Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the boxing chat. Not a big weekend as we're in the dog days of summer but still good FNF card tonight with Ajose-Lundy and a solid ShoBox with Bey-Molina. Plus lots of fall action coming and the big news of the week that Garcia-Matthysse has been added to Sept. 14. So check out a ton of new blogs and the news stories and features and the schedule and let's get to it.

JR (Los Angeles)

Any idea who might round out the rest of the may-canelo card

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I think the Mayweather Promotions fight is going to be Ishe Smith-Carlos Molina being rescheduled for the card (was supposed to be tonight but Ishe got cut) and I think there's a good chance Victor Ortiz will make his return on the card. Nothing definite yet though.

Chuck (Chicago) [via mobile]

Do you think it was a wise decision for Adrien Broner to move up to welter if he says he'll never fight Mayweather. Should he drop down to 140.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Depends on the fights offered to him. He can defend his title at 147 or go to 140. There are good fights in both divisions. At 147, his mandatory is Maidana, so we will see what happens with that.

Ray (Dallas, Tx)

Hey Dan how fun do you think it would have been if there could have been a tournament in the middleweight division simliar to that of the Super Middeweight? Wowww!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I dont think it's necessary because there is already a clear champion, Sergio Martinez. But there are a lot of good fights to be made in the division and slowly but surely they are being made.

CHRIS (NJ)

Dan don't you think that Mathysee vs Garcia is going to be the best fight of the night. Probably even fight of the year? I for one am more exited for this than the main event..

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

If it's that kind of fight I dont think it will be good for Garcia. I love the fight though and am pumped for the card.

Davis (Boston)

Garcia is now saying that he wanted the matthysse fight all along. was he right or is he just saying that to stop the Garcia is ducking matthysse talk?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I never understood all the people saying Garcia didnt want the fight blah blah. He's a fighter. He has fought good opponents. He was never "scared." It was a complicated deal that took time because of the cost to put it on the PPV.

Davis (Boston)

With the possibility of adding Trout-Lara on the mayweather-Canelo undercard does this give it more PPV buys or does it stay the same?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

That fight is not being added to the card, according to Richard Schaefer. He told me it is not even a fight for which he has any discussion for whatsoever with either side. He said it is merely one fight that was thought up at the office but there has been no real conversation about actually making it at this point although that could change down the road.

R.E.A (Tucson)

Dan,Why is Chris John still a Champion and why hasn't he been stripped of his title when he refuses to fight outside his country let alone quality Top Fighters in his division? Can't remember the last time he was up against a top 5 fighter in his division.....

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

He has made his mandatory defenses. He has fought plenty of times outside of Indonesia, including in Japan, Singapore and the US, albeit a few years ago in the US. The WBA approves his fights. There is no rule you have to fight outside your country by the way. There is zero reason he should be stripped. He fights regularly against WBA-rated and approved opponents. It's pretty simple.

Bob (Virginia)

With the 2 big fights on the pay per view, are we still getting a 4 fight card? I know some have been 3 fight pay per view cards.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Schaefer told me yesterday it will be a four-fight card and they are working on the other two bouts.

Cameron (Auckland (NZ) )

We (down under) regard Anthony Mundine as a bore (among many other things). How is he rated by the US boxing professionals and what does he have to do to improve this view?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Nobody here gives a crap about him and he is not highly regarded or even that well known. Hopefully, he stays in Australia and inflicts himself upon the fans there instead of here. No TV network here wants him anyway.

Nick (Melbourne (Australia) )

Hi Dan, I'm a big MMA fan although I do like watching Manny, Floyd etc. I asked Brett Okamoto recently about the supposed Anderson Silva / Roy Jones boxing match and he didnt think it would happen. Are you of the same opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Yes, I doubt it happens. And hopefully it won't.

Johnny (Oakland)

No ESPY for greatest light middleweight from Colombia in the last decade? I was really looking forward to Joel Julio's acceptance speech!

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Aaron (MI)

Dan, in your opinion, who do you think are the top possibilities to fight Kell Brook next? Heard rumor of Josesito Lopez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I've heard various names, including Lopez, which is not a good fight for Lopez in my view. I've heard Senchenko and Julio Diaz as well.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Hey Dan - You mentioned via Twitter that you now think the Mayweather-Canelo PPV might have a shot at breaking the all-time record for PPV sales. But while Garcia-Matthysse is a tremendous fight, it doesn't seem to me that either guy has the kind of name recognition amongst casual fans to add more than a couple hundred thousand buys to the total. So maybe it goes from 1.5 million to 1.7 million or thereabouts. Do you think you may have overstated the impact this fight will have?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

It's not just that fight that I think is all of a suddden going to add a ton of buys. I just think the overall massive hype and excitement for the card, mainly the main event (obviously), including in the mainstream, could push the ppv to record heights. I am not saying it will break the record but I think it has a great chance to be at least 2nd place and do 2 million.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Hey Dan - Are we looking at our first $85 PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

No, it's $64.99 SD and $74.99 in HD I believe.

Julian Givens (Dallas/TX)

Who do you favor in the Keith Thurman/Diego Chaves bout, somebody's 0 has to go?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Love the fight. I think it has KO written all over it. We know Thurman can bang and I have seen a few Chaves fights and he can also bang. To me, whoever lands first wins.

