Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric, we've got a full hour to discuss baseball and football and as always I thank you for your time and interest... so here we go!

Ben (Atlanta)

Are you as happy as I am that Hosmer seems to be realizing some of his skill set?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

Obviously, as one of the leaders of the Hosmer fan club for fantasy owners, it's nice to see him realizing his potential. Guy should be hitting 25 home runs with a strong batting average and 15 steals. I'm almost there...

Ben (Atlanta)

Football question. Context: 14-team, .5PPR, 3-keepers kept at round drafted and move up one round each year.Choose 3:CJ Spiller (6th)Randall Cobb (7th)DeMarco Murray (14th)Colin Kaepernik (15th)

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

Well, Spiller and Cobb are obvious. Good for you there. In general I would say ditch the QB and take the running back, and when healthy Murray is a good player. But he's so rarely healthy. Ugh, I'd still keep him and find the QB later.

Bill (TX)

Keeper league. Would you rather have your SS/2B combo be Kipnis/Segura or Cano/Hanley??

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

Wow, both are excellent. I'd take the Cano/Hanley side, though. I see Segura slowing down quickly, and while I don't think Kipnis will struggle after the break like 2012, we know Cano is a monster and Hanley is a 20/20 guy.

Alan (White Plains)

As you noted this morning, it;'s early for LoMo, but take him over Loney ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

Yes, I have little expectations that Loney hits .300 and continues his power pace. Of course, Morrison probably can't stay healthy, but certainly he has the upside offensively.

Mike (San Diego)

I just picked up Raul Ibanez to replace Josh Willingham. Why do I feel like I need to shower after that?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

You shouldn't. Raul has 20 home runs! Good for the old guys! Seems to me he just tries to pull everything and even if he hits .250, so what, he's well on his way to 35 blasts. It's not really a fluke, either.

Brandon (East Northport)

Traded Puig for Pujols. Now I regret it. Can you give me a ROS comparison of the two please.

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

Well of course anyone that dealt Puig away will feel like they lost the trade. He was fantasy's TOP player over the past 30 days. Look, there's been confusion on my take on Puig; me saying sell high is not an indictment of his ability. He does look awesome, better than I expected. Would I have dealt him for Pujols after one or two weeks? Yeah, probably. Would I today. Probably not. He looks special. I don't think we should be beating ourselves up - or out analysts! - for not projecting the best month ever by a rookie. Nobody saw this. That said, a .280 guy with potential for 25 homers and 25 steals over 500 at-bats is really nice. Albert can't do that. He can end up at 30-100-.270 though, so it's not a total loss.

Matt (Florida)

Machado appears to be the real deal, right? Any hints that we need to get out while we can (non-keeper)?

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

No hints. Might be a first-rounder in 2014, actually.

A Puig of his own (LA)

Eric - I've followed you for about 4 years and I've gotta say I've been especially impressed with your work over the last year or so. I sort of pegged you as a guy who was stubborn and preferred to make "safe" decisions rather than seek upside. But you've changed my opinion lately. Keep up the good work.

Eric Karabell
  (11:11 AM)

Thank you! I might be cautious in how I see things, but hey, I've got Puig on a few teams, too! Always try the upside if you've got room.

Stephen (Los Angeles)

Is JJ Putz toast, or does he really just need to "rebuild his arm strength?" Should I just drop him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

What a joke Gibson has been this week, from intentionally walking John Buck more than once to cost his team a game it should have won to giving up on Putz after one outing that wasn't bad at all. I can see the "arm strength" angle but talk about not having a clue. Heath Bell is awful. Lefties salivate at facing him. Not saying Putz or David Hernandez is great, but Bell is not good. I'd keep Putz owned a bit longer, because he's getting save chances soon, if healthy.

Stephen (Los Angeles)

How can you say that "nobody saw this" with Puig? Isn't the fact that Puig-for-Pujols trades exist at all proof positive that plenty of people saw this?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

If you think you knew Puig would hit .440 after 30 games, then I don't buy it. Nobody saw this. If the Dodgers did, Puig would have made the team in April. It's an amazing run, and maybe he is this awesome and Trout-like, but c'mon.

Steve (FL)

Hi Eric, is Leonys Martin legit? He has been picked up in 66% of leagues lately and has a steal in 5 straight games...

