Chat with Keith Law

Klaw
  (2:02 PM)

I'm not sure why everyone is getting so excited about a bunch of Englishmen playing checkers, but in the meantime, it's Klawchat.

Steve (California)

Craziest rumor you are hearing right now?

Klaw
  (2:03 PM)

Nothing I haven't posted - Dominic Smith to Colorado was one, Phil Bickford to Toronto or Seattle was another. Bickford is an odd one, because some scouts adore him, and others want no part of him because he doesn't have a present average breaking ball.

Max (Florida)

Are you going to answer questions not related to the draft today?

Klaw
  (2:04 PM)

A few. We'll go draft-heavy for now.

Jay (London)

See anyone using a similar strategy to Blue Jays' last year? Over slot early and WAY under late

Klaw
  (2:04 PM)

Bunch of teams will. The new system makes that a very appealing strategy.

BillyStarzz (Pittsburgh)

Keith,Is there any rule saying a team cannot draft the same player in this draft that they were unable to sign in last year's draft. I know Appel won't fall to the Pirates but if he did, could they not pick him again and hope for a better outcome?

Klaw
  (2:05 PM)

The player must sign a consent to re-select form. I don't know of a player refusing to do so.

Matt (Minnesota)

You have the Tigers taking Jonathan Crawford, which seems like a popular prediction. What are they seeing in him that you don't, do you think? Is this a "we can make him right" kind of thing? Or a "we think he's better than you do" kind of thing?

Klaw
  (2:06 PM)

They think he's better than I think he is. They could be right. I didn't like Chris Sale out of the draft, not as a first rounder, because of his arm action, the same reason I don't like Crawford as a first rounder.

Jerry (Chicago)

Would you say the Cubs made a mistake in prioritizing Soler over Puig?

Klaw
  (2:07 PM)

No, looks like the right move would have just been to sign them both.

Max (Florida)

What did you think about the Christian Colon pick in 2011 for the Royals? I thought it was a catastrophic pick at the time that didn't make any sense for a team who was still rebuilding.

Klaw
  (2:07 PM)

I didn't think it was catastrophic, just less than ideal. It has turned out to be catastrophic.

Chris (The Mile High City)

Where do you see Hanneman out of BYU getting drafted? 3rd round???

Klaw
  (2:08 PM)

Heard as high as second, but given his age and experience I did not rank him in the top 100 (roughly three rounds' worth).

Nick (Milwaukee)

Let's assume for a minute that Archie Bradley continues to pitch like he has thus far in 2013. I know he made a nice jump in your revised list, but with true aces being a rare breed, is he a potential top 5 overall prospect?

Klaw
  (2:08 PM)

Don't think so, not yet - heard his breaking ball hasn't been as sharp and the control is well ahead of the command right now.

Ryan (Washington, DC)

I have heard a lot of talk about how next year's draft is better than this year's draft. If you are a team sitting at the top of the draft, why not draft a guy and not sign him to move the pick into next year's stronger draft? Also, any chance any of the big 3 (Appel, Gray, or Bryant) slip to the Sox at #7?

Klaw
  (2:09 PM)

I am asked this every year, and every year the answer is the same - because this would be a profoundly stupid thing to do. The value of a player now is higher than the value of a slightly better player a year from now, and that pick a year from now may happen after the termination of your employment.

Trevin (Atlanta)

Last year (2012) you had already looked ahead at this year (2013) and said it was another generally weak draft class. What can you say about 2014?

Klaw
  (2:09 PM)

Better than this year.

JJ (MPLS)

Your best guess - Kohl Stewart going to sign an MLB contract or go to A&M to back up Jonny football?

Klaw
  (2:09 PM)

He's going to sign.

Ryan (Indy)

How much are you buying Teheran's success over that last month or so? Is is stuff/command actually improving, or has it been somewhat of a fluke?

Klaw
  (2:10 PM)

Mixing in the offspeed better and at least throwing the slider for strikes. It wasn't a plus pitch yesterday, but he located it very well.

Grant (Cleveland)

There was a lot of talk about twitter spoiling picks for the NFL draft...What will be your policy? Reporting when you find out or after the pick?

Klaw
  (2:10 PM)

If I hear about a pick before it's made, I'll report it. I think that's my job.

Clark (Smallville)

Any chance George Springer makes it to the majors this year? He is killing it in AA.

Klaw
  (2:11 PM)

Chance he makes it, yes, but he's not killing it when he's swinging and missing as much as he is.

Dave (Chicago)

Have you heard any updates on Sean Manea's medicals? Is he unsignable at this point?

Klaw
  (2:12 PM)

Only that the issue is the hip, and that once that's healed he's supposed to be back at full strength. I think he falls but that teams call on him after the first round to try to cut an over-slot deal. I would.

