Hey everyone. Hope Wednesday is treating you fine. I'm filling in for Brett Okamoto today. Already see some questions in queue. Keep 'em coming.
Time to chat. Thanks to everyone who's already submitted questions. And away we go ...
Hey Josh, Buy or Sell: UFC 168 will be bigger than UFC 100.
Selling (mostly because of the time of year and lack of a "historic" event). But I'll say with confidence that Weidman-Silva 2 sets up as the biggest main event in UFC history.
Hey brett, what do you think about hendo no trt execmption in canda ufc 161? Close fight.
Since this is Brett's chat, don't mind if I do.I spoke with Henderson on Tuesday after news broke that there were no TRT exemptions for UFC 161. He said he decided not to use the therapy for a couple of months, and felt no ill effect. It's pretty interesting, no? There's some question as to the standard used by the Manitoba commission -- whether it falls in line more with WADA or the less stringent Nevada regulations.
Do you think anderson fights 9 times ?..
I sort of hope not.
Do u feel that bellator and the wsof are going to last long enough to be viable options for fighters or will the ufc will try and purchase them right before or right when they reach there peak if possible
Bellator will be around. Viacom's participation is mostly the thinking behind that. The jury is out on WSOF. I think they've done a decent job signing prospects, but the matchmaking hasn't sold me. Does Anthony Johnson vs. Mike Kyle do anything for you?
How do you feel about the Nelson/Cormier matchup ? I would at least give Cormier someone coming off a win. Nelson vs Big Nog seems better to me too.
If it happens, win-win for UFC. That means Nelson re-signed, of course. Also means Cormier has a chance for a showcase win, but if he loses it's the perfect time for him to commit to 205. And if Nelson rebounds off his poor showing last time out, then he's in back in the proverbial mix.
Based on how Cyborg looked past weekend, what's her chances against Rousey if they ever come to an agreement to fight?
Very good. I'd pick Cyborg to win right now.
Who did you have winning round 1 of Silva-Weidman? Other than not acting like an "idiot" and putting his hands down, what strategy changes does Anderson need to make in the second fight to change the outcome?
Had Weidman in R1. For the rematch, as I said this week on MMA Live Extra, Anderson has to be Anderson. He can't do anything foolish because Weidman is good enough to catch him. But he can't avoid the things that made him great. I think if he steps in the cage intent on hurting Weidman instead of wanting to show him up, that would be the best place to start.
So just to be clear, there's no way that Grant was payed by UFC to step aside for Pettis? I mean I wanted to see Grant because I actually thought he would beat Henderson but the UFC is probably licking their chops now that Pettis is in.
Grant says nothing like that happened, and I take him at his word. And I'm with you. I had Grant beating Henderson.
If overeem defeats Browne will he get a shot at the belt, or could you see him fight werdum for the right to fight for the belt
Overeem shouldn't get a title shot off a win over Browne. Werdum has done too much in the division -- he deserves his chance without having to fight again.
Cyborg has one more fight left in her current Invicta contract. If she wins one more time there and the UFC brings her over does she beat Rousey?
I wouldn't count on it. Cyborg and her handlers, like Tito Ortiz, swear there is no possible way she can make 135 pounds. So it would require the UFC doing a one off or adding a whole new weight division. Don't see that happening.
Top to Bottom, which upcoming UFC PPV event are you most looking forward to? 164 has a lot of potential, as does 167 and 168. Your thoughts?
So many great events the second half of 2013. I like the Milwaukee card with Henderson-Pettis. But top of the list sits UFC 168. Come on: Weidman-Silva 2, plus Rousey-Tate 2. We're all feasting fight fans right now.
Have we seen the last of Rich Franklin? I'd like to see him at least go out with a win.
Good ol' Ace. He's said he wants to fight before the end of the year.
what's happening josh... what fight do you see the ufc making next between frankie cub and lamas?
