We'll get rolling here in a sec... Keep sending in your comments/questions...
hey Jake i was really lookin forward to todays chat but i had some issues so i have to go to the hospital so i dont know when ill be back but my question for today was what player do you think is only a matter of time before they commit
Isaac, hope all is well. I appreciate your commitment to the chat. I think Steven Parker is OU's to lose. He would be a huge pickup, obviously, as arguably the best player in the state.
I cought just a piece of you on the radio this morning ... Which 3 freshman could start in the secondary?
Jake, the 3 I was referring to: Hatari Byrd, Ahmad Thomas and Stanvon Taylor. All three will be in the mix.
Is there any news of Number changing going on with the football team?
Some of the changes: Kendal Thompson (11 to 1), Durron Neal (13 to 5), Jalen Saunders (18 to 8), Lacoltan Bester (81 to 11), Derrick Woods (80 to 12), Eric Striker (41 to 19), Trey Franks (2 to 24).
I keep hearing that OU will take 3 or 4 WR in 2014. Is this true? Personally, I think that two is good enough given the player we already have. I would rather use those extra scholarships on defense, preferably DL. What do you think?
It depends. OU already has 2 WRs, and I think they'd be fine with just taking 2 in this class. But if someone like KD Cannon wanted to commit, I think they'd take him. Or if they whiff on guys at other positions, maybe they go ahead and take a couple more guys at WR to offset that.
Jake, so how stupid does one have to be to steal from Bob Stoops and then use a credit card? Seems to me these guys had an IQ of about 12.
It wasn't exactly Danny Ocean leading this heist.
Jake excluding the obvious choice of Steven Parker. If OU could get only one more commitment out of their current offers, who would be the one to get? Personally, I think Quick has the upside to be a Reggie Bush type player (college Reggie).
Yeah, Quick seems like the one with the most star potential, although they're recruiting him to play defense.
with Justin Brown having success at OU last year, Are the coaches going after bigger WR's or are Bigger WR's liking OU more?
It's been an emphasis the last two years. That's why they were in so early on Trey Metoyer. The WR corps got a little smallish there in 2010 when they were playing Trey Franks, Ryan Broyles, Kenny Stills. They want those slot guys, but also big, physical wideouts who can go up and get the ball downfield.
I interned at KREF when I was in school, used to produce all the show, tell TJ and Toby hello for me! Anyhow, I really like the momentum OU seems to be on lately with recruiting. Is it crazy to think that we have 15-18 commits by Fall and are knocking on a Top 15 class?
Will do, Jason. Both are good guys. Not crazy at all.
How many 4 WR set formations do you think we see this season?
Lot fewer than last season. The base set will be 3 WR/1 TE. They'll run more 2 back, too.
Happy Monday Jake. Any word on the guys that have been arrested beyond the basics?
Nothing really new since Saturday. The older one actually thought it would be a good idea to tell a friend about it at a party in OKC Saturday night. The other guy is a juvenile, so his name isn't being released.
Will the sooners ever develop another sam bradford i would say landry jones but imo bradford is better
I would say so, too. Sam Bradford is a once in a lifetime QB. Don't think we'll see another as good as he was in Norman.
Jake, you are going to have to do a better job if you want to convince me that Tim Kish is a good coach. For example:Tell me all the 5* and 4* LB he recruited at Zona?Tell me the All PAC-10/12 LB that he's coached Zona? Tell me all the LB that he sent to the NFL?Tell me why, instead of getting legitimate LBs, he settles for "athletes / tweeners"?
Well, we made it to 14 minutes today at least.
When we run a two back set, who will be the two rbs?
Millard and D. Williams.
Do you think guys like Diante Savage and Josiah St. John win starting jobs on the OL?
Savage has a better shot than St. John, because the interior guys are more injury prone.
Did Joe C pull a Bob Stoops and give Galloway a chance to go find another job before getting fired?
I have not heard that. But would it surprise me?
Thoughts on Dionte Savage?
Big guy. Should help depth, run blocking. Insurance in case Shead's back goes bad again.
Jake, you mentioned that Blake Bell will obviously not have a start like Sam Bradford did. Is there any reason you say that? Not obviously expecting Bell to do that, it's a once in a decade (perhaps more) type of thing. Still, Has he shown anything that might make you think he doesn't have that potential?
More to do with how great Sam Bradford was.
Do you believe Quincy Russell will play for OU this fall? There have been several rumors about what's holding him up. What's the latest? Is he going to get here once he pays the bills? He was supposed to be here last week and never showed.
I learned my lesson with Courtney Gardner. Who really knows?
