What's up guys? Happy Wednesday and a happy Fourth to my fellow United Statesians. Looking forward to the 162 talk. Here we go.
Ok, lets get down to it. Silva or Weidman and why.
Silva. Because he's the best fighter in the world and Weidman is fighting his 10th pro fight. And because Silva is going to do nothing but dance and run around for the first 3 minutes, which is going to feel like 3 years to Weidman while the crowd boos and he's going to start thinking, "It's okay, don't do anything stupid. Do what you trained to do, you got this ... " And once you start thinking against AS, you're done.
do u think a fight between anderson and roy jones jr will ever materialize?is there still talk about shaq o neil coming over to mma?
No ... and no. Shaq is a fan, he hits mitts. That's about it. Only way Anderson and Roy fight is if they're both in their late 50s, early 60s someday and need money for some reason.
Yoo Brett, my boys Edgar and Weidman are taking it all on Sat. Your headlines need to read "Kingslayer" on Sunday morning!! Game of Thrones status!!
You know I have not seen a single episode of Games of Thrones? I feel like I'm really missing out on something here but I don't want to spend the money on the DVDs.
In the case Weidman beats Silva, where does Silva go from there?
Rematch or retirement. Dana said on Monday he'd obviously get an immediate rematch if he lost, regardless of how it happened. Weidman vs. Silva II, February 2014.
Brett, Im not to much interested in fighter pay, you know what your signing up for and the possible faults with it, but I was curious with you as an insider, have fighters told you pay they get, and is it really as bad as is being reported by the low level guys? Youll settle the issue for me.
The highest paid guys are pretty darn happy. Probably more money than they ever thought they'd make when they started in the sport. The lower level guys are struggling, no question about it. The fuel for this fire is not necessarily what each fighter makes, it's what cut of the UFC revenue goes to fighters ... and that's a question nobody has been able to answer completely because only the UFC knows.
What do you make of Matt Brown saying he would destroy GSP? Believe it or just something we should just ignore?
No way he believes he'd "destroy" GSP. Does he probably believe he could beat him if he has his best night? Probably. Brown had a little chip on his shoulder after his last performance. I I asked him something about the title and he was like, "That's what I want. Just because a bunch of reporters don't think I can do it doesn't mean I don't want to do it."
Where does Edgar go after winning tomorrow night. I think a fight with Faber at 140lbs would be great.
Catchweights don't work. The UFC doesn't like to do them. Nobody really gains anything out of them. So if it's against two aging veterans that's one thing, but two guys who could still be in title contention? No way that happens. Edgar will probably fight Swanson (or Siver) is my guess.
I agree a fight between Faber and Edgar would be fun though, just not realistic right now.
I'm thinking Cub has more ways to win the fight then Siver does (especially athletically), lets assume for a second he gets an impressive win what's next for him? Title Shot? #1 contender fight against Lamas perhaps?
I kind of think Lamas just chills and gets the next shot now. Aldo isn't moving to 155 after beating Zombie. No way. Pettis will get the next lightweight shot and Aldo will defend the belt. It's possible they have Cub and Lamas fight again, but Lamas already beat him ... so I'd say it's more likely Frankie fights Cub and Lamas gets his title shot.
How do you like the Bisping vs. Phillipou fight they rumored on UFC Tonight?
Makes sense. Not really a fight I'd mark on the calendar as must see stuff though.
What up Moto! Im not saying Weidman has no chance but who has he really beat? Anyone who'd give Silva half a fight? No. Exactly. People are saying he has a chance because of what Sonnen did. 2 point there. 1. Silva was clearly injured(see second fight) and still won might I add and 2. This dude aint The west Linn Gangsta Chael P Sonnen! Nobody brings that forward motion in your face wrestling that Sonnen does. Sure if Chris gets him on the floor he is better equipped but how in the hell is he getting him there?????
Me and you are sitting on neighboring bar stools, nodding our heads and agreeing with one another Marc. I totally agree. People are envisioning this fight like it's already on the ground. Chris doesn't go after guys like Chael does. He fights on the outside. He'll have to change that. He has to go after Silva and pressure him to take him down. Ducking under a left hook and shooting a single won't get Anderson down.
What round does Silva KO Weidman?
Two or three.
what are your thought on how the UFC is promoting Silva-Weidman? is having UFC fighters picking weidman the only way they can promote weidman?
Haha, that's an interesting point. It is weird that EVERY SINGLE fighter is picking Silva ... according to a UFC release. Meanwhile, I've seen other guys pick Silva on Twitter and in my own conversations with them. You're right. Sounds like conspiracy.
