Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:01 AM)

Hello to all and welcome to the latest ESPN Fantasy chat session! I am Eric, I thank you for showing up (or reading the wrap later!) and let's use our one hour of Q&A productively! Here we go!

Tom (Washington)

Ill start it off for you, Do you think Dickey turns it around?

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

I think he's hampered by a neck injury and he'll continue to be inconsistent from outing to outing. Is it possible he gets on a great run like last season, yes. I'd say he remains inconsistent though. Hard to predict the next Dickey or Kris Medlen run.

Matt (FL)

Would you consider throwing Tillman out there against the Tigers today? He's been hot, day game after a night game, etc...

Eric Karabell
  (11:03 AM)

No, that's the one offense (or Rockies at Coors) I'd stay away from, and while Tillman is off to a nice start, I'm not sure I really believe it yet.

Brandon (Cincinnati)

What do you think about Anthony Rendon? Double eligibility and has been hitting better than Profar.

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

Certainly Rendon can hit, and from what I have seen he's capable at second base. Not like it's a lock Espinosa will unseat him soon. I still like Profar better because he runs and appears to be getting much time at the top of a better lineup.

Frank (New Jersey)

EK, how is EY going to fare as a Met?

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

I've been burned by Eric Young enough to know he's probably going to disappoint for the Mets as well, but could he steal 25 bases the rest of the season? Of course he can. Can't recall last time a Rockies hitter left town and upped his value, but that's probably the case here. I'll say .260 with no power but 20 steals (at best).

Paul (Brew City)

IT'S ANCHORMAN NOT ANCHORLADY! AND THAT IS A SCIENTIFIC FACT!Back to fantasy, where do you rank Kenley Jansen ROS among relievers now that he has the job?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

I'd say top 10 for sure, but probably not top 5 yet. Still some doubt, it's a losing team and the Dodgers are so nuts they might go back to League when he figures things out.

Brandon (Cincinnati)

Good idea to trade for Medlen and/or Teheran in a dynasy league? I'm in competitive rebuilding mode.

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Both, really. But one of them likely leaving rotation in a week when Beachy is ready. I still have doubts Medlen does anything close to what he did last year again. Not even sure his long-term role is starter for them.

Ike (PA)

Assuming the Mets will trade Buck, does D'Arnaud have alot of value in the 2nd half?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Wouldn't call Travis a top-10 catcher though. Depends how deep the league, but in 10-teamers, don't bother. D'Arnaud and Zunino could be very good, but there are easily 15 more productive catchers out there.

Henry Rowengartner (Chicago)

Are you buying low on Hamels? if he was in the texas rotation during Yu's starts, he would have 7-8 wins most likely.

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

Hamels is fine. This is just bad luck. Could easily win 10 of next 15 outings the way he's looked. Definitely buy low.

EJ (Charlotte)

R.Oswalt a decent streamer add in NL only daily?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

I'm going nowhere near Oswalt and am surprised people are so interested. For one, look at his numbers not only in 2012, but 2011. Nothing special. And now he's at Coors. No way for me.

Manny (Houston)

does JJ Putz take over as closer once he comes off the DL?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

I'd say immediately the way Heath Bell has pitched.

Patrick (Chicago)

Hi EK, Thinking of trading Braun away. Looking to get a SP...what caliber SP should I expect to get for him now with all things considered?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

Braun was the No. 1 pick in a lot of leagues, so if you move him, you'd better get a top-10 guy, still. Or a top-20 pitcher and bat back. Don't sell low. Numbers are still fine and he'll be off DL in a week. I'm buying, frankly. Suspensions? Please.

Brian (NY)

Do you think Miguel Sano sees the majors this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

Just got to Double-A, so I'd say perhaps a September look, but nothing more. He's not jumping to majors in June.

Dan (MA)

Reyes... Comes back running or just strolling?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Running. He can see the Jays are back in the race and he's got his contract set, so I bet he goes all out and steals bases.

Gary (CT)

Hey Eric, what pitcher do you see as the better option ROS. Homer or Matt Moore?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Like 'em both, but it's still Moore. Though I'm having doubts. Bailey's underlying numbers say we need to still buy low.

Sprout (Brussels)

Is Homer Bailey matchup proof at this point? If not, are you starting him against Pittsburgh tomorrow?

