Greetings, Jets fans. Thanks for stopping by for a Thursday chat. I'm fired up this week, so let's get after it.
Who do you think starts at safety opposite Landry?
It'll probably be Josh Bush, maybe by default. He's basically a CB playing safety. He'll be vulnerable vs the run when asked to play in the box.
Odds that Geno is opening day starter and which WR will benefit the most
I'd say it's 10 to 1 that Geno starts week 1. I'd say Hill would benefit the most because Smith has a stronger arm than Sanchez and could hit some vertical routes that Sanchez can't. Of course, that's assuming Hill catches the ball.
Hey Rich, Did anyone ask Santonio Holmes why or how did he fumble the ball when he down untouched with his foot injury?
No, Joe, that question wasn't asked. Knowing Tone's sparkling personality, I'm sure he would've embraced that question.
Rich, I think with Graves' Cards background E Doucet could be a possible WR they pick up. Thoughts?
Good question, Ira. Yes, it's a possibility. He's a competent professional WR. Had a decent year in 2011, not much production last year -- but the Ari QB situation was such a disaster that it's hard to fault the WRs.
Rich, I appreciated your post on the late, great James Gandolfini. How much of an impact can we expect from Winslow?
Thanks, Alex. Like so many, I was a Gandolfini fan. I still watch the Sopranos repeats every night. Winslow is a wild card. There's still talent there, but the knee (at least 5 surgeries) is a concern. They'll probably have to limit his reps to get him through camp.
Do you believe the Jets should pick up two receivers such as lloyd and edwards or would one be good enough to improve their poor receiving core?
They don't need two, Mike, unless there's an injury. Lloyd is a head case; I don't think Idzik wants to go there. I think Braylon is a long shot as well. But, you're right, they need a WR. It would cast Idzik in a poor light if they go into the season with the current cast.
Do you think Idzick will approach Wilkerson about a contract extension before the season starts?
There is no chance of that happening. He still has two years left on his rookie deal. However, I expect it to happen after the season.
Rich- Who takes over Brendan Moore's role as veteran leader on, and off the field? I'm guessing Nick Mangold?
You raise a good point, Bryan. I think leadership is an issue for this team. They dumped a lot of veteran leaders in the offseason. So who fills the void? I see Mangold on offense -- although he's not a loud, rah-rah type. On defense, it'll be Cromartie, with guys like Wilkerson and Davis stepping into more prominent roles.
Hi Rich, Great job as always. A front office question - What do you think of Terry Bradway's new assignment? Is this a good fit given his background?
Thanks, Matt. Terry has a new title, but I'm not sure if his responsibilities will be all that different. He was heavily involved with the draft anyway; now he'll have the title of senior director of college scouting. He and Jeff Bauer, the DCS, are close. In fact, Bauer coached Bradway's kid when he lived in KC. Bradway is responsible for Bauer landing with the Jets.
rich i've noticed you've been a lot more positive on the jets lately on the espn new york blog. not a question just very happy about it
Well, they haven't lost a game in six months, so ...
If the QB situation doesn't work out this year, any chance the Jets draft Johnny Football (assuming he comes out of A&M)?
Oh, yeah. I can definitely see that happening, can't you? I'm not saying he's a franchise-caliber QB, but if Geno fizzles and the Jets have a losing year, they'll need to make a big splash. Heeeere's Johnny Football.
How did Rontez Miles do in mini-camp and do you think he can make the team?
Miles was slowed by a groin injury for awhile, but he returned before minicamp. I think he's struggling to pick up the defense; it's not an easy system for a safety. If he can do that, and if he can carve a niche on special teams, he'll have a decent chance.
Simple question. Just looking for a one word/one name answer. Who is under center at 1:00pm on Sunday, Sept. 8th? Mark or Geno?
Greg. No, just kidding. Mark.
Do you think we will see an 18-20 game regular season in the next 5-10 years?
I think 18 is inevitable. It's just a matter of when. I wouldn't be a fan of that. The injury rate is so high now, imagine adding two games.
gut feeling on mike goodson's availability for 2013?
Two things could happen: The case is dragged out in the courts for the entire season and he misses no time. Or they reach a plea bargain before the season and he gets a 1-game suspension. At some point, whether it's '13 or '14, he's gonna get punished. This is all based on the gun charges going away, which I think they will.
Hey Rich. How does a healthy Colon and Peterman/Winters compare to Slauson and Moore of last year? This team has been cursed ever since they fired Faneca. Still have no idea why they choose to eat 6 million to dump him versus spending 7 to keep him. Yards per rush went from 4.5 (Franeca Era) to 3.8 (2011-12). How important are guards in Marty?s Offensive
Excellent question, Derek. I think you'll see Winters in there soon, possibly for the opener. The next-best guy, Colon or Peterman, would start at RG. Colon is a very good run blocker when healthy, but he's battled injuries in recent years. They wanted to upgrade the athleticism at guard to help with open-field blocking on screens and toss plays. However, Marty relies a lot on zone blocking, so I don't think you'll see a lot of guards leading a sweep.
