Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:02 PM)

Let's talk about the AFC East.

Christian (Springfield, MO) [via mobile]

Who's going to start in Buffalo at QB? Manuel/Spiller/Johnson could be dynamic.

James Walker
  (4:04 PM)

The competition is just getting started, Christian. So it's too early to say anything for certain. But if the season started today, it would be veteran QB Kevin Kolb. His experience carried him through OTAs and minicamp as the early leader. EJ Manuel has a lot of tools, but he still has a long way to go. It will be interesting to see if Manuel can make up ground between now and September.

chris (kentucky) [via mobile]

James, do you see the dolphins having a top five d this year?

James Walker
  (4:06 PM)

Not top five, Chris. I think the pass defense needs to make dramatic improvement for that to happen. Miami was 27th against the pass last season. I do think the Dolphins will be better overall than last year. I like the additions of Ellerbe, Wheeler, Grimes and No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan. The Dolphins finally have some playmakers who can make a difference in the fourth quarter. The goal should be top 10.

Ed (Queens Village)

I ask a couple weeks ago about the top players in division. Check out your piece from February. Would there be a preseason "Walker Fab 40" or would have to wait till end of regular season or playoffs for list?

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

Interesting question, Ed. I've been doing it for four years in the AFC East and AFC North blogs. And I always debate with myself when is the best time. The reason I do it in February is because it is immediately after the season, I've watched them all year in person, and these players are fresh in my mind. I feel it's easier for me to rank than to wait six or seven months after they last played. But I understand doing it in the preseason as well. Maybe I will consider it.

Matthew (Buffalo, NY)

Who do you see winning the #2 WR job in Buffalo; Robert Woods, Da'Rick Rogers, TJ Graham, etc?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

I would be surprised if Robert Woods isn't the starting WR in Buffalo in Week 1, Matthew. I am hearing nothing but good things about his development and that you wouldn't even know he's a rookie with the way he goes about his business. Injuries could happen to change things. But right now Woods is on track to start.

Xander (Philly)

Do you think Marrone has the potential to field and innovative and explosive offense?

James Walker
  (4:14 PM)

Good questions this week. There is a reason I do not write much about rookie head coaches and their ability to be successful. They must prove it to me first. I didn't write much about Joe Philbin last offseason because I wanted to see his concepts, schemes and game management. Also, I wanted to know how he handles players. Now I have a feel for it and I can formulate how I feel he can do as a head coach. This year is the same for Marrone. He could be great or he could be awful. But Marrone has a clean slate until I see him in game situations throughout the year.

Keanu (Honolulu)

James, how has Daniel Thomas been looking? I've heard that he has been outplayed by Lamar Miller and Gillislee.

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

Thomas has been ok, but not great. I noticed Miami is trying to use him and other RBs in the passing game more with mixed results. Miller has been the most impressive. Gillislee is the kind of RB I want to see in pads, because his physical style is his strength. It's kind of hard to tell what he brings in shorts. I need to see more from this group in training camp.

Candy (Slippery Rock)

Hello James, how do you think Dustin Keller will do this year and do you think that Egnew or Sims will play a decent amount as well?

James Walker
  (4:21 PM)

Ryan Tannehill actually has good early chemistry with Dustin Keller this offseason. The two have worked well together in OTAs before Keller got banged up and missed minicamp. There is some truth to the saying that a TE is a QB's best friend, because you can tell Tannehill is happy to find someone reliable over the middle. Michael Egnew has really impressed me this spring/summer. I don't know if it's because he was so lost last year. So just making a few plays stands out for him. Or because he is really making a jump in Year 2. But he is a big target and moves well. Sims has been about what you expect. A big guy.

james (ct)

Heat or spurs ?

james (ct)

heat or spurs

James Walker
  (4:23 PM)

Spurs have two chances so that's the safer pick.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

James - if Rex Ryan can field a top 10 D would that give the Jets a chance to be competitive this season?

James Walker
  (4:26 PM)

Rex Ryan has a reputation for fielding top-10 defenses. So you can never count NY's defense out. But the Jets are lacking so much talent in so many areas that I don't think it matters. Even if the defense plays well, like it did last year, NY will still finish with a losing record.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Jim, Who'll get the # 1 Draft Pick in 2014 the New York Jets or the Oakland Raiders? And Rex Ryan will be fired as head coach if the go 0 - ????

James Walker
  (4:29 PM)

I'm surprised with the amount of Jets fans who already wrote off the season. Yes, this is a rebuilding year. But that doesn't mean 0-16. The Jets may be last year's Dolphins, who were 7-9 while rebuilding and very competitive most weeks. Enjoy the journey and stop looking two seasons ahead.