Jacob (Kansas City)

Who would you favor if Tony Thompson and Bryant Jennings fought?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

At this point, Thompson I think takes the young man to school.

Carl (NYC)

Dan, what's the deal with AB's timeline? He's borderline crazy, and I have a bad feeling this wont end well.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Broner really needs to get a grip on things. I agree.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Is Alvarados fight set yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Not yet but they're getting there for him to fight Provodnikov. The Provo side is done. Top Rank is just working on its deal with Alvarado.

Adrian (NJ)

Any reason why ortiz would choose Alfonzo Gomez, over mosley or lopez, as his comeback fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

There is no opponent set yet.

Chuy (Detroit (MI))

Do think Chavez Jr will ever win a middleweight championship again? Let alone make the middleweight ever again in his career?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

No, I dont see him winning another 160 title. I doubt he will ever fight again at 160.

Keith H (Seattle)

What's next for Eddie Chambers? I like his chances to make an impact at Cruiserweight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

He fights at cruiser Aug. 3 on the NBC Sports Net show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Here's the story I did yesterday on Garcia-Matthysse: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9490047/danny-garcia-lucas-matthysse-added-co-feature-floyd-mayweather-jr-canelo-alvarez-card

Mitch (Oakland)

Dan - I'll be at next week's FNF. Says that there will be a guest appearance by James Toney. Will it be captioned in English?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Jacob (Kansas City)

If Victor Ortiz is added to the Mayweather-Canelo card, do you think it could attract semi casual boxing fans that watched him on Dancing with the stars?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I think that is probably part of the reasoning they might add him. Victor has his own fan base for sure.

Brian (NJ)

Now that Garcia v Matthyse has been added to the PPV, based upon just those two fights alone how would you rate this among your most anticipated fight nights that you will cover?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Way up there.

Julian Givens (Dallas/TX)

I don't know much about Mickey Bey so who would you favor in tonight's bout between Mickey Bey/John Molina and why?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Bey is the better boxer, Molina is the better puncher. It's a step up in competition for Bey but Molina has looked so bad in recent fights other than the KO of Dannie Williams. I think Bey beats him. Should outbox him.

javier (PR)

Dan any truth that the Thomas Dulorme Fight on Latino will be scrapped because they have not been able to find a suitable replacement for Spadafora

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Not true. In fact, the fight is made. Dulorme will be facing Frankie Figueroa. That is what I was told by HBO this morning. The fight is Aug. 17 on the Geale-Barker undercard but will be televised that night after the HBO telecast on HBO Latino.

David (Cape Canaveral)

D$, psyched that Cotto will fight in Orlando, Delvin as an opponent is cool with me too, please keep us up as to when tickets are available. Hope to see you there King Freak!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

When the ticket info is announced I will tweet it and put it up on my boxing Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dan-Rafael-ESPN/320596341293700). I do plan to cover that fight.

Omar (Sydney)

Edwin Rodriguez... beast.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Good win but let's not get carried away please.

Frank (PHX)

D$, does Puerto Rico PPV have count towards the buys or is that considered foreign revenue?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Domestic PPV counts the United States, PR and Canada.

Sean (CT)

Is Delvin definately the opponent for Cotto? I haven't seen anything officially announced

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

They have a deal agreed to, but it is not signed yet.

john (indiana)

Dan I just saw that video of Broner at Popeyes. Honestly, at what point do Schaefer and Espinzoa sit down with the kid and tell him to stop embarassing himself.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Shoulda happened a while ago. That said it is not Espinoza's responsibility. Schaefer needs to talk to him or have somebody else talk to him, like Haymon, whomever. I spoke to Bernard Hopkins this morning and he is disgusted by what Broner has been doing and said he plans to talk to him.

Chuy (Detroit (MI))

I believe during last week's chat you might have mentioned that Cotto going back to Top Rank might have been to land a bout with Sergio Martinez for the 160lb strap. Do you think that Cotto possibly went with Top Rank to fight the winner of Marquez/Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

No I dont because I do not realistically see Marquez or Bradley fighting at 154 and I do not realistically see Cotto dropping down in weight. If he was willing to drop down he would have taken the massive payday for a rematch with Pacquiao.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Assuming the Stevenson/Cloud fight is finalized, do you think the winner is being set up for a fight against Andre Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Eventually, yes.

Anthony (San Jose, CA)

Any talks on Guillermo Rigondeaux's next fight date or opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Nothing. HBO is too busy throwing up every time his name is mentioned.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: What is up with Robert Guerrero staying out of most boxing discussions?? Thought he was fighting Victor Ortiz possibly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

At some point Guerrero might fight Ortiz, sure. But Ortiz has been out for over a year and is coming off a serious injury. His first fight back is not going to be a top-level fight, nor should it be.

Chuy (Detroit MI)

Before his career ends does Mayweather ever fight Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I think there's a decent chance it happens at some point, when everything else has happened and both guys are trolling for one final big payday. But it will happen in name only if it does. It will never be what it should have been or even close.