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

Against Pittsburgh? I'd start just about anyone. Bailey owns that team. But yeah, I'd start Bailey anywhere now. All the Reds pitchers, really.

Dan (MA)

Thoughts on Wheeler's command?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

Not worried yet, frankly. First outing. And the walks were early in the game. He improved and his stuff is just terrific.

Chris (South Carolina)

Keep or trade Wheeler and/or Cole this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

Both are probably worth more on the trade market than they are to a fantasy team. Rookies always get overrated. See what you can get. Homer Bailey plus a bat? Hey, people do that!

Tom (Calif)

Willingham or Hosmer ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

Willingham can still hit 30 home runs with his experience and walk rate. I don't see Hosmer hitting 15. He's at 2. Pathetic, really.

Steve (NYC)

Thoughts on Alex Cobb? Keep and hope for the best with concussion fallout, or drop and add Wheeler?

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

I'm keeping Cobb. Give him 2 weeks. Wheeler is no guarantee whatsoever.

John (Lackey)

Whats my line against Detroit in your opinion?

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

Unsettling.

Dan (MA)

Does Utley come back with the same hitting he had earlier this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

Absolutely. Until he gets hurt again.

Billy (KC)

Who's the better buy low? Jered Weaver or Zach Greinke?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

Surprising myself here, but Weaver. Something's amiss with Greinke. Something's always a bit amiss with him, sadly.

Chris (Boston)

Any insight on Mike Carp? Is he going to get regular playing time ROS? I assume he isn't going to keep up the .324 BA, but is he a better option than, say, Brandon Belt?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

I'll take Belt, but Carp is a legit hitter and he does have a path to keep playing. I don't see the Red Sox needing to upgrade the league's best offense.

Todd (Chicago)

Is trading Anibal Sanchez for Homer Bailey buying low at this point? Concerned about his shoulder...

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

I hope I am wrong, but I can't sell Sanchez fast enough. I think the Tigers know his shoulder is meatloaf and he's not back in 2 weeks. Yes, sell.

Rick (Amish Country)

Does Betancourt regain the closer's role or do the Rockies keep Brothers in that role?

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

I think Putz and Betancourt go right back into closing immediately. Brothers is fine, but he's a walker, and he's their setup man.

Peter (Pittsburgh)

If forced to drop one (non-keeper league), would it be Rutledge or Profar? Or are you doing anything you can to hold on to both? 12-team mixed league.

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

That's a good question. I'm keeping Rutledge, though he's not a better player. More playing time, he's a nice power/speed combo, home ballpark, etc.

Manny (Houston)

is it time to take Jason Castro seriously? Would you drop McCann?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

Definitely take seriously, but not quite over McCann at this point.

Michael (Born)

What is the new date on Beachy's return?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

Braves are buying time. Word is they want to trade Maholm, so today's outing is key. I doubt they make a trade. I'll say Beachy next week, Medlen to bullpen.

Tom (Calif)

Price and a throw in hitter for Chris Davis a fair trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

Beauty always in eye of beholder. I'd consider it if I needed an arm, but Davis is totally legit. This guy is gonna lead the majors in home runs and hit .300. It's real.

Mike (Minneapolis)

Which Padre pitcher is more rosterable: Cashner or Stults?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

I don't believe in Stults, really. I'd take Cashner.

Josh (MD)

Dom Brown Eric! Is he coming back down to earth?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Sure is. Stopped hitting those 330-foot fly balls. Fanned with bases loaded no outs last night, then whiffed after the Ryan Howard leadoff and stand-up triple. Maybe he was in shock. But the swing is already off track and you gotta sell. Amazing how fast things change.

dan (charleston, sc)

EK! Josh Hamilton, Daniel Nava, Starling Marte, or CHOO, which three are you starting today?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Yikes. Trick question. And unbelievably the right one to sit is Josh. Though I personally would not sit him because I am stubborn. I'd sit Nava. This can't keep going with him.

Chris (NJ)

Esmil Rogers worth a roster spot in a 12-teamer?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Closing in. If you have a spot, sure. He's not a K guy, but it's a Medlen-like streak for a month.

Josh (City of Angels)

I cant really be this bad can I? There has to be a hot streak right? If I am offered straight up for Machado do I make the move?