Matt (Augusta)

Clowney is going to look terrific in a Bills uniform in 2014-15 and beyond.

James Walker
  (4:30 PM)

You think the Bills will be the worst team in the league? Interesting prediction.

JB (MD) [via mobile]

Do you see the Dolphins running many 2 TE sets? Keller and Egnew/Sims on the field together?

James Walker
  (4:32 PM)

I don't envision the Dolphins running a lot of 2 TEs. From what I've seen, they've gone more three WRs to fit their strength and depth with Wallace, Hartline and Brandon Gibson. But there will be times when two TEs are needed, which is why Egnew or Sims must step up as a No. 2 option.

James Walker
  (4:33 PM)

By the way, I forgot to mention this: As much as Egnew has looked improved making plays as a receiving TE, his run blocking still looks pretty bad. That's important if you're a No. 2 TE.

Xanni (Miami)

How's the left side of Miami's o line looking? Has it changed your opinion on bypassing a LT for Dion?

James Walker
  (4:35 PM)

It all comes down to LT Jonathan Martin. I like the fact that he's bulked up. You can see he put work in the weight room with bigger arms and shoulders. However, I'm still not sure he can handle the opponent's best pass-rushers. He was dominated in some games at LT last year. Martin needs to play a lot better for 16 games this season.

Brett (rochester) [via mobile]

where do you see buffalo finishing the season in terms of rushing yards? top 5? marrone is an ex o-lineman who might look to pound the rock

James Walker
  (4:38 PM)

I really like C.J. Spiller. I still don't understand how Chan Gailey left him on the bench for so long or gave him five carries a game, at times. But I expect defenses to crowd the line of scrimmage on Buffalo. The goal will be to stop Spiller first and see if Kevin Kolb or EJ Manuel can beat them through the air. Spiller's success or finishing in the top 5 could come down to Buffalo's ability to keep defenses honest.

Phillip (Boston)

I know they have Brady but how are the Pats going to outscore teams like they usually have done in the past? It's pretty bare after an injured Gronk and Hernandez.

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

That's the major question in Boston, and that's why I predict New England will take a step back offensively in 2013. The Patriots were No. 1 in total offense last year. They really have nowhere to go but backwards. If Gronkowski, Hernandez and Danny Amendola all stay healthy for 16 games, the Patriots could still do damage. But what are the chances all three players stay injury free, when they haven't done that for most of their careers?

Chino [via mobile]

Will dion jordan be a force under the humble cameron wake

James Walker
  (4:47 PM)

Dion Jordan has been mostly a mystery in Miami since he's coming off shoulder surgery and couldn't attend practices due to the quarters system at the University of Oregon. Miami's coaching staff hasn't really gotten their hands on Jordan, so it's hard to determine what his role will be. At the very least, I think he will be a pass-rusher off the bench. It looks like Jared Odrick is moving inside to DT and Jordan will be in a rotation with Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon.

Brett (rochester) [via mobile]

what camp battles are you most looking forward to seeing (besides bills and jets quarterback battles)?

James Walker
  (4:50 PM)

I want to see how New England's WRs shake out after Danny Amendola. The same goes in Buffalo. That's two key position battles to watch. Also, the kicking situations in Miami and Buffalo. Both teams have hot-shot rookies looking to supplant veterans. Fans don't care about kickers until they lose a couple games for your team. But this summer is the time to pay attention.

Steve Panama City [via mobile]

Are the dolphins done in free agency?

James Walker
  (4:52 PM)

Miami has interest in Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach. He met with the team last week. But he has interest from multiple teams.

Jon Avenel NJ [via mobile]

JAMES, if all things fall into place, do my beloved bills have a chance to finally break this playoff drought that I've had to experience??

James Walker
  (4:55 PM)

I think if everything fell into play for most teams, that would equal playoffs. But I don't see Buffalo making it this year. The QB (Manuel or Kolb) would really need to play lights out this year and that probably won't happen. But the Bills have enough talent to be competitive.

Matt (Augusta)

With the rookie salaries lower, shouldn't it be expected that marquee free agents will become fewer as teams should have more money to re-sign them?

James Walker
  (4:59 PM)

When the NFL agreed to a rookie wage scale in the latest CBA, I knew that would be bad news for players. It's not in the NFL culture to pay a lot of 30-year-old players huge contracts. So if they're not required to pay the 21-23 year olds, where is that money going? The second-contract guys in the 26-28 range get huge contracts but that's about it. The NFL is a cruel business and that was definitely a win for the owners.
