Fantasy Sports with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning, gang! We've got another sixty minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so let's get right to it, shall we? Second cup of coffee in hand - who is up first?

Brian (Indianapolis)

The Matt Cain owner in my league said that he is putting Cain on the trading block (he wouldn't trade him before). Do you think he is worth trading for and what value would be good?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

If you're going to get Cain, now's the time. The only question to me is whether or not there's truly an underlying injury here or not, because when he's been on - and that's been far more often than not - he's been very good. Don't overpay though, because Cain's owner is the own who is in panic mode.

Jon (GA)

Thoughts on Jarred Cosart in a keeper league with QS instead of W?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Solid prospect, and has the K-ability that makes him intriguing. There's been some concern with his control, but that could easily come with time and experience. Not rushing to get him in a one-and-done (especially in Houston) but for future, and with Wins not a factor? Sure.

Nick (College Park)

Better speculative saves pickup: Delabar or Tommy Hunter?

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Delabar did get his first, and while there's no fear that Casey's losing the gig, I would assume that he'll get a handful more before all is said and done.

Dan (NYC)

Better keeper: Spiller in 8th round (can also be kept following year in 6th round) or Graham in 7th round (can't be kept in following year)? 10 team league can only keep 1 drafted in 6th round or later. Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Fantasy football draft kit is up and running, and mock drafts are taking place! I don't think you ever can look farther than this next season in NFL. Graham, and it's not even close.

Jason Van Skike (Vineland, NJ)

You took a defense in Round 8 of a PPR Mock Draft?!? How am I supposed to take your analysis seriously going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

I did. The next tier of guys I had at that stage of the draft was 15 deep and no clear cut favorite, as both of the players I was targeting were taken in the two picks before I selected. Wasn't planning on it, but you need to adjust on the fly, and in that particular draft at that particular time, it was the best pick - and I'd do it again.

Preston (NYC)

Thoughts on Putz regaining the closer job, and his subsequent value once he does?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Bell is not the answer, certainly. But Putz is barely top 20 at RP to me with closer's job.

Scott (Cincy)

Do you think Kinsler will have a big 2nd half if healthy?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Short answer is no. Borderline top 100 hitter so far and I don't think he gets all that much more valuable.

Ryan (Toronto)

ROS: Ibanez, Dunn, Myers

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

That's the order, yes.

Steve (DC)

Thoughts on Martinez getting the call in StL?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

I haven't heard that the move was made to put him into the rotation right away, although it's certainly a possibility. Keep in mind that with the ASB ahead of us, there are a lot of call-ups and demotions being made to play with bullpen size and give SP extra rest, so it means little unless he's still there after the CitiField classic.

Darren (Omaha)

In your mock NFL drafts, where do you think the toughest spot to draft is (early, mid, late first round) this year?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

No question to me it's 6-8. That "when to draft Megatron" question is going to be huge in all start-up leagues.

James (Cleveland)

Where does Lattimore go in a Dynasty rookie draft? I currently have Gore and the #7 pick in rookie draft. Take him there?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

You have to assume he sits all season, so you're playing for next year with him. Not saying you don't take him - there are plenty of other rookie question marks - but if there's a chance someone can help you in 2013, you might want to grab him instead.

Jon (Upper Iowa)

Where does Shady rank in terms of RB's in a .5 PPR league in your opinion? Think 1400/8, 45/550/4 is doable? Thanks AJ

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

I've got Shady at 8 in PPR. I don't worry too much about the milestones in football because in the end, it's all relative and we're playing weekly, not total for season.

Ari (Limerick, Ireland)

You like Sal Perez or Napoli ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Worried a bit about Sal's health. There's a chance he may end up on DL if current soreness doesn't subside soon. Probably picking Napoli here anyway, but that other news doesn't help Sal's case.

Chad (StL)

Need pitching help, in order who would you grab off the wire? hellickson, nolasco, millone

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Ricky, Jeremy, Tommy.

dan (Charleston, SC)

Maholum has been killing me. Do I drop him for Hefner or Nova?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I'd take my chances with Hefner. Only around top 60 in Player Rater, but if you took his stats only since mid-May, he's probably top 30.

Al Swerigen (Deadwood)

12 Team PPR pick two out of: Stafford, Nicks, Amendola, Colston.

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

I go with Colston and Amendola.

Dan (NYC)

AJ, thanks for the response, but I'm confused. I looked at the expert mock draft and average ADP's and Spiller is going late in 1st and Graham is going in mid-3rd. Why then, do you keep Graham and say it's not close?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Keeper leagues are different, and Graham is a player 40 points clear of the next-best TE option. Spiller's value relative to the top RB left on wire likely will not be that much.

League Ruling (You're the Judge)

AJ Help! 12 team, 24 man roster, 18 categories H2H. Trade just went down that is tearing the league apart. Should this be VETOED? Mccutchen and Sale for Anibal Sanchez, J. Cueto, Todd Frazier, Dexter Fowler.

