Chat with Ian Begley

Ian Begley
  (12:13 PM)

Hey guys, Sorry for the delay. I am up in Greenburgh at the Knicks training facility for pre-draft workouts. Plenty going on with the team right now, so let's get right to it.

ed (st augustine, fl)

if you were the knicks, would you draft a PG (because prigioni is free-agent and old), SG (JR Smith opted out and is a free-agent) or PF because K-Mart is a free-agent and STAT is coming off injury????

Ian Begley
  (12:15 PM)

I'd go with a PF and then try to get a backup point guard in free agency. This team badly needs a young rebounding forward and a guy who can score down low. Tony Mitchell, if he's still available, would be perfect.

Ian Begley
  (12:15 PM)

Be right back guys

ed (st augustine, fl)

better back-up SF for carmelo....copeland or novak? ed, knicksfan4life

Ian Begley
  (12:21 PM)

Copeland is much more versatile but they may have to look outside the roster to fill that role

Jason(New York) [via mobile]

What player would you like to see get drafted?

Ian Begley
  (12:22 PM)

I'd like to see them take Tony Mitchell or Deng from Louisville ... don't know if either of those guys will be around with the 24th pick though

Wesley (CA)

You look dishonest.

Ian Begley
  (12:23 PM)

Fair enough.

The Rock (CA)

Can you smell what the Rock is cooking? Of course you can, Big Nose, you can probably smell what China is cooking. You are ugly.

Ian Begley
  (12:23 PM)

Ha. Good one. Thanks.

Jeremy (Westchester)

I've asked this question in multiple ESPN chats like this one and for some reason nobody wants to answer. Why wouldn't the Knicks consider trading Tyson Chandler (as he is our only attractive trade chip) and then either drafting or signing a center. This would free up some cap room to put some pieces around Carmelo which we desperately need!

Ian Begley
  (12:26 PM)

Hey what's up Jeremy, I think the Knicks would consider trading Tyson for the right deal. The problem is, it would be tough to get a center anywhere near Tyson's caliber in return, whether it's in that trade, via the draft or free-agency.

jim va.beach [via mobile]

Hey ian. After reading all recent articles on the knicks, its basically what you see is what you get personal wise. Agree with that? Lastly, who was the GM. Who gave amare and chandler those cap killing contracts? Thanks.

Ian Begley
  (12:27 PM)

Hey Jim, That's surely what it looks like. New York doesn't have much wiggle room to re-shape the roster this offseason, unless Glen Grunwald can pull off a massive trade. Donnie Walsh was in charge when Amar'e signed and Grunwald was in charge when Chandler signed.

Richmond va [via mobile]

If jr leave do u think our best option n free agency is 2 go after nate robinson

Ian Begley
  (12:29 PM)

I'm not sure if the Knicks will have enough money to get Nate here. And I'm also not sure if the way things ended for Nate in NY makes a reunion palatable from the Knicks' perspective

rob ny [via mobile]

Is Carmelo Anthony gonna need surgery for his shoulder

Ian Begley
  (12:30 PM)

Not sure yet, but it seems like he will. Carmelo is resting now with the hope that he can avoid surgery. But I'd be surprised if he doesn't eventually have it. The surgery could force him to miss four weeks.

Ed (Queens Village)

I know this is a Knicks chat. I see the Spurs not satisfied winning Game 1 on road. I've seen teams happy to win Game 1 on road and lose Game 2. Your thoughts?

Ian Begley
  (12:30 PM)

Sign of a great team that they aren't satisfied. But it makes sense that they would say that. They aren't going to forfeit Game 2 because they won Game 1.

MARI NYC [via mobile]

I know looking into the future is hard to do but do you see Melo leaving if he cant get to the NBA finals in the next 2 to 3 years

Ian Begley
  (12:31 PM)

I'd be surprised if he left the Knicks. He may opt out to sign a longer contract with New York, but I'd be surprised if he left the organization.

Davis (Truong)

With Melo saying the knicks need one more scorer who do you think can fill that role on the cheap? will they be desperate enough to sign Iverson?

Ian Begley
  (12:33 PM)

Iverson isn't coming to NY or to any other NBA teams. But your point is spot on. I don't think there's a better option out there in free agency to replace JR. I think he is there best option.

Davis (Boston)

Is it safe to assume that the kicks will retain K-mart, prigioni, and smith or will a team overpay for one of them?

Ian Begley
  (12:34 PM)

Hey Davis, I think that's a pretty safe assumption. I dont see a team going overboard to pay JR because of his poor run in the playoffs. And I think K-Mart and Prigioni will end up back here because they were comfortable in this situation.

Martin (New York, NY)

If the Knicks don't advance further into the playoffs next year, could you see them replacing Woodson? How hot is Woody's seat going into the season?

Ian Begley
  (12:36 PM)

Burning. Woody is going into the final year of his contract, and it is non-guaratneed, so his seat will be plenty hot if the Knicks are healthy and fail to make it out of the second round

Alex (Park Slope)

If Copeland comes back, how many minutes should he get? I say 20 minimum.

Ian Begley
  (12:37 PM)

Hey Alex, I think 15-20 would be fair, especially if he improves on defense. Obviously, he won't be buried to the bench for long stretches like he was this season

Dave (Long Island)

Should we be looking forward to when Amare's contract expires so we can have a clean slate, and spend big on pieces to help melo?

Ian Begley
  (12:39 PM)

Amar'e's contract coming off the books will certainly give the Knicks greater flexibility. But two years is an awfully long time to wait, especially in this market.

Chris (NYC)

Personally i don't see the Knicks going anywhere with Jr. Smith as your second option. Shouldn't the knicks try to find a 2nd scorer and have Jr as the third option.

Ian Begley
  (12:41 PM)

I think you're right when you say JR is best as a third option but the Knicks don't have many other options via free agency or the draft so it's almost impossible to bring in someone else as a secondary scorer for next year

Adam (west new york, nj)

What FA can the knicks get with there mini mid level.

Ian Begley
  (12:45 PM)

Hey Adam, I think you are looking at guys like Will Bynum and Aaron Brooks for point guards. As far as big men go, Andray Blatche, Anthony Tolliver and Chris Wilcox as free agents

Bree (Orange County)

Ian...to your knowledge have the Knicks ever seriously considered signing Chris Smith or was that just wishful thinking on his part?

Ian Begley
  (12:45 PM)

Hey Bree, I think Chris will get a good look during summer league and the team will take it from there ...

Ian Begley
  (12:46 PM)

Alright guys, that's it for me. I have to get back to work. Thanks so much for stopping by. I always appreciate your knowledge of the game and passion. Hope to chat again soon. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me on Twitter (@IanBegley)