Steve (California)

Legend Peter Gammons just tweeted that Bickford to Royals is a done deal. Are you hearing the same thing?

Klaw
  (2:12 PM)

I am not. Heard the opposite a few hours ago. Doesn't make him wrong - I guess we could both be right, if Bickford dropped his price suddenly.

Justin (Boston)

Do you really think, Braun, A-Rod and others will be suspended this year? It seems like the players union always wins when it comes to these issues.

Klaw
  (2:14 PM)

I do not. Any such attempt would lead to a legal battle that MLB probably won't win. Even if you despise what Braun and A-Rod are accused of doing, they deserve the same kind of due process that you would expect to receive if you were accused of malfeasance at work.

Dan (Vienna, VA)

I notice many of your draft profiles leave the plate discpline grade blank. Is this due to the player's lack of competition?

Klaw
  (2:14 PM)

I stopped doing them for all players a few years ago, because I didn't think I could accurately gauge it for HS players.

Andrew (Minnesota)

How high must Ryan Boldt be drafted to sign and not head to Nebraska?

Klaw
  (2:15 PM)

I don't think it's about the pick, but the money. I'm guessing first-round money or close to it gets him signed. That'll be a tough physical, though - he's got more than one medical question to answer.

Jim (Rhode Island )

I'm not sold on Stewart as a top ten pick. Aren't scouts worried about his control ?

Klaw
  (2:16 PM)

If he had plus control now, he'd go first overall. Almost every prospect has a question mark on him. He's a great athlete with four pitches, two plus, and a workable delivery.

Chris (Chicago)

That's all we've been hearing is Appel to the Cubs. In your latest mock, you have him to the Astros. Will Gray to the Cubs (particularly with the recent banned-substance test) represent a cost reduction for signing that the Cubs can use later?

Klaw
  (2:16 PM)

Last I heard is that Gray won't take a discount, or if he does it'll be very small.

Chris (Yay Area)

I don't have Insider so I wasn't able to see, but who do you have the Giants taking? What needs do they need to fill in your opinion?

Klaw
  (2:17 PM)

Insert a quarter into your USB slot and I'll tell you.

Chase (Los Angeles)

Is Jack Flaherty the best high school prospect for 2014?

Klaw
  (2:17 PM)

No, but he's up there.

Greg (LA)

Mandatory Puig Question of the Day.

Klaw
  (2:17 PM)

Desultory Small Sample Size-themed Answer.

Jon (DC)

Does the NSA get access to all the chat questions that you don't answer?

Klaw
  (2:17 PM)

Benghazi.

Haratio (Compton)

Will there be pick by pick analysis or a live chat or anything at ESPN this year?

Klaw
  (2:18 PM)

Yes, there will be, featuring Chris Crawford and Jason Churchill. I'll be on Twitter when I'm not on set for BBTN.

Mike B. (Cleveland, OH)

Quick non-draft question. So MLB forces the Indians to switch their 4th of July hats from the obviously offensive Cheif Wahoo version to the block letter "C." Why not just go all the way and force them to get rid of the logo?

Klaw
  (2:19 PM)

Because money.

Not Neal Huntington (Three River Arts Festival )

The ESPN article on Appel ends with this paragraph:"Being No. 1 overall is not important," Appel says. "I want to end up at a place where there's mutual respect between the team and myself, and a place where I'm treated fairly. People ask me if I'm going to sit out another year. Well, I'm not planning on it."Was there some sort of disrespect between Appel and the Pirates on either side? I think the Pirates did all they reasonably could, short of incurring fines and penalties. Up until that point, I thought the whole thing was about money (which I don't have a problem with.) But now I wonder... (Or am I reading too much into this?)

Klaw
  (2:19 PM)

I think if the Pirates had a chance to do this over again, they would handle the process differently.

Jay (MN)

Do you agree with the Buxton/Trout comparisons that are being talked about after Buxton's huge season so far?

Klaw
  (2:20 PM)

No, and I say that as a big Buxton fan who would have taken him first overall last year. Trout was a year younger than Buxton when he dominated that same level, with a higher contact rate. But if Buxton is 95% of Trout that's a pretty freaking good player.

Eric (PA)

Keith, why do you think the Pirates have been linked so heavily to McGuire at 9? What do they see in him that has him going that high?

Klaw
  (2:21 PM)

Best-throwing catcher in the draft, improved his receiving this spring, Pirates must believe he has a chance to hit for a high average.

Consigliari51 (San Jose)

So, you can vote for the Golden Spikes Award online this year, and Kris Bryant (16%) is in a distant third to Beede (42%) and Moran (41%). With whom do I file a formal complaint? Also, Beede???

