Jake, youve got me interested in this fantasy draft thing. I am ready to see how this plays out, any spoilers?
Jake, i am ready to see the article about the fantasy draft here is my top 5. 1)Lee Roy Selmon, Greatest Sooner of All time 2)Sam Bradford, Best QB in OU history 3)Brian Bosworth, Best collegiate LB of all time 4)Roy Williams, Super Man 5)Billy Sims, fumble away from 2 Heismans
I think you guys will have fun with it. Joe Washington, Jim Ross, OU football historian Mike Brooks, play-by-play voice Toby Rowland had an all-time draft, with 11 offense, 11 defense, 4 specialists. Everyone thinks they drafted the best team. You guys will have a chance to vote when it publishes on SoonerNation tomorrow.
Btw, I went strong on defense.
With Stills gone to the NFL, who are some of the nominees for craziest hair on the team and who wins?
Nila Kasitati in a landslide. He has the whole caveman thing going.
Why is Bob Stoops in denial about the SEC's superiority?
I'm not convinced he's in denial. I think he was trying to spin. Subtle difference.
Why can't Oklahoma football recruit blue-chip offensive and defensive linemen?
Comes down to the league OU plays in. It's a finesse league. Those are Mike Stoops' words. Not mine. QBs, WRs love finesse ball. Linemen, not so much.
Jake, if you had to predict OU's record this coming season, what would it be?
9-3 feels about right.
Dave. No AD??
I can confirm AD went in the first round along with one other running back.
Why was Bob Stoops so reluctant to make changes on his coaching staff when it was obvious there were problems?
He's made five changes in two years... how is that reluctant?
Kish sucks. We all know it. He got one recruit so far. Can we move on and let this be the first and last Kish comment.
I fear this won't be the last.
Bob Stoops earned a reputation as a defensive genius while at Kansas State and Florida, but the last few years I haven't noticed much innovation on the Sooners defensive. What's up?
I would call a 7-DB set innovate. Effective, well, no. You can run whatever scheme you want, until you get better players -- especially up front -- you're not going to be very good defensively.
Have you ever considered doing a small article tribute to the Pride of Oklahoma?
I wanna say I wrote something about the Pride back when I was with The Oklahoman.
Listen jake, just because Kish got a gimme legacy in Tay Evans, don't think we're gonna take it easy on him. He needs to impress. If we're impressed by him getting ONE LB, that's a problem.Told you we wouldn't let up...
Don't worry, never thought you would.
Hey there Big Fella, I gotta tell ya....as I was sitting down and enjoying a Mazzios Meatbuster pizza. I got to thinking, do you think that Josh Heupel may have a bit of trouble developing a run first offense, I mean I like the guy, but he as only been OC since 10' with Landry at the helm. What offense do you think Heupel is looking when it comes to copying their style? Well gotta go.....Let's go Back to Da phones!
The plan is to run an offense similar to what Nevada did with Colin Kaepernick.
Seriously, Jake? Stoops would have made zero changes if A&M hadn't routed the Sooners. Did brother Mike convince Bob changes were necessary?
Mike definitely has Bob's ear. An interesting scenario to think about -- what if NIU hadn't crashed the BCS bowl party, and OU went to the Sugar Bowl and beat Florida -- would there have been any changes made? Would people feel different about the program?
why the moratorium on Kish comments? its a chat, hes a subject people want to talk about. its an OU chat, hes an OU coach, seems like there is a connection there.
You obviously are new here
How are things looking with Tim Kish? Is this a make or break season for him?I know he has been under heat from fans due to his lack of success recruiting (i'd like to see non-legacy commits) and what seems to be subpar play from linebackers. (when they were on the field).
And even if I enacted a "moratorium" on Kish talk, it's not like people would listen.
No Kish bashing here, Tay Evans commits and if we can get another inside and two outside backers I would say that would be a pretty solid LB recruiting class. All or our potential gets at LB are all at least 3-star boarder line 4-star correct? I had to add the stars, because you know everyone on the chat, seems to think that really matters!
The chat's first Kish supporter!!
