Chat with Garry Paskwietz

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:59 PM)

Hello everyone, let's get started.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NFL Stadiums will the USC Trojans play at this Season?

Garry Paskwietz
  (4:59 PM)

none, unless it happens in a bowl game

JT (Spokane)

Next Commit, and give a glimpse of your crstal ball whn February comes around?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:00 PM)

I could see one of the Northern California players like a D.J. Calhoun. I think he makes a lot of sense as a linebacker and it sounds like he is down to USC and UCLA.

SCOTT (NJ)

WHAT ROLE DO YOU FOR DELVON SIMMONS IN THE FUTURE. ALSO I HATE TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE BUT ANY NEWS WITH MATTHEW THOMAS GIVEN THE VANDERDOES SITUATION

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:03 PM)

I think Delvon fits in perfectly to the USC rotation at defensive end behind Leonard Williams and George Uko. It could end up being a real nice group. In addition to Simmons, who started 13 games last year as a sophomore at Texas Tech, the Trojans could have reserves in the middle such as J.R. Tavai, Greg Townsend, Kenny Bigelow and Cody Temple. That's not bad. It's also not out of the realm of possibility for Delvon to push Uko but I doubt if anybody is moving Williams out of his spot. As far as Thomas, no word from that camp at all.

scbtnd (Fountain Valley, Ca.)

Does the addition of 5 star DT Simmons help off set the DT misses the last two signing periods (EV, Ellis McCarthy and little Armstead)? 2014 USC 6 man DT rotation could be Uko, Woods, Bigelow, Williams, Townsend and Simmons. That's solid.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:05 PM)

Yes, it does somewhat. Simmons is a legit option and a guy that Orgeron had focused on coming out of high school. Plus, he's already shown he can start and produce in major college football. With all due respect to those others, who all offer great potential, none of them have shown they can do that yet. I think this was a real solid pick-up for the Trojans in an area where you always welcome the help.

MJ (Davis, CA)

How do you see Ty Isaacs utilized? Any chance he plays this year? Also, I know he's enrolled and participating in the throwing sessions, however, I read a rumor Ty is not happy! Any truth to this?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:08 PM)

Ty would seem to be a natural fit as a big back in this offense, especially with Kiffin's stated desire to run the ball more and control the line of scrimmage. I'm just not sure about him earning playing time this year. If everyone is healthy, there are a lot of options ahead of him on the depth chart right now with Redd, Davis, Madden, Morgan and Allen. I'm not saying Isaac isn't good enough to earn time but he's going to have to prove himself quickly in camp with limited touches. I think that rumor about Ty is being spread in part by a Twiiter post he made about wanting to sleep in his own bed. So far he seems to be getting along fine with the other players and there hasn't been any real signs of him not being happy.

Taylor (Mo. Val)

Who do you think the Trojans will sign at TE in this class? i really believe Luatua is a Bama vs ND battle, & i haven't heard much about Brice Dixon as of late. Are there other options out there??

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:11 PM)

I'm not ruling out Luatua yet for SC, I think the Trojans are still a real solid option here. I also think Tyler would fit in just fine in the Trojans system. The thing to remember about Tyler is that he's a fantastic blocker from that spot. Dixon is more of an athletic pass catching tight end than Luatua is and Bryce is definitely a good one. The Trojans have offers out to 6 uncommitted tight ends right now so I think that shows how serious they are at that position. Two of the top names are Dalton Schultz from Utah and Mark Andrews from Arizona.

Kris (L.B)

When will SC be holding there summer camps??

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:12 PM)

The line camp and skills player camp are both being held this weekend while the Rising Stars Camp, which is the one with the top talent, will be held on June 25 and 26.

MJ (Davis, CA)

Hi Gary, do you think that keeping A Walker at LT has anything to do with coach's plan to run more this year and Walker happens to be a better run blocker than his alternates? Walker may have lots of physical potential, but that is just part of the equation. IMO, the mental part which Walker seems to struggle with is just as important as the physical traits required for that position.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:15 PM)

I'm sure that thinking is part of it. Lane Kiffin has seen potential in Walker ever since spring 2012 when he named him the starter at LT. Even with the struggles Aundrey has had so far, I get the sense that Kiffin still sees that potential and he thinks Aundrey offers the best option for the team. We'll see what happens because that's a pretty important spot and Kiffin has made it clear that he doesn't think Aundrey is where he needs to be yet.

Brice (Lancaster)

I really hope the trojans don't give up on Viane, i really think he will be a beast in college, but with that being said do you think we offer Kammy Delp now?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:17 PM)

I agree with you about Viane's potential. Terrific strength to go along with better than expected footwork. It would surprise me if the Trojans give up on him, that's not the way this staff usually works, especially when it's a player who grew up an SC fan. I don't think Viane's commitment to Alabama necessarily means the Trojans turn around and offer Delp but Kammy is definitely a guy who was on their radar screen already and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see an offer at some point.

