Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric, we've got an hour, thanks for showing up and let's answer some questions!

Icabod (Sleepy Hollow, NY)

Is this the real Starling Marte? He just became a FA in my league. He is still stealing but is batting 200 last month.

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

All of this was expected, frankly. Can't strike out at that rate, without walking, and hit .330 for long. Still, has 15-homer power, and clearly can run. Should remain owned in all leagues, so go get him.

Paul (Sporerville)

Who would you be most willing to speculatively add if you need SP help: Josh Johnson, Ian Kennedy, Hellickson, Tillman, Hughes

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

Josh Johnson. Still major upside. The others are scarier, if not as brittle. Kennedy is about to be suspended for awhile. What a mess that Dodgers-Diamondbacks game was. I think Tillman is probably safest option here though. Depends what level of help you need, upside vs. safety.

LittleRon needs Saves (WV)

Been following Morrison and looks like time to pick him up for 5x5. Would drop Swisher, Iglesias, or Frazier. Have Sandoval for 3B but on DL...suggestions please

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

I'd part with Iglesias, but not Swisher or Frazier for LoMo. Iglesias isn't close to this good offensively and shouldn't play much. Morrison is no lock to stay healthy or hit for power, so don't get too excited.

Kev (MA)

Matt Joyce or Marcell Ozuna?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

Joyce has power. Ozuna should develop his, but his batting average will fall. Joyce is a 20-homer guy now.

MARK NYC [via mobile]

Is appel getting called up this year and iif he is would it be good to pick him up and stash for a late run

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

It would be stunning and a big mistake if the Astros called him up. I see little chance.

JJ (MPLS)

EK - After a decent last week or so from Jennings would you be looking to sell or do you think he is starting to turn it around?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

He is what he appears to be, at least for now, a .250 hitter with 15-homer pop and 35-steal upside. I think his season can improve, but not really in batting average. I'd be buying.

todd (sf)

Help! I'm 1-9, and I'm actually trying! Would you package Castro and a Gio Gonzalez-type for Tulo?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Yeah, that seems wise. Castro is not nearly this bad, though, so he's a nice buy low. Tulo is obviously better and you should try to move starting pitching for bats, then get lucky with free agent pitching. But it might be too late. It's 10 weeks already!

Bill (CA)

Are you starting Travis Wood today vs Cincy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Yes. Start Travis all the time.

jon (New York)

whats Beachy's value in a keeper?

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

Clearly has upside, but I prefer hitters to arms in keeper formats to start with. Can't say Beachy would be close to my top 20 starting pitchers in a keeper anyway. Lot more reliable options out there.

Eric (Kansas City)

Will Myers be called up soon? (see what I did there). What kind of production would you expect if he is?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

I think it would have happened already if the Rays weren't hitting 4 home runs per night this week. He's a guy that can hit 5 homers per month on average, but his K rate ensures a lower batting average. I don't think Myers will win people leagues, but he should be owned in standard ones in case he's awesome. All these prospects are so overrated in relation to safer, veteran choices ... it never stops!

JJ (Boston)

How long do you think Panda is out? Is it a fracture or strain?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Doesn't seem to be more than a few weeks, so expect him back before July. It's a shame he doesn't really get himself into proper non-Panda shape because his hitting skills are terrific. Will probably never reach full upside. Still a 25-100-.300 guy if he wants to be.

Justin Upton (San Diego, CA)

What is a reasonable trade offer for me these days? Hopefully more than the Diamondbacks took for me!

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Upton owners were warned a month ago about this happening, and it did. I projected fewer than 30 homers for him even after he smacked 12 in April. Reasonable? Shoot high, but don't expect a top-20 return anymore.

BIlly (KC)

Hey Eric. Your thought on Ryu ROS? Thinking about trading Holliday for him since I need pitching. Thanks!!

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

That's rarely a wise strategy, even if you need pitching. Keep the hitting, they're more consistent and safe and try to find an arm elsewhere.

Nate (Woburn, MA)

ROS: Puig or McCutchen?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

That's pretty funny. Most fantasy owners think Puig is the top player in baseball, so go with that. I'll take McCutchen!

