Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

Good afternoon everyone. Hope you don't mind if I eat while we chat. We'll get started at 13:30 and go right up to first pitch of today's game

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I am Just Wondering is Yankees 3B Kevin Youkilis Out For The Season due to Back Surgery?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:31 PM)

Hey, Chris. The Yankees are officially saying 10-12 weeks, which would put him to the end of September, so that is essentially out for the season. I think the team's belief is they'll be lucky to get anything out of Youkilis this season

mk (albuquerque)

i'm not a yankee fan, so maybe i miss some of the underlying context. but jeez, from here it seems a-rod is just excited about some potentially good news. cashman comes off as petty and looking for reasons to find fault with a-rod in my opinion. am i missing something? i mean, there's enough legit reasons to criticize a-rod. does cash really need to go where he went?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:34 PM)

I think Cashman admitted he overreacted somewhat, but there is a history of A-Rod doing things he has specifically been told not to be the Yankees. And as Cashman said yesterday, the players know the injury protocol and are expected to abide by it. One of the reasons is baseball has a strict rule on rehab times -- for position players it is 20 days -- and I think Cashman was worried that was a-Rod said could be interpreted as starting the rehab clock. That being said, I agree the GM probably has a shorter fuse with alex than with say, Jeter, but there's no doubt more reasons for that than we know

David S. Blum (Bel Air, MD)

Shouldn't the Yankees let A-Rod start playing again ASAP, in the hopes that he suffers a career-ending injury? (I'm serious.)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:35 PM)

Not laughing. There is a school of thought that if a-Rod were to be declared medically unable to play, evceryone would benefit. a-Rod would collect his full contract, the team would collect 80 percent of it back from insurance, and they would be free of him five years early. But what if he is able to play, albeit at a greatly diminished level? Then he becomes your worst nightmare, the $100 million journeyman

jim va.beach [via mobile]

Hey wally. Do you expect to see cashman looking for bat help during trade period? Thanks.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:36 PM)

I do. I think he will be shopping for a third - or first-baseman with power and will be offering some of the surplus pitching: Nova, Hughes or Joba

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Yankees will be Playing in the 84th All-Star Game at Citi Field in Flushing, NY?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:37 PM)

My guess would be Cano and Rivera

Cjg6710 (NY)

After the "shush" debacle with Mariano, it seemed like Joba was on his way out. Why is he still on the team? His last 7 outings have resulted in 14 hits, 9 ER and 4 hrs according to ELIAS.....why is joba being brought in for 1 run games?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:38 PM)

Girardi said last night he still thinks Joba has the talent to help the team. I know for a fact the front office was infuriated with the Mo incident but weren;t quite ready to give up on him. But don;t despair: The trading deadline is a month away. I'd be surprised if he's still a Yanke on august 1

Cjg6710 (NY)

I'll be the first to admit that A-rod has been nothing short of a clown in pinstripes, but his argument that the yankees dont want him to play this season may hold some weight. Both tex and grandy have tweeted about their injuries, no F bombs were dropped. It seems like Cashman didn't want the fans to know of his status. All year we have gotten info on Jeter, arods reports have always been "allstar break". Your thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:41 PM)

Well, if I didn;t think there was some validity to it I wouldn;t have written the story. Still, the Yankees specific objection to A-Rod's tweet was that he was procliaming something his doctor had no jurisdictipon over. The Yankees are very strict n chain-of-commad protocols. tex and Grandy tweeted about taking BP and the like; neither said they had been "cleared" to play. There's the difference, I think

Caramrod (NY)

Is Hughes pitching for his rotation spot today?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:42 PM)

Girardi said no this morning, but we'll see what he says after the game if Hughes stinks it up again

Enrique (Miami Beach, FL)

What moves..if any, do you see the bombers doing before the deadline especially for some hitting given all these injuries especially Texeira done for the year?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:43 PM)

I think they will certainly be shopping for a first baseman now that they know Tex isn;t coming back, and maybe a third baseman, too, depending on what reports they get on a-Rod. Can't tell you specificially who they'll be targeting or who they might trade, but they do seem ot have some xtra pitchers, don;t they?

Larry (Dallas)

Does Brian Cashman realizes what he calls an "ARod distraction" was generated almost entirely by HIS REACTION to what was barely a story.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:45 PM)

I think he does. I think he's also a little fed-up with a contract he didn't sign off on, that he can't control, and with a player who acts as if he is a team unto himself. It may have been the wrong reaction, but it was a human reaction

Matt (NY)

Wally one question on ped's, i grew up a fan of the game. first sport to play watch and love. with the peds everywhere dont you think guys like A-rod and Braun should ultimately be banned from baseball especially if Pete Rose was banned for gambaling????

Wallace Matthews
  (12:47 PM)

That's a very tough question. First of all, I was never in favor of a lifetime ban for Rose because there's no evidence he ever tanked a game in order to win a bet. and I think he should be in the HoF. as for PED users, that is th ekind of cheating that I believe puts all numbers into question, and if you can;t trust the numbers, you can;t put a guy into HoF. However, lifetime ban seems excessive for what would be, technically, first offenses. repeated offenders should definitely be banned for life, however

Gary Sanchez (Bronx)

Do you think the Carlos Ruiz-Yankee trade rumors are legitimate or just casting a net, getting a feel for what asking price may be?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:48 PM)

I think a lot of nets are being cast in a lot of waters and it's too early yet to know what's a real nibble and what is just seaweed, if you know what I mean

Allan (Connecticut)

What is the current status for Francisco Cervelli? Any target date?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:49 PM)

Sometime after the break, altough no specifici date yet. He had a little more trouble bouncing back after the pin removal than they expected. I would say late July, but honestly, that's just a guess

Evan (NY)

How stupid is Arod? Of course the Yankees don't want him back, that is as clear as day as anyone with a brain. He should get the hint and ride off into the sunset and claim the hip injury is permanent and take the money and run. He's not going to break any records, not making the hall of fame, so why keep trotting out there and looking worse and worse.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:51 PM)

Well, don;t discount the natural competitiveness of a professional athlete, esp one like a-Rod. He may not be ready to throw the towel in on his career yet, although the scenario you lay out may be what ultimately happens

Steve (Jersey)

Without the hate for Arod, I listened to Andrew on MLB radio this AM. Do you believe the reports in the NY rags this morning about Arod retiring. Andrew said it was BS and Arod gets paid no matter what, so why??

