Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. We're one day away from the NBA Draft. We're going all hour ... let's roll!
Be honest. You're ready for the draft to be over, right? Go home, lay on the beach, forget that this (the most unpredictable draft all time!) week ever happened? Maybe spend two seconds without someone asking you what the Cavs are gonna do at #1?
No way. My favorite time of the year. Love it. Love the intrigue. Wish I KNEW what Cavs were doing at one, but it makes it more suspenseful. As to what the Cavs are going to do? I don't know. I don't think they know. However, reading the tea leaves, I think Noel is the favorite. Could be Len, Bennett or Porter. But if I was betting man, based on all my conversations with people, he's the guy.
Are the cavs going to be able to trade the number 1 pick for a proven veteren. Are they trying to do so, and what teams would they be talking to right now?
They are trying. Not sure they're going to pull it off. Doubtful actually. Trades are hard to do period. But here the Cavs want A LOT in return for the No. 1 and I just don't think teams really value it. To get a very good young player, it's going to take more than the No. 1 pick. They'll likely have to deal Tristan Thompson too.
The steals stat for college big man is really intriguing to me. How much does this weigh your opinion of Noel and do you think it's a big factor in how teams determine his worth?
It's a big factor in many of the analytical models that teams use. Steals are a predictor of NBA success for big men. Noel averaged 2.2 steals per game. Len averaged 0.2 steals per game. That's a big factor hurting him in various analytics studies. It speaks to Noel's superior athleticism and motor.
If you were the cavs, would you heavily consider oladipo? obviously they took waiters last year, but i feel they need a more dynamic wing player. also, would you flip thompson and the number one for a player like a rudy gay?
I would. If I was the Cavs GM it would be: 1. Noel 2. Oladipo 3. Porter
What do you think the Orlando Magic will do with pick #2 ? & Will they make a deal for Bledsoe ?
If Noel is there at No. 2, I believe strongly that the Magic would take him there. If he's off the board, I think Victor Oladipo or Ben McLemore are the guy. Like them both, but hearing they lean Oladipo right now. As for Bledsoe? They're trying to make a deal, but Clipps asking for a lot more than Afflalo right now.
Does it come down to Porter and Bennett for the Wizards? And if Bennett gets past them, what are some other possible landing spots for him, what do you see his floor being?
I've been writing since lottery night that it comes down to Otto Porter and Anthony Bennett in Washington. There's a split in the front office. Some are Porter fans. Others Bennett fans. The latest I have is that the Wizards still haven't made their decision yet. Could go either way, but I still lean Porter.
There have been rumors of the Wizards trading out of the 3rd pick, presumable so a team could move up for Oladipo, does trading the third pick (and whatever it takes to balance out the salary) for Derrick Williams and the 9th overall pick or for Luol Deng and the rights to Nikola Mirotic make sense?
It might, because the Wizards want to make the playoffs next year. Derrick Williams, for all of his flaws, is more NBA ready than the player they get at 3 and they'd still have the 9th pick. I think the issue is long-term upside. I think Otto Porter or Anthony Bennett have more upside than Williams. So you trade the future for the now. Every time the Wizards have done that in the past it's come back to bite them.
Why are the Bobcats supposedly shopping MKG? He's a better talent than anyone in this year's draft on the wing.
Who are the Bobcats targeting? Are they looking at Oladipo if he falls to #4? I see him, MKG, and Biyombo having a hard time getting buckets next year.
Information is tough to come by out of Charlotte but hearing Alex Len, Bennett, McLemore and Cody Zeller. Zeller is a dark horse in Charlotte. GM Rich Cho likes him a lot, but he's struggling to convince the rest of his organization he's the guy. Wouldn't be shocked if Bobcats traded back with the Wolves either. They could land Derrick Williams and Cody Zeller!
Are the Suns a lock to take either Oladipo or McLemore at this point, unless Noel somehow falls to #5?
Oladipo is a sure thing if he's at No. 5. McLemore is a maybe. Michael Carter-Williams and Cody Zeller are also in play.
What are the chances that either Len, Porter or McLemore are available at the Pelicans pick?
If Len or Porter are there, they are taking them. If they are not, it probably comes down to Trey Burke v. Anthony Bennett. I think they like Burke.
What's wrong with the Kings taking C.J. McCollum and keeping him as a 2-guard? I know they have plenty of guards who take shots, but not any who make them. McCollum has been lights out from reports in workouts with the Kings coaching staff.
I have the Kings taking McCollum there. He's not a fit, but I honestly don't think much of this roster will be there on opening night. So you don't just take fit. I also think the Kings are seriously considering trading down to pick up a couple of assets. Utah is a possibility.
Any update on the Jimmer trade rumors? Any other possible trades involving the Kings you have heard recently?
I know the Kings are saying Jimmer isn't on the block. Every GM, when they sign the contract, has to sign an oath that says I will deny ever putting a player on the block. It's in there. No GM in history has ever shopped anyone. Oh, but the Kings are getting calls. If they can move him for a first round pick, they're doing it.
If I'm the Pistons and I have a choice between Trey Burke, MCW, KCP and C.J. McCollum, who am I taking?
Pistons have thrived by hanging around and having a top guy fall (Could be Bennett or McLemore this year). If both are off the board I think they go Burke, MCW, McCollum in that order. Zeller another possibility there at 9.
Can the wolves actually get a deal done to move up and nab a player like Oladipo? If not who is their guy?
They are really trying. Magic, Wizards, Bobcats, Suns all open to trading their picks. Wolves willing to offer anyone but Love and Rubio. Flip loves Oladipo, but if they are at 9, I strongly believe it will be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Marshon Brooks for Wolves' 26th pick close to a done draft-night deal?