Eric Karabell
  (11:16 AM)

He is legit. I talked to him in March and Ron Washington about him and got the impression he still wasn't quite ready for the majors, and it showed in April. Now he looks terrific. Legit!

Todd (Nashville)

EK: Football: Are you on board with SJackson and Amondola having big years with new clubs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

Sorry, I know all the reasons why I should be on board, but I'm not. One is old, the other is brittle. To me that doesn't change.

Tyler (Chicago)

Is V-Mart hopeless? Picked up Rosario and really hate having 2 catchers rostered. Think it's safe to say buh bye to Victor?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Not really. Took more walks than Ks in June, has batting average and RBI upside, I'd try to keep him. That said, I do like Rosario better.

Dave (NYC)

FOOTBALL! Who would you draft first: SJax or MJD

Eric Karabell
  (11:19 AM)

Jones-Drew for me. But I'm probably in the minority. I'm the guy that looks at last year's rankings and tries to figure out what went wrong, and certainly doesn't forget why we liked certain players. If healthy MJD is really good...

Alex (New York)

Would you feel safe starting Rizzo everyday at 1b in 10-team league or at a position at 1b do you find him too inconsistent and would you try to upgrade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

He seems safe to me. In a roto league doesn't matter if he's not consistent. In h2h more of a problem, but he's productive enough.

Roger (New Hampshire)

Stream Feldman today @ChiSox?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

I don't see Feldman's value dropping because of the trade. Sure, the divisions are vastly different, but he's a different pitcher now. His ERA was gonna regress some anyway, but having Machado/Hardy helps, too.

Alex (New York)

Han-Ram and Jacob Turner for Ryan Zimmerman. Yes or no?

Eric Karabell
  (11:22 AM)

No way. I'd rather own Ramirez than Zimmerman. Middle infielder that went 20/20 last year versus guy with no shoulder...

Mike (FLA)

I'm in a football Auction Dynasty league with no trading allowed and have Stafford $17 and Kaepernick $7 only taking up an 1/8 of my salary but both have the same bye week.

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

I'd consider keeping both and moving one later when a desperate owner realizes his No. 1 guy is Joe Flacco. It's about building a team, and those prices are solid. Depends what else you have of course...

dan (charleston, sc)

Hey Ek,Nervous about Harvey. In first place for the first time in years, and really want to win this league. Do I trade or just Hope the mets give him a long leash?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

The innings limit is so overrated. Yes, it's possible Harvey is shut down mid-September. I'll take the next two months of awesomeness and worry about mid-September if my team is still in the race. People do crazy things when they hear of innings limits, selling low, but I want my team to matter in September, and that is the one month it's easiest to find waiver wire help because half your league is concentrating on fantasy football only.

Jeremy (Orlando) [via mobile]

What is the likelihood that we see the 'real' Verlander for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

Might not resume top-3 overall pitcher status, but I have few concerns. I'd still trade for him and expect he makes a run at the top 20.

Doc Terminus (Passamaquoddy)

RE: Harvey - what if I'm in first place and KNOW I'll make the playoffs? Makes more sense to trade him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

You know you're in as of the first week of July? I'd keep him still. Unless you get Kershaw or Wainwright or some other guarantee.

Trace (Austin)

No talk about Homer? Is he firmly in top 20 SP for ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

He is among the top 10 starting pitchers in xFIP, which told us his 3.88 ERA was going to improve. It has. Been on our buy low list for more than a month.

Nate (Seattle)

Rajai Davis or Ichiro worth owning in a team team mixed league?? Looking for steals, I am pretty set on power.

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Davis could lead the majors in steals this year, so yeah, I'd say he's worth owning!

Billy (KC)

Follow up to Verlander question: Would you trade away Jordan Zimmerman in a QS league to get him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Yes, I would.

Alex (NYC)

After his gem yesterday, where do you rank Bailey for the rest of the season? Is he a top 30 starter? Top 20?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Not in my top 20, but in the top 30.

Chris (NYC)

For a guy with a "play it safe" reputation, you are really high on David Wilson in your rankings. As an owner keeping him, sell me on why the fumbling and Andre Brown won't torpedo his value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

He fumbled one time last year. Literally. So that's not a concern. Brown is, but Wilson will get the yards, probably 1,200 of them. Like I said, cautious but certainly open to upside when it makes sense. With Wilson it sure does.