Jake, any update on the short list of coaches for the Baseball team?
Perfect Game threw out the Illinois State coach as a possibility. I don't know much about him. My initial suggestion was to hire the Minor brothers, but I haven't heard them connected to the search yet.
What kind of chances do you give OU with joe mixon. Hadn't heard his name until just recently. Seems like he's the real deal
He is the real deal. Mixon apparently loves Adrian Peterson, which has given OU another in with him. He would be a great pickup.
Jake, has anyone really stood out or surprised at the offseason 7-on-7's the players have been running that you have heard of?
Heard good things about Stanvon Taylor. Also heard the QBs have been doing well.
Jake if you were named the Coach at OU, whats the one main thing you would change about the program
Probably fire myself.
Read somewhere that Tay Evans is all but a lock for Stanford. Agree?
Is Geneo Grissom capable of finishing the season without an injury?
Why won't you address how poorly Tim Kish is doing at OU? He was a misfire hire and it's showing.
I address it 20 times a week per chat.
Q. Russell on campus yet? Hearing it has been a payment issue with the JC. I know you like these questions.
Not on campus yet. Having serious doubts about him.
Hi Jake. When will we start hearing progress reports from summer workouts? Thanks.
Already starting to hear things. Stanvon Taylor, Hatari Byrd look really good, have had great attitudes. One reason why I say those two and Ahmad Thomas could all be major factors this season. We'll see if they keep it up.
Josiah St. John is just taking another class right? Nothing too serious to be worrying about? Thanks.
Do you know if all the commits (besides Quincy Russell obviously) have shown up yet?
Kerrick Huggins (academics) and LJ Moore (Hawaii) are the only others, I believe
Who are the LB that are backing up Frank Shannon and Cory Nelson?
Aaron Franklin will be the primary backup at both spots.
Is there any other in-state players, aside from parker, that OU is giving a hard look?
Not yet. They may circle back to someone like Norman North TE Payton Prince, though.
Any word on how Huggins is doing with the classes he signed up for? There's still a chance, right?
That's what I am told. We'll see.
Can you confirm that the bill to community college is the only thing holding Quincy Russell up? Or did he not pass the classes he needed to?
Hard to confirm anything when Russell won't answer the phone when we call.
Kind of along he lines about the Joe Mixon question, can we litterally get to the point were we have too many good RBs and WRs which will hurt us even more down the line then we are right now for DT help? Eating scholorship on position we are stacked at? Its and interesting thought huh? I mean "potentially Mixon", Ford, Ross, Perine we can't get them all carries ask Roy Finch! Could have have played a bit into Brandon Williams leaving or was the clearly wanting to be closer to home?
Williams' issue was a family/homesick one. But you're right. Ideally, you'd like to close strong in the trenches and not have to go over at WR. Sooners are fine at the skill spots.
Out of the new coaches, who do you think is going to get the most out of the players already here?
Bedenbaugh has the most to work with.
Is Stanvon Taylor a CB or a FS?
Jake, pick the most over-rated player in the Bob Stoops era: A. Moe Dampeer B. RJ Washington C. Trey Metroyer D. Other
Metoyer? Really? He's been here only one year. I'll go with "other"
How about my Miami Heat? I know my sooner brethren wanted the Spurs to win, but what about Ray Allen and Lebron? Speaking of basketball. Is OU just going to be brutal this year? Hard to get enthusiastic about this roster.
Congrats, Tony. Well deserved title. OU won't be brutal. They could finish 4th in the Big 12, make the tourney. Buddy Hield needs to take the next step, though.
Is Daniel Brooks still playing DB?
Any word on how Jordan Evans is doing? Think he ever makes an impact?
Yes on Brooks; Evans could help on special teams this year.
D. The entire 2008 recruiting class
Yeah, that was a rough one.
Jake I know it's waaay early to be thinking about this, but do you think 2014 could be a special year assuming the defense at least shows a pulse and a step in the right direction in 2013? We'll be returning a ton of players on both sides of the ball.
Hard to forecast without seeing 2013. How will the young D-linemen develop? Are Alex Ross/Keith Ford really for real? Will there be any depth at LB? Will one of the QB bud into a star? We just don't know.
OU seems to have no problem attracting offensive talent to Norman, except for along the OL, but I fully anticipate that improving under Bedenbaugh. But what in the world is hurting defensive recruiting so badly? Conference? Opposition? Reputation? Coaching?
Patton got a bad rap, but he recruited pretty well, actually. Habern/Darlington were top 5 centers nationally. Shead hasn't been able to stay healthy. Everyone wanted Stephen Good. Patton had some bad luck.
