Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (1:57 PM)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Yankees live chat. we'll get started in a moment

pj (midlo)

quite an accomplishment for yanks to be in the race in East at this time. will starting pitching hold up because this team cannot relu upon scoring 5-6 a night

Wallace Matthews
  (2:02 PM)

I agree that the Yankees have done well to be in the thick of the race to this point and that is mostly due to the starting pitching. But if you saw last night's game, I would think you share my concerns anbout CC going forward. another concern has to be Robertson/Mariano, who due to the offense's lack of firepower are likely to have to protect more one- and two-run leads than they did last year

Corey (louisville) [via mobile]

Wall-E, thanks for the coverage. What's your take on how well the yanks are playing right now? To me Kuroda is pitching more like an ace than CC should I be worried about him? Yanks win tonight right? Lol

Wallace Matthews
  (2:03 PM)

In my opinion Kuroda has been the Yankees best and most reliable starter all season. CC continues to be a puzzle. As I wrote today, just when you thought he had mastered the art of pitching with less velocity, he gives a game like last night's. and I think the Yankees should expect to see more of this -- a good start or two followed by a bad start or two -- for the rest of the season from him

Did the Yanks blow it by not taking Denney in the 2nd round?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:04 PM)

That's more a question for keith Law than for me. Sorry

Alex (Anaheim)

Do you expect a third straight strong start from Phelps this weekend?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:05 PM)

Alex, having seen how erratic young pitchers can be, I don;t expect anything. However, I do believe pitchers, and all players, are capable of being as good as they look on their best day, so it would not surprise me if Phelps pitches well this weekend. However, as bad as the Angels have played this season they still have a pretty fearsome lineup

Fred (Tampa)

Wally granted the season is only 1/3 over, but in 2014 can you see A-Rod, Jeter, Adams, and Nunie sharing playing time in the field and at DH? A-Rod & Jeter may only start 80-100 games in the field. Adams could get some occasional AB at 2B

Wallace Matthews
  (2:10 PM)

Hey, Fred. I'm going to try to deal with as many of your questions as I can in one shot. it's really impossible to answer the question of how much playing time Jeter and A-Rod will get next year when we don;t even know how much, if at all, they will play this year. But I tend to agree that asking either of them to play the field more than 100 games next year is pretty doubtful. Adams shows promise but has his own injury histroy (ankle) that leads some in the org to think he will not be able to stand up to everyday play. Nunez' seems to take forever to recover from what appear to be slight injuries. So the answer may lie elsewhere. As for Overbay in RF, I think his inexperience showed badly last night -- that was his ball all the way, but he got a very bad read on it -- but on most balls he has looked pretty competent, and I have liked what i've seen of his arm. As for him being trade bait, it's possible but I think the Yankees like him as insurance behind Tex at first base. If anyone should be tradebait, it is Youkilis, but at $12M there won;t be too many takers unless the Yankees swallow a chunk of it.

Manny Nunez Ny,Ny [via mobile]

Should the yankees trade for another top starter after the all star brake ?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:11 PM)

I don;t think so. CC's problems nothwithstanding, starting pitching has been their strength all season and the still have Nova in AAA and Pineda presumably working his way back, so I think they're well-covered in that area

Brandon (LA)

What are the chances of the Yankees trading R.Cano by the trade deadline and somehow signing him in the off-season?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:12 PM)

Hi, Brandon. I doubt that very highly because trading Cano would be raising the white flag on this seaosn, which they will not do. They would also run the risk of alienating the player and making it that much tougher to re-sign him next year

Andrew (Nesconset)

What do you think the Yankees do with Pineda when his rehab assignment is finished?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:14 PM)

My gut tells me he will be in the rotation, if only because of the fanfare with which he was brought here and the price the Yankees paid to get him. However, Cashman has said he will have to demonstrate during his rehab assigment that he is better than the five starters the Yankees already have, plus Ivan Nova. If he's true to his word, Pineda's road to Yankee Stadium could be rougher than we think