Will (WV)

Your take on Vincent Brown as my #3 WR in a 12 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

I'm on board with that. Hmmm, I should blog about that!

Johnahan (Pappelbon)

Who takes over save for me when i am traded? Also other saves guys on other teams?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

You have no idea how much I hope that guy gets dealt. What a piece of work he is, on and off the field. I'd say it's Bastardo most likely, but watch an overwhelmed Charlie Manuel - it's not so easy when your players are old and bad, is it? - try to push Aumont into the role.

Ben (Atlanta)

Any truth to Terry Ryan's comments on Sano being a (possible) September call-up? Or is that just clever GM carrot-on-a-stick talk?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

I actually interviewed Sano Tuesday in Bristol. Nice kid. Certainly has power. But I doubt the Twins make a move on him this season. He's not on the 40-man roster. Perhaps September when they're far out of it, but not enough to make an impact in fantasy.

Will (SF)

Your thoughts on Matt Kemp? Will his power come back this year at all? And with his high K rate do you expect an average above .270? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

To me, the NL version of Josh Hamilton. I see no reason to buy low on either, though Kemp can steal another 15 bases if he wants to. The shoulder is not right. Or something.

Jon (Atlanta)

I know it was the Astros, but Price looked sharp. Top 5 the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Um, no. In my 10-15 range. That's still awfully good!

Randy (Miami)

TC has Josh Johnson ranked nicely compared to what he's actually done thus far, what's your take?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

I'm aboard with the upside.

Drew ((NY))

No way anyone saw this coming with Puig. lets get real. even Dodger fans are speechless......and they never shut up

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

I don't mind taking the heat from people that think I don't like Puig. Just trying to be realistic. The guy hit .440 over 30 games. That rarely happens. He is special. If I had told people after Puig was up for oone week that he'd hit .440 over the next month I would have been ripped for that!

DJ (PA)

Football Time! Better keeper - AP 2nd rd or J Charles 15th rd (I have pick 11 out of 12 in rd 1)???

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

Obviously Charles for the value. Wow.

Shane (Boston)

Football question: I know everyone is saying Adrian Peterson should be the first overall pick, but I feel like I really love Arian Foster. Would I be crazy to take him over Peterson?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

Not crazy at all. It's your team and let's be clear, the top pick is rarely the top guy at the end of the season. I wouldn't choose David Wilson first overall, but Foster is the consensus No. 2 guy...

Dave (Texas)

Of multi-positional guys, whom do you prefer in a standard roto: Matt Carpenter or Ben Zobrist?

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

Still Zobrist. Power and speed and he's done this for years. That said, I sure am glad I loaded my teams up with Carpenter this year. Didn't expect he'd be this good and score 120 runs!

David (Daytona Beach,Fla.)

If J.Kelly doesn't work out for Cards do we see Wacha/C.Martinez?

Eric Karabell
  (11:37 AM)

Joe Kelly is not the answer, even if he does pitch capably. Martinez is the future stud here.

Mike (Minneapolis)

Are you picking up Ike Davis if you need HRs? I have M. Moreland and J. Morneau, and Moreland's been terrible since he's been activated.

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

He sure has. Sure, I could see adding Davis for the power potential, but it's gonna be a rough ride.

dan (charleston, sc)

Your popular. One of the guys in my league just emailed me saying now he knows how I feel about Harvey. He lives in spain.

Eric Karabell
  (11:38 AM)

It's all about the four letters. ESPN. (Not PUIG).

Paul (PA)

What to do with J.Profar in a keeper league - Helpful this year, or just a prospect for next year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Doesn't look like he'll be breaking out in 2013. Just needs to play regularly, but of course the Rangers can't do that. I'll be recommending him greatly in 2014.

David (NY)

Will Francisco Rodriguez hold down the closer role or is he just being showcased for the trading deadline?

Eric Karabell
  (11:39 AM)

Both. Showcase but I doubt any team will pay much for someone like him.

Jim (Pittsburgh )

True or False: The Pirates will make the playoffs this year

Eric Karabell
  (11:40 AM)

Yes, this year they are in. Pittsburgh is an awesome city, and I'm personally happy for my pals there that good things are happening. I love that ballpark, can't wait to go back. The pitching is being stretched thin, but they'll get in.

