It's the fastest hour in golf! And speaking of fast... average round on Sunday for those twosomes was 3:30!! Final group played in 3:38 but Wagner said he felt rushed all day. Guess those times might not be seen again. I say they DID play too fast. What do you say?!
Hey, what are your thoughts on Thorbjorn Oleson and his chances at The Open?
At this point the way the year has been going, you and I could get about the same odds as anyone if we teed it up at the Open. Thank goodness I don't have hair cause it would've fell out already trying to figure out who's gonna play well on a week to week basis!
Final group may have played in 3:38 and lost, but group before played in 3:30 and had the winner. Maybe they should have played faster?
IF 3:38 is too fast for a professional TWOSOME, then the USGA needs to re-think their "While we're young" campaign to get amateur foursomes in the 3:45-4:15 range.
Two things... One and most importantly Glen Nager kept saying during his press conference launching the While We're Young campaign that professional golf and amateur golf are two COMPLETELY different animals and shouldn't be compared as far as time goes. (that is the part where milk came outta my nose laughing) and two remember the course they were on had no cart rides and no big walks between greens and tees.
Good afternoon, MC! What would you like to see broadcast during a golf weather delay? A) Footage from a previous year of the tournament. B) Other.
B. Other. That would be the perfect time to show some stuff about individual golfers. Imagine if during the rain delay they were showing something about Johnson Wagner, then a thing on Jimmy Walker, then Jonas, Blixt. It'd give people all the more reason to follow these guys and become fans of theirs.
Um, no big walks between greens and tees helps things go faster. As does fact it wasn't a par 72. By the way final time wasn't much faster than final group time in Hartford. Really it is twosomes, maybe Wagner is just normally slow?
3:30 is fast even for over here in Jolly Ole' England... Nice to know they can get around if they have to... but I agree Michael. Too fast for the pros. We're seeing some real summer over here at the moment. Does a "good weather" Open favour anyone in particular?
Sho, Wagner's not known as one of the slower players on tour. Steve, define "good" sunny for 20 minutes and 56 degrees?! hahaGood weather means one of the veterans will be up near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday
@Tom clearly the answer to this is a range cam on Tiger's backyard in Jupiter. Joking (but it might get better ratings)
Golf should consider more late starts and later air time during the summer - get more viewership. Nice summer day not a lot of people staying inside to watch golf, have it on from 5-9 east coast time - better ratings.
The idea seems good but because of weather it's not. Any delay pushes the finish to Monday and no one wants that, especially the sponsors.
Forget the idea of Phil Mickelson being inconsistent, check out GMac: last 8 starts, 5 MC's and 3 wins. That's more up and down than the local roller coaster. Conclusion: recent form is overrated?
And just think, Saturday after the round Blixt said he had NO idea where the ball was going with the driver. I love this game!!
Whose your 2013 British Open champion?
Honestly right now I have NO clue, how honest is that?
Been sunny and 70's for a week now with no rain forecast for the foreseeable future... Of course I live near Cambridge :) It has been nice up Edinburgh way as well though...
Looked at the ten day forecast last night. Looked like high's in the mid 60's and maybe light rain for a day or two but I'll take that.
My mom is in Edinburgh now (step dad is from there) she say it's only rained once in the ten days they were there but it's been a bit chilly.
The win gets Blixt into the next three majors, right?
The Open, the PGA, and next year's Masters... correct.
British Open - true test of golf of best player or luckiest player on the right side of draw and got a few good bounces?
Most year's it's right side of the draw first, then best player, then lucky bounces. The term "true test of golf" is too subjective depending on where you're from and what kind of golf you played growing up.
Weather/draw combo has EVERYTHING to do with picking an Open champion.
I KNOW!! And I just got an email from my boss asking when I could have my top 25 list done. I'm gonna start crying now. haha
When it downpours for 4 straight days I'll know who to blame
I'm taking three rain suits and no sunglasses. Guaranteed SUNSHINE!!
Hey MC, in your years of being around pros, what are some methods of getting past a plateau (I have been a 7 hdcp. for a couple years) that you have observed?
Most of the best guys I've seen on tour have taken what was a weakness and made it a strength. So if you're a 7 and your weakness is hitting fairways, take 3 wood off the tee instead driver. Play a round just for stats sake and don't worry about score. Then focus 75% of your energy towards your weakness. Handicap will come down slowly but surely.
Could I break 90 at the open?
NOPE! And I got that $10 you paid me from our Phillies/Dodgers bet ready to throw on the table if you wanna go there.
MC, you're better off pulling 25 names out of a hat for the Open championship than you are trying to put some actual thought into it. Save the brain cells for the PGA Championship.
Maybe I'll do that!! Just pick random names then figure out how and why they can win.... HHHHMMMMM
What's your boss's email? I'll write you an excuse. :)
I do not think 3:30 is too fast for a professional golfer. I think we have became accustomed to very slow play, which makes it seem faster than it is. These guys are professionals they should not need that much time to address the ball and take the swing. They have time to think about their approach shot while they are walking to their ball. So, once they got to their ball all they need to know is the yardage and club to hit. Same with putting. They have had every putt on that green in the three practice days leading up to the tourney, so just read the putt and stroke the putt. It is simple. Just my opinion.