If Kish can bring in Tegray Scales, Christian Sam, and Dakota Allen I would say that would be a pretty decent job
Ben to many great RBs at OU to say AD is the best, my preference is Sims or Joe W. but AD is in their class
I ended up with neither, but I didn't waste a high pick on a running back. Too many good ones to choose from. Waiting paid off, and I feel like I still landed a big-time backfield.
If you put together a basketball with Oklahoma football players, who would you choose and what positions would they play?
Metoyer, Tapper and Grissom were all good basketball players in high school.
If I told you Blake Bell was a Heisman finalist, what would you tell me the Sooners record and bowl berth would be?
12-0, national title game
How did former OU baseball coach Sunny Golloway managed to piss off so many people?
From what I can tell, Sunny rubbed a lot of people wrong with things he would say, to people and behind their backs. Not saying he did or didn't. That's just the accusation.
How did Joe Castiglione decide on Pete Hughes as the new OU baseball coach?
Lot of people interestingly giving their last names today... Sounds like Pete's name kept coming up when Joe asked for recommendations. I was surprised by the hire. But I wonder if OU running into Va Tech in a regional helped Pete's chances, too.
Why aren't players like Millard considered for the Hornung award? Isn't he one of the most versatile players in the country? He can do it all...
He should be. But I wouldn't put too much stock into award watch lists.
How will the hire of BB affect our running game?
The thinking is that it will help it
Is the backup QB love the goofiest thing in college sports? People were clamoring for Bell last year and now before the season begins there are questions every week about whether or not he is the guy.
People always love the backup in Norman. After going undefeated his first two seasons, Steve Davis played horrible and finally lost a game to Kansas. Fans wanted him replaced the following week. Good thing Switzer didn't, because Davis would QB OU to another national title.
Jake, I gotta know....Do you have a certain Gameday routine? I usually wake up early, sit down and enjoy a nice strawberry Shasta and some turkey roasted in a cheesecloth. Both TV and radio are mandatory for college football Saturday's. Let's go Back to Da Phones!
This guy is on a roll
What's up with all the OU talk?
What's up with you?
Anything new on OU basketball recruiting?
Theres absolutely merit to stoops comments about the SEC.Georgia goes 1-2 vs their only real competition for the year, and ends the regular season 7th(beating an obviously overrated florida team is their only good regular season win)baylor beats #1 KSU, top ~30 in OSU, and top 20 UCLA and cant even crack the top 25.
6 of the 10 teams in the country were/are from the SEC. When that happens, the bottom teams get beat up.
Isn't it about time to offer Lawrence Evitt? He is an in state kids that I think has a ton of upside! I know he is smallish and is a HS RB, but he is a silky smooth athlete. Thoughts?
Silky smooth, but it doesn't appear that he's going to get an offer.
Jake got Demarco or Demond
My two guys are better than those two
From all the chatter out of summer camp, it appears the Sooners could exceed expectations in the secondary. Any other areas/players you are hearing about?
That's assuming these freshmen play like upperclassmen out of the gate. We'll see. That's asking a lot.
Sorry about that. I didn't realize every comment above me would be about Kish as well
Now you know
i read your chat every week. theres no use piling on kish but if people have legit questions regarding his ability to recruit/coach there is no reason to ignore them.
The operative word is "legit"
No love OR hate for Kish here but could he really be blamed for not recruiting a top LB this year. I mean, if you were a top LB prospect would you want to go to a school that didn't even play that position at times last year?
Wow, the Kish defenders are coming out of the woodwork today!
Jake, what would you say is the biggest year for a college football player? The make or break year if you know a guy is going to be a force or not, or exceed expectations.
It's different for every player, but I would say usually the second year is the big year for most players.
All things considered if two players pretty equal talent wise, will coaches tend to lean towards an in state kid over an out of state kid? Kind of adds some sentimentality for fans.
In the past, with all things being equal, it seems like OU will slow play the Oklahoma kids, knowing they can still get them at the end.
Will the Sooners defense be as bad or worse than last season?
Could be. Lot of question marks with this defense. Regardless, it's probably not going to be great.
Jake, Keith Ford...redshirt or no?
I say no. But it's up in the air.
whos your prediction for next commit
Really no one seemingly on the verge.
Who do you see from the 2013 class that could legitimately play out of a redshirt?