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

Three double plays in the first 5 innings last night. All with Trout on first base. Hamilton is literally hurting Trout's ability to score runs and I don't like it! Hamilton is obviously talented, but I don't see any reason to buy low still. He could hit 25 homers and bat .240, so it gets modestly better, but I'm just staying away. Yeah, I'd take Machado in a minute.

Matt (CA)

Valverde done as DET Closer? Are his ratios even worth the occasional save? Drop him for Capps?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

His ratios are irrelevant. It's all about what Leyland wants. I think Valverde gets more chances to close against right-handed hitters. Just stop allowing home runs!

justin (work)

Who is more valuable ROS....Puig, Profar, Machado and what would you be looking to get for one of these young studs. I have all three but have multiple trade offers in a keeper league where you keep 10

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

Machado is easily the best and most proven guy here. Puig has been up 3 weeks. I would keep Machado and try to move the others while perception on Puig is that he's a top-10 guy (he's not) and Profar can't hit (he can). Get a top pitcher.

fantasy guru (in orbit)

yes josh from LA you make that deal! hey EK, do you like Braun or Justin Upton ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

I like Braun. Back in a week and he'll hit and run. Upton looks awful since May.

Matt (Nashville)

True or False. Max Scherzer finishes the season as a top 5 Fantasy Pitcher.

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

False. Unless he wins 25 games, which is unlikely.

Tyler (Richboro) [via mobile]

Are you buying or selling Matt Carpenter? How high would you aim in a trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

He's legit. Buying still but if someone offers you something crazy, I'd trade just about anyone. Carpenter can hit .300 and score 100 runs, maybe 10 homers.

Stan the Man (Iowa)

All the other fantasy experts are telling me to be patient with Billy Butler in KC, do you believe the same? Would you trade him for M. CUddyer or A. Craig?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

"Be patient." But I would move him for Craig.

Joe (NH)

Hey EK, please rank the following 2B's ROS. Utley, Altuve, Seager.

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

Altuve is first, then ... Seager. Utley third. Can't count on health or speed.

Philly Matt (SW Philly)

Hey EK, we gonna unload Coburn and the #11 for Bernier?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

I'm all for it. Love the Stanley Cup playoffs, sad my team missed it. Fix this, Homer.

Manny (Houston)

Morrow reportedly suffered a setback during his rehab start. Is he still worth holding on to in a 14-team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Yes he did, and yes. But I doubt we see him soon.

Bill (Ohio)

Just traded Puig/Jose Fernandez/Morse for Big Papi/Hamels/Werth. Pretty good sell high on Puig/Fernandez?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

Amazing deal. Good for you.

Barry (San Francisco)

Erik, would you drop Jed Lowrie for Nick Franklin?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Yeah, I'm ready to do that.

Evan (Iowa)

Too early to start thinking about Michael Pineda?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Not a bad DL stash, though my expectations are well in check.

Chris (Perez)

Will I regain the closers gig when I return....and stop giving up the long ball??

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

After last night's nightmare rehab outing (5 hits, 3 HR in 1 inning) I have doubts. I'd keep Pestano owned, but not trade for him. When Perez is healthy, he closes. Two weeks?

Nate (Woburn, MA)

Someone just dropped Gattis, have Molina as my C already. Is Gattis worth it as an OF?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

He has 2 hits in June. No. Good story, but this was obvious.

Dan (Concord, NH)

Deep AL Only. Will H.Nakajima ever show up for the As? What did they pay for this guy? ESPN (and I) had him pegged for 400+ ABs this year. Any chance we see this guy???

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Sorry, but I don't trust him one bit. Track record on Japanese middle infielders over here is not good.

Jeff (Portland, ME)

Who are you more impressed with J.Lyles or C.Kluber? Are they both legit?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Lyles more legit, and this notion he can't win games because of his team is incorrect.

Your Typing Teacher (Proud of your WPM)

Impeccable rate, EK! Our 16-team dynasty league is in year 3. Unfortunate scoring system awards 15 points for a win. Suggestions to change to QS or increase points for IP have not been well received. Ideas?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

Wins is a terrible category, really. Quality starts is better, but still flawed. Innings rewards the durable folks. I like QS the best here.

Panda Zoo [via mobile]

Just traded the recently atrocious zack grienkie for Bartolo Colon. Was I too impatient with grienkie?