Klaw
  (2:21 PM)

Beede is there because of his W/L record, obviously. And I don't think I should reveal who I voted for, nor do I need to since you can guess it.

Dave (Menomonee Falls, WI)

You've said that Appel should be in the majors by sometime next season. Do you see Gray making a similar quick trajectory or will he take longer?

Klaw
  (2:22 PM)

I think he'll take longer. Needs to improve the third pitch.

Dave (Menomonee Falls, WI)

Do you see MLB ditching the new slotting system any time soon?

Klaw
  (2:22 PM)

More likely they keep tweaking it without improving it.

Chase (Los Angeles)

Where do you think Arden Pabst and Jeremy Martinez will go?

Klaw
  (2:22 PM)

Both end up at school.

Robert (Iowa)

What will happen in Atlanta when Beachy is ready to come off the DL?

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

Why not use Beachy out of the pen for a while to build him back up? No reason to push him too hard when he's just 11-12 months off surgery. Maybe he moves to the rotation in september to give someone else a rest. Great position to be in.

Nik (Philly)

Obviously Dom Brown can't keep up this pace, but what is your take on this eruption. Was it the hamate injury keeping his numbers down, being too passive, both?

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

Constant messing with his swing.

Eddie (Fresno)

What are your personal thoughts on why high school catchers are such risky 1st round picks?

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

High injury rate plus difficulty of assessing receiving at that level.

Frank (Atlanta)

Was Andrelton Simmons a pop up prospect back in 2010? I have a hard time believing all 30 teams passed on this guy in the 1st round. What's up with that?

Klaw
  (2:24 PM)

I rated him 98th in the class, I think. Most teams wanted to put him on the mound.

Daryl (Scranton, PA)

Why is the Rockies farm system so devoid of talent? Bad drafting? Cheapness? Poor coaching?

Klaw
  (2:27 PM)

Not sure. I don't think they've drafted badly in recent years. (The Reynolds and Weathers picks were bad, but I've heard lots of stories about the scouting department being overruled on those picks.) They've had a lot of injury issues with arms and bats.

James (WV)

Will you be doing an annual 10 year re-draft like you did for 2003? That was a great piece and it's always fun to look back and see who messed up and what could of happened.

Klaw
  (2:27 PM)

Yes, I'll do 2004 next year, and so on.

Troy (new jersey) [via mobile]

Keith. I saw a JP Crawford comp to starlin Castro. Are they similar players with similar skill sets?

Klaw
  (2:27 PM)

Not really.

matt (London, Canada)

Thoughts on 2 Canadians .. Any chance O'Neill sneaks into round #1, or Quantrill being snapped up by Jays?

Klaw
  (2:28 PM)

No chance, and doubtful given the Stanford commitment.

Boa (Anaheim)

Tyler Matzek still a prospect or just "a guy" at this point?

Klaw
  (2:28 PM)

Just a guy, I think. Can't throw strikes. Hasn't recovered from Colorado trying to change his delivery all those years ago.

Charlie (Bethesda)

Thoughts on Rendon playing second? Logical step given the circumstances, dangerous risk, desperation move?

Klaw
  (2:29 PM)

Dangerous, given his three major ankle injuries. If he fails to move quickly enough on a pivot, they'll take him off the field in two pieces.

Jeff Sullivan (Belchertown, MA)

Any idea on Bickford's asking price?

Klaw
  (2:29 PM)

I won't repeat the number I heard, in case it's inaccurate. It's large.

James (WV)

Didn't Dylan Bundy say we wanted 30 million or something ridiculous? How seriously do you have to take these kids demands?

Klaw
  (2:31 PM)

Yes, same adviser who's handling Gray.

Azeem Kazi (Monroe)

Cesar Puello now OPSing .999 after 2 more homers today, is he a legit prospect?

Klaw
  (2:31 PM)

Legit prospect, yes. Don't think he's a future star.

dj (new mexico)

Many scouts are saying DJ Peterson being the best hitter in the draft and you wouldn't take him till the secon round? LOL!

Klaw
  (2:31 PM)

Scouts without names? I'm sure some people think that. I see a six foot 1b without power.

Scott (Lincolnshire)

How much info do you get on team's interest in 2nd and 3rd round picks? I'm greedy, I want more rounds from your mock draft!

Klaw
  (2:32 PM)

Very little. It's not worth the time investment to figure that stuff out.

Justin Bieber (Miami Heat)

Hey Keith just wanted to ask your option on my outfit from the other night?

Klaw
  (2:32 PM)

Dope.

Andrew (Richmond)

Hey Klaw any chance UVA's Kyle Crockett sneaks into one of the top 2 rounds tonight?

Klaw
  (2:32 PM)

I think he goes in the third, but I've rated him more in the fourth-round range.

