Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

It's the fastest hour in golf. May be a bit soaked but I'm here in the media center (tent) at Merion feeling really bad for this golf course as another flash flood waring just came out. Talked to Ernie Els after his press conference and he said they're gonna go LOW this week. How low do you think these guys can get?BRING IT!!!!

Duffer (Illinois)

Does everyone that makes the cut make money or is it a certain amount of spots?

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

As long as you're not an amateur and you make the weekend... you're getting a paycheck!

Dre (D.C.)

Is this congressional all over again because I know everyone is saying that it has a chance. Granted Congressional had a multitude of issues during the year, Congressional right now would play 16 shots harder than it did in 11 (I belong there)

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Expect to see at least 25-30 guys under par this week. That's nothing against the golf course that's just how it's gonna work out because of the conditions.

Chris (Ridgeland, MS)

Yes, another Tiger question! But let's face it, nobody moves the needle like Tiger. I hear all the time Butch Harmon was his best swing coach. Do you feel he now has more shots in his arsenal under Foley compared to when Harmon was working with him, because Im not sure im buying that? Unreal iron play under Haney if I may.

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Tiger has always had all the shots under all three coaches. What he has now is a swing that doesn't put as much torque on his knee. I think each coach he had brought something different to the table and Tiger isn't going to just drop everything from each guy, he keeps what works best for him.

Jake (Texas)

Rain today, no rain Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by rain Thursday and no rain Friday-Sunday. What's the winning score?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

What forecast are you looking at? 80% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow here, then 80% Wednesday and 60% Thursday. Can't say winning score yet. WILD guess... -14

Dre (D.C.)

I am a Tiger fan, but after memorial for some reason I am picking Angel C.any thoughts on this

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Memorial should not have scared you off him that bad.

Alex (Anaheim)

Who's your dark horse pick for the US Open?

robb (Colorado)

Okay, MC. I asked you this last week and deferred your answer to this week. Who is your sleeper pick at Merion?

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

A sleeper or darkhorse is someone that's isn't recognized by most people. Watch Michael Thompson this week.

Hi (Mc)

What's the percent of greens tiger has to hit to win?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

70% minimum

Tom (Verona, WI)

Good afternoon, MC! Are the ESPN golf writers sharing a house for the US Open? If so, who gets first choice on a room?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

Not this week, roughing it in a hotel!!

Curtis C (Oregon)

Very excited for the US Open this week but also conflicted on what I think will happen. The course is gettting hammered with rain but part of me thinks it will hold up. What's your opinion on how low the players scores are going to go?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

When a guy like Ernie Els tells me they're gonna go low and almost apologizes for it, that scares the devil outta me.

Rory (Ohio)

Will Sergio have to apologize for the rest of his life

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

No, but he'll have cops with him all week this week. By next year IF he can win, it'll just be an ugly footnote

Ben (Norristown, PA)

Hey, MC my girlfriend surprised me with a pair of tickets for the final round. Does this mean I have to start looking for a ring ?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

WHEW!! How long y'all been together? You gotta at least get her some sweet diamond earrings and start LOOKING for a ring to match maybe for Christmas.

Eric (Austin, Texas)

Does a wet Merion help the field catch Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Yes, the lower the field can go the harder it will be for Tiger. He's always been the best defensive golfer in the world but this week is gonna be ALL offense, which is where Tiger struggles on late Saturday and Sundays.

Griffin (NY)

If Merion plays soft, will it play extremely long due to some holes being very long already and the shorter ones playing longer with no roll in fairways?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Yes and no. Long off the tee but with greens being soft, these guys can still be aggressive with a 5 irons cause they won't fear balls running off greens with long irons.

Dan (CA)

This rain is again one of the many reasons more US Opens should be on the west coast.

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

No, the rain is why we shouldn't expect every US Open to have scores over par. Golf isn't supposed to only be played in the sunshine. A fair test should be in all conditions. Except ice and lightning.

Paul (NYC)

When David Graham won the 1981 US Open at Merion he took home $55,000. Would it matter to this week's field if that remained the top payout? I say 100% would still play for the chance to win the Major.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

If they didn't pay anything at every major, all the best would play. That's not the case for any regular events on any other tours but for a major... money doesn't matter.

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Sorry about the weather. Looks like it may rain on Thursday, too. What impact will that have for the first two rounds?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

Not your fault, unless you know magic and voodoo. Expect between -8 and -10 to be leading going into Saturday.

Nick (Canada)

If the final score ends up being -13 we will say but is a nail bitter coming down the stretch with 3 or 4 guys in the hunt will that save the tourney, and make an argument for them to comeback in the future?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

I sure hope so. Old courses like these still demand great shots and to take them away because the perception is they're too short is small minded and wrong.

MARI IL [via mobile]

First time submitting a question always enjoy your chats with that said what does tiger have to do to earn back everyones respect and maybe fear it seems as though some are still in the background laughing at him

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

NO one is laughing at a guy who's got four wins so far this season. He has all golfers respect, they may not fear him as they once did but respect was never lost.

Rory (Ohio )

-8 so basically we're headed for another easy stinker like congressional

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Why was Congressional a stinker? Unless you just like watching car wrecks? The good news is the rough is so bad here that anything over 140 yards ain't happening.

Aaron (Wisco)

When did the chat get spellcheck all of a sudden?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

When I got an "edit" button!

Paul (Portland, OR)

Well, I see Phil the Tinkerer changed from the claw grip back to the regular grip on his putter. Does any pro make as many changes throughout a year?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Some make even more during the round!!