So let me ask you: What would you rather see... 5 hour round but the pro shoots 60, or a 3:30 round and the guy shoots 70?
Can I smoke on the Sr. Tour?
Yep. You can smoke on the regular tour too they just don't like it. And neither do your sponsors.
Ever caddie at one of those whale wager matches in vegas?
Not me but Scott Piercy's caddie has loop for a couple of pro poker players that had some HUGE cash games going.
Is Rocco Mediate the only tour pro who has played in the $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event? Are there other tour pros that like poker? Do the caddies play games in the evening?
This week there's a casino river boat really close to the tournament so a bunch of guys will stay there. I know of one other pro golfer who played in the main event but I don't know if he wants me to "release" his name. Don't know any caddies that played in it.
What do pro caddies do on their bosses off weeks?
Depends on the player and if they live close to the caddie but most guys just go home and relax for a bit. Some guys if they live near the boss will go get work done with boss if need be, but 80% is down time/family time.
I don't think they thought 3:30 was fast because of the raw time, but because they were racing against the sun - and they knew it from start to end. If they played 3:30 with no urgency, they wouldn't have felt rushed.
Pace of play isn't that simple to solve. I know I play quickly and my pace slowed WAY down in the Georgia Open with $10K on the line. Don't discount the money factor...
Best way to pick a winner for the Open... write all their names on an index card, throw them on the floor and just pick one
I was going to say Open top 25 list sounds like a good excuse for a game of darts
Maybe I'll let my two boys draw the names from the hat or throw the darts and then I gotta justify them. This could be kinda fun after all!!
Didn't Azinger play in the WSOP and get %#*! for it?
No comment!! HAHA... very good!!
He played in 2006 and 2008
I heard Nick Faldo is going to tee it up in a few weeks. Any chance he gives us a Tom Watson/Greg Norman like performance?
I'd say he's got no chance, but knowing Nick he's been playing possum this whole time telling everyone he's just gonna walk around. If he is near the top 30 come Saturday I wouldn't be shocked.
Live in Edinburgh and it has been incredible. 26 tomorrow, lots of sunshine. Westwood played Muirfield yesterday and said it was the best condition he has ever seen for a links course...
Wish I was there now!
As much as announcers relay the importance of pro golfers being able to move the ball in either direction how many pros are truly capable of not only doing this, but consistently relying upon it under tournament conditions? Do pros either hit a draw or fade and work around holes that don't fit it?
Most guys can work it either way but every guy has the shot they are most comfortable with (the GO TO shot). And in pressure situations, that's the shot you wanna hit so you make it work for the hole you're playing.
How impressed are you with Jordan Spieth so far? What stands out about his game and do you think he can have sustained success on the PGA tour?
There are plenty of guys that have game like him but at 19 he's much more mature than guys in their late 20's on tour. That will go a long way for him career wise.
Are you surprised that more Americans are not taking the opportunity to play in the Scottish Open to prepare for the British Open?
Not really. Most Americans just wanna get over there a few days early to get used to the time change. They'd rather play a bit of practice at their own pace then gear up for an event. Might not always work well but I understand their thinking.
Based on your professional background, which tour regulars could make a decent side income in standup?
Maybe Jason Gore. Other than him... Dufner could be a Steven Wright type but I can't see him going on stage.
Who would you take for a one day tournament at the local muni course. A pro caddie of your choice or the current reinging NCAA champion ?
NCAA Champ. They play on courses that aren't perfect all the time.
Nick Faldo will probably give us more of a Flintstone/Rubble like performance.
As a person who has toted a bag or two, what would you do if your player dumped you at the turn. How does that even get to that point?
I almost got in a fight (literally) with my player on a Thursday on our 6th hole of the day and we still finished the week out (made the cut too). If things are that bad going into the week then player and caddie should split Wednesday. It's just bad form for the player to fire someone after nine holes.
Hi Michael! do you think Inbee Park's putting ability rivals that of the top men in the sport?
What up David!! Absolutely Inbee could hang with any PGA Tour pro on the greens. Just remember the ladies putt on greens that are much slower than the guys. Especially at majors (except for the Open).
Does anyone beat Stricker at the John Deere this weekend? If so, who?
No way. Zach Johnson maybe could defend but if I'm going to Vegas, Stricker gets the mortgage payment bet! haha
MC, you've said a couple of times that the biggest factor that could affect Rory's game was switching the ball. Can you give more detail as to why that's the case?
It's because when you change from Titleist to Nike the sound and feel of the golf ball coming off the club face is so different. Shots that felt perfect with the ProV1 are completely different with the Nike 20XI and the shots you think you hit wrong because of feel and sound end up much better than you felt. That change in trust takes a LONG time to adjust to and when things don't click right away (like Phil and Callaway) there can be disastrous results (see Camilo Villegas). It's why Tiger changes his stuff like a glacier.
Chances Tiger wins a major this year?
Slim and none. And Slim has his coat on waiting for the car to be brought around!
Hot dawg!! Told ya that was gonna be fast! It's ok. We'll do it again Friday.SAME BAT TIME, SAME BAT CHANNEL!!Have a great week everyone!@ESPNCaddie on twitter and my email is ESPNCaddie@gmail.comYour boy.MC