Jerry (NYC)

This morning Sickels had Moran dropping to the Mets...is this at all likely? Would the Mets take him there?

Klaw
  (2:32 PM)

No.

Klaw
  (2:32 PM)

No, as in, not even a little likely.

Adam (LA)

How realistic do you think the rumors about Smith to the Rockies are? If that happens what does that do to Bryant and Moran?

Klaw
  (2:33 PM)

Two sources told me last night that they're not taking him, although they like him a lot.

Jeremy (Chicago)

Arismendy Alcantara? Can he be top 100?

Klaw
  (2:33 PM)

Yes. He was one of my Cubs sleepers this year.

Dave (NJ)

Re: Peterson - if he had an insider subscription and read your redradt piece, he'd see that the consensus is often wrong. Besides, consensus is boring.

Klaw
  (2:33 PM)

I'm wrong a lot too. I think I can still offer an opinion, though.

Brian (Atlanta)

What's the fascination with Tyler Danish? His senior stats were impressive, but the arm action is terrible and he seems locked into a reliever. What am I missing?

Klaw
  (2:34 PM)

I have no idea. It is the worst arm action I've seen on anyone in this draft, including guys I've seen live and ones I've only seen on video.

Kirk (The TC)

Tom Windle picked day 1 or 2?

Klaw
  (2:34 PM)

Day 1.

Chavez (Denver)

What time does this thing start?

Klaw
  (2:34 PM)

Houston is officially on the clock at 7 pm ET.

Reggie (Gurnee)

Will you please share any anecdotal reasons why redheads are frowned upon by old school baseball men? Is it as simple as, "they don't have 'the good face'"? Thanks! Have a great draft!!!

Klaw
  (2:35 PM)

Eugenics.

Gio (sf)

Being a year later, what player was the steal of last years draft?

Klaw
  (2:35 PM)

Addison Russell.

Lou Holth (Atlanta)

How do the Braves keep producing solid talent when experts such as yourself have criticized the way they've drafted the past few years?

Klaw
  (2:36 PM)

Do they? Their drafts haven't been that productive, especially high picks. They've been very shrewd in trades and in the free-talent market.

MARI IL [via mobile]

IS there anyway the cubs dont draft appel or gray

Klaw
  (2:36 PM)

It's at least 90% that they take one of those two arms.

Ryan (Pittsburgh)

Obviously Houston doesn't owe it to anyone to let word out about who they are picking, but do you think they are actually still debating internally? Luhnow and the scouting director have to know who they are taking by now, right?

Klaw
  (2:36 PM)

No, I believe they are still working it out. Remember that money is the last variable here, but the most significant at this point.

Trey (Santa Monica, CA)

Stanek is old for his class, has unspectacular stuff, poor command, thin frame, questionable mechanics, and hasn't missed bats in college. Why is he considered a top prospect?

Klaw
  (2:37 PM)

Unspectacular stuff? He hits 98 or 99 as a starter on a regular basis.

Yannick (Missouri)

Matt Olsen or Keon Barnum?

Klaw
  (2:37 PM)

Olson.

Scott (Dayton)

Any thoughts on the Shockers ousting Gene Stephenson?

Klaw
  (2:38 PM)

You mean the coach who probably encouraged one of his pitchers to try to kill an opposing batter in the on-deck circle? Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Pablo (City of Champions)

Clint Barmes sporting a .526 OPS. Manny Machado showing Trout-like signs. How much will the Pirates regret taking Taillon over Machado?

Klaw
  (2:38 PM)

Taillon's not exactly Daniel Moskos here, but yes, I do think they will regret that pick even though Taillon projects to have a great career.

Don (DC)

Is it crazy to think the Nats could take local prospect McGuire with their first selection at #68?

Klaw
  (2:39 PM)

I don't see the logic there. Is it just because he's local?

Brian (FL)

Last year you said Buxton's comp for ceiling was Eric Davis, would you say it's higher now?

Klaw
  (2:39 PM)

Does it get much higher? Davis would have been a Hall of Famer if he'd stayed healthy.

John (Minneapolis)

In 2014, Can Alex Jackson be the exception to the HS catcher history like Mauer was?

Klaw
  (2:40 PM)

Maybe. I want to see him more, but was very impressed in a brief look last summer.

Mark (Boston)

"You mean the coach who probably encouraged one of his pitchers to try to kill an opposing batter in the on-deck circle? Good riddance to bad rubbish." Please elaborate...

Klaw
  (2:42 PM)

Ben Christensen beaned Anthony Molina while Molina was in the on-deck circle. Molina wasn't looking and couldn't protect himself, and ended up blinded in one eye.