Cubbies Bullpen ? (Chicago)

If Gregg is traded would you add Parker or you like a Walden/Bastardo better in NL only 8 team daily?

Eric Karabell
  (11:41 AM)

I think Parker is next in line. I don't think it's at all likely Papelbon is dealt, because the Phillies foolishly think they are contenders, and Kimbrel is not hurt to give Walden the chance.

Dennes Arias (Lawrence, MA)

How valuable would Rajai Davis be once Melky returns?

Eric Karabell
  (11:42 AM)

Davis always finds a way to accrue the stolen bases. He doesn't need 600 at-bats. And Melky is so bad defensively, he might not be an everyday player when he returns.

Eric (Albany)

Football Keeper! Shady Mccoy in the 2nd or Brandon Marshall in the 3rd?

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

McCoy. I have him in my late, late first round. Not expecting 20 touchdowns, but the guy is good and rumors of Bryce Brown hurting his value are ridiculous.

Jeff (MA)

Braun, he was supposed to swing a bat yesterday - any word.. Would you trade away either Puig or Dom Brown for him? Non-Keeper.

Eric Karabell
  (11:43 AM)

Braun should return right after the All-Star break. I'd definitely trade Dom Brown for him. Puig, probably not. Incredible rise for him, eh?

Paul (PA)

Do you see another huge second half coming for C.Headley?

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

Unfortunately not. He just looks awful at the plate. Probably injury related. Just because he's back hardly means he's healthy.

John (Austin)

When do you think Beachy joins the rotation, how do you think he does ROS, and who do you think gets sent to the pen? I've been stashing this guy ALL year...

Eric Karabell
  (11:44 AM)

I think Braves would like to drag this out a few more weeks, see if they can trade Maholm. When they can't, Medlen becomes Kimbrel's setup man. Beachy should be a 6-inning strikeout guy.

Corey (D.C.)

General fantasy football question. Has ESPN ever considered a Dynasty-only chat? Almost all the advice given is based on redraft and doesnt apply to dynasty.

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

Ask a dynasty question and if I see it, I will answer. I play in dynasty leagues. So does Tristan, Matthew, all of us!

Ben (Right behind you)

Would you trade Cole Hamels for Anibal Sanchez?

Eric Karabell
  (11:45 AM)

I would not. I don't trust Sanchez's shoulder.

Jake (Cleveland)

Would you keep Alex Cobb or drop for a healthy arm/bat?

Eric Karabell
  (11:46 AM)

My only concern is the Rays keep saying he'll return this year, which implies it's not happening in July or anytime soon. In shallow league, I'd drop. And he's great, so that's a shame.

Andrew (NJ)

FOOTBALL - Is Jimmy Graham that much more valuable now?

Eric Karabell
  (11:47 AM)

Why? Because of Hernandez? No, not at all. Graham is terrific, the top TE, but I've got him pegged for early round 4. Plenty of usable tight ends out there, and nobody is going to use one at flex with the preponderance of wide receivers.

Jay (The Bay)

If you could select any draft position in a 12 team league after the top 2, which one would you select this year in football?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

Three and four! I'm fine with Ray Rice and Lynch.

Joe (State College)

Who is a FMV starting pitcher for Matt Holiday?

Eric Karabell
  (11:48 AM)

Greinke? A guy outside the top-20 starting pitchers I suppose.

Mike (San Diego)

Aren't the people who think Headley is suddenly going to be a stud foolish? He may go 10/10 in HR and SB in the 2nd half, but anyone who can look up a player's HR/FB % can see last year was a fluke. He's not a 30 HR guy.

Eric Karabell
  (11:49 AM)

Shhhh...I'm trying to move him in a league....

Ian (Texas)

Why do you think Benoit won't keep the closer role in Detroit? If Papelbon is not going there, is there anyone better available for the Tigers to trade for?

Eric Karabell
  (11:50 AM)

I don't think the Tigers view him as the answer, and he's an extreme fly ball guy. Last year he allowed 14 home runs! If they wanted Benoit closing they wouldn't have messed with Rondon in March or Valverde in April. Just my opinion. And there will be closers out there. Tigers might deal for Cishek or Gregg or anyone else. Leyland probably thinks K-Rod is really good because he has 300 saves. I mean, this is the team that thought JOSE VALVERDE was going to be good.