Byrd, Taylor, Ford, Dimon, Ward, Thomas, Cavil, Moore
Why didn't Castiglione hired Patty Gasso as the men's baseball coach? She's awesome!
Apparently she helped with the search, which begs this question -- who is more powerful in the OU athletic department? Still Sherri Coale? Or is it now Gasso, following her natty and massive raise?
Jake, did you grow up a sooner fan? You seem to have a love for the program , and it shows in how well you know the sooners.
I actually did not, but I have come to love covering the program. Love history, tradition, and OU has plenty of it -- if only Bob Stoops were nicer to me...
With 30 minutes to go, I arrive and say YES: keith ford could definitely take the 2 spot in the rotation
Don't see it. They like Brennan Clay too much.
What would be the benefit of playing Ford this year? Barring major injury he won't get a ton of carries.
Well, that's the dilemma. He won't get a lot of carries. The backfield is too packed. However, if they feel he's their main guy in 2014, they'll want to get some run so that he's ready and a little seasoned.
"if only Bob Stoops were nicer to me..."I bet youre not the only one that says that
Was actually kidding. I get along with Bob fine.
our defensive line wasn't half bad in spring , could we have been better running this attack d last year?
Couldn't have been worse
Do you think with more of an push toward a run, it will help the defense. It was rough watching the offense last year, it they didn't score it seemed to be a 1,2,3, punt with 1:30 off the clock and the defense immediately going back out on the field. Give the guy's on D, time to catch a breather...
I think they have to slow things down. For one, they have a new QB. But also, I don't think this offense will be equipped to outscore everyone in shootouts quite like last year.
The SEC can have 6 of the top 10 due to them only having to play 1 rotating game against the other division, and completely avoid most of the other tough teams(exception: LSU and florida's cross division game)The best the big 12 could do would be 1 undefeated team, 1 1 loss, and 1 2 loss, and so on. Its statistically impossible for the big 12 to get 6 in the top 10, even if they were truly all top 10 teams.
Fine. But the Big 12 "co-champ" got annihilated by the SEC's 3rd/4th team in the Cotton Bowl. Kansas State would have gotten annihilated too probably. And Georgia, Alabama would have likely done the same thing to OU that Texas A&M did. What does that say? You're ignoring the evidence we have before us.
Does the hurry up keep lineman away from OU? Run up to the line, squat for 30 seconds, then finally a play with 1 second on the play clock. I think the extended squating weakens them as the game goes along.
Not sure there's a connection there. There may be, but I haven't heard that. Think it's more the reputation of the league.
ou recrcutting has started slow but with quick parker starks in the fold could we end up with a top ten class if we add salmon Thomas also?
Maybe fringe top 10. Would still be a very good class, though.
When does the coaching staff look to the past for their successes? More running the ball, fewer plays that give the defense a break. The defense is run ragged with the hurry up on both sides of the ball.
I think they're looking at it now
Jake, what happened to the OU D? It seemed like it was doing great up until half time vs ND last year and then the wheels fell off?
Finally faced the good offenses of the Big 12
And Mike Stoops installed a goofy defense that exposed the Sooners against the run.
It seems to me the last time OU had a dominant running game was AD's freshman season? Is it the lack of players or lacking of coaching?
I've spoken to many former players about this, including those who played with AD. They think mindset is a big part of it. There's something to that. I grew up a Miami Dolphins fan during the Dan Marino era, and they could NEVER run the ball. Why? They didn't have a mindset of a hardnosed running team. When you throw the ball 60 times a game, it's very difficult to develop a mindset up front that you're going to run the ball. I think that's what has happened to OU over the last 5 years.
sooo ou runs the ball 30 times a game averge?
LBs chill out. Here are some names of guys who were nobody's. Bozworth,Lehman, Shoat, I could go on. Think wort was a big get and he did what? Don't focus on stars focus on how kiss developed the athletes he had signed to date.
Nobody wanted Lane Johnson. He was toiling in JC as a quarterback. And he became the 4th pick in the draft. Mark is right, though it's easier to develop a Gerald McCoy than it is a 2-star project.
yeah if i ever see that 7 db package again, i may have a stroke
you said ou not ready to out score in a shoot out ? outside of Qb why aren't they?
Not saying they can't. Just saying they're not as equipped as last year's team, which had an experienced QB and all that talent at WR.
