Happy Tuesday everyone. It is Mercury retrograde for you astrology buffs, a time where electronics go awry...just warning you...
I know this will be one of the hot topics of the chat, but what are your thoughts going forward with Mr. Kemp? Is he still worthy of being a keeper for next year? Without a doubt, you'll be the only opinion that matters regarding medical issues and I hope that you have a lovely day.
I appreciate your flattery. Let's hope the day gets lovelier (it already has, thx to the props). Well, I was actually surprised by the DL move until I factored in the retro move (couple days), All Star Break (couple days0. Won't miss that much time and it prevents him rushing through what I think is minor AC joint irritation (reportedly felt much better after injection, just could still feel it with a swing) and prevents a TRUE problem with his swing, which he finally seemed to be getting back to since returning from the hammy. I may be a glutton for punishment but I still think he has a solid second half. And I absolutely think he's a keeper.
Stephania, Do you expect Tulo to be activated by the end of this week? Thank you.
Michael: I don't. He still has a little soreness. While it would be nice for him to play in All-Star, he needs to play for Rockies first. It's pushing it on the time frame. Yes, it's possible that they activate him late (so not Friday but maybe Saturday), but I'm hedging on the cautious route.
Do you think they are rushing Braun back too soon? Why not be safe and wait until after the break?
JJ: I think the feeling is that his thumb is going to potentially present a problem intermittently all season. So when he's feeling good, let him play, adjust if it starts to bother him. He was feeling substantially better than a few weeks ago and when they knew they were losing Ramirez to the DL, it made sense.
I'm confused with what the Yankees are doing with Pineda? Will we see him in the majors this season or not? Worth stashing?
Ben: I'm not surprised. The rehab assignment can only last so long. He went through the rehab assignment but they'd like to get him some more playing time before considering bringing him to the big league team. By making this move he can get some more starts under his belt, off the rehab clock and they will move him when ready. I think you'll see him in August.
Any idea when Alex Cobb will rejoin the rays pitching rotation
I know you're upset I favor the Niners over the Raiders but thanks for joining the chat anyway. And see? I still answer questions for Raiders fans. The Tampa Tribune says Cobb hopes to return in late July or early August but that all depends on how he continues with his progression and that there are no return symptoms. THe fact that we're talking about this is a great sign, given how scary his injury was.
Johnny Cueto a 19 game winner last season and a 3-time visitor to the DL this season. Is there any hope this year for him? Lat issues seem to linger with pitchers.
Jeff: His especially. The sense is that he keeps re-injuring at the same spot within the muscle; they're seeing evidence of that on imaging. The Reds have even acknowledged that this is likely to be a problem throughout the season. It should resolve once he has the benefit of the offseason but now he will have a longer absence before returning and then I imagine we haven't seen the last of the effects on him.
Any recent updates on Curtis Granderson? I haven't heard much new news about him lately.
Alex: Still having trouble gripping a bat. A bit concerning given the time since the surgery. But sometimes there is residual stiffness after a pinning and it is tough to overcome. Apparently it's not allowing him to really close that finger around the bat. He's a very hard worker and will get it back. It's just taking a little longer. Problem is he's had so little playing time this season, curious to see how he performs when he does return. He was good after the forearm; this might be tougher.
Stephania, back to Tulo, do you think he will be back right after the break or do you think even that is rushing him? Thanks
RJ: I think given where he is now, that is probably reasonable. The criteria for return remain the same.
Love your insight Stephania! Can Dexter Fowler regain his early season form upon his return?
Rob: Why thank you! That is the big question because if the soreness in his wrist or hand hangs around (especially wrist area), it's going to be hard for him to swing the bat with power, esp (L)-handed. His first rehab game he said he only had minor soreness - but that means it's not gone. He wants to return Thursday. The Rockies need him. Wouldn't be surprised if he did, then ges a few days for the break.
Is there any chance Jed Gyorko won't be as effective upon his return from this groin problem? And is there a timeline yet?
Zack: Always the chance, not only for limited effectiveness but for re-injury. Sounds like they will wait until post ASB to bring him back (which I think would be wise). He is expected to go on rehab assignment later this week. That was where he flared it up before so that will be a big test.
Stephania: Thinking about calling in "sick" tomorrow. What is my best option to cite as an excuse for not coming in?
Sean: Need to prep for fantasy football draft.
My girl stephania! Happy Tuesday to you as well! Do you see HamRam/Tulo/Reyes getting injured again this year? Should I trade the likes of a Stanton to get one? I need help at SS
James: I'd trade for Hanley. He's on a tear. Yes, it's possible he injures the hamstring but the further away he gets from the original injury, the better. Jury still out for me on Reyes and his ankle. Think he's risky, not just for that but for a soft tissue injury. If Tulo waits until truly healed beyond discomfort, then I think re-injury chance is low.
David Price looked great in his first two starts back...still any reason to be cautious about his "triceps" injury?
Kim: He has. I wasn't worried about how he'd be upon return as much as I am concerned we haven't seen the last of it. Just something about his shoulder that has me concerned...
I see Beachy is re starting his re hab tonight. Any idea how many starts they want him to have before he gets called up and will the face he already has a few starts under his belt before getting shut down speed up the process?
Tony: He's expected to throw 45-50 pitches tonight. Another couple rehab starts likely before he joins the team. I have the same outlook on him as I did before. Have to be mindful when guys first return from TJ surgery; they often have ups and downs. Inconsistency not surprising. So, I like how he's doing, don't expect him to go very deep initially and then I'd watch how he progresses over first few weeks in bigs.
