh performed so far?

Ohm
  (2:31 PM)

Hard to say so far Martin... but the coaches say he's held his own.

Martin (New York, NY)

Favorite Giants TD celebration: Cruz, Hynoski, or another one?

Ohm
  (2:32 PM)

Hynoski's was hilarious but I'll go with Cruz. It gets people hyped. LOL.

Andy (Washington DC)

What is the best part about your job? From here (former sportswriter in Boston) I have to imagine it truly is living the dream.

Ohm
  (2:34 PM)

Oh yeah, cool Andy. Well, I did dream of covering the NBA in high school and college and was fortunate enough to do it for 10 years. It can be a pain though from time to time. You always take your work with you home and out. Being a beat writer, you have to be on call at all times. If something happens, like a car accident or a player gets arrested, you have to be ready no matter what the hour to write and make phone calls. If a trade breaks, etc. So in some ways, you are on call like a doctor or lawyer without their salaries. LOL. But the only other thing I'd probably be doing is perhaps be a DJ. And the job has allowed me to witness incredible events and games and meet some incredible people as well. Can't complain at all.

Martin (New York, NY)

Do you think Cruz (#14 WR) and Nicks (#21 WR) are undervalued going into this season for fantasy?

Ohm
  (2:36 PM)

Yes, I think you can get good value for them. I think getting one of them in the third round would be a steal in a PPR. Nicks in fourth round would be excellent value. But really early now, got to see how injuries shake out in camps and see who is doing well and who isn't. But I expect bounce back season for the Giants offense.

Ryan (NYC)

What is latest on Hynoski injury?

Ohm
  (2:36 PM)

He had surgery on Friday. He hopes to return for the season opener.

Steven (manahawkin, nj)

Who do u think will be the number one corner going into the season? i really think prince is going to have a breakout year.

Ohm
  (2:37 PM)

Webster. Still think they will view him as their No. 1 corner unless he struggles. And if Prince is playing well, perhaps they will put Prince on the best WR. But for now I think they still view Webster as that guy.

Nick (Long Island )

Giants should let TT fully heal and wait till at least 4 games in the season to get him on the field. Agreed? And chad jones what happened to him?

Ohm
  (2:38 PM)

Nick, I think they should even think about waiting longer if he needs that time. Like maybe start him on PUP. Why not? As for Chad, he recently turned his attention toward baseball and is making a comeback in baseball now. No more football.

Alex (NOLA)

Hey Ohm! Do you think Randle will have a breakout year this season? He reminds me a lot of Nicks but with some baggage to work out.

Ohm
  (2:38 PM)

He should be in line to get more reps as the third WR. So in that case, he will have the opportunity to break out. We'll see if he grabs it and runs with it.

andiamo (NYC)

You know I'm a Webster stan....but it's Prince's time to shine.Move Prince over to the opposing #1 WR. Also, what are the chances that Will Hill plays the slot over Hosley?

Ohm
  (2:41 PM)

Wud up man? I think they will wait to see how it goes with Webster first and how Prince is improving. As for the slot, I think there's a chance... I think the Giants have options in slot with Hosley, perhaps Ross and even a third safety like Hill or Taylor and there's always Rolle as well if they don't trust anyone.

Nick (Long Island )

Does being a beat writer get you chicks?

Ohm
  (2:41 PM)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Steve (Manahawkin, NJ)

I know we have Myers as out TE for now, but what have you seen or heard about Adrien Robinson the guy we drafted last year?

Ohm
  (2:42 PM)

Haven't seen a ton yet but still very early. But I think he's still developing and Giants will go with more Myers and Pascoe. But injury to Hynoski could force Bear to play more FB so if Robinson has a good camp, he could get some snaps.

Steve (NYC)

Assume that Nicks stays pretty healthy and Cruz signs and plays...which of the WRs do you expect to make the most contribution?

Ohm
  (2:44 PM)

That's really hard to say. I think they will both put up numbers. Cruz could end up with more TDs and catches but Nicks with more yards and close in TDs. Hard to say. But I think Cruz gets more catches.

Ohm
  (2:44 PM)

Alright guys, thanks for the questions this week! See you all next week!