BoxFanDan (flanders, NJ)

Dan, have you heard anything on GGG's next opponent and do you think he will still fight 2 more times this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Nothing is happening there at this point. He has no date, no opponent and nothing is really in the works. He will definitely fight at least once more. I am skepitcal he will fight twice more but we shall see.

Quinn (Pittsburgh)

With your connections, I think you have the resources to incite a twitter feud between Adrien Broner and the Sheike.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

That would be epic.

Jason (Boulder, CO)

I would strongly recommend to the fight freaks check out http://www.fathomevents.com/#!mayweather-vs-canelo. Save the $74.99 HD cost and see and HEAR on the big screen for around $20 or so - prices have not been released...plus many theaters now serve ice cold adult beverages. I have watched the last few Floyd fights this way, great atomosphere.

Al (York Pa)

Never hear much of Ricky Hatton promoting any of the big British fights anymore? What happened to Hatton Promotions?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It is still around and they have had shows in Ukraine (a few days ago) and in Australia. He has several fighters under contract but the company has to be struggling since losing their Sky TV dates. He does have some fights he is doing with Warren on BoxNation.

Mike (L.A)

DTM, would you get the Mike Tyson face tatoo for 1M dollars?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Probably not.

Chuck (Chicago) [via mobile]

Dan will you be at fnf in Chicago I'm excited

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I wont be there but it's a good show on Aug. 16. I hope Chicago fight fans really support it.

JoJo (NYC)

For all the people (like me) who are disgusted by Broner's behavior, we should just stop watching his fights. Stop rewarding him for bad behavior.

Guano man (PR)

Dan do you think the fact that garcia vs Mathysse getting made by GB put some presurre on TR to get alvarado vs Prodonikov Done

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

No, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Omar (Sydney)

Do you rock a TMT t-shirt to bed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

That's classified.

Jeff (OH)

Dan, if you had the opportunity to sit down with the Iron Sheik for a couple hours on the condition that you must drink the cold beer with him and not the Sprite, would you suck it up and pound some beers for Sheike baby?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Absolutely. I don't drink the @Sprite. On the jabronis like the toofred and the KevinI drink it. I would be happy to have the cold beer with Sheikie Baby.

Quinn (Pittsburgh)

Anything in the works for Froch-Groves?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Probably going to get finalized for November.

Julian Givens (Dallas/TX)

Is it possible Rigo's is next bout is not televised or on ESPN FNF because of the HBO debacle?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

FNF goes on hiatus at the end of August so not the rest of this year. And it's not an HBO debacle if they make a decision. You can agree or disagree but it is HBO's decision on what fights it buys.

Chris (Rotterdam Jct)

Who do you have in the Malik "80-72" Scott/Derek Chirosa fight? Malik 100-90?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I think M**** S**** wins the fight.

Adam (Boston)

Any update on when Angulo's eye will heal? Will we see him again this year/early next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Haven't heard anything about Angulo since the last fight.

JoJo (NYC)

Why no more FNF after August?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

It's been that way for years. ESPN has other programming in the fall, including college football and basketball and the NBA.

Kevin (Victoria)

How surprised are you that Fury took the Haye fight? I'm pretty sure he's getting decapitated...

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I was a little surprised but glad to see it happening. It creates interest in the heavyweight division, which needs it.

Paul (NC)

Dan, did you play Punchout a lot back in the day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

All the time.

Quinn (Pittsburgh)

Dan, I will admit I watched Adrien Broner's Youtube show About Billions and despite the fact that he is not doing it, there is a large presence of marijuana being smoked by his... um... band camp(?). Could Broner in any way be penalized by a commission for this since it is a banned substance and they do take it seriously (as we saw with Chavez)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

If he tests positive then yes and somebody can test positive by inhaling second-hand smoke.

Mike (San Diego)

Any interest in the Ennis vs Jack fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Mild. Step up for Jack at least.

Julian Givens (Dallas/TX)

What rumblings have you heard about Abner Mares fighting Yuriorkis Gamboa and is that a fight that can be made in the future I know recently 50 cent has been working with top Rank and Abner is with GBP?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

There are zero rumblings at this point. Abner fights Aug. 24 vs. Jhonny Gonzalez.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Is Showtime still planning a Sept. 7 show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

At this point, yes.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

Now that Sergio Martinez has publicly said he would fight GGG. Do you think it ever happens?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Doubtful because I dont see HBO accepting Mora as an opponent.

Jacob (Clovis, CA)

Does Baby Jesse wear a TMT onesie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Anything is possible. Like I said before, you must remember that the TMT onesie is the best.

Mike (PA)

Do you see a Seth Mitchell-Chris Arreola fight happening as been rumored?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

The fight is in the works. Both of their promoters told me they are working on it.

Jgg (PR)

dan any chance HBO picks up Haye vs Fury and show it in the afternoon along with cloud vs stevenson on sept 28th

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I think they will look into it but not sure what will happen. I think it's safe to assume that the fight will be on somewhere in the US, quite possibly as an afternoon PPV card.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Do you know when Mrs. Thompson is scheduled to have hip replacement surgery? Flowers are in order from the Fight Freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Chuck (Chicago) [via mobile]

Any word on Andre Wards next fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Probably Sept. 28. From what I am told, the promotional situation with Goossen is being worked out.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: Have you ever had true animosity towards a rude and disrespectful fighter and can you name him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Yes. No.

