Fantasy Sports with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang! Time to talk some fantasy! We've got 60 minutes to take your questions, so let's not drag this break on any longer. Second cup of coffee is finally in hand... who is up first?

Kurt (Lakeside, CA)

Is Revere worth hanging on to in a 14 team mixed league?

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

If it was closer to a month and my SB totals needed him, then perhaps. Hard to waste that roster spot when it may be 8 weeks.

The Todd (SF)

How would you rate these 2Bs ROS? Kendrick, Uggla, Gyorko. I was planning on having 2.

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Kendrick, Gyorko, Uggla -- you can see a lot of these "ROS" questions answered in the Top 250 Rankings we released earlier this week.

Pj (Midlo)

Nfl rookie rb that will have greatest fantasy impact

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

I'm looking at Pittsburgh and Le'Veon Bell myself.

Francisco L. (pit)

Why no love for me in your ROS rankings? 2 ERA, 1.2 WHIP, 80K/28B in 76 innings not good enough to crack the top 250.

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

It was close, and quite frankly, probably could have squeezed him in if if not for wanting to get Pineda and Beachy in there. On the whole, though, I see a major second-half regression.

Oso Blanco (Macon GA)

Does Gattis see daily at-bats now, with a few Braves dinged up?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Have to imagine we see him in LF for at least a few weeks, until HIS inevitable injury. Rough year for Atlanta!

John (NY)

Hey AJ, what do you think about young guns Chris Archer and Danny Salazar. Both had great starts just prior to the break, what kind of numbers do you see them putting up for the second half?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Archer has a chance to do some nice things. I don't see Salazar as a lock to return right away, so I'd expect less from him.

Shark Attack (Joliet)

Samardzija is down to 90% owned. Are people just panicking because of a couple of rough starts? Sit/start this week @COLO @AZ?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Certainly, those parks don't inspire confidence. I ranked him 125, so obviously, I think this is a bump in the road. I can understand benching him for now - just not cutting.

Bill [via mobile]

If your biggest area of need was wins and your ratios are solid but still at risk - how would you approach this strategically in the second half?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I don't think you really can "attack" wins since it's the one stat that is beyond the SP's control. To me, if your ratios are solid, then the wins really *should* come.

Matt (Houston)

AJ, would you take a chance on Josh Gordon in the late rounds if your other 3 receivers were Julio Jones, Jordy Nelson and Dwayne Bowe? I feel like Gordon could represent great value later in the season and injury insurance or trade bait once his suspension is up.

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Absolutely. Any receiver has a chance at missing games throughout the season. In some ways, knowing for sure that the missed time will be over with early makes it easier to select a suspended player versus an injury risk, as your bench depth.

Steve (IND)

FOOTBALL! How are you feeling about DHB in Indy?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

I'm not.

Jon (Denver)

Bourn and Gardner are still ranked fairly high in your 250 ROS rankings. They've both been injured and/or pretty mediocre this season. Do you really think they can turn it around? I feel the need to drop for OF who are producing.

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

With those guys - and the likes of Everth Cabrera, Eric Young - I rank them for the one category they can give you that most other players won't - SB. If not for that, or in points-based leagues, I would not necessarily ranked them at all.

Ron (NYC)

would you start Freddie Freeman in a 3-game week?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

You don't combine with next week for the 10-gamer? Yuck! I'd expect him to play twice, so if he's your regular starter, you go with him.

Mike (Seattle)

Would you swap the # 5 and #16 pick for #10 and #11 in a 2 QB PPR league draft. Just switching the 1st 2 rounds. Think it makes sense to do so!

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

No, because I'd rather get the best player I can in the first round, and then roll the dice that a guy I would have taken at 11 falls to 16 for me anyway.

Jay (Madison)

If you already locked in your play-off spot in a H2H points league, would you sell Harvey now, or ride him as long as you could?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

I'd sell him now, presumably because the longer I wait - and the fewer IP he has left under his belt - the less I'll get back from him.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Worst QB you are ok ending up with in a redraft...if you say Romo, I may become violently ill...

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

I mean, I want one of the top 5 guys certainly. After that, not a ton of difference between 6-15 (Ryan to Flacco) so I guess Eli (14) would be my personal preference "low point" but would also pass on Romo (13).

NHL (1)

What are ROS expectations for Cespedes? Can he finally start producing and maintain a decent avg after his Home Run Derby Win?

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Derby schmerby! It's not like he hasn't been prodigious in batting practice all season.

Mike (Tonawanda, NY)

Big Brother pick? Amanda? Andy?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

Very early on, but I'd say Amanda is definitely in the lead right now with Judd as a sleeper.

Who want to see my HOH Room??? (B.B.)

What to do with Daniel Nava? Had an incredible first half but barely gets discussed..Can he repeat in the 2nd half?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Definitely one of those guys to fill out your lineup with - ranked him at the very end simply because it didn't seem right not to, which I think is kind of your point.

scott (ny)

Would you be ok with having Ryan Matthews as your #2 or do you suggest trading to get someone like DMF. MJD, or Murray

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

That's who I ended up with in our 12-team mock and I felt really icky about it. But only MJD of those three names appeals to me more.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What general lessons did you learn from the latest PPR mock draft you did? RB early, wait on QB and TE?