Travis (Maryland)

Who's the odd man out with Beachy coming back? Heard rumblings Medlen to the pen?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

I rumbled that in a blog a week ago. Haven't heard it elsewhere, but it sure makes sense because Teheran can't be bumped and it's ridiculous to think they'd trade Maholm or Hudson. So I'd say it's a poor time to trade for Medlen in fantasy. But all it takes is one injury to someone else - happens all the time - and he sticks in the rotation. So don't completely panic yet.

Jeremy (NJ)

What type of regression should we expect from Iwakuma? And what type of hitter would you ask for in return for him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

I think some of his numbers are a bit out of whack, but watching him pitch I don't see major regression. Could see an ERA over 3 the rest of the way, though.

Don (Rockaway Neach NY)

Just scooped up Zunino!! I am excited!! I figure my positive outlook will help him have a big remainder of the year in the bigs. Do you share the confidence??

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

He really wasn't hitting well at Tacoma, so no, I see this as a short-term promotion. Has some pop but other than that, I'd keep expectations in line.

Chris (Boston)

Expecting Strasburg to remain a top 5-10 option ROS when he returns?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

No, he's not among my top 10 starting pitchers at this point, in part due to strikeout rate but mainly durability. His numbers, frankly, are excellent, except the wins, which he does not control. Nats will be contenders. I'd say Stras just misses my top 10 now, but I'm not nearly as down on him - look at the stats! - as others.

Matt (MPLS)

Hurting in ERA and WHIP in a roto league. Is having a top notch middle reliever a good idea in this case?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Unloading the ERA/WHIP damage guys is a better start. Best way to help a bad average - batting average, ERA or WHIP - is unload the Adam Dunn types, unless in the case of a Hamels it's so obvious the good numbers are coming. A middle reliever is fine, but generally not enough innings to save an ERA if the damage is already done.

Jason (Denver)

Nava going to regress a great deal? Is he a top 30 OF?

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

No, he is not a top-30 OF. Not even close.

Jordan (Loveland)

Has Adam Dunn's new approach started to work and upped his average to go along with the power or is this just a small sample size?

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

I think we have a pretty good baseline on him at this point. But 40 homers not at all out of the question. A .240 batting average is.

Scott (Hou)

In regards to Medlen, would you drop him for Jansen, or do you think he can still hold enough value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

Jansen is a closer on a team that doesn't score a ton and he's a major K guy. Should be top-5 closer ROS. Medlen... not a top-40 starting pitcher and could be bumped to bullpen. Get Jansen.

Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)

This offere expires today....Kershaw, Seager and A Simmons for Wright, Segura and AJ Burnett... which side?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

I take Kershaw side and never look back.

Cobra Kai (left field)

Someone just dropped Cole Hamels. Should I drop Cobb for him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

Yes, of course.

Evan (Concord)

Tony the Tiger's ROS stats? Was he a one and done callup with Cueto returning?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

Yes, it's looking likely Cingrani is back in the minors today or tomorrow.

Poon (Provo, UT)

Any concern with Howard and his knee?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

More concerned that the Phillies would be better off if he just went on the DL. Which he prob won't.

John from nh [via mobile]

Should I sell high on Dom brown or stay put?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

By the definition of sell-high, yes, see what you can get. Still a good player, certainly emerging, but won't reach his pace in homers and prob not steals. But always depends on the return, the value.

Joe (NJ)

No one is talking about Derek Dietrich!! Is he a 20 homer guy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

I talked about him Monday! I think he can get there. I projected 16 homers.

Phil (Denver)

Is Bonnifacio ever going to start running? He's been a big disappointment....continue to hold in a deep 5x5?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

He might run, but I've long ago moved on from him.

Rick Porcello (Detroit)

Worth the add in 12-Team mixed? Great K potential, but ERA needs work.

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

I don't see great K potential, frankly. But there are positive signs.

Phil (Madison)

Yasmani Grandal or Russell Martin ROS? Does Grandal get much of a boost if it's a keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

I'd take the chance on Grandal, but catchers make for poor keepers, so that's not much of a factor. Martin potentially hitting .210 the rest of the way is.

Ryan (NY)

Does Cole stay up in majors?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Hope so. That was fun last night. But all pitchers like this are sell-high guys. Someone's always willing to overpay.

harry (seattle)

Eric--which of these notorious batting average killers would you roster: Dunn, Willingham, Alvarez (or none of them)?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

I think Willingham can hit .260. I like him best. Takes walks, proven guy in any ballpark. Then Alvarez. Hit 30 last year, will again. Dunn's batting average is just too much to bear, and his work over the past 10 days is not enough of a sample size.