Assuming bell starts, what % chance do you think there is that knight transfers? With thomas and hansen coming, thats a ton of QB depth and quality.
Even in that scenario, Knight could be the starter by his junior year. I think he'll play it out.
How much are you looking forward to the season starting (Or even fall practice) so you don't have to answer the same question every Monday.Btw you should just put "Gabe Lynn is terrible. As is Tim Kish. And I can't tell you who will and will not make it to campus until they are there. These are facts" as a preface to the SoonerNation chat.
Should be pinned at the top so we can just get it out of the way.
Okay, one final Kish question: if Kish were to be fired, who do you think would be the best realistic candidate for LB coach at OU?
It won't stop!!!
Is Keith Ford redshirting this year?
I get the sense he might not. They want him ready for 2014.
Wow! Did not know LJ Moore was coming to Norman? How many corners do you think the Stoops takes now in 2014?
So let's say Jerry Montgomery works wonders and restores the luster to our D-line... what are the chances he bolts for a better job in a few years? I don't remember any of our coaches ever leaving, so history would seem to be on our side.
Sure he would leave to be a d-coordinator somewhere.
What do you believe the chance is that 1 of the incoming db's will beat out Gabe Lynn?
It's definitely possible. Lynn is not exactly JT Thatcher back there. They could also move Lynn back to nickelback.
Have you toured the new dorm? is it opening on time?
No and Yes.
Dbl J - 100%
Jake have you heard anything about the freshman DL? I know you said the secondary guys look good but I'm curious about DJ, Dimon, Obo, Charles, and Romar.
Dimon/DJ have a chance to help
Blake Bell is a RS Jr. Big Ben size, rocket arm, and nice wheels. Freshmen have had big impacts at their schools recently. I think people are seriously underestimating BB...especially considering that he has weapons all around him too. Why is that?
The younger player is always the more intriguing one. Just the way it is. But yeah, Bell is being overlooked. Maybe he's the guy. Maybe he's not. But the tools are all there.
Blake Bell is named the starter on what date Jake?? Place your chips on a number and spin the wheel..
Two weeks before the opener.
Thank you Ryan, that's what I'm saying.
Hi, Jake. I remember a comment Brent Musburger made during an Ok. State game. That Gundy gets it, you recruit defense and coach up offense. Meaning, I guess, concentrate and get the real talent for D. You agree with this?
Has Gundy recruited well on defense?
Who has more sacks at the end of the season? Tapper or Grissom?
What do you see as our toughest game this coming year? The trip to South Bend is looking a whole lot easier without Golson.
Any off the radar recruits that we might have a shot at? Hidden gems at LB maybe?
Tegray Scales (Cincinnati/Colerain) and Greg Miclisse (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) are two guys Kish has been looking at.
Ouch Jake, your recruit defense comment will hurt Gundy's feelings.
He's a man. He'll be OK.
Do you have high hopes for Frank Shannon? He's only a RS Soph and I thought he played pretty well last year at MIKE
I do actually. I have high hopes for the LBs as a whole. Nelson, Shannon, Franklin -- not a bad trio... assuming they actually play this year.
That's my point. I don't agree with the comment. Looks like he focuses on offense to me. Just thought I was missing something.
Well, neither do I.
Kish can look all he wants. He still can't get any LBs on campus.
You can cut the hate with a knife
Jake,For arguments sake, lets asssume that we didnt have the fumblethon against KST n won the Big12 outright. Played n the Fiesta bowl n won it or maybe lost but not as bad as in the cotton bowl. Do you still think Bob goes ahead with the coaching changes? Because through the losses to KST n ND, Bob's argument had been that the team was not that far off n it would ve been valid too.
Probably not. The losses gave him the impetus to make the changes.
So is there something to the idea that cornered, combative Bob might be a real improvement? Or is this just a feel-good narrative? I must admit that I would generally view it to be the latter, but am nevertheless excited about the change.
I like the idea of OU being overlooked this year. This team has played tight the past 3-4 years. Not having huge expectations might allow them to play loose, and, as Les Miles would say, "Let 'er rip!"
What is Jordan Phillips up side? Does he have the size/athleticism to be on the all big 12 team ... or just a nice player?
All-Big 12 is asking a lot for 2013. But 2014? Sure, he could get there.
Jake, what is going on with St. John, Russell, Huggins, and Moore? I keep hearing that it's a foregone conclusion that Huggins ends up at JUCO and that Russell is going to bale on the Sooners for the sun devils. Is any of this true? Why are St. John and Moore no-shows?