Alfred (New York)

What do you think the Yanks should do with Wells he's in a very big slump and he's not as fast as I thought?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:15 PM)

Since they have him for two seasons, I think they have to give him some more time. Who's to say that the Wells we're seeing now is the real one and the one we saw in April the mirage? It could be the other way around, and if so, then he's still a very productive player

Abraham roldan (bloomfield nj)

What role does phil huges has when pineda is ready?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:17 PM)

It all depends on how he's pitching. I believe Cashman when he says he will take the players he thinks have the best chance of winning for him, and if Hughes is pitching well when Pineda is ready, then Phelps could be the odd man out. Or someone could get hurt. As we have seen, a lot can change between now and three weeks from now

What are the chances of the Yanks making a deep playoff run with the pitching they have and CC not being CC?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:18 PM)

i think the pitching has been OK and sometimes better than OK, but a subpar CC is a serious impediment to a long playoff run, esp because it means you are depending on andy Pettitte, who will turn 41 on Saturday, to be strong in October after having put in close to a full season. So a CC turnaround is important and probably crucial

Ed (Queens Village)

Who does Mike Pineda replace in rotation once called up from minor leagues?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:19 PM)

That is the question of the day and impossible to answer at this time, but the easy answer seems to be either Phelps or Hughes, depending on which of them is pitching better when Pineda is ready

MARK NYC [via mobile]

Do they yanks have to make some major moves in the offseason cough cough A ROD other than sign cano

Wallace Matthews
  (2:20 PM)

Cano is obv THE big move this off-season. As far as moving A-Rod, i think they'd have a better chance of moving a grand piano to the upper deck. By hand

Martin (New York, NY)

If the Yankees decided to dangle an arm in order to get another bat for the lineup, who would have the most value? Hughes?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:21 PM)

For the Yankees purposes, it would be Hughes because he's a free-agent next year, or possibly Joba (same reason), but for other clubs, the better vale might be Phelps or Nova, relatively inexpensive guys that can control for a couple more seasons

Gavin Ewbank (Palm Coast, Florida)

What are your expectations for Hughes tonight?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:22 PM)

I expect he'll show up. Beyond that, who knows? For a park in which the ball supposedly doesn;t carry, according to Hafner last night, Coco Crisp and Derek Norris had no problem finding the seats, and as we know, Hughes has a tendency to lead hitters there. So we'll see

J (newark)

any chance the Yankees and Cano (& Jay-Z) re-open contract negotiations before free agency?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:23 PM)

My understanding is that they have been keeping the lines of communication open and probably will throughout the season, but seriously, if you had a client like Cano, would you sign anything without testing the market?

Roger (Kinderhook, NY)

Musty up, Adams down? Mustelier has been raking at Scranton for the last several weeks. Do you think we'll see him in the Bronx anytime soon?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:24 PM)

I would love that because I think he's a great story and a fun player to watch. However, I think the Yankees are not sold on him defensively and would like him to get more time at 3b in AAA. I don;t think we'll see him until September

Tony ([via mobile])

In my opinion, CC got shelled last night? Am i right> Also amI the only one here who thinks that Cano shouldn't be in the home run derby?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:26 PM)

You are right about CC. As for HRD, who really cares? It's basically batting practice dressed up as a prime-time TV special

Tony ([via mobile])

Also, I know this is old news, but why did the yanks let go of Chien-Ming Wang?

Wallace Matthews
  (2:27 PM)

Did you see how he pitched last night for Toronto? There's your answer

Anthony (tampa)

good afternoon wally what do u see the yankees doing at the trade deadline.

Wallace Matthews
  (2:29 PM)

Hey, anthony. They;ll do what they always do, pick and choose among the best available players trheyt think canhelp this team. Right now, that could be a backup OF or SS. I think they're set with pitching

Wallace Matthews
  (2:30 PM)

Thank you all for the great questions. We'll do it again next week. enjoy the game tonight