MJ (Davis, CA)

Why do you think SC coaches delayed offering LB D. Williams while others from future Serra classes in 2014 & 2015 have been offered already?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:20 PM)

That's a mysterious one. Dwight has an impressive list of offers from top schools and it was known he wanted one from SC but it never came. There is a train of thought that he is a "tweener", a solid player but without a clear position in college. With his size, he could grow into a linebacker or possibly be a safety. I also agree that it has to be very noticeable for him to see three Serra underclassmen offered before him. It's also important to note that schools like Alabama and Oregon have yet to offer Dwight as well so it's not like USC is the only school to not pull the trigger yet.

grant (canada)

what do you think of the delvon simmons commit?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:20 PM)

Terrific pick-up for the Trojans.

Sam (Glendale)

Hi Garry, Delvon Simmons vs Eddie Vanderdoes, who would you pick to be our DT if both are available?Besides, do we have enough time (since EV will sit out a year) to recruit enough OL and prep them against Ed. V ? Thanks.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:21 PM)

As much as I like Simmons, Vanderdoes has a chance to be real special. You just don't find too many players with his combination of size and athletic ability.

Obet Martinez (Huntington Beach,CA )

Please tell me the Trojans are going back to the traditional black cleats!?!

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:22 PM)

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John (Culver City)

With Ed Orgeron having a reputation as being a top recruiter. What is going on that Vanderdoes, Fitts, and McCarthy are all playing across town? Is it simply the scholarship restrictions or a larger problem?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:23 PM)

All three of those situations were unique in terms of how the players ended up at UCLA and you can't really put them on Orgeron. Vanderdoes is the one that stings, as does Fitts since that one got started when SC had to let him know there was no room in spring.

Jeff (Tampa, FL)

What happened to Christian Thomas?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:24 PM)

He took a medical redshirt due to hip injuries.

Alexis Noyes ((Glendale,Ca))

Petros thinks that Ty Isaac isn't coming to USC is thisTrue Garry or Not true cause of the decommits thatHappened on signing day

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:25 PM)

Isaac is already on campus and enrolled in summer school while taking part in summer workouts. There is a rumor that he is unhappy but only a rumor at this point.

RC (Los Angeles)

What type of player is D. Simmons? Would he be able to play right away? And is his transfer to a 'SC more of a formality now - based on his tweets? And lastly, do you have any news on M. Thomas?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:27 PM)

Simmons is an athletic interior defensive lineman and you just can't have too many of those. He's also shown he can start and contribute in Big 12 football so he should be able to transition immediately into the SC rotation once he is eligible in 2014. Nothing new on the Matthew Thomas situation, either from Thomas or Florida State. I'm sure the decision by Notre Dame to not release Vanderdoes from his scholarship makes it easier for FSU to deny Thomas. They can say "Vanderdoes chose to sit out a year, you can do the same if you want to leave".

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:31 PM)

Darrell Rideaux would have to be on that list but there are so many others to name who were good to cover. Ryan Kalil, Mark Sanchez, Carson. One guy that might not be expected was Tony Burnett, you could ask Tony one or two questions and he would be off and running with his answers, he always gave enough information to get what you needed.

Kennedy (Manhattan Beach, CA)

GP, who's your favorite Trojan to cover all-time? Most quotable, etc?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:32 PM)

This was the question to the above answer. Sorry for the confusion.

chris (rockville)

Does Walker play guard or tackle this season?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:33 PM)

I think he plays tackle but it's certainly possible for him to end up at guard. The coaches have made it clear that they've discussed switching Aundrey and Tuerk so that tells me things aren't set in stone with the rotation right now.

David (SLO)

Garry, Have you spoken with Tashoon Smallwood and is he helping the coaching staff recruit Quick from Central High in Fresno? Also, How does Quick differ/compare with JuJu Smith in terms of overall ability?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:36 PM)

Yes, we spoke with Smallwood at the Nike Camp in Oakland. Quick is well aware of the fact that Smallwood wants him at SC and I do think the Trojans have a legitimate shot at him. JuJu is taller and a little thicker, that's not to say Quick isn't solid but they just have different frames. They are both extremely athletic and might be the best two-way players in the class along with Adoree'.

