Hey gang. Check out our Turn 4 answers today. What the big surprise of the 2013 season? Can anything be done to stop the last-lap carnage at Daytona and Dega? If you could pick one driver for your team among those available, who would it be? tinyurl.com/kryona7
Hey Terry- can we get a wake-up call when Jimmie Johnson retires?
Chris, the wake-up call is now so you can watch one of the greatest race-car drivers of all time make history.
With the progress Furniture Row Racing has made this year, how realistic is it to expect them to add a second team? Adding a driver like Newman, putting him with Busch would make for a solid team
All about sponsorship Jay. If a company is willing to pay the freight, it might happen.
Better shot at Chase, McMurray? Logano? or Newman? Surprisingly I would go with McMurray
I'd go with Joey, but I don't think any of that trio makes it.
How come Danica never appears in The Body Issue of ESPN The Magazine?
Do you really think she needs the pub Steve?
Hey Terry. Thanks for doing the chats. Is there any chance David Ragan will get a decent cup ride or a good nationwide ride? As cool as that Dega win was, I'd love to see him competing on a more consistent basis.
Thanks for joining in Nick. Probably a good Nationwide ride is a more realistic option for David at this point.
Your picks of who makes the Chase?
It's really up for grabs right now. But it may take two wins to earn a wild card. Smoke and Truex may need to win again to hold off Brad K and Gordon if they win in the next eight races.
What do you think Mark Martin will do next year? I have heard rumors of him driving for Kyle Busch in the Nationwide Series and possibly Trucks. What are your thoughts?
Mark will do some of that, but he won't race full time in any series.
Hi Terry, as #88 and #48 teams share a shop, have identical HMS equipment, run under the direct supervision of Chad Knaus and his protege Steve Letarte, why do you suppose #88 team doesn't perform at the same level as #48?
Because JJ is one of the best drivers in history and Chad is one of the best at making in-race decisions.
Great Monday Rundown blog today Terry especially on Kurt Busch. Do you see the Kurt's opportunity with FR78-RCR affiliation the same way Stewart has his SHR-HMS affiliation and won multiple Chase races and the Sprint Cup in 2011?
No, because RCR just isn't as strong as Hendrick and Kurt is running the show at Furniture Row, like Smoke is with his team. Plus, the 78 team is in Denver. However, FRR has taken a giant step forward this season and it's not just Kurt.
That race is exactly why ppl don't think Jimmie is an all time great. I could have won the race in his car. They showed the throttle on tv and all they did was floor it the entire race. He wins cause the team gives him a significantly faster car than anyoen else has. Doesn't Dale Jr. say his grandma could drive plate races, so don't say its so hard.
That's completely false Tim. His grandma could qualifying at plate track, but not race. Racing at the plate tracks is up for grabs, but it still requires great skill. And everyone floors it in those races. JJ has to be the most underrated athlete of his generation.
Your top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for New Hampshire?
Kahne, Bowyer, Hamlin, JJ and Gordon. My darkhorse is Ambrose.
When do you think Dale Jr will win?
Yes, probably before this season ends.
Good morning, Terry. Finally able to join at the start. Two items today: 1) For the Top 5, just concede a spot to the 48 because they're always there. 2) You're be able to sample all kinds of BBQ. What's your favorite? KC, Memphis, Texas or Carolina? Thanks again for the chats and I hope your 4th was a good one.
Keith my friend, you much be joking. Nothing compares to Texas Q. No true Texan like myself would ever say anything different, less he be disavowed. Carlina Q? Seriously? Who puts cole slaw on Q? That's sacrilege. But hey, my son married a wonderful ladt from NC (way above his pay grade, so to speak.) They were married in Raleigh. The reception had two food lines - one with Texas Q and one with NC Q. Guess which one I visited?
Why would Harvick quit #29 to drive the #39?
Money, a fresh start, Hendrick power, a long-time friendship with Stewart, etc.
OK terry, JJ is the greatest in Cup. But who is the greatest all around IE: nascar, Indy, Mods, Sprint car, etc. TY for the chats
The all-time greatest is AJ Foyt in my book. The greatest racing today is JJ, but it's just impossible to compare Cup to F1. Vettel is well on his way to being one of the best ever.