Is Dan Haren's shoulder inflammation problem behind him or is it something to be monitored going forward?
Norman: Never thought it was a serious concern. More concerning was his overall struggle on the mound this season. A little rough when he first came out last night but he got through it. Not particularly worried about shoulder going forward.
What's the latest on Yadier Molina's injury? Cardinals are playing this like usual and not giving anything out.
Nathan: Nothing really to report. He says he wants to be back in a couple days. While there's no obvious structural issue, it's still worrisome that it's bothered him for a month. It might be wise for them to hold him out until rest of this week but not sure that will happen. And then I'd worry that at some point this will be problematic again.
Stephania - please help. Trevor Cahill has tweaked his shoulder while on the DL for his hip. No word on what that means or how serious it is. How concerned should we be that this will set him back from returning to the rotation a considerable amount of time?
Bill: I wish I had more specifics. Sounds like the team isn't even sure yet as to the severity. This is definitely pushing him back but no way to know for how long at this stage. One of the concerns when a pitcher has a lower extremity issue (like a hip problem) is that in the early stages, he might compensate for it and overload the throwing arm. Not sure if that's what happened with him but the timing is definitely interesting. I would expect a push back of at least a week, maybe longer.
Are you comfortable enough with the reports on RG III's recovery where you'd personally draft him in one of your leagues?
Martin: Yes. Although, caveat, I need to see some performance in training camp before I fully commit to that Yes. I only play in leagues that draft in final week or two before season and at that point, if he still looks like he does now, then yes.
Just picked up Chris Carpenter and Ryan Madson to stash untill later; do you see these two as having any fantasy relevance by August/September?
Jack: Tough call given the setbacks both have had. Madson is making progress but he's been this close before and gotten pushed back. Plus, he's not going to move into closer role right away (if at all), even when he does return so not sure he adds value for you. Carpenter is just a huge unknow. Last session went really well, everyone very excited, but he has been up and down since he started on a throwing program. They will not put a timetable on him because they are so committed to letting him determine when he's ready based on how things go. Don't imagine we'll see him before August.
Hey Stephania......any concerns with Adam Eaton when he returns, and do you have a timetable for him? Same with Leubke?
Bob: Concerns will be the outfield throws and that he is one hard throw from the ligament failing for good. Last rehab assignment it was the throwing which brought the timeline to a halt. Now he's just returned to playing in the field for four games (I believe) and so far, so good. Could return before ASB but I think they wait until afterward. He's got no problem hitting so his value for fantasy owners is there but if that arm fails him when he throws...
What's the deal with Shane Victorino? Is tonight a possibility?
David: Apparently last night he would have been available. Imagine tonight will be the same (have not heard officially yet). He's not healthy though. This is a continuation of the back/hip/hamstring issues that have bothered him for quite some time and I expect it will be problematic off and on for the rest of the year.
Can we expect a healthy MJD coming into this season? Would you draft him to your team, or run far, far away?
James: Training camp will tell us a lot because we haven't seen him run yet. Based on his schedule he should be ramping up his activities during camp and be ready to go for Week One. If he looks good in camp then I would not hesitate to draft him. Other than this foot injury and some minor issue with a knee that required a scope a couple years ago, he has been rock solid healthy.
Stephania word on A.Rameriz and out longer than 15 days?
Dan: Think they're hopeful it's only 15 but that doesn't mean the knee is right. If you go back to some of the blog posts I wrote early this season I worried about the knee nagging given that the symptoms he described were consistent with instability. Awkward slide, dive, misstep while running - even just running -can be problematic and flare it up.
Your thoughts on N.Walker's injury? Thanks
Pirate fan: They're calling it oblique but to my knowledge no imaging done to confirm severity. No word on whether they move him to DL but imagine they will wait a few days, see if he has trouble swinging the bat and if that lingers, then they'll move him.
What do you think about stashing Jon Niese for an August/September run in a very deep league?
John: Might be worthwhile. Reports are favorable so far. His program has sounded very rotator cuff oriented and whatever they saw (or didn't see) on his last MRI, gave him the clearance to begin a rehab assignment. Still, it is a throwing shoulder problem and there are no guarantees but if you've got room on your bench, it's worth a stash.
Any updates on Jason Vargas? Things have been quiet since the surgery.
Ian: Haven't seen any. It's a long recovery (months) so I don't expect to hear anything for a while.
Jacoby Ellsbury. Just a relatively routine night off, or something to be concerned about?
Adam: Sore left wrist and day-to-day. Not much else offered. Could miss another game (or games) but sounds like they don't think it's serious. Maybe trying to prevent it from becoming that way...
Hi Stephania. Any word on when Peavy returns?
Mike: Nothing official. Sounds like a rehab assignment could be in order by late this week. Then not clear how many starts they'd want him to have. Probably not returning before late July.
Is Sergio Santos on track to be back shortly after the all star break?
Adrian: So far. Sounds like he could return within the week after.
Status of Wandy R. and we see him at all ROS?
Right now they're waiting to see how he responds to PRP injection. It's a slow process returning to throw from there and then getting back on a mound, etc is all dependent upon whether the symptoms in the elbow return or not. Really quite up in the air at this point. If all were to go perfectly, still hard to imagine seeing him back before August.
Thanks so much to all for coming. Great questions as usual, never enough time to get to them all. But feel free to post on Twitter and send any new questions prior to our Thursday podcast - and I'll try to get to them then. Until then, have a safe and HEALTHY week!!
