Hey gang. Hope everyone is planning a great 4th with some backyard grillin, fireworks watchin or whatever floats your boat. Here's our Turn 4 answers this week on some hot topics - Is Brad K in trouble? Is JJ right on restarts? Should Kurt have been penalized at Kentucky? tinyurl.com/mpe7ob9
How much (if any) of Keselowski's struggles this year are related to the manufacturer change? How big an impact is a manufacturer change to a team?
Excellent question Chester. The Penske folks will say not at al, but I disagree. I don't know how much of a factor, but I have to believe it's been part of it. It was a huge change to not only change manufacturers, but stop building their own engines.
Will we ever see 3 or 6 in nascars top series again?
Yes and yes. You may see the 3 as soon as next year if Childress feels Austin Dillon is ready to move up to Cup.
Does Joey Logano's current streak of Top Ten's make the #2 team's struggles even more concerning?
Just the opposite. It's show the 2 that things can turn around if they get some things to go their way. And even though I think the manufacturer changes has hurt Brad a little, the switch to Penske has been great for Joey. Also, nothing Brad could do about what happened at Kentucky, a way too aggressive move by Kurt early in the race.
Best tweet of the weekend.@eddiegossage: I've had enough of you @kylepetty. I want more sappy compliments & less honest criticism from my NASCAR announcers. #DontCallItLikeYouSeeIt.
Eddie and Kyle have been very close friends for 30 years. They're practically brothers.
Should there be a penalty for passing the pace car under caution?
Bowyer thought so, but I didn't see any need for a penalty there. In general, I think the fewer penalties called the better.
Any Word on Dodge getting back in the sport? Those Chargers they develpoed for this season were beautiful!
I agree Clint. I thought they were the best-looking Gen 6 car. I hope Dodge returns and I think they will, but it may be two or three years down the road. They won't do it until they can get a quality team to come on board.
Hi Terry,It's house cleaning time at SHR. To me it's less Addington and more on the engineers and car chiefs. Hear any rumblings?
These are the kind or rumors that make Smoke crazy. He says no, but he's said no on things like this in the past only to make a change later. Nothing will happen until after this season. A lot of things could change them with Harvick coming on board. We'll see.
Can you put 3 numbers on a race car? It'd be cool to see a 007 car.
That would be awesome. With Sean Connery and Goldfinger facing off on the hood.
For both Nationwide and Sprint Cup this weekend at Daytona, will NASCAR say something about if the race comes down to a GWC finish and to prevent another nasty crash like in February?
No. The catch fencing and the gate area have been dramatically improved since the Larson crash in February. And it's a safe bet at least one of the races will have a GWC and a crazy late wreck.
Dale Jr. has finished 2nd in 3 of the last 4 Daytona 500's, but he has been mediocre at the July race. Does he continue that trend or have a storng run Saturday and contend for the Win?
I expect him to have a good run with a shot at winning. But let's face it. Almost anyone has a chance to win at the plate races. Regan Smith was top 10 at both plate races this year. McDowell and Yeley finished in the top 10 at the Daytona 500 and teammates Ragan and Gilliland were 1-2 at Dega. That's what makes these plate races so much fun.
You got to pick one driver for Daytona, who is it?
You probably won't like my answer. Jimmie Johnson. He won the 500 in February and finished fourth at Dega.
Granted it wouldn't have let Nascar get the race in on Sat night but why wasn't the Air Titan at Kentucky? All this hype from nascar about it and how it saved 'Dega, seems like they would have it everywhere. Or do they only take it to ISC tracks and charge SMI to take it?
You hit the nail on the head Chris. A speedway has to pat for the privilege of the Air Titan being at the track. And it ain't cheap. I hear somewhere around $80,000.
Do you expect Danica to challenge for the pole position and the win again at Daytona this weekend?
Oh Chris, you love to stir the pot with DP trolling. Sure, she could win the pole and the race. But almost anyone in the field could win it.