Andrew (Thousand Oaks)

I've heard rumblings that UCLA continued to recruit Vanderdoes after he signed his NLI. This is obviously a big no-no. Any truth to this rumor?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:38 PM)

Yes, that rumbling is out there but there was also a mention in a Sports Illustrated story that one of the reasons FSU isn't releasing Thomas is because they think USC continued to recruit Matthew. It's easy for a rumor to spread but so far there is nothing concrete that anything is true.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Which of the defensive ends is ready to step this year and produce the trademark pass rush USC fans have grown accustomed too?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:39 PM)

The two starting defensive ends are terrific with Williams and Uko. The one who I think can be a real surprise is J.R. Tavai, he really looked good late in spring once he was healthy. I'm also still waiting for Greg Townsend to get in there, too much talent for him not to be a force at some point.

Daniel (Ladera Ranch)

With Texas A&M cutting us off the schedule in 2015/16, what are the possibilities of playing Georgia in 2016 at the Kickoff Classic? When will they fill the vacated spots?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:40 PM)

I haven't heard anything mentioned about that but it would obviously be a high profile game.

RC (Los Angeles)

please project for me the starting offensive line and do you see them being successful this year to have a very productive running game? should we be anticipating a big year from the running game?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:41 PM)

LT - Walker, LG - Tuerk, C - Martin, RG - Martinez, RT - Graf. They are going to be given every opportunity to be that type of dominant offensive line that controls the line of scrimmage. I think they have the potential to do it, they just need to go out and prove that.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Who steps up at WR to prevent teams from double teaming Marquise Lee the entire season on the outside? Also, do you Kiffin will utilize the TEs more to exploit the middle of the field and steer coverage away from Lee?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:43 PM)

I think Nelson Agholor showed in spring that he is ready to step into that role, he looked terrific. I do expect to see the tight ends utilized more because they are certainly capable of being major weapons in this offense. Not only Grimble and Telfer but keep an eye out for Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick too.

Andrew (Thousand Oaks)

Do you think the players actually care what color shoes they wear? If keeping the status quo is so important, why not just wear leather helmets? I think people would have been fine with the cleats last year if they would have won the Rose Bowl/NC

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:45 PM)

i don't think it's high on the importance list. A lot of the players liked the cleats, they like the gloves with the Trojan logo and there are certainly a lot of them who would like to play a game with black helmets or black jerseys. But is it something they spend a lot of time worrying about? No. They put on the shoes and uniform that is in their locker and they go out and play.

Kevin (Reno, NV)

How much more confident are you that USC can leave South Bend with a victory with no Golson under center?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:46 PM)

It's certainly something that tips a little in SC's favor but it's not like Tommy Rees is coming in without any experience. This is a guy with 18 starts under his belt and there is still plenty of other talent in South Bend for this to be a great game.

Andrew (SoCal)

Gary, any chance Hobbi can contribute this year?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:47 PM)

Cyrus was healthy in spring and he looked solid but he is behind Marcus Martin right now and that doesn't look to change. If he can't move past Marcus, any playing time he gets would likely come from injuries to others.

Sammyman (Seattle)

If somebody has already asked this question, or some close variant, ignore it, but is David Sills still considered a serious QB prospect at this point (4 game seasons may not provide much room for growth)? And do you really see Rodney Peete in Cody Kessler? Who would you compare Max Wittek to, at this point, in terms of his upside?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:50 PM)

David Sills is certainly considered a serious prospect, even though his team only played four games last year. He hasn't been taking part as much in spring camp circuit so his name hasn't been out there as much but that doesn't change the fact that he's a good size QB with solid fundamentals. The near future will be important for David because the class of 2015 for QB's looks to be very good in California and his progress is going to be judged against that group.

Ty (Idaho)

Thank you for all your hard work Gary!! In your opinion what do you think our cornerback depth is going to look like come week one??

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:53 PM)

Thank you Ty. I think the key is Josh Shaw, do they move him or not. If he does get moved, I think it will be Kevon Seymour and Shaw as the starters. But Shaw was at safety in the throwing session on Tuesday so that tells me the coaches are considering keeping him at safety. If that happens, I think it will be Seymour and Anthony Brown as starters with Chris Hawkins and Devian Shelton behind them and Ryan Henderson and Torin Harris also available.

Lewis (Huntington Beach, CA)

What is going on with Damian Mama? Is he a Trojan lean? Is anyone else really in it for him?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:54 PM)

I think the Trojans have a terrific shot at Mama. USC and UCLA are mentioned, Alabama has to be considered a threat, especially with the recent commit of his friend Talamaivao. In the end, Mama has family who like SC, he has a former teammate in Nico Falah at SC and I think he ends up a Trojan.

Greg (LA)

most likely to get a PH.D. from USC - Khalid Holmes or Isaiah Wiley?

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:55 PM)

I would take Khaled Holmes against pretty much anybody.

Garry Paskwietz
  (5:55 PM)

Thanks everyone for coming, that's all we have time for today. We will see you next week.