Hey Nick. Just chattin'. Some mix of the three would work for me. I think Lamas deserves next crack at the title. So, best case, Edgar-Swanson next. Lamas vs. Aldo-Zombie winner.
What would a second lost to Wiedman do to Silva? Retire?
He'd leave a lot of money on the table if he retires. But it's a real question, because like Fedor Emelianenko the fall from grace wouldn't be pretty. Who wants to see a struggling Anderson Silva? I don't. Two losses in a row would impact his status as the GOAT, I think. Silva qualifies as the best fighter of the last 20 years. At least in my book. But GOAT? After two losses to the same guy? And with characters like Jon Jones milling about. That's tough status to hold onto.
Hey Josh, really looking forward to the Machida-Davis fight next month, how do you see it playing out?
I like that one too, Rob. Davis's wrestling will need to be on point. This is one of those fights I need some time to think about it before picking a winner.
Do you think the UFC paid Grant to pretend to have an injury so that they could promote the bigger fight with Aldo? I've heard that he is guaranteed the winner of the Aldo/Henderson fight later, but what is he supposed to do in the meantime, just wait?
Conspiracy!!!!!! Actually, word is Grant won't be guaranteed a title shot, which is a bit of a joke.
Predictions for bader vs teixeira?
Glover has been beastly. I'm leaning in his direction.
It may sound like hyperbole but with the way the second half of the year is loaded, could this be the "best" year in MMA? Weidman/Silva 2, GSP/Hendricks, Cain/JDS 3, Bendo/Pettis 2..etc
Don't think it's hyperbole.
Why do you think, even amongst its supposed fans, there is so much conspiracy talk about Weidman-Silva and now the Grant/Pettis swap?
The times we live in, man. My two cents: people have no faith in institutions anymore. There has to be some reason for it all, right? Plus the Internet propels these ideas into the consciousness of people who may never have had the thought. I don't get it.
Whats Cyborg's contract status with Invicta? Any chance we see her shift to the UFC in 2013/2014? Once Rousey beats Tate, and then Zingano, there won't be anybody left to to promote to fight Rousey...
Cyborg has one fight left. Tito Ortiz was on my podcast this week (he helps manage Cyborg) and said they'd talk turkey with Invicta soon. But they're happy there, and feel the platform works for Cris.
I was not impressed by Weidmans victory over Silva. I look at it as the same as Serra over GSP ( remember that rematch). I also see a motivated / mad Silva destroying Weidman. Silva clearly has a speed advantage and when not clowning around can put anyone to sleep.
I have a bet going with Brett on GSP beating Hendricks...want in?
I don't bet on the fights. Anyhow, I'm taking Hendricks.
So what is wrong with TJ grant. This sounds super fishy??? I mean as much as i'd rather see BENDO VS PETTIS II, I don't like this tomfooler. What is your take JG?
Apparently he was concussed during BJJ practice. Crazier things have happened.
When do you think Invicta gets their TV Deal? And what networks could you see them being picked up by?
They're just fleshing out their PPV model. It was nice to watch on TV in HD than an online stream, for sure. I think it'd be a mistake for them to jump into a TV deal unless the circumstances are just right. So far so good for Invicta. Shannon Knapp knows what she's doing.
With Koscheck getting hurt should Maia find a new opponent to fight or wait for Koscheck to heal up?
Maia won't fight on the card. Guess it depends on how long Koscheck has to sit out. But Maia doesn't need a fight with Koscheck. There's plenty of welterweights out there.
After Cyborg's win on Saturday is Rousey-Cyborg the biggest "superfight" left?
This may sound nuts to some of you, but, yes, I think it is.
How many times do you think the UFC will show the Showtime kick in the promotion to Henderson-Pettis?
What is Vitor's next move? There is no one in the middleweight division that makes much sense for him at 185
Sit and wait.
Assuming Rory MacDonald defeats Jake Ellenberger, where does MacDonald go from here? The UFC can't have him knocking off contenders.