Do you think Kyle Petty cross the line on what he said about Danica?
Yes I did Jeremy. Look, I think Kyle is an excellent TV analyst and I always enjoyed talking to him. He is a genuinely nice guy. But I thought this comment was unfair. Look, Danica isn't racing well this season. Everyone see that. She has a long way to go to become a quality Cup driver, and she may never get there. Who knows? But to say she isn't a race car driver is absurd. She finished in the top 10 in the Indy 500 six times. Trust me on this, anyone who can do that is a racer.
Folks who bag on Pocono should watch the IndyCar race this weekend. Seeing those guys top out at 230-240mph on the front stretch will give ya a whole new perspective on the Tricky Triangle.
I can't wait Neal. I think it will be a hoot to watch. Pocono is similar to Indy, which was the best race of the season in any series, so this race could be something special.
Hey Terry, I am a huge AJ Allmendinger fan and I know my view may be a bit skewed here, but with his runs in underfunded equipment this year and his Nationwide win, do you see him ever getting another shot in a Marquee ride?
I'm not sure about a marquee ride, but he's going to get a decent full-time ride somewhere, whether it be IndyCar or NASCAR. I'm truly happy for AJ. He made a mistake, he was deeply regretful, he did all the right things to get back and now he's having success. That's a great story for a good guy.
Who do you think wins first, Junior or his niece in gokarts?
Now that's cold Jake. And his niece already has won several times. She a very polished young lady with two great parents. She also loves her uncle and listens to him a lot of racing things.
I'm certain that the Truck Series race at Eldora will be a resounding success. With that said, is there any chance that Cup could ever return to dirt?
There's a chance, sure. Just like there's a chance I will be in the first manned-mission to Mars.
I just went through all the current RFR, EGR, Hendrick, JGR, Penske, RCR, MWR drivers and not a single one of them has started their career with as long of a streak without a top 10 as Ricky Stenhouse Jr has.
Andy you must be an auditor. I admit I've been a little surprised that Ricky hasn't performed better this season.
Are you lookin forward to being in Daytona this weekend? It would be kewl to be there for the 4th. Fireworks and party on the beach man!
I'll be watching fireworks over Puget Sound this year Timothy. My buddy Ed Hinton is covering the race for us this time. But I'll be on our chat Saturday night.
Terry, how come people don't give Jr credit? He took a damaged car that he did nothing wrong to get damaged and brought home a great 12th place. Other drivers (I wont name names but we know who they are) would whine about it and slap the wall and quit.
I'm with ya Jake. I thought the whole 88 team did a nice job with a damaged car. It makes a big difference at a track like Kentucky to have the splitter raised up an inch or two like it was on the 88. It makes the car very difficult to drive fast.
Hey Terry? Loved the mountain pic. How's everything in the sound? Do you believe Jr about going back to race the trucks or NW someday or do you think he will become a full time owner when all is said and done?
I don't see Jr. racing in the lower series once his Cup days are done. But I think JR Motorsports will be a Cup team in the future. And it's beautiful here this time of year.
Hi, Terry. For awhile now, you always say that NASCAR should build tracks in Denver, Seattle, to more bigger cities. But shouldn't they go where the fans are? I dont Nascar peaking more than it has, being 2nd in tv ratings behind the NFL, and i'm not sure that those cities are racing fans..I think places like Ohio, or Indiana or would be healthier for the sport over the long haul.
I disagree Paul. Believe me, there are plenty of NASCAR fans in the Pac Northwest, as I'm sure there are in the Rockies. But NASCAR already has a lot a races in that area _ Indy, 2 at Michigan, Chicago, Kentucky. However, I would like to see NASCAR add Iowa to the Cup schedule and take a race away from a track that has two races.
Terry, if you had to bet the mortgage on one current driver to win you a race without knowing where the race is going to be held, who would you pick and why?
