It's the fastest hour in golf! Tiger not playing so good, Anchor ban's a go, and Texas A&M gets a slow play penalty that ends up costing them a chance for a title. Lot to get to... BRING IT!!
Loved the "rhino?" logo on shirt in video. Also striped Referee shirt was funny. On purpose?
Ref shirt was on purpose, Rhino was a shirt I bought at the Ecko Outlet in PA... cost me $7!! I'm a big bargain shopper.
Nick Watney struggled again this week. He has been since he shanked his tee shot on 17 at Quail Hollow when leading the tournament on Saturday. Can a single shot like that have a lasting impact on tour players? What would you do as a caddy to help him out?
One shot like that won't bother a tour pro... Webb Simpson hits a shank once a week, and every guy I've caddied for has hit at least one. Watney is struggling for the same reason Rory is, just can't put four (two) good rounds together.
Will Rory have more wins or more missed cuts when his career is over?
Missed cuts. Rory's game isn't like Tiger's so I don't see him grinding out cuts when things are going bad.
Good afternoon, MC! Prediction for today's (or tomorrow's) cut line?
+3 should be safe.
MC, last week you mentioned a video where you called the USGA hypocrites. Is it the one with you looking stylish in a referee's shirt?
To be honest the exact one I was speaking of was deleted, it was a bit too harsh, so I combined three videos into one. I like the results of the ref shirt one better anyway. And this way I'll still have credentials for the US Open and Open Championships! ;)
Any chance for Tiger coming back?
10 shots back, and two days to make it up... I just don't see any hint in Tiger's game that shows me he can do that this weekend.
What is going on with Rory McIilRoy? Do you think he can right the ship and win a major this year?
I'm an optimist but I'm really having a tough time watching the mistakes Rory is making off the tee with some of his drives. And his scrambling ain't great either this year. Right now I'd say he won't be a factor in any majors this year.
Spencer Levin - any update? He gone until next season?
I saw him at the Izod party at Augusta this year and he said he didn't know when he'd be back. He was bored out of his mind too. Glad you reminded me, I'll call him and see how he's doing.
any red flags in Tigers game ahead of Merion? Or are we as fans expecting too much too often?
The guy has won 4 times in 7 starts, we are expecting what we are seeing him do... again! No red flags if he plays Merion like TPC Sawgrass.
Wassup MC? So Maurice Allen just shot 100-115 on the Latin America PGA tour. And no I'm not kidding, go look. Now, he is a Long Drive guy, but that's more than absurd. And if you were the pro(s) playin with him, you got hosed to say the least. What is the highest score you saw on tour while caddying? And where do sponsors need to draw the line regarding exemptions in terms of 'ability'?
If I'm a tournament director, I'm trying to sell tix. Remember when Jerry Rice played as a pro in a Web.com Tour event? As the pro that gets paired with someone like that you just play like it's a pro am and stick to your own game. That's when you need a good caddie that can keep your mind occupied.
Tiger is probably one of the best iron players ever and hits it incredible off the tee with the 3 and 5 woods. What is it about the driver that causes probably the greatest player ever to struggle so much to the point he leaves it in the bag.
The driver has the smallest margin for error, therefore it's the club that players have the least amount of confidence in (putter being number 2). That being said you can't swing scared or try and "steer" it. Tiger tries to steer it every now and then, but he (and most other golfers) have too big ego's to leave driver in the bag.
How about Boo? Can he compete at a major?
Yes, but it all comes down to the putter, only at a major it's making those 6 footers for pars. If he can do that... he can compete.
Rory looks lost - and admits he is lost currently. Does he figure it out by US Open time? Gotta say no right?
Who are the best major-less players right now? Which ones most likely to change that?
I'd say Lee Westwood is the man on top of that list, but the longer he goes the harder it will get.
Your thoughts on the Texas A&M penalty? Was it the right call?
As harsh as it seems, the group was 6 minutes behind on their time. It was the right call.
I think the interesting thing about the Texas A&M penalty was the use of checkpoints as part of the process. Is that something that would be implementable (and fairly) at a PGA tour event? It might be a good way to catch repeat offenders
Irony is that the PGA Tour DOES have a system like that in place... they just don't hand out penalty strokes.
With Sergios talent and history of close but no cigar moments, does he ever learn from his mistakes and salvage a major?
Never, because in his heart he doesn't believe he can win one.
Is David Hearn signed up/eligible to play in the US Open?
I don't believe he's in right now so he'll have to play the sectional qualifier, as far as I know.
I have a hunch Kuchar will have something to say about the US Open this year. He's not much of an outsider I guess...you got a dark horses for us to watch for? Maybe Stricker?
This might be Stricker's best chance at a major just because of the length of the course.
Hey MC are you in town for the Memorial?
Not this year. And I am REALLY missing my Thurman Burger!
Tiger hit 13/14 fairways. He was due for a clunker, he'll be ok
Enjoyed your ref shirt video! You write the text ahead of time for your videos? Speak from a list of points?
Mostly off the cuff. Have a few points I memorize and then shoot til I like what I got.
DD posted a photo of his swing improvement on twitter (working with Kuchar's coach in TX.) I say he qualifies for the US Open on Monday and finishes top 30 in Memphis. You with me?
Man, as much as I love DD and want him to win again, a major? That's asking a bit much. How bout he win a regular tour event first?
In my opinion, Tigers 2013 wins all have been grinds. He doesnt have an eye-popping, birdie-fest 62 or 63. Can he continue to win that way?