Don (DC)

Re McGuire: I just meant was it a reach or not? I know hes more of a 3rd round guy, but the hip is holding him back a bit.

Klaw
  (2:43 PM)

OK, that makes a little more sense. I don't think he's a reach, but the industry would. I also think he'd want more than slot there, which is $820K, although that's a bit of a guess.

Will (Georgia)

How good is this Jonathan Singleton kid? Comes back from suspension and hits 3 home runs in his first 3 games.

Klaw
  (2:43 PM)

I think he could be a star.

Roger (OH)

Thoughts on the whole Chris Perez situation, besides the obvious initial thought of "how stupid can you be?" Also, I remember reading somewhere a few years back that the MLB does not test players for pot (neither in-season or during the offseason). Is this still the case?

Klaw
  (2:45 PM)

Mostly yes, how stupid could you be. I don't care about the pot usage - I think it is irrelevant for MLB and players shouldn't be tested for it - but using the mail means you get the feds involved.

Chris (Chicago)

Do draft days make you miss the front office?

Klaw
  (2:45 PM)

I miss the camaraderie of the draft room, the strategizing, and the tension of waiting to see who'll be there at your pick. I don't miss the long hours or the time away from my family.

Anchor bar staff (Buffalo)

Scouting report on Tom Murphy please... is he a potential Big League catcher?

Klaw
  (2:47 PM)

Doubtful. Maybe a backup, but even that's a reach - he's a poor receiver and won't hit for much if any average. He's 22 right now in low-A, in a crazy hitters' park.

Tom (Denver)

Can you tell me what the much-maligned "inverted W" delivery is, as well as whether Appel has it? Thanks for all your work, Keith!

Klaw
  (2:47 PM)

It's more myth than reality, and no, Appel doesn't do it.

Darren (UK)

One point of note on the Perez situation.... whilst it doesn't look good, it's not confirmed yet that the package in question was meant for him.... Police made a point of stating many problems with previous inhabitants of the property.

Klaw
  (2:48 PM)

"Catnip." "That's ... not mine."

Alex (Denver)

Do you look at other mock drafts to compare your notes to theirs?

Klaw
  (2:48 PM)

I don't, because I want mine to only reflect my own research.

Murray (Huntington Beach)

Who is the youngest player you've ever gone to personally scout?

Klaw
  (2:48 PM)

I saw Bryce Harper at 15 at the Area Code Games.

Darren (UK)

Can you explain why the "inverted W" isn't just called the "M"?!

Klaw
  (2:49 PM)

Because it makes it sound more technical.

Craig Smith (Texas)

Why have the Brewers struggled draft wise the past few seasons?

Klaw
  (2:50 PM)

That's a very good question, but it's reflected in the state of the farm system right now. Losing that first-round pick this year hurts a ton - and multiple sources have said that was Attanasio's choice, not Melvin's (or Seid's).

Thomas (Berkeley)

You said you don't think players should be tested for marijuana usage. That implies you think players *should* be tested for other drugs. Yet you don't think proven performance enhancing drug usage should preclude a player from going to the HOF. Logic fail.

Klaw
  (2:54 PM)

The logic fail is in your inference, saying that the statement that I don't think players should be tested for pot implies that I think players should be tested for PEDs, which it clearly does not. It's a fallacy of weak inference.

Renan (NYC)

Hey Keith, I know one of the reasons that you have Frazier below Meadows is his height (or lack thereof) but do you have the same concerns about Smith and Peterson, especially as future 1b? Or does the fact that they're likely to be at 1b mitigate that some?

Klaw
  (2:55 PM)

It's not height specifically but what that implies for future development and power. I prefer Smith's swing (mechanics and left-handedness) to the others'.

Justin (Redlands, CA)

Have you read The Brothers Karamazov? What's your take on Russian Lit in general?

Klaw
  (2:55 PM)

No, it's on the summer list. Have liked most of the Russian novels I've read. They require a lot of thought, but in a good way.

Ethan (TOR)

Keith how much weed do you go through a week?

Klaw
  (2:56 PM)

Depends on how much rain we get. Purslane just takes over the yard, and we've got spurge around the citrus trees.

Nick (Los Angeles)

Thanks for all the hard work and awesome content. Much appreciated...became an insider to read your stuff and it's worth every penny

Klaw
  (2:56 PM)

Thank you - it's nice to hear that this time of year.

Max (Florida)

Why do you hate George R.R. Martin so much? Are you too soft for a realistic middle ages setting?

Klaw
  (2:56 PM)

That's not what your girlfriend said.

Rick (Alexandria)

Any good recommendations for summer reading that is light and under 400 pages? I'm slow, okay?

Klaw
  (2:56 PM)

Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.

Mack ( IN)

Do you realize that you have no moral compass?