Big assumption. But a win would put MacDonald right up there. A lot depends on whether or not GSP retains his belt against Hendricks. If he does, MacDonald is sort of on ice. If it goes the other way, maybe he's fast tracked.
How much do you think it is going to effect ticket sales and PPV buys for putting Bendo VS Pettis II on the Milwaukee card?
Having the local guy helps for tickets. Don't think it boosts pay-per-view much because Henderson isn't really a draw. I'm hearing it's a huge Harley Davidson weekend in Milwaukee. No hotels within 50 miles of the arena.
Thoughts on Mayhem Miller and Tito Ortiz possibly coming back to fight?
Mildly interested in Ortiz's comeback after what he said on my podcast this week. Don't see much hope for Mayhem.
You giving Korean Zombie any chance against Aldo?
Yeah. Not much of one, but yeah. Only if KZ gets his grappling on. That said, I'm picking Aldo.
Do you predict that we see GSP lose to Hendrix? If so it would be pretty crazy to lose two dominate champions within the same year.
what type of ratings do you see UFC on Fox on July 27 doing?
It's sort of amazing that FS1 is opening NASCAR then six hours of UFC programming. Don't know about ratings enough to make an educated guess. But UFC continues to be a driver for that sort of stuff.
Are you a big fan of John Cusack and Minnie Driver?
Grosse Pointe Blank is a great movie. When I was working at Sherdog, way back when, a listener suggested the title of my podcast. Thanks again, dear friend. As an aside, I appreciate Cusack's views on privacy, liberty and government.
Josh, i seen the docmentry , the smashing machine it was cool !! What another one thats comes to mind? Thanks for chating!
Choke. Fightville. Jens Pulver: Driven. Like Water. Once I Was a Champion (Evan Tanner story, though it's a flawed look).
If Silva only practices takedown defense until the rematch would he be able to stop Weidmans takedowns?
No, it would make it easier for Weidman.
Hey Josh. Are you, me, and Okamoto LOADING up on Silva in the rematch? -140? Yes PLEASE!!!!
Not me, but good luck.
Really excited about Ellenberger/Mcdonald. What type of fight do you see out of them, and who do you see winning? Also, does winner get GSP/Hendricks winner?
I'm picking Ellenberger. I expect a war, and if it is that sets up well for the trash talkin' kid from Omaha. Have you heard some of what's been coming out of Ellenberger's mouth? It's funny. He even dropped a co-ed joke about Vassar. Who does that?
Do you wonder how Rousey feels about being bumped off as the main event?
I'm sure she won't mind when the PPV numbers roll in.
If Pettis beats Bendo does Bendo get the immediate rematch?
Guess it depends on how he loses.
Josh, do you think taking Silva down in the first 30 seconds, landing big shots and almost submitting him was even more impressive than the way Weidman finished the fight?
No, pawing with his right then stepping into the left hook was great.
How do you see Velasquez/Dos Santos III playing out?
A lot like the rematch. Velasquez all the way.
If you could invest in the future of one UFC prospect, which fighter would it be and why?
Conor McGregor. Tremendous athlete. Hell of a fighter. Very marketable, especially in the UK.
If Weidman wins again, what are ur thoughts on Machida dropping down to 185?
Love the questions from Los Angeles. For the rest of you, weather is perfect, today, FYI. There's always been talk about Machida heading to 185. He seems reticent. Not interested in the weight cut, plus he views his speed at light heavyweight as an advantage.
What would be the next weight division for the women in the UFC? When do see them adding one?
Not for a while. If they do, it should be 115.
I watched the video of Connor McGregor and Dana White having a good time in Las Vegas. Is McGregor the real deal or is he a pretender? He gets a lot of hype for only one UFC win.
Watch his earlier fights. Very talented kid. He's back in the cage in Boston next month.
If a juiced Cyborg can make 145, hard to imagine a non-juiced Cyborg can't make 135.