Roy (Reno)

If a Mitchell-Arreola fight does happen who wins? I think Arreola KO's Mitchell quickly. Seems like a bad fight for Mitchell.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I tend to agree with you. But it's a good fight and I'd like to see it.

Mike (Los Angeles)

DanDaLion any chance Epix will pickup Haye/Fury or Wlad/Povetkin? With these high profile fights, a major network has to pick it up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

No, Epix is not doing either of those fights.

Frank (PHX)

Is Showtime going to be showing any fights on Sho Extreme before the PPV card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

If they handle it like Mayweather-Guerrero there will be televised prelims but on regular Showtime, not Extreme. But same idea.

Todd (Jersey City)

Dan-o-mite! Settle an argument please! Can you rate these 5 HW based SOLEY on their 1-punch knockout power: Wlad, Vitali, Haye, Stiverne, Fury

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Wlad, Vitali, Haye, Stiverne, Fury. Same order you put them in.

Roy (Reno)

Is Canelo strictly a PPV fighter from this point forward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Who knows? It all depends on results.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Given Broners antics, lifestyle, and his small purse $ compared to Floyd, Pac, bigger names, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he goes broke or is fighting solely for the paycheck before Floyd

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

There is zero question in my mind that if Broner continues down the path he is on he will end up broke.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Predictions on tonight's Olusegun Ajose/Hank Lundy, Mickey Be/John Molina and Jack/Ennis

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I think Ajose beats Lundy. Bey over Molina and Jack over Ennis.

Steve (Minneapolis, MN)

Who will be programming ESPN2 Friday Night Fights next year or is the series in danger of never returning?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

FNF will be back next year from what the folks in Bristol have told me. Brian Kweder has done a great job with the final few shows he handled this season and will be handling it next season as well.

Chris (Tempe)

Dan, Are there any companies producing boxing cards of today's stars? Seems like there's an opportunity there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Every now and then you see guys pop up in a series of cards with multiple sports. A few years ago in the Topps Co-Signers series there were a ton of active guys with autographed cards. I bought a bunch of them. My favorite has Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez on it and it is signed by both of them. Ringside Round 1 and Round 2 sets came out in last year or two that featured some of the active fighters and plenty of top retired stars. The brand new Panini Golden Age set has a smattering of fighters, including SRL, Hearns, Frazier, John L. Sullivan and others.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I'm going to take a picture of the Vazquez-Marquez card after the chat and tweet it, so check it out.

Fabian (San Francisco)

compare floyd outside the ring at 23 to broner

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Way more under control and had fought way better opposition.

P71 (hartford)

What do you anticpate unfolding in the Pac-Rios fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

A helacious war.

Dave (RI)

Dan, If you were in charge over at HBO, what would your short term strategy be to retake the top spot over Showtime? Long term i think thy have no choice but to bury the hatchet with GB, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Short term means nothing but long term, yes, HBO MUST work things out with GB. GB has too deep and talented a stable to simply ignore them.

jgg (PR)

dan will the china undercard next week be shown on toprank.com

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Good question. I am not sure. I will have to find out but I would assume so.

Mike (PA)

Why do you think Roy Jones Jr's skills faded so fast, while Hopkins got better with age?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Roy was never a technically sound fighter. He fought all wrong, never had a good jab. He relied on sick speed and relflexed. BHop has the proper technique and is well-schooled. So when Roy's reflexes eroded a little and he became a lot more hittable he paid the price. BHop always paid attention to defense and his technical skills were on point so he is still able to rely on the fundamentals that Roy ignored. It has meant a faster fade for Roy and a lot of longevity for BHop.

Duff (Boston, MA)

I've seen a lot of criticism of the Pacquiao-Rios fight that I really don't understand. I know that Rios just lost to Alvarado, but are people forgetting that we are less than a year removed from Rios winning their first fight by TKO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Anyone critical of the fight I dont get. All I know is it is going to be a great fight. Rios lost a close decision in the fight of the year. So?

aaron (Ann Arbor)

whats next for Mikey Garcia? where do you have him ranked P4P?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

He will probably challenge Rocky Martinez for his 130 title in the fall. I do not have him ranked in my top 20.

James (Portland, ME)

Any Khan/Alexander update?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Funny you should ask. I have an item going up in my blog on it basically about how Schaefer is going to Dubai on Saturday to meet with people about a deal and to look at venues for a Dec. 7 fight there.

Lance (Atlantic City)

Is there any chance that the Geale/Barker winner fights GGG next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I would say almost no chance if it is Geale but a better chance if it is Barker.

Frank (PHX)

I heard there was over 100 media members for yesterdays "big announcement" call, thats crazy to me considering it was for the annoucement for the co-main event. This event is going to be a BEAST!!

Brian (Boston)

Big fight fan but have never seen a card live. Do you think the FNF card would be a good show tonight? The price is right with the tickets.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Tonight's FNF is a very solid show. If you've never been by all means go check it out. You will have fun.

slam (mia)

dan whats so hard to understand. Rios lost to Alvarado so Alvarado should be fighting pacman not Rios.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

That is not how it works. Who cares if Pacquiao fights Rios or Alvarado? Pacquiao-Rios and Alvarado-Provodnikov is just fine with me. Two great fights.