Klaw
  (2:57 PM)

Bro, do you even lift?

Leslie (Denver )

What are your thoughts on some of the LSU Tiger baseball team in this years draft? With Aaron Nola, Bregman, Katz and others, do you see any of them contributing right away to a team?

Klaw
  (2:57 PM)

Nola is eligible next year, Bregman in 2015, both likely first rounders.

Zach (Fargo)

Wasn't that a fallacy of presumption? Guess there's some blurring...

Klaw
  (2:58 PM)

I am not sure. I mix those up sometimes.

Loren (SLC)

What's the over/under on picks that you peg exactly in the first round? 7.5?

Klaw
  (2:58 PM)

This year, if I got that many, I'd be thrilled. If I have Houston wrong, I don't know when I'd get the first one exactly right.

Ray (Saudi Arabia)

Should the baseball-side of the Astros give some weight to the business-side and select one of the more MLB ready players with the 1-1?

Klaw
  (2:59 PM)

No. The business side should be barred from the room until the pick is made, on principle.

Colin (STL)

Have you heard any whispers of the Cardinals re-drafting Austin Wilson with their 2nd first-round pick? Seems like late twenties is where most people have ranked him.

Klaw
  (2:59 PM)

Nothing beyond "well, they liked him in high school." That said, I'd take him at 28 and be thrilled if I were them.

Nick (Long Island, NY)

How confident are you about your mock in comparison to other years? Are you hearing more/less concrete things from clubs these days with the new rules?

Klaw
  (3:00 PM)

Less confident, because of the ripple effect of what the Astros do. If we knew 1-1, I think all our mocks would be more accurate.

John (San Jose)

What are you hearing about the Giants pick at 25? John Barr has done a great job with Bobby Evans abd Sabean

Klaw
  (3:00 PM)

I'd heard they wanted a bat, but then I've only heard them linked to arms when talking specific names.

Dave (Tampa)

Isnt the fact that Appel does not have to sign by the deadline everyone else has to sign by a huge factor in that he can hold up a whole teams draft by waiting until after the deadline?

Klaw
  (3:00 PM)

Ergo, whoever takes him will want to have something in place beforehand.

cole (dallas)

whats up?

Klaw
  (3:01 PM)

oh nothing, quiet day, u?

Dave (Phoenix, AZ)

Keith, Thanks for all the work you put into draft content. Do you see anyone from ASU getting drafted this year?

Klaw
  (3:01 PM)

Trevor Williams in second round.

Eli (Toronto)

What would happen if a first round player failed a subsequent physical, could the team opt not to sign him and get a compensatory pick next year?

Klaw
  (3:02 PM)

Yes. Question then is what happens to the player; the Barrett Loux situation provides some precedent, but not a perfect one.

Mike (Toronto)

are you more bearish on Beede than others? (your comment on his W/L record....)

Klaw
  (3:02 PM)

No, I just don't see any argument that he was top three in the country this year.

Michael (Chicago)

Happy belated 40th birthday!

Klaw
  (3:02 PM)

Thank you. My birthdays are more important now to my daughter than they are to me.

Stan (Chicago)

addison russell and his .215/.304/.410 line at A-ball was the steal of the 2012 draft??

Klaw
  (3:04 PM)

He's 19 in high-A. The only other prep guy from last year's class to go to high-A, rather than low-A or extended, was Courtney Hawkins, who has punched out 54 times in 98 AB.

Jeff (SD)

Is Baxendale ths much better then his 10th round selection?

Klaw
  (3:05 PM)

Stuff is very pedestrian. Might be a fifth starter.

Mac (IL)

Anybody from the University of Arizona getting drafted this yr?

Klaw
  (3:05 PM)

Konner Wade maybe 4th-5th round, Johnny Field somewhere around there, don't see either as an avg big leaguer.

Kyle (Bloomington)

Ever watch Burn Notice? Got really into it the last month

Klaw
  (3:06 PM)

What is Burn Notice?

Kyle (Bloomington)

Anyone from Indiana University worth mentioning? Went to the regional last weekend and the team looked solid offensively

Klaw
  (3:07 PM)

Heard Slegers in that 4th-5th round range.

John T (Eagan, MN)

But to follow up, if you can get a fifth starter from your 10th round selection, you would do it every year in a heartbeat, no?

Klaw
  (3:08 PM)

If you get a big leaguer there, it's a win. I'm not sure Baxendale is that, yet, but I'm saying there's a chance.

Ben (Canada)

Can you see either Frazier or Moran dropping to the Jays?

Klaw
  (3:08 PM)

Yes, actually a good chance one of them gets there.

