Fantasy Injuries with Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:03 PM)

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hard to believe we're almost halfway through the baseball season and that football training camps are around the corner. Injuries, of course, are ever present...

Johnny Sharp [via mobile]

Would gronk still be a good pick despite the back and forearm?

Stephania Bell
  (3:05 PM)

Johnny: All depends on where you're drafting him...and when your draft is. We're going to have much better info the closer it gets to the season. My guess right now is that he starts trg camp on the PUP, may be activated for start of season if doing well BUT not likely to play first few weeks. How much do you want to spend on that uncertainty??

James (NC)

My girl Stephania! When will Beachy be back? And will he jump right into the rotation? Would you advise holding onto him in fantasy leagues or going ahead and cutting the cord? Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:07 PM)

James: Didn't know I was your girl, but thanks, I think...Beachy close to rehab assignment but we know how that went last time (setback) so his return to the bigs all depends how this goes. I don't envision before late July. Even then, expect he's introduced a few innings at a time. For fantasy value? Might be hard to come by until very late (September) if at all.

Bobby (NY)

Haven't heard anything recently about Adam Eaton's return. Any inside info and what can we expect from him once he's back?

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

Bobby: He's DH-ing again but just like before, the big test is him getting into the outfield (last time that's when he aggravated the elbow). Biggest test for that UCL is throwing. I'm skeptical until we see him have success across several games where he has to throw hard. Put it this way. Don't think he returns before late July. And even then I'll be nervous - not about his hitting - but that if he throws hard the elbow will fail him.

Matt (Florida)

Any word on Gyorko's progress and return time?

Stephania Bell
  (3:12 PM)

Matt: Yesterday I wrote not to expect him before late in the week. Now it sounds (based on what Bud Black said Tuesday) that they think he's about a week away. They need him in a couple of game situations to see if he gets the tightness again.

Rob (State College)

Stephania! Rock Chalk! How much do you trust Han Ram's health? I love his production since he's been back but I'm leery of him right now. Should I trade while he's healthy and hot? Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Rob: Rock Chalk! It's hard to be totally confident after everything he's been through but he just said his body feels the best it has since 2009. Pretty dramatic declaration. He grimaced a little on a hard run the other night when he stretched that hamsting on a single but I haven't seen any letting up since. That's pretty encouraging. I'd probably make the trade while he's at his peak. Depends what you can get for him and your area of need. He's hitting as well as he has in the last few years. Not sure I want to bank on him keeping it up at that level after the ASB.

Kevin (Lincoln, NE)

Any chance ARod comes back this year and puts up meaningful numbers/playing time?

Stephania Bell
  (3:17 PM)

Kevin: I think so. He's starting rehab games now and they'll go slowly; it's not like he's playing full games out of the gate. Still think he's close to the max (20 days for position player) away from returning. And then, not likely every day play at first. But his only hope is performing well on the field. Think he's highly motivated to do that and the hip won't hold him up. If anything it's the long layoff from facing major league pitching that will be the most challenging.

Will (Fairfax)

Can you comment on Cueto's recurring lat problems? Is this likely a result of his delivery? Or something else?

Stephania Bell
  (3:19 PM)

Will: Hard to tease out a single factor as being responsible. The more important thing is that it clearly has not fully improved since it keeps tearing at same area. If he doesn't allow it to fully improve, then you worry about the cascade effect of affecting other more delicate areas (shoulder joint, elbow).

Dave (NY)

Please enlighten us on Evan Longoria!

Stephania Bell
  (3:21 PM)

Dave: he really wants to avoid DL. There was a chance he would pinch hit last night but apparently didn't. Really they're going by how he feels and sounds like he's gotten much better quickly BUT it's always the running that will be the big test so until he tries it in a game, hard to know how confident to be. Not usually a 3-5 day type injury and he's had a number of foot issues in the past. Think even if he comes back soon, definitely a risk to flare up down the road.