Absolutely. Doesn't matter how you win, but 66's and 65's are more realistic than 63's.
Heck MC, how about DD get a top 10 first!?
Agreed! And I'm rooting for him.
If you want to win a US Open you'd better hit a ton of greens in reg, surprisingly that isn't a strength of Kuchar or Stricker. I would honestly think Stricker's best bet for a major at this point is the British Open, but last I heard he was planning to skip it this year.
Wouldn't surprise me. He is being smart, not playing tournaments he doesn't like just because it seems like the right thing to do. Makes him better.
Do you know the identity of the Golf Channel guy on Twitter who tracks Tiger? Not asking you to reveal, just asking if you know.
Honestly don't know. I think it's a couple guys that take turns but I couldn't say for sure. Someone thought it was me, I just laughed. I'd admit it if it was me. It's not me.
Hey Michael any update on why Noh got DQ from Memorial
Checking on it. My guy at the tour said he just walked off without saying anything to anyone and was a WD for a while. He's checking on an official word. If I know before we're done... you'll know... or Noh! haha
MC, in an event that places a premium on ballstriking (tee to green), i.e. a US Open, etc.. what should be considered more of a premium - driving accuracy or GIR stats? I say D.A. because without it the GIR will suffer (unlike little/no rough tournaments that don't impact the GIR even with missed fairways).
GIR is much more important. Means you have the most birdie chances. Hit greens, hitting fairways matters but hitting greens matters more.
Hoping Rory focuses a bit more on golf instead of traveling the world to see the gf. Be great to see both of them improve in their sports.
Young love... at some point they'll get back to work.
Sricker is a non-factor in every major (other that his 2 in 1998's PGA) what makes you think he'll have a sniff at the US? And under the where-are-they-now category, what is Rich Beem up to? Love the chats Mike.
Thanks man. This US Open is a great chance for Stricker because it's a course he can manage as far as length goes. Means he can hit more fairways and more greens and doesn't have smash driver everywhere.
Guan Tianlang, 72-79 this week. What's next for him? Seems to be playing more than expected.
Do you think Guan is done playing TOUR events in 2013?
I was actually glad he shot 79. He needs to get back to being a 14 year old kid for a little while and it seems the only way that's gonna happen is if he has some failures on tour. It was great to see him play well but now he needs to go get stronger and beat some more amateurs.
But aren't GIR stats artificially inflated because of the number of tournaments with wide fairways and/or little to no rough (not penal). In a US Open, if you hit in the rough off the tee, you can nearly forget about GIR. That's why, in a US Open, I would weigh that stat greater. You don't agree?!
With how narrow the fairways are at a US Open everyone is going to miss a reasonable amount. It's more about who can hit GIR anyways
What are your thoughts on Tiger not returning Sergio's call?
Doesn't have to cause they'll meet face to face at the US Open.
I know Phil likes to the play the week prior to a major and took this week off, but do you think last years "Cell Phone Gate" had anything to do with him skipping this week?
Very little. He rarely played the event as it was, Cell Gate just gave him a convenient out.
I prefer the score in relation to par stat instead of FIR and GIR personally. But GIR is more important - GIRs take the oblong numbers (double bogey+) out of play
Tiger noted the wind as a factor today, but certain guys went low. What type of game is needed to play well in the wind? How difficult is that to adjust to?
You have to be striking solid and have the ability to flight it. Those guys do the best in wind.
I saw Merion last week, it looks terrific. That said, it's not going to be easy getting around over there. Thoughts?
Getting players and spectators around is going to be a nightmare. That being said, it was important for the USGA to come back to a historic spot like Merion at least one more time with the players and equipment of today. I just want mother nature to cooperate so the course can get firm and fast.
If you could only have one of the following which would be better for a 14-year old amateur in the long run? A couple of T50th finishes and missed cuts in tour events or a couple of 5-shot wins in USJGA events?
ALWAYS take the wins at 14 years old. You'll have a better chance to get wins later on the big tour.
What can we expect from DJ this year? Seems to be struggling with injuries and just can't get back to form.
He needs to stay healthy for at least two full months if he wants to get back to contending, that means the PGA will be his best shot at a major but also means he has to stay healthy.
Is Kuchar as nice in person as he comes across on TV?- frankly he seems like a saint. Never hear a harsh word about him...and I think the most angry thing he's ever muttered on TV was 'darn it'.
Kuchar is a really nice guy, BUT believe me when I tell you, he's got a killer instinct and when he gets it going bad he's just like us... ok not like us.
Where does the memorial rank behind the majors?
I'd rank it up there with Wells Fargo and Players Championship
Whats Anthony Kim been up to? When will we be seeing him again and what should we expect?
Talked to his trainer two weeks ago and he told me AK's doctor told him he had 3 months before he could hit golf shots. Said it was actually a good thing for AK to miss the game so bad.
If you had to pick NOW between Mahan, Stricker, Z. Johnson, BVP at the US Open, who would you choose?
Thanks for another fast chat! Hope Vijay doesn't say anything about not being mentioned today. Have fun in the pool!
Done at the pool party already, this chat gave me a great excuse to leave early. Now to finish the Father's Day Gift Guide! Thanks everyone!!MONDAY 3 PM EST let's do it again!!!@ESPNCaddie on TwitterESPNCaddie@gmail.com is my email.Have a great weekend everybody.MC