How long until we start hearing the Rex Ryan being fired talk once the season starts? Realistically looking at their schedule, think they have best-case scenario a 3-6 record going into the bye week. Feel like if they lose that Buffalo game in Week 3 it's going to be "look over your shoulder" time
No, that won't happen. I think Rex will get the entire season. Look, this is a massive job ahead of him. Some might say it's a no-win situation. I'll say this: I believe he has been re-energized by the whole deal.
Assuming that Goodson only serves a 1 game suspension. How do you see the depth chart and really the amount of snaps working out in the backfield?
I think Ivory will be the primary ballcarrier, with Powell spelling him. I think Goodson will be the third-down back. I don't see McKnight with a role.
Rich, just terrible news today. But there's a chat on so I'll put a question out there. You mentioned that Kendrick Ellis would surprise a few people this year. What did you see in OTAs and mini-camp?
I see a more confident guy, a more decisive guy. He's in better shape, too. The opportunity is there for him; it could be a once-in-a-lifetime shot. With DLM, you have to see when the pads go on. Then we'll get a better read.
Will hill become that playmaker he was drafted to be
I'm starting to have my doubts. I had to laugh when I saw Sanjay Lal talking in the paper the other day about Hill's drops last season being overblown. Hello? He was targeted only 47 times. Anything more than 1 drop was too many.
I truly believe that most of Sanchez issues last year were because of an inept receiving core. Those young receivers could not get open for the life of them. Even if the Jets bring in a veteran how much can that really help?
I'd say some of Sanchez's issues could be attributed to the WR corps, not most. Can a vet help? Not an off-the-street free agent; they're on the street for a reason. But if the problem persists in training camp, I think they have to make a trade for help.
Writing about the Jets is super easy when you pick at the low hanging fruit. Have you ever thought about challenging yourself and leaving the barbs out of your columns?
What can I say? I'm not tall enough, I guess.
Rich, In your honest opinion do you believe the Jets and the Pats would be covered exactly the same if Woody accused Putin of theft, and Hayden Smith was involved in a murder investigation?
Not. A. Chance.
Hi Mr. Cimini,Supposedly, Mark Sanchez's performance has been superior to Geno Smith's thus far. Why should that stop Geno from starting in week 1 though? We know Sanchez has decent physical skills but is a total mental midget. Shouldn't Jets nation at least give Geno a shot? Personally I think Geno will be the next Donovan McNabb working with Marty.Thank you.
You're exactly right, Mr. Kevin. This QB battle is far from over. You know what you have in Sanchez. The question this summer will be, can Geno show enough improvement to function in Week 1 as a starting QB? THAT is the issue. He'll get every opportunity to prove that.
Hi Rich- Why haven't the Jets looked at Kerry Rhodes- Perhaps him and the organization can work out their issues.
I don't see that happening ... although I must admit, it would be a fun story.
If he remains on team, what do you think Goodson's role will be?
I think he'll be the third-down back, backup RB to Ivory and perhaps a KOR.
Stop writing about Tebow
Rich, Do you think David Harris gets the boot after this year? I haven't heard much about him lately, good or bad.
I tend to doubt it. He'd be going into the final year of his contract and they could cut him without serious cap ramifications, but his salary/cap charge drop significantly. He needs to pick up his play, no question, but he'd have to have an awful year to get the boot.
I consistently hear Rex talk about how his defenses are always in the top 10, etc., etc.; but let's face it, when they actually need a stop, they don't deliver any more than an average defense. Granted that the offense doesn't help much, but it's not always about the offense. Will that change this year?
The defense finished 8th last year, but they had a lot of tomato cans at the end of the year that enabled them to get that high. You're right, the defense was average. Will it change? Don't know. If Milliner is the real deal and they can manufacture a pass rush, then, yes, they'll be improved.
Thursday chat? Ira's not first? This just seems wrong! But thanks Rich, always appreciate your insight. We are all hoping Tebow lifted a Jets curse and somehow brought it up to Foxboro. What are you hearing about Hernadez? It sounds bad so far, but they haven't charge him with anything yet either. What are you hearing?
I know what you know, Andy. From a distance, it doesn't look good for him, but let's not rush to judgment. What's happening up there -- media following him everywhere -- is crazy. Imagine if it happened in NY.
Seems to me that the team continues to talk way too much...specifically now with Mangold's comments about the players wanting Sanchez to be the starting QB. When will the organization tell the players to refrain from this kind of chatter? If Geno Smith is the better QB now, he should start. Simple as that.