Matt (NYC)

Any word on Willingham's MRI? Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

Matt: No word yet. Definitely think this could be part of the reason he's struggled the way he has. Whatever the results, it sounds like the Twins are prepared to shut him down for a while, as in DL.

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

Matt: No word yet. Definitely think this could be part of the reason he's struggled the way he has. Whatever the results, it sounds like the Twins are prepared to shut him down for a while, as in DL.

arthur (chicago)

did braun swing today?

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Arthur: That was the plan but have not heard how it went. Wouldn't get too excited either way. While the team said he's feeling better, Braun sounded as if he planned to proceed cautiously, esp in light of what happened with his teammate Hart. The idea was for him to try to pick up a bat every few days to test the thumb. Considering last week he still couldn't grip it, I'm not expecting it to be suddenly fantastic. Don't expect him back before ASB.

Brandon (Working)

Is the Price right for your starting lineup tonight?

Stephania Bell
  (3:28 PM)

Brandon: Well, he's active. And he certainly looked good in his last outing. But I still have my reservations. Just think the diagnosis was always a little vague. Not as concerned about tonight's start as I am about how he's feeling in a month.

Ned (AL)

Should we expect Everth Cabrera to be off and running (literally) once he comes back from the DL?

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Ned; don't think they'll bring him back before they're confident he's ready to steal. Only a couple rehab games planned though so I wonder how many opportunities he'll get. Always be nervous about a guy returning from hamstring injury until he's been back without incident for 2-3 weeks.

Tom (CT)

Clay Buchholz had an MRI that showed inflammation. This is good right? Just needs 2-3 weeks of rest?

Stephania Bell
  (3:30 PM)

Tom: Well, it's being presented that way. I don't think shoulder bursitis accounts for symptoms up in his neck (which is where his problems have been the last few weeks). Not sure this is all there is to it.

Charlie (LA)

Do you believe TULO will keep healthy once he comes back? Should I be selling instead? Gracias!

Stephania Bell
  (3:32 PM)

Charlie: No reason to think otherwise. He had been doing much, much better as far as the leg/groin area. Was seeing some controlled days off, etc to continue to protect the area so really don't expect that to be an issue once he returns. And the rib, once healed, should not be a problem. So, I actually like him for the second half of the season.

Jake (CA)

Do you think Chase Headley's still feeling the effects of his thumb injury? Certainly hasn't looked like himself this year...

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

Jake: He actually had some good games when he came back initially so hard to blame everything on the thumb. Then his calf was bothering him the early part of this month. Not sure how much that was a factor vs him just struggling. Might improve later this month when get Gyorko, Cabrera back.

Brandon (RI)

Any inside info on Trout's hamstring? You better not meet him in person!

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

Brandon: No inside info. Expect him back today. And I haven't met him...yet.

John (VA)

Read that Peavey was throwing a bullpen session, have you heard anything on him returning before ASB, or likely after?

Stephania Bell
  (3:38 PM)

John: Was expected to throw a session again today. Sounds like he's progressing through the throwing program. No rib pain with downhill throwing thus far which is a good sign. Still has to get into some rehab games. Looks like just post-ASB would be the time to expect him.

Clark K (Metropolis)

Hi Stephania. What's the latest scoop on MICHAEL MORSE? I haven't heard much on him lately.

Stephania Bell
  (3:40 PM)

Clark: I think given how long the quad was bothering him before he ultimately went on the DL, I expect him to be out more than the 15 days. When guys are primarily rehabbing and not out running and doing baseball activities, we don't hear much. So I imagine we'll hear more when he picks it up a notch, maybe in the next week.

Ben (Charlotte)

how's Anibal Sanchez looking?

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

Ben: Well, he was looking pretty good in that he was making a rehab start but then he took a liner to his leg and reportedly was in a fair amount of pain. Whether that's a day or two and no big deal or something more is not clear yet. If we're talking about his shoulder, sounds like he's progressing back from this injury but I can't overlook his extensive shoulder history. Hard to be confident for rest of season.