Telling you, they swear she can't make it. Ortiz told me this week that she cut 20 pounds to make 145. But, hey, if a deal is done and she signs to fight at 135, you'll know it was all about contractual leverage and concerns for her health were BS.
what are your thoughts on fight master? is it better than TUF?
I watched the first 15 minutes. Haven't watched since. I don't watch TUF either, for what it's worth.
Hi Josh...just want to comment on your suggestion that Silva should come out and be aggressive in his rematch. In all of his fight he counter his opponent, pick on them one jab/ kick at a time, and then be aggressive once the opponent is falling apart. Don't you think he should stick with the similar strategy gave him so much success, may be in a more conservative way, instead of being aggressive and potentially being caught by Weidman's heavy left?
He's evolved in that direction, but watch earlier fights. The guy is a hunter by nature.
Cyborg or Wanderlei Silva as the most violent fighter in MMA? These Brazilians really know how to wreck people and make an action fight!
Toss up. The Axe Murderer at his peak was a sight.
Can you speak to the success, or failure, of the 125lbs Flyweight division? It seems like there aren't enough fighters, and with the fans loving finishes, it doesnt seem to bring in viewers. Are you a fan of the little guys?
I'm all for the flyweights. Part of the problem is the guy at the top right now. If John Moraga slugs his way past Demetrious Johnson, you'll see people change their minds on 125 pretty fast.
If Silva was really throwing the fight, the time to do it would have been in the first round, when Weidman had a couple of submission attempts.
That's crazy talk. He had to sell the fix. So the only way to do that was get his head smashed multiple times. (Disclaimer: I'm kidding.)
You don't think if Silva destroys Weidman, Silva-Jones is back as the #1 superfight?
Oh, it's right there. But Rousey-Cyborg would be a spectacle -- and incredibly important to the growth of women's MMA.
I know im wish fully thinking here but if Cormier dropped down to 205, I would love for R. Evans to welcome him. Great match up imo.
I still believe Cormier is being forced (in a nice way) to 205. He doesn't want to go there. The weight cut and all that isn't what he wants to focus on, and it would become a major focus of his fight camps.
Worst case scenario hypothetical of Weidman or AS getting hurt close to fight time. The UFC would have to postpone the fight compeltely and not throw Vitor in there, correct?
I don't know. Hush. Don't want to think about it.
RE: Vitor - Sitting and waiting could be a long layoff. If Mousasi makes the move to MW, that sounds like the best matchup. In addition, I believe Gegard toys with Vitor and cements himself as a legit threat to anyone in the MW division. Thoughts?
I am not on the Mousasi bandwagon. There about a bunch of bouts at 185 worth making that don't require fighters dropping down in weight.
Sell me on how Hendricks is taking the title from GSP?
No fear. Tons of power. Southpaw. He can wrestle with GSP.
Who plays you in the " Josh Gross Movie?"
Obviously John Cusack.
Nick Diaz recently told Dana White that he wants a fight, who should they match him up with? Who makes the most sense? I would have loved tohave seen him fight Kampmann but he is booked with Condit.
Any action fighter at 170. Kampmann would be awesome.
Hypothetical - GSP loses, Rory beats Hendricks and holds the belt. Does GSP fight him? I say he does.
Drama! I'd hope both guys realize they need to fight each other.
What other matches will they add to the 20th anniversary show? Wasn't it supposed to rival UFC 100?
Sorry for the delay, I accidently closed the window.
If everything went right, it might have rivaled UFC 100. But as it stands, UFC 167 won't. That's fine. There are so many great fights the next few months, I think it would be difficult to ratchet up the sort of press and anticipation UFC 100 delivered. Had UFC landed New York and Madison Square Garden it could have done so.
Any up and coming wrestlers getting into MMA, that fans should be looking forward too?
Many, many wrestlers are getting into MMA. Watch Bubba Jenkins, who just signed with Bellator. There are honestly too many to name. Support Olympic wrestling, by the way.