Mark (Chicago, IL)

Don't forget B-Hop's obsession with taking care of his body/fitness. Certainly hasn't hurt him in the longevity department.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

That is true but Roy has also taken care of himself. Another thing that badly hurt Roy that cannot be understated was when he went from heavyweight back down to light heavyweight. I think that took a massive toll on his body that really hurt him.

Adrian (NJ) [via mobile]

When can we expect Nonito Donaire to be back in the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

This fall. But there is no set date yet.

Jared (Los Angeles)

Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. is moving up to Super Middleweight to fight Brian Vera because he is having trouble making 160. But he has said he wants to go back down to 160 after this fight. Is that because he wants one more crack at Sergio?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Probably but saying it and doing it are two different things.

Mike (NJ)

Dan, after getting knocked cold, wouldn't you agree that Manny should face a lower level fighter than Rios? I have a funny feeling that Manny loses again in November.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No, I wouldnt say that.

Jared (Los Angeles)

Andre Ward has been inactive for 10 months. Is he physically healthy? What do you think his next move will be?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

He's been inactive because he had an injury and had shoulder surgery. He is back training and will be back, probably on Sept. 28.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Can't believe people are bashing rios as an opponent for pac...the dude just got put to sleep in his last fight. Be thankful he's not fighting some bum on a $70 PPV

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Finally, some reason.

Ron (Midtown Manhattan)

I thought there was a rumor that Judah next fight would be on the Mayweather Undercard.... Also I heard Amir Khan as well

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

You need better sources.

V (CA)

This is also what makes Floyd so great. He has great speed and reflexes (although not as great is RJ in his prime) AND great technique and defense.

javier (PR)

dan how far is amway stadium from universal studios I plan on going to the fight on saturday and then go to Universal on Sunday

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I believe the arena is in downtown and the theme parks are probably about 30 minutes outside of downtown.

James (Portland, ME)

Now that it's official, any Garcia-Matthysse prediction?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Even before the fight was made I thought Matthysse by a KO.

Tom (Yonkers, NY)

Dan, what are the odds of the Garcia/Matthysse winner getting Mayweather next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Strong in my view. That is clearly one of the reasons the fight was put on the card.

Mickey (Chicago)

I've never thought about collecting them myself, but those Hearns & Leonard cards you tweeted were pretty awesome. How hard is it to find quality cards for your collection?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Thanks. Those Hearns and Leonard cards are from a brand new set and can easily be found on ebay for a buck or two. As for the older, rarer cards in high grade condition they are tough as hell to find and it is quite satisfying when you do.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Excellent point by Charlie...say what you will about Floyd but atleast he waited until he was a major PPV star making tens of millions per fight before he started burning his money (literally). Not to mention I think broner already has more kids than floyd (4) and he's 23 for Gods sake.

clay (chattanooga)

DTM, Odlanier Solis fights in a couple weeks. think he can still be a player in the HW (not counting Wlad or Vitali) division after that knee surgery? thought he looked to have some legit talent for a big man now a days!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I dont agree about Solis. I dont think he will ever come close to living up to his potential.

James (Colorado)

In all of your years in boxing what's the greatest fight you've ever witnessed? In person.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Read this: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8834349/dan-rafael-frequently-asked-chat-questions-part-2

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Check out my feature on the union of Miguel Cotto and Freddie Roach, who tells me he was surprised that Cotto wanted to hire him: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9492117/can-freddie-roach-help-reclaim-miguel-cotto-career

Davis (Boston)

If Alexander doesnt want to fight in dubai who do you think takes that fight vs khan? Malignaggi rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I think the fight will happen. The question is where?

Jared ( New Smyrna Beach, Fl)

Mr. Dan, lotta' people saying that the pressure and body work Canelo applies will the the catalyst that makes Floyd suddenly "get old" in the ring...see any chance of that happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

There is always that chance but opponents have been saying for years that they can win by pressuring Floyd and it has yet to happen.

izzy (wales)

how does canelo get a superfight with mayweather when trout was robbed in their fight? i know money is money, but where is the justice?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

A) Trout was not robbed. Canelo won fair and square. B) Canelo fight is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY bigger. It's pretty simple.

jcs (edmonton, AB, Canada)

Odlanier Solis = Sam Peter, though Peter probably fought better guys.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

And Peter also won a heavyweight title before he got lazy and complacement. Solis has been that way since he turned pro.

Horvatin (Canada)

Is Richard Schaefer married? Does he have any kids? I only ask because the guy is clearly a tireless workaholic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Yes, he is married to a lovely woman and they have three sons.

JerseyCityBoxer (Jersey City, NJ)

Dan, I just rewatched the Prince Naseem VS Kevin Kelly fight and OMG! Naseem was the man!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

One of my all-time favorite fights. I'd put that in my personal top-10 fights I have enjoyed most.

Tom (Yonkers, NY)

Thanks for sharing the Tito/Jones Jr poster on twitter. That was my first fight in person. MSG needs to step up and get more big fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

It's hard to do a fight at MSG because it so expensive and the dates are hard to come by because MSG has three pro sports teams playing there and a ton of other activity.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Put the Prince in the HALL!