Bruce (Gotham)

Any news on Alex Cobb's progress?

Stephania Bell
  (3:44 PM)

Bruce: Lots of folks asking about Cobb and certiainly everyone concerned about his welfare. He recently said he expects to pitch again this season but there are some targets he will need to meet, the most obvious being in recovery of his head injury. He has resumed some arm strengthening exercises but he's quite a ways from actual pitching.

Peter P. (Daily Bugle)

Will Darren McFadden be 100% come start of the season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:46 PM)

Peter: This is fun to think about. No reason why he shouldn't be. The problem for McFadden has always been making it through an entire season. So yes, I expect him to be 100%. But based on history, I don't see him playing in 100% of games.

David (Chicago)

Big time Cubs fan, excited to see trades. Any news on Scott Baker's recovery?

Stephania Bell
  (3:49 PM)

David: It's nice for the Cubs to make some moves. Fun for the fans in the second half. And since I'll be heading to a Cubs game or two in a couple weeks, I'm excited too. As far as Baker, he's back on the throwing program after being shut diwn a while ago when he developed soreness. Still at the sim game level so has a ways to go before there's the prospect of a return. But the Cubs might have him for a month or two late in the season.

John (Michigan)

Any concern over Encarnacion getting scratched due to hamstring tightness yesterday?

Stephania Bell
  (3:50 PM)

John: Always concern when it's a hammie. I would expect him to be out a few days at least but no word on a DL move, at least not yet.

Keanu (Honolulu)

Hi Stephania, who are you more confident about for rest of season: Kemp or Tulo?

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Keanu: tulo. For reasons I said before. But I still like Kemp second half.

Ron (WV)

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

Ron: I think the Rockies are/were hoping to have him back in lineup today after giving him some days off to rest the hand. If he doesn't make it back tonight, expect a move to the DL because it has just been lingering longer than hoped.

Derrick (Garden City)

Hello Stephania, when should we reasonably expect to see Cueto again and would you consider dropping him if you were pressed for space?

Stephania Bell
  (3:55 PM)

Derrick: I would drop him based on what we heard from the team's athletic trainer - that they expect this will be an issue for him the rest of the season. In other words, they're going to go slower this time, try to get him back, hope he holds up with good outings in between but are resigned to the fact it could be a problem going forward.

John (Boston)

What's up with Adam Lind?

Stephania Bell
  (3:56 PM)

John: Day to day with a sore back. Don't get the impression it's a major concern. At least not yet.

Dan (Boston)

RA Dickey seems to be "recovered" from whatever neck/shoulder problems he had. Do you have any thoughts about this? Thanks.

Stephania Bell
  (3:57 PM)

Dan: Not convinced he's fully recovered but he does seem improved. Spine problems like that don't tend to disappear but all you can go by is function. And right now, he's functioning pretty well. But I suspect we have not heard the last of this this year.

Jim (california)

What is Grandersons status? How long should it take him to regain the strength to grip so he can start rehad?

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

Jim: I imagine part of the issue is stiffness in the area following the surgery. If he can't close his hand well, he'll struggle to grip the bat properly. It will come - and he's certainly hardworking enough that I don't doubt he gets it back - it's just slow. He did add playing catch Monday so he's doing more activity but the grip remains an issue. Without seeing just how close he is, hard to tell how long it will take him.

Mike (WI)

Has anyone ever suggested your chats be on Mondays, where it might be more beneficial to ask questions for those in weekly leagues?

Stephania Bell
  (4:03 PM)

Mike: that's why I do the update blog on Monday. Usually posts before first evening games. Chats Tuesday are the standing time for me and work with football schedules too. Thanks for asking though.

Stephania Bell
  (4:04 PM)

Time for me to run folks!! Thanks for coming. This week with the holiday Thursday, I'll be joining the 06010 podcast tomorrow (Wednesday)! If you have other questions, please post on Twitter: @Stephania_ESPN