Brint (Wichita)

Where are you staying?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Why? You wanna stalk me?! hahaha

Tim (SF)

Scott Stallings - T4, T4, T2 the last 3 events...made > $1mm. He gonna win this year? and does he make a decent showing in the Swamp this week? er...I mean Merion.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

I have him inside the top ten... and maybe even higher but you'll have to wait to see where!

Curtis C (Oregon)

Will the course play longer because its so wet and if so will it matter?

Jack (Cleveland)

Have you seen Tiger out on the course? How is he looking? You picked him to win MC

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Just on tv, but I'm sticking with him to win

Stephen (Granite)

How much thought is put into pairings? The Tiger group is awfully juicy, although throwing Sergio in there would have worked well, also.

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

The USGA does take some time to come up with interesting pairings. They used to be even better with having named groups... "heart throbs", "bombers", "anger management" but now they have made it trickier.

Brandon (Lodi)

How many guys have a realistic shot this week with weather the way that it is?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

about 30

Joe (Connecticut)

What do you think about there being no intermediate rough?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

It's the right thing for a shorter course. Makes sense and I agree with it.

bobloblaw (Jupiter, FL)

Is Harris English in the field?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

No and that seems ridiculous to me

Sal (Philadelphia)

MC how bad is the rough over there actually? I have a buddy that belongs over there and says its almost knee high in some spots. If thats the case and the fairways are as narrow and difficult to hit as they're making it sounds in addition to the pressure of a US Open this could still give the players fits. Thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

The type of rough doesn't fall over when it gets high which makes it great for a US Open track. Every golf ball will fall to the bottom.. DO NOT miss fairways, you will pay if you do if you're outside 150 yards.

David (Pitt)

How many times have you caddied in the US Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Twice. Pinehurst (Omar Uresti) and Shinnecock (Daniel Chopra)

Ed (Long Island)

Looks like Phil is going to leave the driver home, will that cost him the chance of getting home in 2 on any of the par 5's?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

His driver would have cost him any chance of getting home in two!

Stephen (Granite)

Does the golfer arrange for the caddy's meal and lodging while at tourneys?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

No. Caddies are responsible for all their own travel 90% of the time. Now sometimes if a guy rents a house he'll have the caddie stay with him. I've done that a few times. very convenient. Also caught a few private jet rides as well. That's AWESOME!

Mike (montana)

Will golf survive after Tiger retires?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Did golf survive when he was out hurt? Did golf survive after Jack? Of course. Basketball survived without Jordan. There will always be a "next".

David (Pitt)

What's your favorite US Open memory?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

US Open at Pinehurst. Practice round with Duval (his dad walked with us telling stories) then Saturday being first off as a one some. Just me and Omar. I grabbed the mic on the first ee and had everyone laughing, then Omar smoked drive right down the middle. He and I still talk about that day together.

David (North Carolina)

Any young ameaturs this year that can play as well as Beau Hossler did Thursday and Friday.

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Gavin Hall and he's only 18 (youngest in the field)

Rob (Oakland)

Any big regrets as a caddy?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

I still don't have a PGA Tour win, have a Nationwide (Web.Com) Tour Championship win and a Kodak Challenge win but... I'm still hungry and I know I'm a good caddy.

Kip (ATL)

How good is Rory really? Threat?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

He's a real threat this week in these conditions

Ben (Columbus)

Does the wet conditions make the rough more of a penalty?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

yes because wet rough grabs the shaft even more than dry

DB (Panama)

Do tournaments provide refreshments and snacks to the players/caddies on the course or do the caddies neeed to carry all of that?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Usually there are snacks on at least the 1st and 10th tees. Drinks on almost every tee box.

Jake (NYC)

Call is over. I'm back. Did I miss anything?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

You have a lot of reading to do.

Rory (Ohio )

Did Tiger and Sergio speak today?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Shook hands but Sergio is going to meet with him privately so they can talk... that's the rumor

Nick (Canada)

Do we ever see Tiger come from behind to win a major?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Nope.

Dre (D.C.)

I am confused though that everyone is having a low score win it, when the rough is so long and thick that when someone hits in there they need to call the coast guard to get them out

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Because guys will hit a ton of fairways and greens. The ones they miss, because the greens will be soft, they will fire wedges at to save pars.

David (Pitt)

Will you ever caddy again?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Maybe someday, but I've never missed a cut doing this!! haha

Rick (Ottawa)

US Opens should always be about fast and tricky conditions, not this type of "if you hit the fairway its now target golf" golf. Is it time to have a US Open in the south?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Tricky is not a word I want used to describe a US Open, and you do understand that summer is FL's rainy season right?

Rory (Ohio )

I agree with Rick from Ottawa

Josiah (Burlington, VT)

Will the course favor a Kuchar? Accurate but not long off the tee, or will the fact that very few people will be using drivers change the dynamic?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

Favor, no, but it will allow him to be a factor like he wasn't at other US Open venues.

Colin (Philly)

How do you plan to spend your week at the open? Will u follow a particular group or stay at a couple holes?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

I'll be doing a live chat called GolfCast Thursday thru Sunday. So if you're at work and can't watch you can hang with me!

Joe (Connecticut)

Thanks for another great hour! The fastest out there!

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Told ya!Remember... Thursday and Friday starting at 8 am EST Sarah and I will be doing live coverage so stop in and we can chat as long as you want!!!Thanks everyone!@ESPNCaddie on TwitterESPNCaddie@gmail.comMC