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Agreed. I've been voting for him for years and have written extensively about why I believe he should be voted in.

clay (chattanooga)

DTM, nice piece on Freddie training Cotto. i've always enjoyed Freddie's brute honesty as a trainer when it seems you normally just get a lot of hype about their own man from most.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Thanks. Freddie is honest as hell with his fighters. I think he learned that from how honest Eddie Futch was with him when Eddie told Freddie to retire and he didn't and fought a few more fights and lost most of them and took some beatings, which he believes is one of the reasons for his Parkinsons. He knew Eddie was being honest with him and he knows he should have listened to him when he told him to retire. Freddie does the same thing with his fighters.

Greg (Richmond, VA) [via mobile]

Novice fight freak here, is the Smith-Molina fight worthy of getting on the Sept 14 card? I thought they were boring fighters

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

It's a mandatory title fight with two two good fighters who are not the most exciting. But it would likely be the opener of a stacked card AND since Mayweather has Ishe Smith and is going to have one TV slot for one of its fights it makes the most sense.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I've had a bunch of people asking why I vote for Hamed for the HOF. Here is one of the pieces in which I explain why he should be a HOFer: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/tag/_/name/naseem-hamed

Randy (Laughlin)

Noticed it is Vitali Klitschko's birthday. Any news on his negotiations for the Stiverne defense ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Yes, today is his 42nd birthday (same age as me!). They are still negotiating the Stiverne mandatory and if they dont make a deal it will go to a purse bid in the coming weeks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I have written a ton of items for my blog this week so if you missed any they are all right here: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Uncle Drew (Ohio)

Dan im your long lost son take take with you to the fight September 14th

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I have only one son and he is 3 months old.

Nick (NYC)

dan - have you heard whether L. Merchant is on the calendar to work any upcoming fights for HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

No, although he is working the July 27 HBO2 Macau show that Top Rank is producing and HBO2 is airing.

Mike (DC)

Is Bhop set for 9/21? Barclays again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

No, Oct. 19 in AC.

James (Colorado)

Any word on Shane Mosely's next fight? Please God tell me he's going to retire.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

There's been some talk of a fight in Australia against Mundine. Schaefer has mentioned him maybe against Broner. He'll get something coming off the win over Cano. I wish he'd retire but he is not ready.

V (CA)

Fantasy fight: Naz vs Donaire at 126, who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Hamed.

Marc (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey Dan! Your thoughts on the Cruz/Salido fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Decent fight but to me, nothing to get overly excited about. Salido is old and basically shot. Cruz is just a guy.

Scott (Pittsburgh)

Do you think there should be a Super Heavyweight division in the pros?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

No.

Jason (Boulder, CO)

Is your passport in order for your journey to Macau in November?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

My passport is ready to roll.

JB (Toronto)

Any idea how Roach came to be trained by Eddie Futch? That would be like Freddie taking on a club fighter into his stable of stars.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I dont know how they wound up together but in his heyday Freddie was a solid guy who made great TV fights. He had a ton of fights on ESPN and was a borderline contender.

Scott (Raleigh)

Agree; Hamed too fast for Donaire

James (Colorado)

Which fight are you looking forward to the most this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

There are a lot. Sept. 14 card for sure. Pac-Rios obviously. Alvarado-Provodnikov, assuming it gets made.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Who do you prefer on commentary, Larry or Max?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I love 'em both.

Berndawg (CHI)

Im calling it right now, i see a daily 20 pack coming before the end of the summer....

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

So much pressure, B$.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

I interrupt this chat to provide an important announcement for all Freaks. NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steven (Kingsport)

Don't even understand the controversary on Hamed to the Hall, only loss is to a prime Barrerra, was the 1st big money star at Bantamweight, knockout % >80% against good competition.

Steve (Denver)

What was your opinion of the Trayvon Martin decision?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

What's that got to do with boxing?

Andy (Seattle, WA)

What was the last co-main event this good on a major PPV? They are seriously the two fights I would have made if I had all the power. Got to hand it to Mayweather/Golden Boy

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I dont think there has ever been a PPV in history with as good of a top 2 fights. Both are A+ fights and in my view the two fights I wanted to see made most in the whole sport and they are both made AND on the same card. Credit where it is due.

Jackson (IA)

What should I do with my Microsoft stock?---Steve in Denver Questions

Charles (Portland, OR)

Dan, don't you think most people who were interested in Matthysse v. Garcia already would be buying the Sep. 14 PPV? My point being that adding these two, while it being a great fight, is still appealing to just mostly boxing fans. I don't think this thing breaks the record, maybe 2 million tops.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

The point is there will be millions of casual fans watching the PPV and millions of people who have never bought a PPV watching at a party or at a friend's house or whatever. And if the fight is good it helps create new fans and exposes these guys to them and help build them and introduce millions who dont know them to a guy who could be Floyd's next opponent. It was not put on the card with the idea that on its own all of a sudden it's going to bring another couple of hundred thousand buys. It's an investment in the sport. It's about giving consumers real bang for their hard-earned buck.

Frank (PHX)

Any update on Jesse Vargas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

His manager, Cameron Dunkin, turned down a fight with Abregu on HBO on the Sept. 7 Chavez-Vera undercard.