Phil (New York)

Yonder Alonso is available for pick up. Drop Belt or Hosmer to stash him for 3 weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

No, there's nothing special about Alonso for fantasy. Keep Belt.

bob (WI)

Thoughts on Lester ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

Walking everyone the past few weeks. Certainly reason for concern. I'm not buying.

Mat (Toronto)

EK have to drop one... ROS wacha, wheeler, cole

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

Wheeler. Not a good Mets team, and they seem to alter their plan with him daily. Other guys pretty good, too.

Phil (DC)

What can we expect from Justin Mourneau ROS? He is on waivers in my league and my 1B now are Hosmer and Craig.

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

I'd still take Hosmer over Morneau. Craig isn't in this conversation.

Rated Rookie (Atlanta)

Harvey for Machado (keeper league with no limits on years-kept)?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Of course. Always the hitter, especially one this good.

Matthew (Connecticut)

Billy Hamilton have a fantasy impact this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

I say it's doubtful.

JB (CT)

Who's your pick at 3B ROS in OBP league? Seager, Donaldson, Lawrie

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

I'm all aboard the Donaldson train. Altered his approach, it's working. And I've had enough of Lawrie.

Chris (TX)

Follow up on Lester... someone dropped him in my league. Is he worth a pickup if I dump Dickey or Teheran?

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

Yeah, I'd take Lester over Dickey at this point.

Stephen (Los Angeles)

Do you think Puig gets suspended? Will that dust up increase the likelihood he gets sent back down?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

Part of the problem with Puig, and his owners don't wanna hear it, is that he's shown immaturity and been out of control. And then he showed this Tuesday night, throwing a punch. Hey, I'd be mad, too, but walk away. He has to be suspended. Only gets demoted if he stops hitting and all 3 Dodgers outfielders are healthy, which frankly doesn't look likely in June. Puig is good; people just love him way too much. Isn't walking, and last night was his first run scored via someone else. He will regress. They ALL do. Suspension shouldn't be a long one though.

Brian (Chicago)

Which catcher would you want ROS: Gattis, VMart, or Perez?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Gattis is awesome, but he's not the starter. So you're relying on him continuing to hit pinch hit homers, which is not likely. I'm no hater, I love the story and even have him in a league, but it's obvious: The others play more. I'd take the others.

mark (cleve)

Cobb for Austin Jackson (Keeper)?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Of course. Jackson is a top-20 outfielder. What is Cobb? We still don't know, but he's not a top-20 starter yet. Deal the pitching for bats, then find more pitching. Always.

Brint (Wichita)

Would you trade Puig for Kemp?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Absolutely.

Matt (Cleveland, OH)

Thoughts on Jeff Baker in Texas? He has been crushing lately.

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Excellent spot starter when a lefty is on the mound.

RSS (Detrua)

Tyler Colvin (2 hrs yesterday)...does he stick? Your prediction please

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

No. Predict he's demoted as soon as Cuddyer is healthy. Rox really don't seem to like Colvin much. Not my decision!

Brian (Chicago)

After reading your Puig answer I have a follow up question, would you rather trade Puig for Napoli then having to start VMart at Catcher?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

No, I'd hold him and see what occurs, especially since you have a decent catcher already and Napoli can't keep this RBI pace up anyway.

Hayden (Atlanta)

Is it smart to drop Dickey? He has been terrible all year.

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

He's not been terrible all year. He's had several excellent starts. But expect the inconsistency to continue. If you can add a better pitcher, sure, I move him, but he could easily be NOT terrible his next 2 outings.

Mike Minor (ATL)

Are you a believer? I've been outstanding since last July...

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

Yes. I am a believer now.

Sam (Houston)

Eric--it's fluky, but my I can't seem to score any wins, ranking way last in my league. Is there any way to address this, or just stay the course?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

No, because if you give up on the Hamels types that aren't winning, when they DO start winning you'll miss it. Can't predict wins. Might need to punt the category. Target good pitchers for ERA, WHIP and Ks, hope they win.

dan (Charleston, SC)

Wilin Rosario has been struggling mightily. I know he is streaky, but do you think he returns to being a top 5 C?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

Was never among my top 5, but remains in my top 10.