Randy (Tha Dimas)

I'm not takin Doug Martin before pick 10. just sayin. too small, not convinced, sophmore year comin up. we will talk in a year from now

Eric Karabell
  (11:51 AM)

I'm not really arguing with you, but if you do that, who makes your top 10 running backs? That's my issue. I see about 6 running backs worthy of my top 10. And my first round is all running backs. The supply doesn't come close to equaling demand, unfortunately, and that's why Martin is in there.

Todd (SF)

So, would you drop Cobb to pick up Beachy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

No. No guarantees either way.

Bill (VA Beach)

Back to the Tigers, any chance they go with Rondon as their CL?

Eric Karabell
  (11:52 AM)

I think they want to, but doubt it happens in 2013.

Brian (Pittsburgh, PA)

Go Pirates!!! I am an owner of Cueto, Cobb, and Braun,... yet I am in first place! Which one of these guys returns the earliest? Are they all in danger of missing the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

I think Cueto and Braun return right after All-Star break. I hope Cobb does.

Enrico Palazzo (Chicago)

LA Dodgers traded for Marmol yesterday and just DFA'd him. Love it. International money transactions is the new thing, huh?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

They dealt for him and THEN looked at his numbers. Wise organization. Or not.

Don (NJ)

Do you think Jim Henderson gets the closer role back after the break?

Eric Karabell
  (11:53 AM)

I think it happens sooner than that.

James (Gainesville, FL)

Does your take on Kemp change in keeper leagues? Is he still a no-doubt keeper, and thus a good buy low in this case?

Eric Karabell
  (11:54 AM)

Yes, in keepers I still invest. Not too old. But clearly needs a healthy offseason.

Ryan (Orlando)

EK your thoughts on Henderson Alvarez? Worth an add in NL only or pass?

Eric Karabell
  (11:55 AM)

Isn't likely to win much or strike out 5 hitters per nine innings. Both are a big problem.

Tom (Bath)

Football: I can keep four of the following in a 1 qb, 2rb, 2wr, 1 te 12 team league: Spiller, Cobb, Cruz, Welker, DWilson, Forte. What say you?

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

Nice team. In order, Spiller, Forte, Wilson and then Cobb. I know you don't have a flex, but RBs get hurt, WR is deep.

Mike (San Diego)

You still holding out hope for Nick Swisher? I'm still rostering him in a 12 team league, but I'm tempted to just open that spot up for hitters who go on hot streaks.

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

I'd be patient. He always finishes with numbers.

Ben (Atlanta)

Talk about how great Jose Fernandez is.

Eric Karabell
  (11:56 AM)

He is great.

Matt (Cleveland)

FF Dynasty: Hopkins or Patterson in rookie draft?

Eric Karabell
  (11:57 AM)

I like Hopkins more for this season, and honestly, there are no guarantees after that. I'd go Hopkins.

Help (Please)

For the love of god will you please help me out - can I feel good about Erick Aybar's resurgence? ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:58 AM)

Really? Yes, you can feel good about Aybar now. Wish he'd run more though.

Davis (Asheville, NC)

Football question! I'm really intrigued by Montee Ball, but he seems to be projected to go fairly high in drafts. Is he a solid pick at his current ADP, or should I look elsewhere?

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

I think he's being a tad overrated, but then again, I think Reggie Bush is a good value pick. Don't be afraid to choose the older players. Ball should be fine, but I have concerns on that team.

Corey (D.C.)

Pick one of these WRs to stash on your bench for a couple years hoping one breaks out: Alshon, Michael Floyd, or Dobson.

Eric Karabell
  (11:59 AM)

Jeffery for this year for sure, but long-term prob Dobson.

Stephen (Los Angeles)

Rizzo for Machado ... good deal?

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Definitely.

Daniel (Chicago)

Is R. Davis more or less valuable than Michael Bourn moving forward? Seems Bourn isn't running as much...

Eric Karabell
  (12:00 PM)

Bourn is about the most obvious sell high guy there is since he's not close to what was expected.

Paul (Denver)

What's Howard's ROS outlook? Can he stay relatively healthy to produce? I trade Altuve for him and Parnell.

Eric Karabell
  (12:01 PM)

I'm so sorry.

Eric Karabell
  (12:02 PM)

OK, that is about all the time we have for today's chat session. I thank you, as always, for your love and attention and interest and wish you the best in your leagues, regardless of sport. Have a great day!