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

I think overall, you want to get RB early. But more than that, I think drafting in the 6-8 spot is dangerous. You miss out on the top RB and then on the return round, assuming most owners go RB-heavy, you miss out again. Yeah, you end up going with QB/WR, but at end of day that RB spot seems very weak.

JW (MA)

Mornin' AJ! Unbearably HOT here in central Mass!! I've seen Ranks, but are they different for H2H wkly Hosmer or Butler? thx

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

Not really different. Everybody goes hot and cold, but we're projecting the best players - format really shouldn't play in too much. Butler.

Michael (Milwaukee)

What's the first QB taken and how early would you pull the trigger?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Rodgers for me. Brees a close second. No other candidates. Depends on format of league, but certainly should be off board by around 15th overall.

Rx (VEGA$)

Will Myers ROS? Start him or Torii or Victorino?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Ranked him 250. Torii over Shane.

Mike (Tonawanda, NY)

In fantasy football, do you favor auctions or serpentine drafts? PPR or standard scoring? And, keeper or redraft? Just curious about your personal preferences.

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I prefer a dynasty league, with PPR included. It's not a redraft, so snake works better - to give losers from last year first shot at rookies.

Tiger (The Open)

Kaepernick in 4th round or RGII in 5th?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

RG III.

Mackelmore (Thrift Shop)

ADP, reports and most recent depth chart have Daryl Richardson as the #1 in StL...any value in picking up Pead or Stacy later?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

I don't think it's a lock that D-Rich is the No. 1. I think the fact Pead is out Week 1 makes it much easier to list them that way, but if Richardson rushes for 40 yards? Pead starts Week 2. Certainly value there.

David (NY)

Do I start Braun with possible suspension looming or do you think he will appeal?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I don't think any Biogenesis-involved player will be forced to sit out games in 2013.

Nick (The 203)

Better Yankee starter ROS: Kuroda or Nova?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Kuroda

Jay (DC)

Weeks, Franklin, or Walker at MI?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Weeks, Walker, Franklin.

Rick [via mobile]

What do you think of fister in second half? I get nervous starting him with that awful infield defense

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Love Fister. I mean, do you "worry" about Scherzer and Verlander because of the D? I know the K's aren't going to come as often, but still...

Nick (The 203)

Are you worried about Strasburg lack of wins this season and his awful last start?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Short answer is no. I mean, I ranked him as my No. 12 SP, so if you think that shows "worry" then there you go. But wins are simply not part of any evaluation process.

Mark (DC)

You didn't rank Leonys Martin? What do you make of him? Seems like a good source of steals and he is moving up the TEX lineup?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

You get to the end of the list and you have a group of about 20 hitters who all are interchangeable in terms of value. So it was close... I do think generally speaking that playing in Texas in July and August can keep performance down due to the oppressive heat, which is why I ended up taking Leonys out.

Joe (Ohio)

You say "forced"...with the Brewers out of contention and the possibility of a shorter suspension if not appealing, is there a chance that players may not appeal?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I think there's a lot of assumptions with that line of thinking, first and foremost being the union possibly not being on board with that kind of bargaining.

Emsi (Washington)

I just saw the daily notes for tomorrow (posted during this chat -- way to multitask!) -- why so low on Doubront? He's also left out of your ROS list, even though he's had a string of great starts and has a high-powered offense behind him...

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Impossible to accurately thin-slice for one start, and I tend to rely a lot on the computer-generated matchup numbers for a starting point. Overall, I just think the BB/rate is too high at present to have optimism for consistency over the long run.

Mac (Cinci)

Lawrie just dropped in my league. He needs to be snatched up, correct?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Probably better than what you've got on the bench, and that 2B eligibility is coming.

Richard (Arizona)

Who closes for Dbacks as we move on for ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Putz, unless they do decide to trade. If he struggles over July, then maybe they try and deal on the cheap.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Favorite movie you've seen in the last 6 months? Ray Rive or T-Rich in a keeper leage?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

If a movie doesn't have animated minions or other talking inanimate objects, I don't have time to see 'em. Rice.

TJ (Chicago)

Think Matt Cain rebounds in the second half?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

No. 3-level SP in fantasy rotation going forward.

JR (Sask)

Aramis Ramirez going to produce down the stretch?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

To some extent, yes. Certainly can see 10 HR and .275.

Rob (Philly)

AJ, your opinion please: I offered Billy Butler, Michael Bourn, and Jordan Zimmerman to get Chris Davis. I'm deep in the OF, pitching is always out there, and I'm tired of Butler.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

I've no issue with this deal, especially if there's decent replacement value on the wire for the extra two slots.

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

That's all the time we have for today gang. Thanks for the Q's. I am on the Twitter (@ajmass) if I didn't get to you. As always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