JG next Tuesday is National Hot Dog day will you be celebrating?
Probably not. I don't each much meat. If I'm doing to have a dog, it'll be at Dodgers Stadium.
After seeing what happened to the talked about Gamboa-Lopez matchup, you would have thought the UFC would have learned not to let superfights "marinate."
You want some irony, go look at Lorenzo Fertitta's Twitter timeline. He was pumping up UFC superfights and taking boxing to task for losing out after Pacman was knocked out.
Is Marc (Malden, MA) your cousin or something? Mix it up.
And we're not cousins. I'm sure he's a nice guy.
Buy or sell, Penn will make another title run at 155?
Have Meathead and Schaub made up since their Twitter beef?
Who knows. Better yet, who cares.
What's on tap for Wandy? Wins over Bisping, Cung Le, and Stann aren't looking so bad these days. He's a win away from being in the mix at MW.
Still unclear. He looked great last time out. Though I think he's more than a win away.
Re: Your comments on the podcast about Weidman not being allowed on the podcast. How much do you feel this black listing by the UFC has affected your career as a journalist in MMA?
I'm sitting here chatting with you guys. So, I'm doing just fine.
Josh , tell us a story from japan about hendo and wand? Thank,s
You probably heard this one. After they fought at Pride 12, the following morning they shared a bus ride back to Narita Airport in Tokyo. Silva and his team were pretty happy about how things went down the night before, while Henderson was battered and bruised. All shades of purple. Still, I could tell respect was there. Henderson got his revenge.
We're over the 70 minute mark. I'll stick around for another 10.
Anyone can get caught by a punch but why do so many ppl feel B.Henderson and GSP will lose their next fights? The skill sets are so incredible....
Caliber of the competition.
So how did you finish off Okamoto? I'm picturing omoplata....
Brett's alive and well. He'll be back next week. Must say, I enjoy doing this.
What do you think of a Cain vs. Jon Jones fight in the future?
Love it. Hope it happens.
Do you think Uriah Hall will have his head on strait for his upcoming fight. Those 2 did have a dislike for each other, maybe that motivates him??
Ahh, Uriah Hall. I think he beats Samman.
Any word on the UFC coming back to the Philly/AC region?
Not this year.
Do you think silva has lost his intimidation factor? He was so good and undefeated for so long this loss has to be messing with his head. Plus I have read Brazilians are not too happy with him.
I don't think he lost it. We'll know the night of Dec. 28.
Follow up on Penn, do you think he never fights again or has the division gotten too tough?
BJ will fight again, at 155. The division is incredibly tough. He's older and has taken plenty of punishment.
Are your Dodgers going to pull it off and win the Division? Puig isn't the biggest fan favorite here in Phoenix.
Second half of the season is interesting, at least. It was looking bad for a while. Kemp has to get healthy, and Greinke needs more two-hit shutouts.
Thoughts on a TJ Grant vs. BJ Penn #1 contender fight? Winnable fight for B.J. Makes a lot sense. As we are well aware, BJ is the only LW in UFC history that can sell a PPV.
Grant beats him. Too much pressure and size. Maybe I'm underestimating Penn at this stage of his career, but don't think so.
How many times did you go to Japan to watch Pride?
Twelve times. While I was in college. I didn't got to class much.
Hey Josh, glad to have you in chat today. After Bones beat Chael we were told that Anderson called Dana to request a fight. Do you know or can you speculate as to what fight he requested and how his loss effected that request?
Silva denied calling White. For what it's worth.
Does Dan Hardy's heart condition mean he must retire from MMA or is it possible we will see him again?
He wants to fight again. I think he'll find a way.
Fun fights coming up. Brad Pickett vs Michael McDonald. Who you got?
So many fights coming up. I like McDonald, but Pickett is no joke.
And on that note, we're wrapping the chat -- just under an hour and a half. Thanks everyone for your great questions. I tried to get to as many people as I could without repeating.