What up Okamoto? Hey man...what odds do you really give this Weidman guy? People keep trying to tell me that he's the next big thing, but I just haven't seen the proof in the pudding yet. Talk to me!
Weidman is real, real good. Saturday will be his 10th professional fight. He's going against the best fighter in the world. A guy who does things that seem physically impossible. I'd buy this fight, though. Just throwing that out there. If I didn't cover the sport and just watched from time to time, this is one I'd invest in.
I have been calling the upset for Weidman for nearly a year. This Saturday we finally get to see it happen. New Champ via D'arce choke in the 2nd rd.
Get out of here Feez.
Assuming Silva win on Sat, and Belfort get a second shot on the belt...If you are UFC, would you have the fight at Brazil, where two Brazilian MMA legends could easily fill a 100k seats stadium, or have the fight in US, where you get the "insurance" that Silva's legacy would not be tarnished by a fighter who is on TUE that would not be likely be granted in the states (assuming that Belfort need to be off TUE when training/ fighting Silva)??
2013, 'the changing of the guard" both Silva and GSP are facing young hungry studs that both have what it takes to be champion. What you think?
You can only really call it that if they both lose. But for sure, Silva/GSP/Jones all have fights you could see them losing. That hasn't happened in awhile.
Brett, Silva is one of the greatest of all time but I can't help but think about some of the competition he has faced at Middleweight. For instance I think his good friend Lyoto Machida could have been just as dominant at 185 and beaten everyone that Anderson has over this run, am I right or wrong in this thinking?
Yeah, it's a good point. At the end of the day, I don't think Machida is quite the fighter Silva is, but yeah, no Silva and I think Machida would have held the title. I also agree Silva has had a few defenses against weak competition, but that was just kind of the nature of his division. Nothing he can do about that.
135 days until GSP beats Hendricks. Just thought I'd let you know.
Let the countdown to Hendricks' knockout victory begin.
How close is Cub Swanson to a title shot, assuming he rolls through Siver? Maybe a fight with Lamas in an eliminator?
Yeah, one more away. If they book the Swanson/Lamas rematch, that's a No. 1 contender fight. If Lamas gets the shot, Swanson/Edgar becomes No. 1 contender. I gotta say, I don't give Oliveira even a small chance of beating Frankie, but Siver could beat Swanson. Swanson will probably stand with him because he's so confident in that area right now and Siver is a strong, counter puncher. I'm picking Swanson to win but I'd watch that one closely.
Brett, What is your view on the UFC setting matches of two Strikeforce imports against each other. For instance, Kennedy vs Gracie is a good match up. I would of liked to see these fighters up against other mid-tier UFC fighters on the roster. Also, with the waves Kennedy created regarding pay, if he gets submitted early do you think he will be released? Have a great fight week..
Thanks Deane ... ummm, I don't think Kennedy gets cut with a loss. He issued an apology. Whether you think he owed an apology in the first place or not, whatever, he issued one. His statements angered Dana, but not enough that he now has this personal vendetta against Tim. As far as the matchup, I agree it's a little more fun to see crossover SF vs. UFC fights, but this one made sense. I like it.
1) When can we expect RED INK? 2) What do you make of all the fighters picking Weidman to win?
RED INK! Will be posted tomorrow from what I'm told. Honestly, I don't think there is a conspiracy of fighters picking Chris. I am surprised so many are doing it though.
If Anderson defeats Weidman in devastating fashion what statement would he be sending to GSP and his camp?
I'm not sure. If I'm GSP and it happens, I'm going ... "Sooooo, yeah. I'm not fighting that guy." Looking forward to hitting Seattle later this month by the way. Always have a good time on those shows.
Hey Bret where does Dan Henderson go from here.Does he fight someone like Thiago Silva or Lil Nog?Not to kiss your a$$ but you have the most fun chats on espn and thank you for them
Appreciate that Dan ... and about Dan ... I'm not sure. His title days are over. Let's just call it what it is. Expecting him to now string off about 5 wins to get back in title contention isn't realistic. BEST CASE scenario, Jones leaves the division, Hendo knocks out back to back guys and maaaaayyyybe he's somewhat back in the conversation. You're still looking at about a year from when he'd actually fight for the belt, probably more. I think he takes one or two more ... then depends on what happens in those.
Who has more to loose in the Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Munoz fight? And if Boetsch wins, where would he go from here?
Haha are we just calling Hector and Mark the same guy now? They kinda are in some ways, I can go with that. More to lose, I'd say Hector Munoz. Expectations were always higher on him than Tim.