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

Um, yeah. That was a mistake.

Erik (Savannah, GA)

EY or Juan Pierre. Steals is the biggest need, obviously, but BA matters too

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

Pierre. I've seen enough of Young to know I've seen enough, or something like that. But he can steal 20. He's really not that good.

Francis (LA)

You buying Oswalt's great rehab numbers carrying over into the majors?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Nope. And I am an upbeat person.

Brett (Los angeles) [via mobile]

Hey EK, who will be better ROS, Jose Reyes or Jean Segura?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Good one! I will go with Segura. Wow, I surprise myself. He's going to keep running, at the least, and I don't see high risk of injury. With Jose, well, buy low but be realistic on health.

Rick Vaughn (1989)

Stanton or Don Brown ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

You're kidding, right? Giancarlo.

ALF (Melmac)

Billy Hamilton coming up this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

See you in September.

Mr. Pappageorgio (PA)

Can Kelly Johnson produce enough to warrant starting for ROS or do you think it's time to upgrade that position while he still has value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

I think he could hit 30 home runs, but the batting average has to drop. Interested to see if the Rays use him less now that an outfield spot is filled with Myers. Basically leaves him and Joyce and Scott in LF and DH.

Shiv (Jail)

Has Jarrod Parker turned it around?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

He did about a month ago.

Yanni (Linden)

Keeper league, I was offered Stasburg for Harvey, what should I do?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

I'd take Harvey now.

Ricardo (El Paso)

I'm on the fence and its a 1pm start... Porcello today against BAL?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

Not ideal, but I'd use him over Tillman.

Hanley (LA)

Thoughts on me rest of year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Losing patience. Could see power but not speed or motivation.

Anthony (Cali)

In an OBP league, would you rather have Werth or Blanks as your 4th OF?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Werth still. Can't rely on Blanks hitting enough to keep a job, though there is more upside with him.

Johnny (Mars, PA)

Hey EK, please rank these starters ROS: Holland, Stults, Hudson.

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

Holland I still trust. Then Hudson. Sorry, Stults.

Merlin (OK)

Start Jeff Locke today?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

Sure while he's hot. I watch him and can't believe the numbers, but they're in the bank!

Mike Morse (SEA)

Should I give up the dream of 30 HR this season since I can't stay healthy? Owner getting impatient....

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

I'd say he can still go it. Has been hitting well of late, but yeah, not looking like he plays in more than 130 games.

Bobby Parnell (Turner Field bullpen)

Am I getting traded to a good team soon? My fantasy ranking is much lower than it should be.

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

I don't see the Mets moving him. They probably think a "closer" is important and a big part of their future (which is ridiculous, but whatever). Anyway, he's a Met.

Rick (MA)

Are you starting Moore against BOS tomorrow or benching him to evaluate further?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Reluctantly starting, but concerned.

Carlos Santana (Cleveland)

Am I the most reliable C in fantasy now?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

Not over Buster, Yadi or Mauer, but close. I knew the batting average would rise because of the walks, but I don't know about .285 all year.

Brian (Minneapolis)

Does Moreland resume his full time first base gig when he comes off the DL on Friday?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Yes he does.

Brian (NY)

Think Harper's back in 2 weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

I do. Buy low.

Craig Rohloff (frustratedtown)

Michael Bourn, steals are down, offers little else lately. Be patient or find a replacement

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Move him while his name value is far higher than his actual numbers. This is not a 40-steal guy anymore. People think he is.

Tom NJ [via mobile]

You continually mention that Profar runs. He has zero SB?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

He's fast enough to run, but isn't doing so. Don't know why. Maybe he's like Leonys Martin, who didn't run in April but has since.

Rebeka (Canada)

Are you as intrigued about Seattle's Erasmo Ramirez as I am? His numbers are looking good. Any place for him in a 10 team h2h keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

I am intrigued, but the Mariners have to make room for him. Erasmo was on sleeper lists I saw this year, but again, opportunity...

Alex (tacoma)

Is Aramis Ramirez droppable? Seems like he sits every other game.

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

No, keep him. Excellent, reliable hitter. If the occasional day off means he's more productive - often the case with older vets - then I'm all for it.

Barry (Long Island)

Thoughts on trading Wieters to get McCann?

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

I wouldn't do that.

