History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation. Welcome to Klawchat.
What do you think Ryan Jackson could do in the majors, if he were actually permitted to play SS for the Cardinals?
Play superior offense and defense to Kozma. More help on the defensive side, but Kozma's been so terrible it'd be hard to be worse with the stick.
Have you had a chance to see Henry Urrutia this year or talked to anyone who has?
Talked, yes. Seen, not yet, but soon. Finally got everything moved in and bought a new car two nights ago, so I'm ready to head out to games again.
Let's get it out of the way early for everyone's benefit: The reason Keith didn't include a player from your team on his "real" All Star team is because he hates your team and probably you. And selecting Buster Posey over Yadier Molina is not akin to calling Yadier Molina a worthless bum.
Stop talking logic and sense. I've told you before that won't get you anywhere on the Internet.
Why Simmons over Jean Segura at NL shortsop? Is Simmons defense that much superior?
Yes, it's that far superior, and it's far more sure than Segura's bat. If we'd had this conversation on March 31st, no one would have argued for Segura as a clear choice, perhaps not even as a reasonable choice, once Tulo was out due to injury. Are we all that certain in his hit tool based on just under three months of performance? He's already cooled off relative to the hot start. (Odd stat: In Segura's last 40 games, he has two walks.) I liked him as a prospect and still like him long-term, but could not put that much faith in his present abilities to put him in that spot over Simmons, who does one thing (defense) extremely well.
Do you expect the doubles machine Manny Machado to turn into a 30 HR type guy?
Let's say 25 HR.
I'd be interested to see what your bench for each league would look like. Do you think you would go more for the best all around players or would you go for defensive specialists, pinch hitters, and other types who do one thing really well as a sub?
I'd go for role players - platoon guys who really mash one side, or multiple-position guys so I have more flexibility. I'd probably avoid specialist relievers, though - it's too hard to ensure you get the right matchups.
Do you think Garza gets traded before the all-star break?
Just guessing, but yes.
Thoughts on Wheeler's first couple starts? He looked nervous and I didnt see him flash that wipe-out curve everyone is talking about. And now the pitch tipping issue...
He hasn't shown that wipeout curve because he's getting caught between that and the new slider.
Eric Hosmer is hitting .290/.337/.473 in June with three HRs. Is this just a hot streak or could he be turning it around?
George Brett's influence? I don't know for sure other than that one month isn't enough to say yes, he's back on track.
Why throw me strikes? I'll swing at a pick-off throw to first.
Slight exaggeration, but yeah, not the most patient hitter to come down the pike.
Would you put Yasiel Puig in the All Star game? If it's supposed to be an exhibition to draw the most fans, shouldn't the most talked about player in the league be in the game?
I probably would, yes. I don't have any objection to it, certainly. There's merit in putting a top rookie or two on each squad, for marketing purposes.
Is there any more failure in baseball this year than Milwaukee having Y Betancourt as a starting 1st baseman?
The Mets had Josh Satin as their starting first baseman last night. That's worse.
You were excellent on hang up and listen, any additional podcasting if your future?
Thanks. Just my own podcast for now. Still undecided on a guest/topic for next week, so I'm happy to take suggestions.
Do you see Peter O'Brien as a top 100 prospect next season? He's been raking for the Yankees this season...
He was a 22-year-old college senior in the Sally League. He's also a poor defensive catcher. He won't be a top 200 prospect.
Delaware summers > Phoenix summers
Yeah, but Phoenix winters > all other winters.
I can't wait for some Dish posts from Del'wer. I grew up there and couldn't think of a single restaurant in New Castle County I'd recommend to you. At least you are presumably near Philly, which I think is a good, underrated (hate that word) dining scene.
I'm sitting in a Brew Haha! right now - good coffee and solid cafe food. Way better than Charbucks. We've liked Two Stones, Lucky's, Soffritto, and mad mac's (Newark) so far.
Was this whole story overblown since it looks like the Pirates farm is taking a big step forward this year?
