Hi guys! Thanks for stoppnig by. As always, all subjects answered. I will try to keep the book plugging to a minimum (fantasylifethebook.com for more info). Let's get to it!
Mr. Berry, If I am picking on the back end of round 1 in a 12 team league and the first 8/9 backs are off the board, do I reach for someone like Forte/Ridley/Jackson or suck it up and take Megatron? Thanks!
I'm a RB/EB guy, so I'd go Ridley in that instance. Like Jackson in ATL and Forte with Trestman quite a bit this year as well. But seriously, if you don't get a good #1 RB, you'll hate your team. Try a mock and see what happens.
Hi Matt, do you think BJ Upton will bounce back and have a good second half or do you think this is a lost year for him?
Can I pick somewhere in between? He'll be better than he has been - we've already seen some improvement - (4 HR / 4 SB in June) but he's not gonna be the guy you drafted. So I wouldn't say a "good" second half, but I would say a "useful" second half.
Yo', what's crackin', MB?
Hey Matt I'm a huge fan of yours! I've got your book already preordered I can't wait to read it! I'm the commissioner for a 10-team .5 PPR league with my best friends and I really think this is my year. I've done 5 or 6 mocks trying to figure out which pick would be the best for me. I've tried 1, 4, 6, and 9 so far. With the talent pool this year, where would you wanna draft? Also, do R.O.U.S.'s really exist?
Thanks. I think I'd like to be towards the end of the round this year in 10 team, PPR or standard
How do you feel about Lesean McCoy this season? I feel like last season was more an anomaly than the norm, but will he be losing some touches to Bryce Brown in Chip Kelly's offense?
Chip Kelly is gonna run the ball. Not worried about Brown - he'll get some touches but I expect a bounce back from McCoy, who's biggest issue last year before getting hurt was the scoring. The O Line will be better than it was last year and I expect more than the 5 TD
Hey Berry! Can't wait for the book! Who would you rather have at your middle infield spot the rest of the season, Eric Hosmer or Kyle Seager? Thanks and gig 'em!
If I need upside, I'm going Hosmer who finally seems to be getting where we expected him to be. If I just want steady production, it's Seager. Hosmer will be a roller coaster
Personally, I'd roll the dice with Hosmer
I'm a huge fan. Let me just say that last year I solely drafted off of your rankings and I had an awesome team. In a 12 team keeper league I got Brees, Gronkowski, Adrian Peterson, and Percy Harvin in that order. So thanks for that because despite injuries it worked out pretty well and I get to give up my 1st Round Pick to keep AP (hopefully I'll pull the 12 in the draft). This year I have to decide who to keep between givin up a 5th Round Pick for Pierre Garcon or a 13th Round Pick for Brandon Myers. What would you do?
Garcon. Myers is solid but really just a guy
More upside out of Vereen, M Ball or L Bell? Thanks.
Ball, because he has the best team and best path to playing time. Bell is the likely starter but they don't run as much (or as effectively) as DEN. Vereen will get some work but unless Rildey gets hurt, he's the #2 in NE. I like Vereen, espcially with everything NE has going on in theor passing game, but barring injury, he's behind the other two for me.
What are your thoughts on going RB/Jimmy Graham/RB this year?
No issue with it, especially if you are drafting late in the 2nd round and would have ot reach for a #2 RB. You get a clear cut advantage at TE and the difference in RB isn't THAT much of a drop off. I'm still going RB/RB in most cases, but if I didn't grab a RB in the 2nd round, that'd be the only guy I'd grab instead (unless we somehow knew Gronk was healthy and ready for week 1 and even then...)
Yu Darvish in exchange for Cespedes and Mike Minor...who says no?
The guy giving up Darvish. Cespedes is actually hurting your team with average and Darvish is SUCH an advantage in K's over everyone else it's hard to give that up unless you're getting a huge lift elsewhere.
Who will have a better PPR season, Jamaal Charles or Shady McCoy?
Charles. Gonna have a monster PPR year with Alex Smith and Andy Reid
Do you think people are undervaluing the role Reggie Bush will play in the Detroit offense? He may not get touchdowns, but I don't see how he can't be a top 5 RB in PPR for sure
Not sure about top 5 but definitely top 10
Who is your dark horse candidate to be the top scoring running back this year?
I mean, anyone in the top 10 could easily get there. I do like Ridley - keep in mind, no team scored more rushing TD's last year than NE (7th in rush yards) and I expect them to lean on run game even more.
What happened to Jim Henderson as closer? Worth keeping?
K Rod's been great - he's the guy going forward. Depends on how available saves are in your league, how deep. Certainly a chance he gets job back... but in a 10 team mix, I'd have no problem dropping him.
Price a top 5 pitcher ROS?
Not yet. Last night encouraging, but it was the Astros, you know?
Hey sexy how are u? Give me a call sometime
Right now? In my office? Wearing jeans and a shirt? Staring at a computer? About a 3.
Can Cutler be a viable #1 QB this year?
I like the potential of him in Trestman's offense but boy, I would NOT want him as my #1 QB in even a 16 team league. BAck-up with upside.
Do you believe that Larry Fitzgerald could vault himself back into the top 5 wide receivers this year. I was yes..yes sadly a Fitzgerald owner last year and while it was a wildly frustrating year for Larry Fitzgerald am I crazy for feeling very comfortable taking him around 30 this year?
Definitely. Palmer a huge upgrate at QB for them and Arians offense is a good fit here. They improved their O line and Palmer was 4th in the NFL in completion % last year while under duress.
Berry! Who is a likely candidate to take over a Closer role in the second half?