Keeper league (MO)

10 tm, can keep only 3. I know keeping pitchers isn't the norm but Profar $5, Harvey $7 and Wheeler or Cole at $5 too good to pass up?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

I'd keep Harvey and Profar for sure, then Wheeler. Cole is a bit overrated.

leif (NJ)

do you think jose alverez is worth a spot start tom?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

I do. I'm using him that way in a league.

Josh (Chicago)

Why didn't Wil Myers hit 3 homers yesterday? What a disappointment! I kid! They brought him up to play everyday from here on out right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

They did, and I expect roughly .260 and 15 homers. What I love about fickle fantasy owners... Myers gets added in all leagues and in 2 weeks if he's hitting .220 he gets mass dropped. Like Profar was. Amazing!

Alvaro (Guatemala)

Ryan Howard has been heating up the last couple of weeks. As an expert and Phillies fan, what do you expect from him ROS ? Is the knee a big concern ?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I am not buying low on him. He's not healthy. He's not productive. This will not end well.

Andy (Portland)

Would you trade Jay Bruce & Homer Bailey for Kershaw? (in a bubble)

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Yes I would.

James (NY)

Wilhelmson is on a time-out. Perez gets first crack, does well and then comes in for the 7th yeterday. Any ideas...desperate for saves

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

Wilhelmsen is their guy in a few days. It was Perez for one game against lefty hitters and Capps has been bad.

Erik (Netherlands)

Eric Young Jr. worth an add for SB or will his lowly average contiue to hurt...badly?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Will run, but if his batting average was XXX for the Rockies at Coors, what do you think happens at Citi Field?

Pat (Evanston)

Sold high on Mark Reynolds for Everth Cabrera a few weeks ago and lovin' the production. Do we know anything about the extent of Cabrera's injury?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

I still expect a DL stint, unfortunately.

Justin Verlander (Detroit)

Not overreacting, but I don't look the same. Maybe more a top 20 pitcher this year instead of top 5?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Looks tired to me. I'd say top 10 still.

Chris (Charlotte)

"the way Heath Bell has pitched"? Please explain. You saw how Putz pitched, right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Bell has allowed home runs in three consecutive outings. A healthy Putz is obviously superior.

Brandon (Cincinnati)

Keeper league, I have Kaepernick and Brees. Is it crazy to trade Brees? How many more years of elite production do you think he has left?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Should move one of them. Brees can do this for 4 more years though so don't run because of his age. I'd move Kaep while his name value is through the roof.

Dan (Zona)

Should I deal Ellsbury for Braun in a keeper league? How about Ellsbury for Harper?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

I'd deal Ellsbury for either one in a heartbeat.

Mike (San Diego)

How dumb are the Rangers for putting Profar in left? His bat isn't special enough to play at any position.

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

His bat is better than this, and right now it's still better than Murphy. Don't judge on what he's done in the bigs. of course he SHOULD play short or second, but that's not an option. Rangers aren't dumb; they could still trade him. I'd trade Andrus.

Dan (Seattle-ish)

ESPN player news. Everth to be placed on DL

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

As expected. Pedro Ciriaco time! Cheap speed...

James (DC)

Any reason not to expect the usual second half surge from LaRoche?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

I'd buy low, yes.

Todd (Nashville)

Ciriaco or Scutaro to replace Everth?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

If you need speed, it's not Scutaro.

Barry (San Francisco)

Simmons has stolen 3 bases this week. Is this part of a trend? Would you drop Aybar or A. Escobar for him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

I'd go for Simmons. I expected roughly 15-18 steals from him, with 10-12 home runs. Still do.

BJ Upton (Atlanta)

I'm a lost cause, but will my little bro bounce back?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

You're not a lost cause. Just take the occasional pitch.

Norman (NY)

Was offered Braun for Adam Jones. Should I accept or is Jones close enough that it's not worth the risks involved?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

In THIS case, Jones is the smarter option.

me (somewhere)

profar has a 25% line drive rate. the BA will go up

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Yep. People are just too reactive...

Eric Karabell
  (12:01 PM)

Well, I see our hour is indeed up, so I thank you so much for your time and hope I got to your question. Best of luck in your leagues, and don't forget about the amazing NHL and NBA finals as well! What a week! Anyway, thanks and have a great day!