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Trading is allowed, so trades should be allowed.

Jack (Philly)

Do you think Hamels has turned it around and can I get a top ten return for the second half? Dude has the skill.

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Always had the skill. The issue to me, this season, was always more mental than physical. I think the extra days off that Charlie Manuel gave him, at the very least, took him out of his own head and he'll be "back to normal" going forward.

doseofsoul (myrtle beach)

Mr.Mass your paperback book is just as good as the hardback...everybody get it!!!! I have salvador at C too...who would you pick from these to replace ROS...Castro,A.J.,Ramos,Ruiz? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

Ramos just ahead of Castro.

Erik (Austin, TX)

I'm drafting in the dreaded 6th position this year in a 10-team league and planning on a RB with my first pick. If Rodgers or Brees is available in Round 2, would you pull the trigger or grab another RB?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Certainly depends on which RB is the best on the board, but likely would go with one of the two QBs.

Tyler (Chicago)

(compliment on your book), who do you like better ROS: V-Mart or Wilin Rosario?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Although I'm questioning the sincerity of that compliment... Wilin for me.

Dan (NYC)

AJ, thanks again for the responses. It helps to understand your reasoning, but I'm not sure it applies in my situation. Only 1 player per team is kept, so I don't see how this decision would be that different than picking among the two at any point in a redraft league.

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Perhaps, and every league's particular rules are different... but if none of the other top 8 RBs can be kept because they were presumably selected early last season, then by the time your pick comes up, you're drafting a top-10 RB anyway. I'd rather have No. 1 TE locked in.

Jim (cubicle)

Is your book better than Berry's?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

It's very different. I think the two work well as companion pieces, but both cover vastly different angles on fantasy sports and what they're about.

Sal Perez (KC)

FYI... i'm in starting line-up today

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Missed 2 of last 4 and could easily not last a full 9. I'm not assuaged by you starting - it's finishing that will make me feel better.

Grant (Baltimore)

I read your book past the Allen Iverson part then realized I didn't like to read, but it was good. Any chances there will be an audio book for those of us who are lazy? ... Thoughts on Sonny Gray?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

There is indeed an audiobook available from the usual sources. Gray is one of those "here until the team needs their demotion (Straily) back" players. It's a nice way to get him some experience, but I don't imagine he's here long - this time.

Chris (Indy)

Start Dickey today?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Don't love Dickey when he's moved up in the rotation.

Judd (Madison )

Lorenzo Cain or Jarrod Dyson ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

I lean Dyson.

Craig (DC)

Deep 5x5 backup ss: Escobar, Dozier, or Scutaro? ROS

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

I'd go Scutaro.

Dennes Arias (Methuen, MA)

Start Rajai Davis over Michael Bourn today?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

I don't think you can ever thin-slice things that finely. Hitters are not to be moved daily, without throwing up your hands and leaving you to the random fates, IMO.

Matt (NJ)

Is Jon Lester worth owning in a 10 team league? I'm tired of him torching my ratios

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

He's barely in top 50 right now, making him ownable - but by no means an automatic start.

Robert (Kansas City)

Puig is cooling off a bit and concerned about the SO rate. Hold or sell while value is still sky high?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

I don't think you lose out either way. He's going to decline, simply because the start was ridiculous. But he shouldn't hit .120 the rest of the season either. Listen to offers and if you like what you hear, feel free to move him - but there's no imperative here.

Joe (Bronx, NY)

I'm thinking of making a low offer for Lincecum. He still has a good K%. Is giving Parra a decent gamble? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

I think that's about right.

Robert ((Kansas City))

Follow up on Puig. I have an offer on the table to get Wainwright for him straight up. Keeper league, can keep Puig for the minimum for the next 2 years. Wainwright cannot be kept. What say you?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Wainwright is the top SP in the game right now. If you're anywhere close to competing for 2013 crown, you make the deal.

Bryan (Thousand Oaks, CA)

Will Melky still get suspended even after he already served a suspension last year?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

This infraction is not that infraction. Assuming MLB has the evidence, there won't be any "time served" here.

Captain (Jeter)

I'm back baby!

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Your ankle, baby.

Pitchers (USA)

Haren or Nova ROS? Nova has looked pretty good. Haren has looked unhealthy. Health aside, who do you have?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Very surprised by how well Nova has done. I'd much rather give him the try here.

Matt (NC)

PPR - Sproles or Bush in 2013?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Sproles for me.

Login Morrison or Ike Davis ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Country (Breakfast)

Is Billy Butler going to turn it around after the ASB?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Matt (FL)

Iwakuma. Just a blip, or is this what he'll be for the rest of the season?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Some slippage was expected, but more a blip than not.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

That hour just flew by! Thanks for all the Q's. Otherwise, it's just me talking to myself - and then Thursday wouldn't be any different from the rest of the week. As always, I'm on Twitter (@ajmass) - Until the next time, good luck and watch out for mountain lions in the kitchen!