Was the story that they wouldn't develop good players, or that they were doing things that risked injury or alienating players without advancing their development?
Even with a 6-game winning streak, it's too early to say the Dodgers are flirting with adequacy -- but are they at least making eye contact with her?
You shouldn't flirt with adequacy unless it's 1 am. And if you're flirting with mediocrity it's time to just go home.
I saw on Twitter someone compared McCutchen & Alvarez using OPS. You said not to look at that, now that was a stupid question but isnt OPS the best factor when determining how good a hitter is?
No. I wouldn't look at it at all. It underweights OBP substantially.
What kind of car did you get? Did you get a Car? Or did you get a CAR?
A Civic hybrid. Sold my CR-V before we moved.
Wouldn't it be smart to capitalize on Kendrick's first half and trade him? Or is Ruben going to pretend we are contenders all year?
Sort of assumes that you see that Kendrick won't maintain his performance, but that there is at least one major league GM who doesn't see that.
It's funny how hysterical people got over your fictional team for an exhibition game. Do they realize your starters would play like 3 innings at the most? And why are people always so concerned about starters? Why is there no concern that All-Star games are usually finished with guys like Dan Uggla on the field?
The "fictional" part is sort of the key here, no? Plus most of the Cardinal and Brewer fans on Twitter didn't even bother to read the intro.
Is Phillies' management delusional thinking that they shouldn't be sellers?
It's the wrong call. They're not winning the division. They're almost certainly not winning a WC spot as currently constituted. They don't have the farm system depth to trade for everything they need. That's when it's time to sell.
Do you think Matt Krook made a mistake by picking Oregon over the Marlins?
No. I would have advised him to do the same. Potential top 5 pick in 2016. I might have suggested junior college, though, if he also refused to sign the consent to reselect form.
The Pirates rank 20th in runs, 21st in OBP, 24th in team average, fourth in total strikeouts, and 20th in total walks... reasons to believe they'll fall back down to Earth, right?
IMO, yes. And I don't think the bullpen is sustainable, although I said the same about Baltimore's last year and it didn't regress until this season.
Do the Brewers have enough trade pieces (Axford, Ramirez, Weeks, Rodriguez, Gallardo) to begin rebuilding their minor league system? How much would the group as a whole really net them? Melvin should be fired for losing a desperately needed first round pick for Lohse, right?
That was the owner's call, not Melvin's. Unfair to blame the GM for a move that was forced on him. I think Aramis and Gallardo would have significant trade value, enough to net a couple of prospects who project as everyday guys/mid-rotation starters in total. The others would be more salary dumps.
Are the Reds not the poster child why you shouldn't make substantial long-term investments in relief pitchers? The whole city was going nuts this past spring, talking about how the "Nasty Boys" are back and we have them locked up for 3+ years. How soon they forget that the Nasty Boys were only truly nasty for about 14 months.
And wouldn't you rather have Travis Wood than Sean Marshall right now? Plus Torreyes is going to be a big leaguer. Trading assets of value for a veteran reliever and THEN giving him a long-term deal is exponentially worse than doing just one of those things.
Sonny Gray currently leads AAA in strikeouts. Does his bounce-back year have you thinking he's a long-term starter?
I'm hopeful again. He's getting groundballs, and he's given up just four homers - one at home, and three in extreme hitters' parks. The strikeout rate was less of a concern than the potential that he'd be homer-prone as a 5'10" (maybe) right-hander.
Favorite vegetable to put on the grill?
Asparagus. Although lately I've been throwing an eggplant on after I was done cooking dinner, letting it steam in its skin, then pureeing it into baba ghanoush.
Alex Wood was lights out in AA and has been solid in the bullpen. Would you keep him in the pen next year, or send him down to AAA to continue to develop as a SP?
Have you seen that delivery? How many starters do you know who pitch like that?
Why did you move? I always got the impression you loved Arizona very much.
I did love Arizona. The short answer is family reasons, followed by increased work in Bristol. The long answer is sitting in my drafts folder on the dish's server right now.