Wallace Matthews
  (12:52 PM)

I don't believe them either, not yet, anyway. I know it's a dream scenario for everyone involved, esp the Yankees, who would be rid of A-Rod and get 80 percent of their money back. But from all I've heard, a-Rod still wants to play and thinks he can. And for the record, I don;t hate A-Rod. n fact, I probably am one of the 2 or 3 media guys who actually gets along with him

Matt (Newark, NJ)

Hi Wally. I have an issue. You and Andrew constantly make jokes about Joe Girardi calling him "Binder Boy" or "Joey Looseleaf". You make him out to be a fool of a manager when all he has done in 5 full seasons is taken the team to the playoffs 4 times, including 3 division titles and won the World Series in 2009.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:54 PM)

I'm not sure what your question is but rest assured, our stuff is meant in fun because of Girardi's well-known reliance on numbers and spray charts. But by no means do I think he is a bad manager or a fool. In fact I think this seaosn has been his finest managing job of all considering all the injuries the Yankees have had. And BTW, fans take tis much more seriously than the people involved. Girardi and I have an excellent relationship

Biaggio (NJ)

How is Michael Pineda going to fit into the Yankees pitching staff?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:55 PM)

Great question. Obviously, someone is going to have to go and off current performances, my candiadate woul dbe Hughes. But that can change over the next couple of weeks

Joel S. (Easton, PA)

If Hughes were to loose his rotation spot to a returning Pineda or improved Nova, would Yankees be best suited to use Hughes in the bullpen or trade him before the deadline for a right handed bat?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:56 PM)

Trade him. The bullpen is solid for the most part and Hughjes will be a FA this winter anyway

Greg (NY)

Could the Yanks find any trade value for Hughes & Joba given their poor performances?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:56 PM)

Absolutely. Live arms, youth, change of scenery, yada, yada, yada. Worse pitchers than them get multi-year deals all the time

Brady (NYC )

Do you think Mo's recent reliance on the 2-seamer is a reflection of the fact that his cutter is less effective than it used to be, or do you think he's incorporating it into his repetoire more often now because he's continuing to evolve as a pitcher, and wants to keep hitters even more off balance?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:57 PM)

That's an excellent question and rather than try to answer it, I'm going to ask Mo if I get the chance after today's game

Eric Javer (NYC)

who do you think is more likely to go before the trade deadline, joba or hughes?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:57 PM)

Maybe they'll ride off together

Kent (NYC)

What was Girardi thinking leaving in Wells and replacing him with Ichiro?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:58 PM)

As I wrote in the post-game notes last night, he was thinking the lineup would never get to Romine, and he was right

Steve (Jersey)

I apologize if this is a repeat, but what do you think about the NY rags saying Arod is going to retire and just wants $? Listened to Andrew on MLB radio earlier and he basically said it was nonsense, in that Arod gets the money regardless.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:58 PM)

i think I answered you already

Yankee Flyer (NH)

Wally, the Yanks have a surplus of starting pitching. Can they really afford to wait until the trading deadline to acquire a bat?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:59 PM)

Wellm they're still 7 games over .500 and in second place, so knowing Cashman as I do, I think he'll wait to the last minute, as he generally does

Dana (Fort Walton Beach, Fl)

It's been said many times this year, that Joe Girardi is "doing" his best "coaching" job as the manager of the NY Yankees this year, what is your take on this?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:59 PM)

I think he is doing an excellent job managing a depleted roster and keeping his team feeling positive about its chances until the injured guys come back

Anthony Gizzle (Charlotte NC)

Wally what in the world is up with this Arod/yankee drama?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:00 PM)

It's something that has been building for a long time, and my guess is that the Yankees see it as a wa of getting out of an onerous contract. It is fun to watch, isn;t it?

Derek (Tampa, Florida)

Do you think Alex will tweet again?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:00 PM)

Oh, I hope so. I hope Cashman starts tweeting, too

Greg (NY)

What are the odds that ARod never plays for the Yankees again? If he does return then should he DH only to protect his hips causing the team to find a 3rd baseman?

Wallace Matthews
  (1:01 PM)

I would say 50-50. I have one team source who is absolutely convinced he will never play again, but I think it's too early to say that. I;m sure he'll try to come back. Whether he is able to is another story

Larry (Delaware)

Some Philly media speculating that Phils would be sellers and Yankees could have an interest in Utley (for 1B), Michael Young for 1B-3B and Ruiz as an upgrade over Stewart. All three have expiring contracts, so they would be rentals. Your thoughts on a deal with the Phils ....

Wallace Matthews
  (1:02 PM)

Depends on if they want Joba or Phil. Not much else for the Yankees to offer.

Wallace Matthews
  (1:02 PM)

OK, guys, game time. Thanks for all the great questions. we'll do it again next week