Is OU still pursuing that 2012 DB from Fresno that was Notre Dame commit?
if stoops leaves who replaces him internally or outside hire?
If he left tomorrow, I think Mike Stoops would have the nod.
Rick in 2008 OU had 2 1k rushers and actually ran more than they threw
I was curious about the new dorms. They are going to be nice but what was concept of having a half athletic /half traditional student dorm rather than solely for male athletes like the Bud Wilkerson dorm was.
It's against NCAA rules now to have a majority athletic dorm. That's why the split.
We have heard about some of the new freshman that look good, but is their some of the guys that look like they took this offseason very seriously?
Three guys that have made noticeable strides since last season: Kendal Thompson, Torrea Peterson, Lacoltan Bester
how many does ou take in this class 24 ?
Depends on any attrition to the current roster
What's the latest on Tony Jefferson? Is he gonna sign with AZ?
Hasn't he already?
Any backlash on Kendal Thompson getting arrested?
Jake, biggest potential upside: Alex Ross or Keith Ford?
Ford is/was more polished coming out of high school, but Ross' speed/size gives him the upside advantage.
any word on any stand outs from summer workouts whos stepping up?
Two guys I keep hearing about: Hatari Byrd and Stanvon Taylor
Have you heard anything about the way that Cody Thomas has is performing on 7-on-7?
any redshirt freshman from the 2012 class that could be primed for an impact in 2013?
Derrick Woods, Sam Grant, Jordan Wade, Taylor McNamara and Alex Ross could all play big roles. Who knows, maybe Trevor Knight eventually, too.
Guys be honest....Do you think I could have recruited Bozworth, Calmus, Bowden, Shoate, Lofton, ect.....
Who do you think gets more minor punishment: Thompson or ndulue?
Same. 1-game suspension.
The elephant in the room.....any QR news....I'm assuming not. Is a big part of this unknown about him, due to Shipp being gone? I know Shipp leaving had a lot to do with OU not getting Toby Johnson.
Wow, we almost got through the chat without a Quincy Russell question... so close. No news. I don't think Shipp is a factor now. Just incumbent on Russell physically getting up to campus. At this point, who knows?
i'm actually hoping not knight... that would mean bad things
Would probably = a couple early season losses.
do we play see mac brown on the texas sidline in 2014? can he survive another beatdown
No. Another Red River beatdown would be his last.
Over/under of 3 texts Bob Przybylo sends recruits during his wedding. What you got Jake. I say over
If it's over, the life of the marriage will be a short one
I think that at this point, it would be more productive to ask about the DTs on campus than the one that has been a dead-end question for months now
wasn't blown away by treveo knight in thoms ou QB of the future or does Hansen replace him as a freshmen?
Is this English?
Do you not talk to Lon (Freddie) Kruger? What about Khadeem Lattin or Myles Turner for Bball?
Chatmon is the one to talk to about hoops recruiting
Jake, with Alex Ross' injury history, will Keith Ford pass him on the depth chart this year?
Definitely a possibility.
Jake, whats OUs chances with Mixon? I could see him and Quick on an Official with Hatari and LJ giving them the full sale of OU. Also who is the next commit? Im guessing Ty Barrett
I think all of that is sound logic
Do you take any Kish question seriously? Because I don't think you've ever answered one...
Next Kish question on today's chat, I will answer. Promise
Which second-year guys will impress?
Waiting for the switch to flip for Metoyer
How does OU get their swagger back? Is it only by winning a NC over an SEC team?
That would do it
Should OU just recruit a bunch of HS and JUCO TE's to eventually play OL for them?
Well, that's what they've been doing of late
What impact would Russell have anyway? He doesn't seem like a huge impact player but a decent addition to the line. He hasn't been on campus for spring or summer workouts.
Exactly. People act like he's the second coming of Dewey Selmon. Honestly, he would be a rotation player. Maybe a starter. Likely nothing more.
Would you call Tim Kish "Timothy" to his face?
Is Tim Kish just the fans scapegoat? Someone for us to take our defensive frustrations out on?
Guess I'll ask one then...Does Kish redeem himself with the OU fan-base this year?
Sorry guys, out of time... Chat returns next Monday. Everyone have a great week.
