Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

Welcome to my Open Championship chat. There is a lot to discuss. I've picked Jason Day to win, Jordan Spieth to do well in his first Open and Tiger to be in the mix with some concerns about his elbow.

victor (Louisiana)

Do you think tiger woods will be o.k By tomorrow in scottland?

Farrell Evans
  (3:01 PM)

Tiger says he is fine. He's not going to tell us if he's hurt, because he has always said that he wouldn't play if he didn't he could win. He's one on one good leg, so we know that he can probably get around if his head is right on a slightly injured elbow, if that's indeed the true prognosis.

Pj (Midlo)

What holes will be mandatory scoring holes (3 of 4 days) for players to contend And which hole/s will provide most doubles or higher ?

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)

PJ.Muirfield played relatively easy for three rounds in 2002 with the exception of the third round, where wet and cold conditions turned the course into a nightmare for the players, including Tiger who had 81 on that day.So it's a course that can be taken by these players. But no hole is a given birdie out there.

Brad (Cedar Rapids)

Hey Farrell- Thoughts on Graham DeLeat this week? In a highly competitive fantasy golf league, and struggling on who to sit between Mahan, Webb, DeLeat.

Farrell Evans
  (3:06 PM)

You must be from Canada talking about DeLeat. Look at how they have each played in the majors this year, there last month on the golf course and their record in the Open Championship. Deleat has no experience in major championships. He's just happy to be there. That makes him dangerous. However on the experience scale, you have to like Mahan and Webb.

Whitney (Georgetown)

How's the food in Scotland? As bad as it sounds?

Farrell Evans
  (3:07 PM)

Have you ever had Haggis?

Matt Slocum (Mexico NY)

Is Tiger Woods ready to win at Muirfield? Also, will the wind play a factor for all golfers (even though it is supposed to be nice in Scotland)? Finally, what are the toughest and easiest holes at Muirfield?

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

TW hasn't had a competitive round since Merion. He's one three Opens. He knows how to win. It all depends on how he handles the pressure and the rust on his game. I think the elbow is in good enough shape for him to compete at a high level.

Chad (Vegas)

Sounds like there's a bit of a buzz for Sergio over there this week. Are his chances that justified since hes played well there in the past?

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

Regardless of his recent issues in the press, Sergio would be a popular Open championship winner. He's been close in majors. He definitely has the ball striking to handle any potential wind at Muirfield.

John (Denver)

Have you been lucky enough to play any of the courses on the Open rota? Impressions/favorites/bucket list? Thanks

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Play the Old Course at St. Andrews and go from there. That's where you start. It's not the best in the rota but the one you have to play.

Brad (Cedar Rapids)

Thanks Farrell.... Not from Canada, but DeLeat has been playing well and think links style suites him. Also DeLeat played in Open last yr, missed the cut.

Farrell Evans
  (3:16 PM)

Webb and Mahan have a lot more pressure to perform well. A guy like Graham, as I said earlier, is dangerous because no one expects him to be there.

victor (louisiana)

Farrell why did you pick Jason day to win the open?and second do you think nbc will keep the ryder cup becauise there deal is safe for the next ten years.yourcomments.

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Victor,Look at his record in the first two majors of the year, a second and a third. I just have a feeling that he's going to win this week. He loves the pressure of the majors. On the Ryder Cup: the Ryder Cup is a hot property but it's the best from a TV standpoint when it's played in the States in a huge market like Chicago. Obviously, I would love to see ESPN have it.

Daniel (Roseville Ca)

Who in the 40 and over set will place best this week? Go Tiger

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Since Stricker isn't playing I can't pick him. Els won a few weeks ago in Germany, so you have to take him seriously.

JD (CT)

What is Tiger's injury exactly? Is it just soreness or is there a strain or tear? Do you think he can overcome it and play well? Also, does Phil's win last week increase or decrease his chances of contending?

Farrell Evans
  (3:25 PM)

JD,They called it a strain. As I have said, TW is as mentally and physically fit a player as there has ever been in championship golf. But he's looked nervous in contention in the last few years in majors.Phil should be a factor this week. He battled hard in the Scottish Open. So we know his mental game is in good shape.

Alex (OH)

Is the weather still supposed to be mild? Does that just give more of the field a chance if that's the case?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Alex,Mild weather should yield a winner who plays the best this week. If weather gets involved, it rankles the hierarchy, opening the chance for anybody to win who can handle tough conditions.

Aaron (Wisco)

I have read a lot of comments where people get finicky calling this event the ?British Open?. What the protocol?

Farrell Evans
  (3:29 PM)

It's the Open Championship, everywhere in the world but the States. The French Open is Roland Garros in France, but most of us in the States called it the French. Futbol versus soccer. Table tennis versus ping pong..etc...