In order for Weidman to win this fight, he has to wrap his head around the idea that in order to get his hands on him and get him down, he's probably going to have to eat some punches. How he responds to his first failed takedown will determine how this fight goes. Prediction: Silva TKO round 3-4.
It's a very interesting fight because if he does get Anderson down, all bets are off. Anderson really did look fairly awful from his back against Chael. He did nothing. Like he wasn't even trying to escape. But I just don't think Chris is going to get him down. I think Anderson dominates.
Brett, with the subject of fighter's pay, I am still struggling why it should be an issue. As a fighter, you sign contract for the fight deal, you get in the cage, get paid as agreed, and potentially get bonus if your boss believe you did a great job. If you become more recognizable and win a few fights, you renegotiate for a better contract.Whatever your company made in revenue (in this case, UFC) should be outside of the equationAm I being too navie?
Yeah, I think so. I mean, I'm no historian but this kind of stuff goes back to the beginning of business. You can't make $100 and pay your employees $10 of it. Eventually, those employees are gonna get angry. Not saying that's the UFC split, but think about it that way. If your boss is driving around an Aston Martin and you can barely pay your rent, what are you going to say in an interview?
If Weidman does win do you see him being a dominate champ. How long will his reign last?
I mean ... my initial answer would be until the Silva rematch. If he really does end up just having Anderson's number, I could see him hanging on to it for a few fights but I don't see him as a Jon Jones/GSP kinda guy if that's what you're asking.
How surprised are you that a dude with 9 pro fights, coming off a 1 year layoff, is seemingly being picked by every fighter to beat the #1 P4P guy?
I think that question answers itself. Very.
Assuming there is no "superfight" next for Silva, what do you see next for him at 185? Vitor - been there done that. Bisping - if it happened years ago, fine - not interesting anymore. I think Rashad Evans would be last of big fights for Silva at 185.
Rashad can't cut to 185. In my mind, I've completely ruled it out. So much so, I'll be honest, I can't help but turn my audio recorder off when reporters ask about it. Rashad can't make it. I can see why you don't want Vitor again, but I think that's the call. Silva is either fighting GSP, Jones or Vitor next if he wins Saturday.
Do you think that the Heavyweight division is going to suffer if Dos Santos gets beat up like he did last fight in the rematch? It seems Cain doesn't have any legit challengers in the division
No doubt about it. Maybe people will keep tuning time and again in to see Cain take a guy down and elbow him to death, but the buzz around his fights wouldn't be too great.
After he KOs Weidman, will people finally start realizing that Silva would beat Jon Jones?
I don't think you can make the comparison ... Jones is way bigger than Weidman, we're talking probably 20 pounds of natural weight, he's a better striker, his takedowns are better ... I don't think we'll learn anything about Silva vs. Jones by watching Silva vs. Weidman.
You have to bank roll one fighter for the next five to ten years, and he can't currently be wearing a belt. Who do you pick?
10 years! That's a long time. Easy call for me, Rory MacDonald. He's inheriting that Canadian fan base and he's got that American Psycho personality casual fans will find interesting.
Who would be silva next realistice loss besides jon jones
I guess you'd have to say GSP. GSP, Jones or heavyweights are really the only guys beating Silva in my mind.
Assuming Weidman gets Silva down, do you think he can choke Silva out? His submissions against other fighters have been impressive. Weidman got Munoz in some very uncomfortable choke positions?
No doubt and that's where the interest is in this fight. Even though I feel very confident Silva wins this fight, if it goes to the ground man, anything can happen. Weidman can definitely submit Silva if he has time to work on top position.
Other than the main event and Frankie, which fight are you most looking forward to?
Swanson/Siver for sure. Honestly, I don't think Edgar/Oliveira produces a very entertaining fight. I enjoy watching Frankie compete regardless, but in terms of action? I think Frankie boxes him to a 30-27.
51 years old is the age of the oldest fighter who competed in the UFC can you name him? Also who if anyone can come close to reaching that again in this day and age of the UFC.
.... honestly I can't. Not Randy ... not sure. And I don't know, I kinda doubt that record ever gets broke.
Thoughts on the rumoured 25% of tix sold for 162, do they need to stack these cards? Lower price? It's intl fight week after, should be sold out!
Ticket sales have not been a home run for 162. I'm not sure the reason why. Maybe nobody knows who Chris Weidman is? Maybe the Las Vegas pool parties are calling. That's one that actually doesn't make a ton of sense to me. I can understand it not selling out immediately, but not it struggling this much.
Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones.... who will win???
(sigh) ... (staring at my keyboard) ... I hate to say it, Jon Jones.
Have you seen the UFC Q&A with Weidman? Very impressive young man, he is someone the UFC would like to see as their next MW champion. Give me your thought on CW as champion if he can pull this off.
Yeah, he's like a Frankie Edgar. Well spoken. Natural confidence. It's interesting because Frankie was never a big seller for the UFC but they loved him. Represents the brand well.
Are you attending the EXPO and if so what are your duties while there? Who are you most looking forward to seeing?
The Expo actually isn't that great of a deal for a reporter when it comes to getting interviews. The fighters are mobbed the entire time, signing autographs. I'll have better luck just hanging around the press area. I suppose I'll go out and mingle and sign a few autographs myself. I'm a pretty big deal, not sure if you guys know that.
Brett, when are you gonna make your picks? Surprisingly enough, you're beating your colleagues with 66% correct picks. The only one who has been better is Vegas with the favorites winning 67% of the time on the same fights.
Yeah? So I'm hanging with the oddsmakers on picks? I love it. I give my buddies UFC gambling advice from time to time and the T.J. Grant over Gray Maynard and Vitor Belfort over Luke Rockhold picks produced some good winners.
Assuming Silva retires without losing again, will he be remembered as the Babe Ruth of MMA? The first truly great fighter in the early stages of the sport.
I think it's more of a Michael Jordan than a Babe Ruth. The Ruth comparison might even be more accurate, but Silva has continued his dominance into the sort of "new era" of MMA. And if he beats Jon Jones or GSP in one of those fights before he retires, man, I'm not sure any fighter will ever be able to claim GOAT.
The Rousey vs. Tate rematch for the end of the year show, do you think they will add another title bout to the show? If so which belt would be on the line? (You get to be Joe Silva with this one)
Not completely sure. Because I'm assuming they'll have two title fights on the 20th anniversary card. Flyweights will be on one of those as a co-main event. I'm guessing 20th. From what I've been told, Dominick Cruz is in the gym working everyday with the goal of fighting once in 2013. Maybe he and Barao fight on the Rousey card.
Wouldnt it have been more deserving for the entire TUF 1 cast to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame? None of them including Griffin have the resume to justify it. As a whole they have Griffin-Bonnar 1, a champion, a slew of championship contenders and the iconic stance of pushing MMA into the mainstream.
Interesting proposal. They probably wouldn't want to admit that many guys at one time but that would be cool. Getting Diego, Koscheck, Florian all of them on the stage together? Not a bad idea.
what is your thoughts on steven seagal? does he help the sport in anyway of does he just take credit for things like the anderson front kick and the lyoto crane kick?
The second thing you said.
Who would win shaq or sonnen?
Shaq all the way.
I've heard that Ben Askren's next fight in Bellator is the last on his current contract. Can you see UFC making a bigger play for him than they did Alvarez? I think he could be another Sonnen type in UFC when it comes to promoting fights at welterweight.
Ehhhhh, really? I'd have to disagree. No, I don't think the UFC would go after Askren even half as hard as they pursued Eddie Alvarez. His fighting style if awful. He talks a little crap on Twitter no doubt, but it's not Chael Sonnen-level talk.
How do u think Munoz will perform with the long layoff? Am I the only one that likes Herman +190 or is the potless Herman no good?
I don't know if we've ever seen a potless Herman. The ruling is out on that one. I do like him over Gonzaga though ... and I expect Munoz to look good. I think he's finally healthy. Needs a win. I'd lay money on him, the odds are close right?
What is the coolest underdog moment in MMA you remember seeing? For me, I still get goosebumps when I see Forrest slap the RNC on Shogun.
Yeah, that is an awesome, awesome moment. Probably wouldn't be my final answer, but when I saw Mike Russow knock out our boy Todd Duffee in the third round after he'd been dominated the entire fight, it was like, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!" from press row. I'll never forget it.
Hey Brett, Thanks for the chat as always. Is there a guy or two who didn't even come close to living up to their potential? Not necessarily hype, but strictly on ability they just never capitalized.
I'm sure there is, definitely. We've been talking a lot about Roy Nelson, I would say Roy never became as good as he could have been. There are others, I feel like I've said them in previous chats ... for some reason they aren't coming to me today. B.J. Penn is always mentioned, but B.J. had a good career.
What were your initial thoughts on Jon Jones when he signed up for the title match against Shogun? Did you think he would be as dominant as he is now?