Moore is on a family vacation in Hawaii. He'll be in Norman in July. Huggins has a class to complete. He could still make it to Norman under the NCAA's plus 1 exception, though I'm not holding my breath, either. St. John should be here in July. Russell, I give up, honestly. Who really knows with him?
Jake, where does OU focus at WR...I dont think Cannon is coming to OU. He has said the offense will matter, OU will not be throwing as much this year
I think they'd be just fine with Todd/Mead comprising this WR class. Anything more would be gravy.
Jake, loved the article on Bell...If the Sooners go into South Bend and are playing well but not scoring, at what point does OU try Thompson/Knight? Or does Bob let Bell stay in if the game is still close?
If it's 24-3 Irish in the third quarter, I think one of the younger guys gets a chance.
Any chance OU slows down the offensive pace this year to give opposing teams less chances to expose the defense?
Yes. I think they're going to reign in the tempo.
Hi Jake, My name is Kris from Des Moines. I am a 5 star linebacker recruit and I would like your advice on where I should play ball at the next level. I can go to a Big 12 school where I can look forward to chasing around a 180lb 4.4-4.6 slot guy for 90 plays a game or I can go to the Big 10 or SEC school and play downhill and knock guys out like I did in HS...help me Jake!
Have fun at Alabama.
Who is the best player on defense right now?
Colvin by a mile.
Any chance we're about to witness a 2006 OU type of team? Not necessarily the players or style of play, but more of a team that exceeded expectations due to pre-season events. Minus the Boise State loss, of course.
Very possible, although that 2006 team lost three games, too.
So Bob Stoops is going to burn Keith Ford's redshit? That's pretty dumb. Cant Gundy get a RB ready without giving him 18 carries a season?
If they feel like Ford will be the starter in 2014, they'll want to give him some experience this year, so he's ready for the following season mentally.
LJ Moore is on a family vacation and will be at OU in about two weeks. Safe to say he earned a red shirt already.
Not necessarily. But he'll have much to make up.
Jordan Wade passed the eye test for me. Does he make the leap this year?
He could be a solid rotation player. Any other leap would exceed my expectations.
I'd go to Hawai'i too. But only if Mila Kunis is guaranteed to be checking me into my hotel.
Yeah, no kidding, right?
With OU's history at DT, NG etc and we all can name them...3 Selmons, Bryan, McCoy, Liggins, Harris, Burris, Casillas...Why are we not leveraging this?
Kids in high school have never heard of any of those guys. Even Harris probably now.
But, they can definitely sell the general tradition there, for sure.
Which OU player will be the first one suspended for targeting an opposing player's head next season?
From what I heard, Ahmad Thomas was a striker during the spring. I'll go with him.
Is OU going to start huddling again? Or is that too little tempo?
What are the chances that OU fields a truly special team this year?
Like a national championship-level special team? Highly unlikely. But I would have said the same going into the 2000 season.
Torrea Peterson, just another solid role player like Wade?
Any idea who will be elected team captains?
Millard, Ikard, Colvin for sure. My guess would be Corey Nelson as the fourth.
Does jaz play at all this year
Gonna be tough. He has no margin for error off the field. And, the competition for time at WR is intense.
Who emerges as the WR on the outside?
Bester will probably get the start initially there. If Metoyer puts it all together, it will be him eventually.
Does OU win the Big XII this year? Lots of fools picking Texas...
I won't be picking either.
Explain to me exactly how huddling is to slow of tempo as compared to having everyone stare at the sideline until the play clock runs under 5 and watching the QB scramble to get the call to the lineman right before the clock hits zero???
Will we see the reintegration of the shuttle pass into this year's offense. Preferably to RF.
It's in the playbook. Who knows if it will be called or not, though?
How good do you think OU's special teams return units will be this year? As good as last year?
Better. Saunders > Justin Brown on punt returns.
Do you think we will be better prepared for Lache Seastrunk this year than we were for Tavon Austin last year? Hopefully??
Impossible to be less prepared.
Who have you been hearing has really impressed so far in the Summer?
Hatari Byrd/Stanvon Taylor
Is Roy Finch out of the dog house?
Yes. Doesn't mean he'll play, though.
Well thats all the time we have for this week. Thanks for all the questions. Make sure you pick up a copy of my book.
Jake is right. Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions today. Chat will be back next Monday, same time, same place. I'm also pinch hitting for Toby Rowland on SportsTalk1400 this week, 6-9 a.m. CT. Tune in or gimme a call there. Otherwise, everyone have a great week.