Mike (Chicago)

Pick up Blanks or Loney ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

I expect Loney to regress more, but Blanks hasn't shown he can hit for power consistently or keep a job. Maybin is done for a few months so he'll get a chance, but ... Loney seems batting average safe and could hit 10 homers.

Matt (MPLS)

Thoughts on Jose Fernandez ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

Clearly being handled/watched closely, so don't expect many September innings, if any. And don't expect many wins. It's a terrible team. But has a bright future.

Joe (CT)

Who would you rather have at 3B ROS Headley or Beltre?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

Would have said Beltre in March, and little has changed. Headley should get modestly better, but he won't reach Beltre territory.

Scott (NC)

Just offered Miley for Parker. I run away from this, yes?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

I'll take Parker. He's turned things around.

JJ (MPLS)

Would trading D Jennings to get J Hamilton be smart if you don't plan on keeping either?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Depends on the return. Can't imagine it's a good time to float Hamilton's name out there, but try it. First goal is to win now, worry about keepers later.

Ryu (Shoryuken U.)

Hey EK, Jhonny Peralta or Nick Franklin?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

Peralta is more proven for sure, though batting average regression is coming. Hard to tell on Franklin so far; I like the upside, but he's far from guaranteed.

jay (st louis)

thanks for taking so many questions EK (thats why your chats are the best). can you tell me about youk ROS? is he a top 15 3b? seems to have no trade value in my league

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

I wouldn't trade for him either, sorry to say. Can't predict any upside for health. Isn't hitting much, probably because he's hurt. Thanks!

Michael (Milwaukee)

All prospects are overrated, but aren't they valued more than veterans just on the chance you get a Trout or even a few weeks of a Puig?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Sure, I'd always drop my last bench guy to see if a new kid is amazing, but it's like 1 in 10 have that amazing rookie season. What Trout did had literally never happened before. Puig is very talented, but of course you sell high in a 2013 league when a guy has 4 homers in his first week.

Johnny (Folson Prison)

Does Jacob Turner rev your engine?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

No, I can't say that he does. Chocolate chip cookies.... the lure of my team in the World Series ... a Marlins pitcher, no.

Tony (Fort Worth, TX)

Thoughts on Anthony Rendon? I am looking to replace Scutaro and Maybin on my bench.

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

I'd keep Scutaro, unless he's out a long time. Maybin just drop. Rendon can hit, but I don't think he'll hit for power initially or more than .260 average, and he doesn't run. So it's nice he'll get 2B elig, but eh for a 10-teamer.

Wacha (St. Louis)

No way I'm getting demoted after I held my own after a rocky 1st inning....right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

Never say no way. Reds demoted Cingrani. Wacha is hardly safe when Westbrook returns. Sorry.

john (nyc)

you are the most level-headed, common-sense-practicing fantasy expert out there. keep up the great work.

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

I knew my Dad was in these chats! Happy Father's Day!

Dave (Raleigh)

When does Bundy pitch for Balt? April, June, Sept???

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Perhaps Sept. I wouldn't wait.

Evan (Concord)

Once Coghlan comes back, Ruggiano getting any starts?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

He's not returning anytime soon, and Ruggiano had his chance to stay on 20/20 course. Miami outfield is Pierre/Ozuna/Stanton, and Pierre is bumped soon for Marisnick or Yelich.

Dave (NY)

Do you think Brandon Beachy would be better than Homer Bailey ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

No, I do not. Bailey's xFIP shows a really good buy low guy.

Jason (Gaithersburg, MD)

Hi EK, Anthony Rendon....where would you rank him once he gains 2B eligibility, amongst 2nd Baseman? I traded Chase Utley earlier this season and have been playing match ups since. Worst positional depth I can recall.

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Outside my top 10 for sure on Rendon. Eventually will hit for power, and he does have plate discipline, but doesn't look ready yet to me. I think Espinosa replaces him soon.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Gausman going to make an impact this year still or is he not ready?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

I don't think he's ready yet.

Brian (NY)

I don't know if you can blame Puig for immaturity last night when Mattingly and McGwire were in the fray.