Klaw
  (3:08 PM)

I wonder about the Pirates at 9 - would they pass on McGuire if either of the Georgia twins gets there, or is their commitment to McGuire firm in any scenario. I don't know that for sure. I don't know much for sure this year, to be honest.

Ryan (Markham)

Klaw - I hear the Jays have shown *no* interest in Clint Frazier. Do you think that is true, and if so, care to speculate on why that would be? Thank you

Klaw
  (3:09 PM)

I do, and I think there are a lot of reasons. Many people don't like the swing mechanically, he struggles with offspeed stuff, and he may end up a LF. He's not a lock - he's a very good prospect, but I hear readers treating him like he's the next Mike Trout, which he's not.

Frank (AZ)

It seems like a lot of misinformation getting fed to the media surrounding the draft is common in the NBA and NFL to drum up speculation and change a players' value; do you ever feel like a team source is using you to affect another team's strategy?

Klaw
  (3:09 PM)

Yes. Part of my job is weeding through that stuff.

Baron (Anaheim)

Do you think the Angels might take Cody Reed with their first pick (53)? Would he help them right away?

Klaw
  (3:11 PM)

Don't think he gets there.

Dan (PA)

On your podcast, Jim Callis said that the Pirates had a deal with David Dahl until Appel fell to them. In hindsight, is Dahl a better pick than whomever they could get at 9 this year?

Klaw
  (3:11 PM)

Jim is correct on that. And they would be better off if they'd taken and signed Dahl. Also, the Rockies wouldn't trade Dahl for the 9th pick right now if they were permitted to do so.

PW (San Francisco)

Do you think a team will ever go all out in a given draft and spend big dollars above slot and above their allocation even knowing it will cost them draft picks the following year? It's kind of the opposite of the "is it worth not signing a pick this year" question - is forfeiting next year worth signing more guys this year?

Klaw
  (3:12 PM)

Yes. We're just waiting for the next Bryce Harper type.

Kyle (Bloomington)

Who gets to the majors first from this class?

Klaw
  (3:12 PM)

Probably a reliever like Cory Knebel. First impact guy would be Appel.

Geordy (NJ)

I've seen some Cleveland faithful adamant that Frazier can stick in CF and therefore he's the most logical pick. I've heard future LF from everyone else. Who's right?

Klaw
  (3:12 PM)

He's not a CF. Centerfield is hard.

Jay (Gilbert, AZ)

Why are scouts/analysts so split over Bickford? Is the lack of quality secondary pitches? Is that somewhat normal for prep pitchers?

Klaw
  (3:13 PM)

He has a 40 breaking ball right now. How many big league RH starters are there who operate with no better than a fringe-average breaking ball?

Mark (Chicago)

Sorry for the third rendition, but desperately looking for an expert opinion on the perfect post engagement dinner in Chicago. Not sure if you are familiar with the Chicago dining scene. Any suggestions?

Klaw
  (3:13 PM)

Not that familiar but I loved the Purple Pig when I was there last year. My colleague Molly Knight has been after me for two years to try the Girl and the Goat too.

Steve (Brooklyn)

The Red Sox have Moran over Meadows, right?

Klaw
  (3:13 PM)

I believe so.

Bob (SF)

What round does AJ Vanegas go? Do you think a Bay Area team would go after him? WOuld he sign?

Klaw
  (3:14 PM)

He should go back to school. A healthy year could put him in the top 40 picks.

Brint (Wichita)

Who is the best prospect you've ever seen? I know for the NFL, John Elway seems to be the consensus best prospect

Klaw
  (3:14 PM)

I didn't scout him, but Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. come up often when I ask older scouts that question. Sometimes Josh Hamilton too. For pitchers the answer is often Brien Taylor.

Jason (Philly)

My daughter just turned 6 months old. What are some good father daughter activities for the first year or 2?

Klaw
  (3:15 PM)

Biggest thing is to get down on the floor and interact with her at her level.

Josh (Richmond, VA)

Going back to last year's draft knowing what you know now, would you still advise the Nats to select Giolito with their pick? Thanks.

Klaw
  (3:15 PM)

Yes. Thought it was a great move.

Adam (TN)

Where does Cord Sandberg go in your eyes?? Is he better of going to MSU and playing both sports??

Klaw
  (3:16 PM)

Would not shock me at all if someone like Texas popped him at the end of the first round.

Russ (Cape Porpoise, ME)

When we ask you about player XYZ, how much about him are you carrying around in your head, and how much are you depending on your notes?

Klaw
  (3:16 PM)

I haven't consulted any notes today. Sometimes I do but it would slow me down too much.

tlheard (Cartwright, NL)

Seems to be a 1/2 dozen realistic picks for the Jays at 10. Guessing they're going for best player available?

Klaw
  (3:17 PM)

I believe they take the best of Ball, Mcguire, Crawford still available. (Best in their view, that is.)