I think Mangold's comments got blown out of proportion. He didn't say Sanchez should be the QB. He said the team wants to win and the QB that gives them the best chance RIGHT NOW is Sanchez. Heck, Rex said that last week. Let's see what they're saying in the middle of August.
Say the JETS go 8-8, have a top 3 defense and Sanchez rebounds to at least and average QB rating. What happens with coach Ryan?
I'd give him coach of the year and a contract extension.
do you think the jets would be willing to give up on a 2nd round pick (geno) after a year and draft a franchise qb in the 1st round next year?
Yes, no question.
Rich - conflicting reports on whether Mark Sanchez's teammates want him to be the starting QB. Is that a case of the offense's opinion versus the defense's opinion?
There are no conflicting reports. The CBS "report" from a month ago was sketchy to say the least. I wouldn't put any credence in that -- at all! It was garbage.
Rich, can you describe the differing skill sets of Antonio Allen and Josh Bush?
Good question. They are very different. Allen is a "box" safety, accustomed to playing near the LOS. Decent blitzer, too. Bush is a former QB, better in pass coverage. He'd be a liability in the box.
Hi Rich! The last time that The Jets won a Super Bowl, I was pooping diapers (literally). I have to hear my friends, who are Giants fans gloat about thier 4 Lombardi trophies! Are us die hard Jets fans loyal to a fault? Is there any hope at all in the next 5-10 years? I like how you always tell it like it is. Thanks!
Appreciate the candor, Chris. According to the ESPN future rankings, there's no hope. I'm not ready to go that far, however. Idzik has a plan; he deserves at least 3 years to execute it. Every championship team needs a coach/QB combination. I can't say the Jets have that because Ryan and Sanchez could be goners in a year. But hang in there, Chris.
Hi Rich. I think that Ivory will have a huge year for the Jets. He has had enough carry carries to make out a season. I think that it is reasonable to assume that his YPC go from 5 to 4.5, and if he does that along with 275 carries, that would put him at 1,237.5 yards, and I think that is completely reasonable. If he does that, and Broadway Geno is the starting QB, I think that they will make the playoffs, because their defense will be top ten. Am I completely crazy?
Maybe not completely. It's not a bad thought. Ivory has flashed potential, but he's never done it over the long haul. That can break some RBs -- the constant pounding can turn powerful men into mush. That's why Curtis Martin was so great. He was there every week. If Ivory can do that, it certainly would help whoever is the QB.
what veteran qbs are still out there for the jets to sign
There are a few out there, but I think they're gonna stay status quo.
Rich - do you think Rex's plan for more aggressive playcalling on D will overcome some of the lack of depth or expose it?
Overcome it -- assuming everybody stays healthy.
Are you confident we will maximize the Richardson pick and play enough 34 because if we don't it will be a waste of a high 1st round pick?
I'm curious about that myself. He'll move around, even play some 34 NT and 43 DT.
I agree with you that Sanchez will be the opening starter but how long do you think he'll last? Do you think Geno will replace him by the end of the season? After the week 10 bye possibly?
Geno will play at some point. No doubt. They need to form an evaluation before the '14 draft.
Do you think the west coast offense will help Mark Sanchez?
It'll help him get rid of the ball quicker. But accuracy is a concern.
Why doesn't Joe Mcknight get more playing time?
Needs to stay healthy and improve focus.
Do you think that the Jets having the beginnings of a dominant D-line? They have clearly spent some resources their.
Yes, it could. It should be. Like you said, a lot of resources -- three No. 1 picks and a No. 3.
Looks like the circus has moved North. Despite the offensive struggles in OTA's and minicamp did Sanchez at least show he could execute the offense the way it was meant to?? The receivers he was working with camp cannot be the ones we start the season with.
Sanchez can get them in and out of the huddle and get them lined up correctly. He can make adjustments at the line. That's his advantage over Geno. As for the WRs ... ugh.
Rich, Really huge loss yesterday with Jennings. Why do you think the Jets moved on from him doing the radio for the Jets?
I'm not sure, Ira, but I will say this: Dave was a true gentleman. He was serious about his craft, whether it was punting or broadcasting. He was smart and engaging, but quiet. He always had time for me when I had questions.
Have either of the fullbacks jumped out at you this far?
No, but it's hard to gauge without pads.
who do you think will start at corner wilson or milliner?
If healthy, it'll be Milliner.
Sorry, but it's time to wrap. I went over my time limit, but I wanted to take extra questions because I'm going on vacation and it'll be a few weeks before we chat again. As always, thanks for great questions. It's a pleasure to "chat" with such hardcore fans. I can tell by the questions that you guys take it seriously. Stay tuned to the Jets blog because it'll be updated daily through the so-called 'down' time. Take care, stay safe and speak to you soon. Rich