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

They all looked pretty foolish. But I didn't see the coaches throw a wild punch. The 22-year-old did. Doesn't matter if we think it was warranted. He cannot do that and avoid suspension.

Brian (Philly)

Which side in a vacuum, Pujols or Gardner/Trumbo?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Not a bad deal to get out from Pujols, frankly. I no longer have high hopes for Albert in 2013, though he's the best option in this deal.

Bryan (California)

Brian Roberts is 3 or 4 weeks out. He seems like he's be great in that line up- right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

Having good hitters around you, and a good manager, does not keep a brittle player healthy. I wish it wasn't so, but how can anyone project he plays every day anymore?

Josh Donaldson (Oakland)

What are some reasonable numbers I can put up?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

Gonna hit .300 with 22 homers and close to 100 RBI. I know, it's stunning, but it's all legit.

Trey Anastasio (Burlington, VT)

Can we get any sense as to if Profar is gonna stay up when Kinsler/Morelan come back? Would you keep him over Franklin?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I would keep Profar over Franklin, but the writing remains on the wall: There's no room in the lineup for Profar. Not my call, but Texas is not likely to move anyone to left field in June that hasn't played there before. I think it's possible Berkman is playing hurt and when Moreland returns that could help Profar though.

Tony Cingrani (Cincy)

Would you hold onto until demotion, or dump now?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

Hold just in case. Could start this weekend. But Reds haven't been lying to anyone. He is clearly odd man out when Cueto returns.

Rick (Atlanta)

Is Beachy a "MUST ADD" as a Medlen owner?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

I don't think it matters who owns Medlen. He's a good stash because he's good. This isn't a handcuff situation. And for those that commented in my Braves rotation blog last week that they should go 6-man rotation, I didn't mention it because there is literally no chance it happens. NO team does it. No team will do it.

Tom (Chicago)

Dumped Lawrie for David Price, good move?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Yes.

Chuck (Marlton)

Liriano, are you a believer?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Cautiously. Very cautious.

Julie (Boston)

Does Berkman have any value in a 12 team 5x5?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Barely. Just looks like he's hurt again and can't hit the pitches he usually does.

David Freese (Under the Arch)

Do you see me returning to form? 20 game hit streak and many RBI opportunities in this lineup. Comparable to Donaldson ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Definitely. Another example of a guy that wasn't healthy. Honestly, HALF these guys play through injury half the time... Freese is clearly healthy now.

Bryan (California)

Speaking of Price- when he returns, will he be his old self again?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

One would think the Rays would only bring him back if that was the case.

Michael Pineda (NY)

I am ready to help out teams in july, august and september. What do you think?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Prob wishful thinking, but worth a stash I suppose. I'd like to see if Phelps can keep pitching well.

Stephen (Los Angeles)

So wait, does that mean you are still expecting Trumbo to fall off the table in the second half again?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Not fall off the table, but regress some. And there's obv risk he can regress a lot, since he's proven that. But Pujolos is obv not Pujols anymore.

Danny (Rochester)

In a vacuum: Dom Brown/A Gonzalez for Goldschmidt/Cain. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Goldschmidt/Cain

mendel (Louisville)

quickly, would you trade bourn and cc for braun?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Yes

Keeper Question (Missouri)

Give Waino or Harvey up for Machado? I'm thinkin Harvey, Machado and Profar would be my 3 keepers next season.

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

Yeah, I would.

Trey Anastasio (Burlington, VT)

Thanks for taking my question EK! I have Vmart starting at catcher but Miguel Montero sitting out the as a FA, would you make that switch?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

No, I've lost more patience with Montero.

Sal (FL)

Is trading Harvey to get Beltre a wise move?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

Always.

Gary (N.H.)

You said earlier no fantasy impact by Billy Hamilton this year. Are you not expecting a call up any time soon or just think he doesn't hit? Projected numbers? Expectations?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

Gets call to pinch run in September. That's all.

Wil Myers (TB)

How much longer EK!

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

One week until Myers is promoted and I get to write my "all prospects are overrated" blog yet again. Hey, I'm honest if anything.

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Well, that was fun, hope you enjoyed it as well. Our hour is indeed up, and I thank you all for your time and interest and wish you best of luck in your leagues. Oh, and have a great week! Adios!