Will you be doing a mid-season top 100 prospects
Top 50, after the Futures Game.
Man, my son Dylan may be hurt but at least he has his high school memories of all the pitches he threw.
Pretty much. Although perhaps this will stop teams from protecting young pitchers in bubble wrap to try to keep them healthy. There's no evidence that it works.
Kyle Gibson makes his pro debut tomorrow- what can Twins fans expect from him the rest of the season? Will he be good enough and bring enough of a bump to make the front office (wrongly) think they can contend and of course not trade anyone at the trade deadline?
Throws strikes, slider was very sharp in AFL, changeup was solid, showed no platoon split in AAA this year. I'm at least a little optimistic that he can post an ERA around 4-4.25 the rest of the way.
Do you think Christian Bethancourt will ever become a good enough hitter to be a starting catcher in the MLB?
No. Career backup, or maybe a reliever.
What is the ceiling for Taylor Jordan, and - frankly - do you think he's a major league rotation piece?
Fourth starter. Up to 95, above avg CH, fringy breaking ball.
Do you actually enjoy doing these chats, or is this just "part of the job"?
If I didn't enjoy them, I wouldn't do them.
any scouting opinion, personal or from sources, on miguel alfredo gonzalez? do you believe the rumors of a 60 mil payday forthcoming?
No idea on that one. Haven't seen him or talked to folks who have.
Josh Donaldson has a 3.2 fWar and 10% walk rate. Did you ever scout him and do you think this level of production is sustainable?
Yes, ranked him on my top 100 going into 2008. But never thought he'd do this, nor does anything in his minor league record make me think it's sustainable.
Do you project Buxton to hit for power?
Any thoughts about the 16 YO kid Urias, the pitcher the Dodgers have at Great Lakes?
Arm is legit. Tricky one for me, as I rarely if ever scout pitchers that young - he might be projectable just because he's young enough to get taller.
Keith, thoughts on the Paula Deen backlash? I think it's ridiculous if we are basing on something that she said 30 years ago, but somewhat justified if she said it recently.
Meh. She used a pretty inexcusable word. We're not talking about a quote from Huck Finn here.
They're playing Leagues' "Spotlight" here in Brew Haha. As if good coffee wasn't enough to make me a fan.
Any upcoming game reviews on your blog?
Does Patrick Corbin have a 70 slider? You didn't see that coming right?
Game reviews - yes, I have 6-7 I need to play some more and write up. I packed the new ones separately from the over 36 cubic feet of older games I own.
Corbin: No, never saw that coming. Arm got faster. I would never feel comfortable predicting that for a guy his age.
Why is everyone so up in arms about the Posey over Molina? Their WAR is nearly identical and Molina is fueled by a highly atypical BAIBP. Would ANYBODY argue they would prefer Molina to Posey over the next 5 years?
I have no idea why that was so controversial, except for people who seemed to think that the only criterion should have been performance from Opening Day until Wednesday night.
What do you make of the mess that is the NL West?
I try not to look directly at it.
Addison Russell's first MLB game: before or after the 2014 trade deadline?
Best concert you've ever attended?
Of Monsters and Men.
Who just came on here in the cafe as I typed that answer. My powers are extensive and varied.
Is Chris Stratton still a decent prospect or a lost cause as a 22 year old in the Sally league?
Fastball has backed up since college.
you say you analyze not make personal attacks - like when you say jackson should play over kozma. yet then you say kozma is "six kinds of terrible." Isn't that personal? especially when his WAR was .9 last I checked - or does that mean a replacement level player is 10 kinds of terrible?
That's personal? Did I hurt your widdle feewings? Kozma's OBP (and thus WAR) is inflated by his time batting 8th. I've said this before. Pay attention once you stop crying.
Is Phillies prospect Zach Green a prospect to keep an eye on over the next year?
Yes. Liked his swing a little in HS, didn't perform great, was clearly not a SS at the next level. But yes, someone I'd keep an eye on.