Jason (So Cal)

Could you see Gosuke Katoh going in rounds 2-3?

Klaw
  (3:17 PM)

I've heard that was possible but I would not take him there. He needs to go to school and demonstrate he can get stronger. He's way too thin right now.

Mike (NYC)

Is it ever going to come together for Belt?

Klaw
  (3:17 PM)

Been much better since the swing overhaul in late April. Just has to show he can hold that for a full season before we buy back in.

Ryan (Pittsburgh)

You going into a days-long hibernation of sleeping, reading and good eating after writing a wrap-up draft column?

Klaw
  (3:18 PM)

Vacation next week to pack up the house. We're moving back east - my wife wanted to be closer to family, and with my Baseball Tonight duties it made more sense to be within driving distance of Bristol. I'll miss Arizona terribly, though. Absolutely loved living there.

Kenny (San Diego)

The year the Yanks drafted Cito Culver in the 1st, where did you have him ranked?

Klaw
  (3:19 PM)

I did not have him on my top 100, nor did I have Bichette Jr. on my top 100 in that year. I don't line up well with their preferences, I guess.

Greg (Cincy)

Should Austin Wilson go back to school?

Klaw
  (3:20 PM)

No. Time to develop and get away from Stanford's coaching staff.

Cody (Mount Vernon, IA)

If you were with the Astros and you knew Manea would get to you in the second round and you cold sign him over slot would you advocate taking Moran at 1.1?

Klaw
  (3:21 PM)

If they can lock Manaea in at 40 on a deal, that'd be great, but they should still try to get the best player possible at 1-1. If they could sign Appel for $5.5 million at 1, they could give Manaea $3 million at 40 and still have another $700K in surplus to use on later picks, with slot at 74 around $747K.

JimBeau (Left Coast)

RE: on the floor with the little ones. When my daughters were little we had almost a ritual where I would get on the floor and they would crawl, pummel, harass or just cuddle with me. And then I would lay on my back and pick them up in the air by their waist, "flying" them while singing (badly) "Fly Me To The Moon". There is a current ad on TV now that has that as a theme song, and both girls have mentioned warmley remmbering our early routine. They are 13 and 11 now. Sigh. So nice!

Klaw
  (3:22 PM)

Great story - you'll never regret time spent with your kids. My daughter and I have a bunch of rituals like that - her running across the room to tackle ("tacko") me from a sitting position, or me "exercising" by doing leg lifts while I was on my back and she laid down on my shins, which I can still do, sort of, now that she's over 60 pounds.

Eric (Chicago) [via mobile]

2 years you were in Arizona? Best place to go out and eat in your opinion? Also ever go to Pinnacle Peak?

Klaw
  (3:23 PM)

Just short of 3 years. Citizen Public House is our favorite fine dining spot. Hillside Spot is our favorite for a family meal. Also love Pizzeria Bianco, crudo, Searsucker, cibo ... I could go on ...

Don (RI)

Klaw - Are you moving back to MA or perhaps CT, NY etc...Thanks!

Klaw
  (3:24 PM)

Delaware - splits the distance between my family in NoVA and my in-laws in NJ.

Brent (St. Paul)

Was Harper a beast at 15?

Derek (Sheboygan, WI)

What do you think of Cavan Biggio? I'm not sure if you've wrote about it, I couldn't find anything.

Klaw
  (3:24 PM)

All of my scouting reports are here: http://insider.espn.go.com/mlbdraft/results/_/sort/name

Klaw
  (3:25 PM)

@Brent: Yes.

Greg (Cincy)

Thoughts on Jesse Winkers season in A ball?

Klaw
  (3:26 PM)

He's very good. Advanced bat with some thump. I whiffed on him last year, saw him really bad and didn't get a positive enough report to reevaluate. That's on me.

Tom (Chandler, AZ)

Don't move back.. we need to keep all the sane people we can in AZ! Can you take Sherriff Joe with you?

Klaw
  (3:26 PM)

Hey, we tried to recall him, but the voters weren't interested. I don't like living in his jurisdiction.

Chris (NY)

In light of your love of food, which city/country would you most like to visit?

Klaw
  (3:28 PM)

That I've never visited? Japan would be my first choice, Morocco second. I've been to Italy twice, and will go back again soon to see my cousins, but that's the best food-tourism place I've ever visited.

Klaw
  (3:29 PM)

OK, back to work for me. I'll be on Twitter (@keithlaw) during the draft tonight, on Sportscenter a little after 9 pm, and on Baseball Tonight at 10 pm and 1 am (all times Eastern). Thanks for all the questions, and for your readership this week and, since my anniversary at ESPN was Saturday, for the past seven years as well.