Yeah. The moment I really believed Jones was going to steamroll anybody was when he threw Brandon Vera in the first minute of that fight and then broke his orbital.
Who you got for Herman v Gonzaga? I think Herman via something BRUTAL!
Yeah, I could see Herman knocking him out. Herman is a weird, unpredictable guy though. Not an athlete I'd put money on.
Brett, last week you said Cain would be the favorite over Bones because of his size advantage, yet you have the smaller Silva as the favorite in a potential superfight with Jones. Seems a little inconsistent since Bones is in the conversation for GOAT, where as Cain is not...
No, Jones would be the favorite over Anderson. And I'm not saying Cain would be the favorite only because of size, his wrestling comes into play. We've never seen Jones on his back. And I think he naturally hits harder. Jones isn't known for onepunch knockout even in the light heavyweight division.
Have you been watching Fightmaster? Thoughts?
On the DVR. I will marathon it at some point. Previews looked good. You guys liking it?
Hey Brett, boxing Q if you don't mind. What's up with the drug testing for Bradley/Marquez? Bradley wants VADA, Marquez camp prefers USADA and now Arum comes out and says the NSAC with do the testing? Isn't the point of using a VADA or a USADA to make up for inadequate testing of the NSAC? Just looks real shady.
It does. Honestly, not a story I've been following too closely. My first question is why do the fighters prefer VADA or USADA anyway? If a fighter is making allegiances to a drug testing company, which is what VADA and USADA are ... why is that happening? The most transparent method of testing is to have the NSAC do it, but they don't have the funds to blood test regularly ... weird situation.
Yo Brett! It's the Stokester! I got my TRT and Monster Energy drinks all ready for Saturday night! Anderson Silva, brah!
Happy 4th of July to everyone! Who wins a hot dog eating contest among MMA fighters?
Joseph Benavidez. It's always the small guys who eat the most.
What's the end run for the UFC/MMA? Do they grow & get bigger thus getting included in the discussion of most popular sports? Does it stay at or near the current level? Does it regress
Keeps growing, but not as exponentially as before. Younger generations grow older with it, go to college, are willing to pay for the big fights. You'll see it in mainstream, but probably not on par with baseball, basketball, football. Question really is, how big does it grow globally?
Brett are Americans waiting and hoping desperately for a Weidman/Rockhold/Kennedy/Bader/Gustafson "brand" to be champion, is this what's going on with casual and 28+ crowd that grew up on Hughes/Chuck/Randy/Mir slice of pie? Your very intelligent you know where I am going with this and I don't think I far off
I'm trying to read what you're writing on this one Jay ... but you've lost me. No, I don't think American UFC fans are going to bed at night praying for a Weidman/Bader era ... and Gus is Swedish brotha.
In all your years covering MMA have you ever been starstruck by a fighter? if so who?
First time I was around Brock Lesnar and I'm not even a WWE fan. Actually, I know close to nothing about WWE. But he had such a large media group around him. His star power was off the charts. I wasn't like "struck" by him really, like intimidated, but it was this feeling of, Wow, this guy is incredibly famous.
People are saying Weidman can do the same thing Chael did in the first fight but I believe Silva was letting himself get taken down by Chael to submit him. Do you think people are underating Silva's takedown defense off that one fight?
No doubt about it. And maybe you're a little right about the sub thing but more than that I think Anderson was just injured.
Do you not consider Rory a threat ti A. Silva when talking about other contenders for MW belt?
Could be, but we're years away from that. Don't jump the gun too fast on Rory. He's no guarantee over Ellenberger this month.
I'm more excited for this fight than anything else that's been announced this year. Do you agree? GSP/Hendricks comes close
Yeah, I'm pretty excited for this one. The closer it's got and the more I've watched fights and analyzed it, the less of a chance I give Weidman and that has taken away from the buzz a little for me. But he's got a shot. I'm not saying he doesn't have a shot.
From what I've read, Bradley's camp prefer VADA because Marquez' S&C coach (Angel Heredia) has ties with USADA and Marquez camp prefers USADA because, well, Heredia has ties with USADA.Unfortunate that these questions even have to be asked.
Well there you go. If a fighter's camp has "ties" to one of the agencies, it should obviously rule it out.
Brett, do you see much fan crossover between the WNBA and the UFC?
You're an idiot Stoke, but I like you. Let's wrap it there. Thanks for the chat guys. Hit me on Twitter, @bokamotoESPN. Enjoy your BBQs and pool parties and what not and get on ESPN.com the night of the fights for live updates and chats just like this one. See ya!