Is it safe to say that if it wasn't for the GoDaddy sponsership tied to Danica's hip, she would never have drove in a sprint cup race.
She wouldn't be there yet, but you could say that kind of thing about a lot of drivers in various racing leagues.
The roof flaps scandal this weekend. Seems strange that so many got caught. Normally it's just one team, did they share? Just seemed weird to me.
I thought the same thing. Really bizarre. My guess is people were spying in the garage at Dega and noticed it, so they did the same thing thinking they could get away with it at Daytona. Fail.
You said earlier in the chat that Chad was a big part of JJ's success, With that being said how many races do you figure should be credited to Chad winning?
I don't know. How many of Richard Petty's wins do you credit to Dale Inman? Inman is the only person alive with eight Cup titles?
Hi Terry! When do you see Matt Kenseth getting his next win?
Teri, I'm starting to think Kenseth is capable of winning anywhere. Maybe the only exception is a road course, but even there he could win in a JGR car.
Is it too early to start talking who will be the next driver in the 10 car?
Way way way too early. DP isn't going anywhere.
Ever since Childess smacked Shrub around for wrecking RCR cars and NASCAR seit him out for a Cup race 2 years ago, he has not really looked good. Some say it is the toyota engines but I think it is nmore of the former. What say you?
He's seventh in the standings with two victories. I'd say that's looking pretty good.
What track will Dale Jr win at next?
Maybe Michigan in August, Peter's friend from Family Guy.
I thought that might be your answer on BBQ, but Ryan McGee admitted preferring KC to Carolina, even though he's from Carolina. And let's still concede a weekly top 5 to the 48.
I conceded that a long time ago Keith. And my buddy McGee just hasn't been to the right places in the Lone Star State. I'll show him the real deal in November.
When will NASCAR hand out the penalties for last week's infractions? Will the Penske crew chiefs get suspended (I believe they are on probation)?
Maybe later today, but I think suspensions are unlikely.
With Bowyer, Dale Junebug and Outlaw Busch the only drivers in the Top 10 in points without a win, do you expect all three of them to be there after Richmond?
That's a good question. Clint a Junior are up high in the points. They're probably OK. Kurt's on the bubble.
What were you thoughts about Cup Champ Kenseth winning the Daytona NWS race?
I don't like it when any Cup driver wins in NW, but at least Matt doesn't race most of the events.
Since we are talking about food, which track has the best food?
Ohh, that's a tough one. A Martinsville hot dog is a must-have. But overall, I think Texas has the best food.
Last year at this week, Clint sat in tenth place, then proceeded to roll off 14 top tens 7 top 5's and two wins in the last 18 weeks. Now he's in second, so why with that past performance record is he not being mentioned with Kenseth and JJ as a championship favorite?
New year, new situation, new car. Clint has a shot, but I wouldn't pick him over two guys who have four wins each.
Wow, question 4 really bummed me out on the column today. It hurts to see so many deserving drivers waiting for that seat when marketing machine Patwreck takes one away.
That has been going on in racing forever. Nothing new about it.
If D Trump or R Branson built a track. How hard would it be to get a NASCAR race?
Unless the track is built by ISC, or maybe Bruton cutting a deal with NASCAR, almost impossible to get a Cup date.
Is it just me, or is the "outlaw" Kurt Busch gaining fans by the week?
He's gaining my respect by the week Bryan. And I do think his turnaround, on and off the track, are gaining him fans.
Any news on when penalties will be handed down for Roof Flap-Gate?
Nothing yet. It will be interesting to see how NASCAR handles this. It's a very unique situation with so many teams involved.
Speaking of Texas BBQ. You have to try Hard 8 in Coppell, TX Open Pit BBQ. By far the BEST brisket I have ever tasted!!
I haven't, but maybe I'll give it a look at the November race.
How satisfying is it for Kurt "Outlaw" Busch that he's worked his @FR78 Chevy into the Top 10 in points while both Penskes are on the outside looking in?
I consider it the surprise of the season Laura. But I'm not so sure it will end up that way.
Hi Terry! IMHO, Saturday Night was my man Marcos Ambrose's best shot at winning on an oval. Obviously, it wasn't meant to be. Overall, taking into account the quality of his Cup rides, do you think that Marcos has succeeded in the US, or hasn't lived up to expectations (or both)?