William (Cleveland)

What was your opinion of Terrell Gausha's anti-American comments in the wake of the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman verdict?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

They were not "anti American." He expressed his opinion and that is his right AS AN AMERICAN.

Homer (OH)

Dan, you don't seem like the rap music type, but from a hip-hop fan myself, Broner's music is pretty bad.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Believe it or not there is a lot of rap music I do like and listen to. Broner's, however, is not part of that play list!

Jason (Boulder, CO)

Do you find your "celebrity" status at fights and in the casino annoying, or do you enjoy interacting with the fans?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I enjoy talking with boxing fans and do so A LOT when I am at fights. But it is not a good idea to come over right after the fight when I am pounding out my story.

Roger (OH)

Dan, pretty pumped about the 1 week FNF extension. Looks to be a really good card too. I know Tyson is promoting the card, but which of the fighters in particular does he promote? And are there any other significant names in Tyson's stable yet?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Tyson's company has Argenis Mendez, who has a 130 title and is in the main event as well as Marrero, who is on the undercard fighting for a vacant interim 126 title. Here is some more detail: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9484274/mike-tyson-strikes-deal-promote-aug-23-friday-night-fights-card

Jackson (IA)

Should I have this mole removed? ---Steve in Denver questions

Frank (PHX)

I'm hyped that GB included Mathysse/Gacia on the card, i'm just surprised that they didn't do it at a different site like the Barclays and have it included as a split site telecast on the PPV. Was that ever mentioned as a possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

No. If it was going to be on the show it was going to be at the MGM with the main event.

Omar (Sydney)

What should I get my mom for her birthday? Steve in Denver.

Joydeep (Philippines)

Will Teddy Atlas and Mike Tyson be avoiding each other?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I dont know.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Can't wait for the Tyson-promoted FNF. How often does Teddy Atlas come into such close proximity to Iron Mike these days? A live mic is gonna be fun ...

Adrian (NJ) [via mobile]

What's the latest on Lamont peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Not a thing.

Jason (Charlotte)

Where will u be on oct 19 Denver for a possible Alvarado / Provo fight or AC for BHOP?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

TBA.

p71 (hartford)

Do you think the guy that shelled out that ridiculous number for the Klitchko-Povetkin purse will see a return?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

No. I dont think there is anway possible way they make back the $23 million. That is a MASSIVE nut to cover. Even if the gate was $5 million (and it wont be close to that) they still have another $18 million to go. There are also expenses keep in mind besides just the purses so it's really more than $18 million to go. US TV might bring $1 millionish. The Klitschko RTL deal brings them probably about $6 millionish a fight. But the Klitschkos dont control this fight. But let's say a German network (RTL or ARD) did pay the 6 or even 10 million, they still have a ways to go. The rest of the world TV rights wont even come close to that. Maybe they drum up $5 million in sponsors and they are still not there. It's impossible in my view.

craig (houston)

Dan, what's your favorite piece of sporting memorabilia that you own?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I have a cornerman jacket from Arturo Gatti that was used in the fight with De La Hoya that Gatti signed. There is a blood stain on the jacket.

Omar (Sydney)

Donaire/Darchiniyan what's haappening?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It's the fight Top Rank and Donaire's manager want to make. HBO, as I understand it, will accept the fight. The big thing will be to work out the weight. Donaire not so keen to go to 122. Might have to be at 126. We shall see.

Steve ((Denver))

Whats your view of the macroeconomic climate of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) and how does human rights issues in that country factor in to the seemingly progressive movement toward international relations?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Grieg (Hall of the Mountain King)

Have you given any thought to having someone clone Gatti using the DNA from the blood stain?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

LOL!! You are sick.

Scott (Raleigh)

So don't they KNOW they are going to lose money? Or did they just WAY overestimate TV rights/gate? You make it look so simple....and these boneheads are gonna get cooked!

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I am not sure what they know but there are some people with massive amounts of money who just want to put on the event and be involved. If I ever won the Powerball for a couple of hundred million I'd troll the organizations and pick up fights for fun at purse bid and put 'em on in my backyard just for the hell of it.

V (CA)

What was the promoters reasoning for such a high bid?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I have no idea.

Francisco Luna (Houston)

Hey Dan, Who should get credit for the Sept 14 undercard ...golden boy or mayweather???

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Ultimately, Mayweather had to sign off on it.

Anthony (Texas)

Any news on Andre Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Ummm he fights next week.

Armand (New Orleans)

Are you even excited about the Klitshcko-Povetkin fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

I don't know if I'd say "excited" but it's a fight that should happen. I think Klitschko wins pretty easily. But he is the best guy out there Klitschko has yet to fight and Povetkin had ducked him for so long it needs to happen.

Frank (PHX)

With all the records this mega fight event is breaking and the real good possibility it does 2mil ppv buys, doesn't it seem logical Mayweather and Canelo do a rematch if not during cinco de mayo weekend then next yr in September again regardless of what the result of the first fight is?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

It will depend how the fight goes. If it's good and competitive and there is public demans, sure, a rematch could happen.

Brett (Minneapolis)

Duane Ford LOVES Steve from Denver.