Keith, the Tigers just recalled Rondon. He's been lights out in the IL, but I think its plain that he won't take over the 9th in Detroit. Do you think the time he's spent in Toledo has been enough for the success to be real, or is it just that he's been than the debacle the Tigers pen has recently been?
I don't buy Rondon. Throws hard. That's about it.
Do you use softened butter in your sauces at all? Any recommendations on how to soften butter quickly and/or keep it the right temperature without it melting?
I use cold butter cut into cubes. That's the only way I know of to "mount" a sauce - add the butter two or three cubes at a time, off heat, and whisk thoroughly, returning briefly to the heat if the butter won't melt or if the sauce appears to be breaking.
What team do you think Chase Utley will be on come August 1?
Have you heard Yeezus yet?
God bless you.
Why no CarGo in your all star of?
Because the game isn't at Coors Field.
Keith, I am bummed that you left Phoenix right after I moved here after 6 years in Tucson. At least I have a backlog of restaurants to try thanks to The Dish Asked you this on Twitter but I'll try again: What was the last meal you ate out in Phoenix?
Final day included Hillside Spot, Grimaldi's (family meal), and Frost gelato. Also hit Citizen Public House, Searsucker (that place should be WAY busier than it is), and the Queen Creek Olive Mill in our last few weeks.
What your strategy when you play Settlers of Catan? Build as many roads as possible?
I collect all the wood.
Do you see Crick as a potential 2-3 or more back end?
Potential 2. Must improve his command.
Remember when you hated Colorado for saying they wouldn't be very good once Tulo had his yearly injury?
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Cargo's OPS is higher on the road this year
Yes, let's focus on that and ignore the enormous splits he showed the previous three years.
I'm guess the Klaw household was not gripped by the NBA draft last night.
I forgot about it until we got to Lucky's and I saw it on TV. Then I looked up who went first and saw it was someone I'd never heard of so I went back to ignoring it.
What do you think of Zoilo Almonte? Solid future MLB starting OF?
No. Up-and-down guy.
Do the Twins trade Perkins his value could never be higher, right?
Would be a good time to shop him.
Can someone explain this: Voyager was launched in 1977, it was already at Saturn in 1980, and it STILL hasn't left the solar system? Where's the anger about this ass-dragging inter-stellar probe?
That's how the government is watching you right now.
Brad Miller expectations? Huge MiLB numbers. Can he stick at SS? Do you buy the "he's got the talent, it's just in his head" reasoning?
Has the ability to play SS, yes. And I wrote this spring about the changes in his swing, which I think make him likely to carry over the offense to the majors. I'm shocked at how erratic he's been in the field, though - at Clemson, that was the one thing he could do well.
Upton, Braun, Tulo, Cutch, Bruce...was the 2005 draft the best you have scouted?
Also Gordon, Ryan Zimmerman, Ellsbury ... that one and 2011 are the two best I've been involved with.
True or false: Miguel Sano will have claimed the Twins 3B job by this September.
Max Kepler just started his season what can we expect from him the next year and half
Not sure exactly how to answer that beyond that I like him a lot as a prospect and think he's polished enough to finish next year in AA.
All-Star this year should be predicated on last 3 years? Just saying..also, any reason to be excited about Pomeranz being called up? The Rockies have no track record of helping a pitcher develop...
My column wasn't about who should be in this year's All-Star Game - although I have always argued that it is incredibly stupid to pick All-Stars based on who had the best first 70 games. Still holding out hope for Pomeranz. Should at least miss bats, which the Rockies could use.
Time for gallo to start pitching?
He's 19 years old with 23 homers already in the Sally League. Really?
Ceiling on Anthony Rendon?
Star, in between catastrophic injuries.
Who starts at SS for Red Sox next year: Iglesias or Bogaerts?
Iglesias, but Bogaerts will end up the better player.
Thanks for all the questions this week - I have to jump off the chat for some radio hits this afternoon. I'll be back at the usual time next week.