Anyone coming from his background and making it to a full-time ride in Cup is a success without question. That is no easy task.
Of all the tracks out there, where would you most like to see a Cup race that doesn't have one now?
Iowa. But what I'd really like to see is new tracks built in Denver, Seattle and NYC.
If NASCAR does penalize the teams over the roof flaps, any idea how badly Gibbs and Penske will get nailed considering past history this season?
I really don't think that will be a big factor. Let's face it, NASCAR probation is a bit of a joke. In this case, it's like saying someone who got caught speeding should go to jail if they add a parking ticket a few weeks later.
Why n heck would Terry Labonte ever consider buying Phoenix Racing as has been reported?
If Terry feels, or maybe knows, he has a sponsor lined up, then in makes a lot of sense to buy and existed team.
Also, Terry. Please don't be hating on my Kansas City BBQ. Haven't you ever checked out Oklahoma Joe's?
Heck, I love KC Q Jolt. Rates way above NC in my book. But my favorite stop in KC is Hereford House. I also love Straud's chicken.
If you had to pick a driver between Danica or Stenhouse, who do you pick?
It's not that simple Barney's fat friend. If my team needs money, I go with Danica. And frankly, Ricky has been a big disappointment this season. I really expected him to run well, but he hasn't.
What will it take for the 2nd rate teams (BK Racing, Front Row) to get up there and be competitive with the big boys?
Better personnel and a lot mote of them. And lots more money in sponsorship. And better drivers.
And if Juan Pablo can win Watkins Glen could he launch the Target team into Chase contention?
Anyone who wins a race can become a Chase possibility. Well, except David Ragan. He's too far back for his win to count.
Jayski is reporting that Morgan Shepherd will set the Nascar record for Oldest Cup Competitor on Sunday, in the #52 Brian Keseolowski car. Any word on if they're planning to actually run the entire race?
I don't know, but I really don't like this. I don't think someone in the 70s should race a Cup event. It's a publicity stunt.
When does Jimmie get signed to a lifetime contract like Gordon? I can't imagine Jimmie walking away from Hendrick but it never hurts to have it in writing.
First of all, there's no such thing as a lifetime contract, even though that's what they call it with Jeff. And JJ will be at Hendrick as long as he wants to be.
People tend to forget that Brad K finished 25th in points his rookie year. It is not that easy folks.
That's a fair point Scott. The jump to Cup may be the toughest climb in sports.
Since #1 priority of NASCAR is safety why would a 71 year old driver be allowed to compete at the Cup level? Doesn't that put the fans, track workers and other drivers in danger?
Morgan is an experienced driver, so I don't think there's a lot of risk, but in general, I think it sets a bad example.
Where do you see Dinger next year? In the 47?
That's my guess at this point.
Will the chase drivers ever be in their own points race, so the other cars not in don't take points away. So the winner gets 12 points and the last of the chasers gets 1. Makes sense since the other cars are just running for wins and practice for next season.
I used to think the same thing Dave, but I did the math a couple of years ago an it really didn't make it any closer.
I think I started something...FWIW, Mario Batali (former Iron Chef) once did a NASCAR Cookbook. Maybe a food segment on an upcoming Nascar Now?
As long I as get to taste the goods. Batali is a great guy. I sat with him when he cooked a magnificent lunch for us once at TMS. But those orange shoe have to go.
The 52 car will have real turn signals and the right one will be blinking all race.
Now that's just cold Mark. But he will get a prune juice on his first pit stop.
NC BBQ uses the finest pork. Texas BBQ uses the cheapest beef
Scott, there is no such thing as cheap beef in Texas.
Do you think the Brickyard 400 in a few weeks will be Juan Pablo's best 2013 chance at winning his first oval Cup race?
I think he has a shot at it, especially with how the Ganassi cars have run lately.
RCR going to 4 cars next year with Dillon? Or is he just taking the 29 team? and where does that leave Newman?
This all depends on sponsorship. I think Bud is going with Harvick. I know Richard won't go to four cars unless he's convinced it won't be a drain on the other teams.
I'm out folks. Have a great week. Peace.