I could see the magic running out on Kevin Gregg (or him getting dealt) and newly acquired Pedro Strop getting gig. He's been bad this year but maybe he gets straightened out. Jose Cisnero in HOU if Veras gets dealt. Same with Gregerson and Street in SD or Pestano is Perez is dealt
Am i nuts for giving Doug Martin strong consideration for #1 overall?
Not at all. Look, AP had a ton of carries last year, so you could see him fall off. Hard to expect him to be better than last year, right? Foster is more TD dependent than people think - his YPC keeps going down and you've got Tate there. Same thing with Rice & Pierce - they're definitely giving Pierce more work this year. And Lynch has the legal issues to worry about plus the back and maybe they throew more with year 2 R Wilson and Harvin now. Martin, meanwhile, gets his 2 best O linemen back and most NFL players make the biggest leap from rookie year to year 2.I don't have him at 1 but it's definitely not nuts to take him there.
Give me a running back that will go late that will help my fantasy team this year.
Here's a bunch, in varying levels of "reach":Andre Brown, Chris Ivory, Shonn Greene (in a LenDale White type role), Joseph Randle, Danny Woodhead, Marcel Reese, LaMichael James, ...Gio Benard in PPR,
Good TE to nab late in the draft?
Think hate on Finley has gone too far. Jordan Cameron in CLE is interesting with NORV there now. And I really like Rob Housler in AZ? Palmer likes his TE (Myers 4th in TAR among TE) last year - Housler very athletic.
Whats your take on the Packers wr's? Cobb, Nelson, Jones??
you have them ranked correctly.
Who has the better chance of being the "Bell Cow" back in 2013...Chris Ivory, Lamar Miller, Mendenhall, or is there a back in a better "Bell Cow " position...
Well, some of the rookies. M Ball and L Bell especially, though you could also see Zac Stacy sneak in there. All three guys you list have that chance though I think Lamar Miller is the best of the three by a long shot.
Can Big Fat Bartolo Colon keep up this 1st half pace? Is this the classic "sell high" situation? Thanks
Not really. Obviously, he's not THIS good. And I'm not sure he wins 10 games in the second half as well. That said, he doesn't walk anyone, he pitches in a great home park with a good offense behind him. Think he's more valuable to your team than on the trade market because my guess is most people think he's a sell high, so it's not like you'll get fair value for him.
I like spaghetti.
Big Fan. Your Draft Day Manifesto seems tailored to a Snake Draft. Any chance you can do an article on your approach to an Auction Style Draft? I'd love to hear your thought process going into this season
Spend whatever it takes to get 2 good RB's & then patience - there WILL be bargains at every other position because of depth there. Could easily get a stud QB for under $5.
Also - would either spend on Graham or go $1 on tight end.
Trade away Jordan Zimmerman in a QS league for Verlander?
Yes, I'd do that
You have had a lot of cool/wacky experiences in your career/life. Where does getting your own baseball card rank?! Thats PRETTY AMAZING!
Hahaha. Yeah, I was shocked when they asked. IT's very cool. I was very humbled - it'll be more real when it comes out in August - I'm still in shock. But it's up there.
Do you even want D12 in LA?
Prefer him to D'Antoni....so, sort of? Last year he was a clubhouse cancer. But if Kobe wants him back then it tells me it was more D'Antoni than him
Keeper League and I can keep 2 for as long as I want (they move up 1 round each year)... Lynch in the 1st, Charles in the 1st, Luck in the 10th, Cobb in the 13th. Am I crazy for thinking about going Lynch and Cobb? And throwing Luck back in, as QB is so so deep.
Depends where you pick. If you have a chance at getting either RB in round 1 I keep the QB/WR. If not, I'm with you - no issue throwing back Luck.
As a Broncos fan I generally think highly of the teams players last year justifiably so. Am I just a diehard fan or can Peyton be the top fantasy scorer with the weapons he has?
I don't think so. He' has great weapons, feels better than he did last year - I epxect a huge year from him. But the DEN offense isn't geared the way a team like NO, NE, GB is and he doesn't run. I have him at 3 after Rodgers and Brees, just ahead of Cam and then Brady.
Loved the manifesto this year!! My team averages 92.1 pts a game, not your favored 94 pts. Am I dead? Trade Manning for Stafford/Matt Ryan and a rb??
Depends on the RB. If it's a good one you'd start I do the deal. But think you're okay, though - that's certainly close enough to compete. I wouldn't panic.
Carlos Gomez - still solid for the second half of the season, or sell high?
Still solid - legit stud.
Would you feel ok with Alfred Morris and David Wilson as your rb's? I could swap Wilson for D Murray (the oft injured....)
Prefer Wilson to Murray. Wish Wilson were your flex rather than RB 2, but he has rB2 upside for sure.
I'm in a $200 keeper league... I have AP for $45 and Doug Martin for $29; can only keep one... WHO? Thanks!
Why doesn't anybody love me anymore?
Health. But if healthy, you represent a great bargain. They improved the O Line last year. He has the ability to be top 5
Is it just the lack of TDs that pushes Reggie Bush lower? He could catch 75+ passes out of that offense (especially with a weak OL).
I agree - yes, it's lack of TD's for me.
How early is too early in a two-qb 10 team league
For what? QB's? You can go QB in the first in a 2 QB league
with 6 straight games not giving up more than 2 runs, is Jeremy Hefner above the Wandy Line?
Not yet but getting there. Lincecum limbo for now
Can I be your last question?
Yep! Thanks for stopping by everyone. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July! I'll try to answer more questions on twitter (www.twitter.com/matthewberrytmr) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/matthewjberry)