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

1)Haggis is awesome. 2) History shows a legend wins at Muirfield. 3) That said I'm picking a Boo Weekly like guy. A couple of wins on tour and *whammy* he's the open champ.

Farrell Evans
  (3:31 PM)

Haggis is awesome. I have never heard anyone say that. How about a Bill Haas type or Hunter Mahan?

Alex (OH)

Is the weather still supposed to be mild? Does that just give more of the field a chance if that's the case?

Whitney (Georgetown)

Who is a sleeper to jump into the Top 5? Maybe a Peter Hanson type?

Farrell Evans
  (3:32 PM)

I called Rory McIlroy a sleeper in my expert picks, but a more legitimate sleeper might be a player like Jordan Spieth or any of the European Tour players that we don't know much about in the states like Marcel Siem.

victor (Louisiana)

Farrell ijust got word that tiger tees off at 9 45 am eastern time.i thought I would give you his tee time tomorrow.

jack (kansas)

if a player breaks a club on thursday, they have to play the rest of the weekend w/ 13 clubs? or they get to reload on friday??

Farrell Evans
  (3:33 PM)

They get to put 14 clubs in their bag on Friday.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:33 PM)

jason Day.

John (Denver)

Is pace of play as big a Europen issue as it is in the States? If not, what if the big issue for recreational golf over there?

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Pace play is less of an issue in Europe. It's simply not tolerated. if you can't get the ball in the hole, as a recreational player, in a decent amount of strokes, you pick your ball up and keep it moving. Also, it's impossible to talk about any one problem in Europe. Too many countries and sensibilities about golf to narrow it down to bullet points.

Tom (Verona, WI)

A broken club may be replaced during a round if the damage occurred during normal play (not slamming the club in anger).

victor (Louisiana)

who do you pick in 2 weeks to win the women's british open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

Inbee Park. Three consecutive majors, five wins. This South Korean girl has a quiet mastery of her game that is a delight to watch. She doesn't try to overdue anything. It's all composed and understated, but no less willful than some of the more temperamental players in the game.

Tom (Verona, WI)

What do you enjoy most about the Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Tom,The spectators at the Open are very polite and knowledgeable. In the States, it can feel sometimes like you're at an outdoor cocktail party and golf is the background for drinking, cigars and corporate hospitality.

Farrell Evans
  (3:47 PM)

If Tiger doesn't win a major this year are you more concerned that he might not ever catch jack for the all-time major wins record?

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks, Farrell. You predict no shouting immediately after tee shots?!

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

I do. That's a good one. But you might have a guy who takes his clothes off on the 72nd hole on Sunday to make some kind of statement.

victor (Louisiana)

is the women's british open going to be televised this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

Yes. ESPN.

Tittleback (Albany OR)

Did you pick a low am?

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

I did not. Who should I be watching?

NewportLfty (Upstate)

Any inside on how the coverage will be on ESPN during the early morning hours (4AM - 6AM EST). I got up early last year and had to suffer through seeing only 3 shots in 45 minutes of coverage. While golf is going on I do not need to see those sappy history of the course and who has won in the past coverage. Just show golf. They do not break from a baseball game to do a piece on some player of the past.

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

Hopefully, you will see more golf this year.

victor (Louisiana)

if you want my women's british open champrediction prediction I;m going to say it right now stacy Lewis will win it two years in a row.Go stacy.you go girl.

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

Stacy is a good pick but what has she done since the beginning of the year?

John (Denver)

A 15 handicapper shoots what on this course in the conditions expected?

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

90.

Tittleback (Albany, OR)

Fitzpatrick

Tom (Verona, WI)

Keep an eye out for the birdman!

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

The bird man might just be there.

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

My time with you is coming to a close. Thursday to Sunday I will be blogging the last couple of hours of play. Please join me with all your questions, complaints and concerns and observations.

Colin (Philly)

I got a funny feeling Rory is in contention on Sunday. Any thoughts?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Rory was my sleeper. Nobody expects him to really do well, at least to win but he could run away with this thing if he steps back and realizes why he started playing golf in the first place. It wasn't to fire agents and change golf equipment. Those things should never be news.

NewportLefty (Upstate)

Hope at 4AM. Got to love it. I have begged Harig in the past to help spread the word to the networks that the golf coverage is too choppy. But he thinks all those pieces are good for the game. Can I get soemone who writes for ESPN to champion the cause to get golf only coverage. Just show shots. Not broadcasters, not side pieces. JUST GOLF.

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Last question to you Newport. All golf would be nice but remember it's programming. The vignettes are important to breaking up the golf. Perspective is good.

Mark Dvornik (Tampa, FL)

Farrell, Have you noticed any correlation to players who come over from US and adjust to time zones changes a week or more before playing better on the first day or two compared to players who come over closer to the start. Do you think age plays a factor? And are you affected by the time zone change?

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

It takes a day or so to get adjusted to time change.Chat tomorrow. Peace.