Fun question. Without knowing the track, it's hard to choose. What if it was a road course? But by your rules, I would have to go with the man who has won more than anyone else in recent years _ JJ.
Which driver gives the best interviews?
Bowyer hands down these days. That guy has become a quote machine.
Hey Terry, that was a troll imitating us. Anyway, what about this talk of Carl Edwards going to Penske to run a 3rd car?
Not gonna happen.
I was amazed they got the 16 back on the track after that crash. That car was tore up. How many points did he gain by going back out?
I said the same thing Bill when the car came back on the track. I could not believe the engine still was usable. It looks like the entire front end of the car was destroyed, and it burst into flames after the collision. I've never a car take a hit like that and return to the race. He finished 34th, so I think he gained about seven or eight points by returning.
Is there any chance of NASCAR teaming up with a corp sponsor to bring back the 4 crown jewel races like we had with the NO bull when Winston sponsored it. The Daytona 500, Coke 600, Night Race at Bristol??? Need a 4th... It might also help with filling the empty seats if people know that this is a crown jewel event
It's not a bad idea and could happen in the future. The fourth probably would be the Brickyard. One Dega race wouldn't be a bad choice.
I can't imagine having someone sending me a email or tweet wanting me to die in a race car. How do drivers react when they see such horrible things?
They ignore it Scott. People do crazy things on social media. Danica has over a million twitter followers.
Some of you ESPN collegues have penciled in #78 as a favorite to win Sat. night. Are you picking #Outlaw too?
No, but it wouldn't surprise me. Picking a driver to win at Daytona is almost like a picking the one card out of a deck. It's just a wild guess.
Terry, would you take a cup championship or 50 NW wins as a cup driver?
I think you know the answer to that Bernie. Anyone would take a Cup title over minor league wins.
Between Biffle and Edwards, who do you think will be the first to discontinue racing with Roush? (either new deal with another team, or retirement?)
Probably Carl, but you never know. Drivers go wherever they have the best deal. It's business.
What will it take to get the Southern 500 back to Labor day weekend and letting the lady in black earn her true nickname of being too tough to tame
It seems like an easy enough swap to me to two flip-flop Atlanta and Darlington.
Isnt Rowdy about due for another W?
Are you going to get a chance to cover any of the NHRA races on the Western Swing?
Probably only the Seattle event Jack. Pacific Raceways is a beautiful setting here. The NHRA also always has a Thursday media luncheon at the Space Needle.
When will we see the 24 in Victory Lane?
Maybe Saturday night. If not, Gordon will win somewhere this year.
How cool would it be if they took the track specs for Rockingham and used that for a possible track in the Denver region?
That's kind of the idea Matt, although it's a little more the track specs at Iowa or Richmond. The news tracks were going to be a little less than a mile with limited banking.
Years from now, when we look back at the careers of Johnson and Gordon, who will we say was better?
Johnson. Both rank among the all-time greats, but I think JJ is far better than most people think.
Is Happy second guessing his decision to leave??
Not in the slightest. What is happening now and what happens next year are two completely different things.
Which driver do you think commands the most respect in the garage among other drivers?
Where do you watch the fireworks Terry? Our favorite is at Gasworks park, our family tradition. Have a very blessed holiday with your loved ones!
I usually watch the fireworks from a hill in Old Town overlooking Commencement Bay, but I've also done it on a boat in Lake Union. Great stuff at either location.
Does the 11 car make the chase?
Not happening now, and I was the guy who said at Pocono that he could do it.
will Jr.'s sponsor be announced this weekend?
Maybe, but that might happen at Indy later this month.
Question, no answer on "most respect"?
I'd say Gordon. Jeff Burton also is highly respected, as is Mark Martin.
Would you like to see a road course race in the chase?
Absolutely. That needs to happen and Sonoma is the place to do it.
Gotta run folks. Great chat today. I hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July holiday. Peace.