Decent chance it gets done on draft night ... yes.
If both Pope and McCallum are off the board where will the Blazers go? And please don't say another project big...we already have that
Zeller, Steven Adams. Or if any of the point guards fall, like Burke, Carter-Williams, they'd take those guys.
Do you think Aldridge will be a Blazer at the start of next season ? Also do you think the Blazers will stay at 10 or move up or Down ?
I think that the Blazers will listen to Aldridge offers. Seriously listen. Given how good he is, I do think there's a solid chance he's played his last game in a Blazers jersey. The Blazers aren't going to give him away obviously, but he's an intriguing trade target for a lot of teams.
Are the Sixers locked into a big man (Zeller/Adams) or might they go guard if it's available?
They like Zeller/Adams/Olynyk. But they also have their eye on Sergey Karasev.
What are you hearing with the Thunder? Still trying to trade up? Also who do you hear they like if they stay at 12?
They've talked about trading up. If they stay pat the four guys I'd watch are Steven Adams, Sergey Karasev, Kelly Olynyk and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Be very surprised if it isn't one of those four guys. Think Adams is in the lead, but I hear they really like Olynyk too.
Mavs found a trade partner yet for their first rounder?
They're talking to everyone right now. I still think it's likely that they trade their pick tomorrow. The Cavs are obvious partners, but it's a very tricky trade given Marion's ETO status and the Cavs needing to wait to clear cap space. Other options are out there. If they keep the pick, it will be because a favorite, like Michael Carter-Williams slips to them.
Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey has said the team will be "very aggressive" in looking to move up in the draft. Who in this draft is worth the Jazz trading up for?
If they want a point guard, the top shelf one probably aren't there at 14. So if they want CJ McCollum or Trey Burke or Michael Carter Williams they have to get to the 6 to 8 range. A package of 14 and 21 might get it done. But I think more likely they'll have to offer Alec Burks.
What do you see the Jazz doing with there two 1st round picks?
If they keep their picks and the three top PGs are off the board? I think they go big with either Lucas Nogueira or Kelly Olynyk at 14 and take a PG like Shane Larkin, Dennis Schroeder or Isaiah Canaan at 21.
Who do you see the Bucks taking with the 15th pick? Possible trades?
They really like Karasev, but will probably have to move up a few spots to get him. If he's not there, Shane Larkin, Dennis Schroeder and Glen Rice Jr. are the guys to watch in Milwaukee.
What will the Celtics look to do with the 16th pick?
So tough. So many things in motion right now for the Celtics. I hear Ainge likes: Steven Adams, Dennis Schroeder, Kelly Olynyk, Shane Larkin & Isaiah Canaan. Not sure what order ...
Celtics: KG gone, Pierce gone, both gone, or neither gone?
I think, if Ainge can get decent assets for them, both KG and Pierce are gone. I think he's anxious to get the rebuilding started.
Heard rumors that the Hawks are intrigued by Shabazz Muhammad and may be looking to trade up to get him. Is it a strong possibility?
Not sure they have to trade up. Think he'll be there for them at 17 or 18 if they stay put. I hear they also like Giannis Antetokounmpo a lot and would likely use one of their picks on him. They supposedly like Mason Plumlee and Kelly Olynyk a lot too.
The Bulls need a competent big and more shooting. Which gets addressed in the first round?
Will be a tough call for them because both will be on the board. Big guys like Mason Plumlee, Kelly Olynyk or even someone like Tony Mitchell will be there for bigs. Shooters like Reggie Bullock, Allen Crabbe, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Tony Snell also likely available. A very tough call indeed.
Hearing Rocket's getting offers for Thomas Robinson. Cavs offered No.19 and the Bulls offered No.20. Is Cleveland a good spot for T-Rob?
Both are solid spots. He doesn't start in either place, but it's solid value for their picks. If the Rockets get pick 19 or 20, they'll likely select an international player.
What do the Nets do? Making a push for KG?
Sure. That's a no brainer for them. KG would be a huge get for the Nets. If they stay at 22 someone like Gorgui Dieng, Tony Snell are possibilities. They're also talking about moving MarShon Brooks for 26.
do you see the pacers keeping the 23rd pick??
They're trying to trade it ... heard their name tied to both Jimmer Fredette and Thomas Robinson as well. They need bench help, not a rookie. If they keep the pick: Isaiah Canaan, Rudy Gobert, Tony Snell are options.
Who do Knicks take and why at 24?
Tough call this late in the draft. Jamaal Franklin has a lot of buzz here. So does Tony Mitchell. I like both players a lot.
What are the clippers looking to do in the first round and are they going to make moves to try an move up?
Doubt they move up. The want either a shooter like an Allen Crabbe or Tony Snell. Or they go with a back-up point guard like Isaiah Canaan.
what do you see the Nuggets doing at 27? will they keep the pick?
Probably trying to replace Andre Iguodala who I think they'll have a very hard time re-signing. Shooters like Reggie Bullock, Tim Hardaway, Allen Crabbe or Tony Snell seem like potential fits.
Have you heard any Spurs related rumors?
No. And if I did, I wouldn't believe the. The Spurs are the quietest team in the league. Rudy Gobert seems like a really good fit if he's on the board. Ditto for Mike Muscala of Bucknell.
Ok. We went through every team in the first round and I've gotta run. We have our Final Big Board up today. Jay Bilas and I debate the No. 1 pick, and Mock Draft 7.0 is coming tomorrow. Have a great draft everyone!