Allen (Nor Cal)

Is Sean O'Grady still working as a commentator? Have you ever met him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I haven't seen him do any fight cards in several years so I don't think so. But I have met him. Very nice guy. I always enjoyed him on USA's Tuesday Night Fights.

Roger (OH)

Dan, any word on whether Showtime will carry the BHop fight? I know you mentioned a couple weeks ago that you wouldn't be shocked if that ended up on one of the new GBP FS1 cards.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I know GB and Showtime are in discussions. It'll come down to money and when it's all said and done I believe Showtime will wind up showing the fight.

Homer (OH)

Dan, I've been wondering, where had Golovkin been for years? I mean, he won a medal in the 2004 Olympics but only started to build a buzz 7, 8, 9 years later? He doesn't have many fights for a 9 year vet too. What gives?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

He didnt turn pro right after the Olympics. He first was fighting for Universum in Germany and moving along very nicely. Then he got bogged down with Universum, which was going out of business and he was leaving them and it got ugly. He had a layoff because it, wound up fighting in Panama and some out of the way fights before hooking up with K2. It took some time to get his situation sorted out and get him to America.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I still can't believe GB put such a great fight on this PPV card. This goes directly against the logic that only the main event counts. I hope this works out and becomes a trend.

Anthony (Sacramento )

I have an awesome Topps Signature card of Calderon and Arce. I Love my boxing card collection almost as much as my Ring Magazine collection.

Mike C. (Portland, Oregon)

Any updates on Vasyl Lomachenko? Has he, or is he planning on turning pro soon?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

He will turn pro and is in negotiations with American promoters. He is probably headed to Top Rank.

Mike (Los Angeles)

I said it before and I'll say it again. Schaefer is earning every penny with the hard work he's doing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

HARD WORK! DEDICATION!

Poole (Charlotte)

DTM, been trying to think of a logical next move for Khabib Allakhverdiev, who has the promotional rights on him?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Top Rank.

David ( Cape Canaveral)

Gotta' a girl over painting my dining room, ran outta paint, had to run to the Depot, come back and the chat is still on. Theres only ONE KING FREAK!!

George (Penn)

Dan Everyone is giving Schaefer all the credit. Do you think De La Hoya deserves some too?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

No. He didn't really do anything.

Roger (OH)

Do you see Lomachenko as the type of fighter who will make such a seamless transition to the pro game, that he could easily be fighting for a title within his first 10 fights?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

He is pro ready based on seeing him in the amateurs. If he wins, he will be fighting for a title inside 10 fights for sure.

Nick (NYC)

Hey Dan don't you agree that Michael Spinks not being in the HOF is a travesty not spoken enough about in boxing circles? The guy was arguably the greatest Light Heavy of all time, first guy to beat Holmes which was a very big deal back then - the Tyson fight his only loss appears to have defined what has been a great HOF worth career. thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

I'd agree but there is one problem -- he is in the HOF. He was inducted in 1994.

Super Dave (Wisconsin)

Dan, serious question. Where/can do you find boxing cards for sale in public? All the card shops I go to don't have anything, and I don't particularly want to shop exclusively online. Are there actual sets? Or just groups of cards in other sets?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Ebay is a great place for stuff. I was at a huge card show in Chantilly, VA last weekend and there was boxing stuff around. There are many boxing-only sets that have been made thru the years and there are also boxing cards in sets that contain cards of all kinds of athletes. So both. For example, I am a huge fan of the boxing cards from the Panini sets that were made from the 60s thru the 80s. They have all kinds of sports figures in them but each set has several boxers also. There is an early 80s Panini set that has rookies of Hagler, Hearns, Holmes, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfredo Gomez and Benitez in it. Awesome set.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Here's the update on Alexander-Khan in my blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/4675/might-dubai-host-alexander-khan

Mike (Boston)

Don King used to put on PPV's in the 90's on Showtime with Tyson, Chavez, Trinidad and Christy Martin fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

He put on a lot of great PPVs, definitely. I don't think any of them had a stronger top 2 fights though than Sept. 14.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Is there any way not to describe Ken Hershman's stewardship of HBO Boxing as disappointing? A failure, even?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Losing Mayweather and then booting Golden Boy obviously are not on his plus side at all. They are major negatives in my view. On the plus side, HBO had the two best fights of the year so far in Alvarado-Rios 2 and Bradley-Provodnikov and has Pacquiao-Rios and Alvarado-Provodnikov on deck. He has also made Golovkin a priority. So there is good and bad.

Mike (Chicago)

Dan, any interest in the Chisora vs Scott bout tomorrow? Any predictions? Thank you.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Mild. As I wrote in my blog preview of the fight I think M**** S**** wins.

Tavaris (New Orleans)

Hey Dan...If Floyd is wins in September. Who would you favor as his next opponent. I would say Devon Alexander if he gets pass Khan. He has a better resume then Danny or Lucas no matter who the winner of that fight would be.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

If he beats Canelo cleanly, I'd like to see him with the Garcia-Matthysse winner.

Mike C. (Portland, Oregon)

Ken Hershman deserves scorn for, if nothing else, the truck. Was he also to blame for getting rid of the best opening music in sports television?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

I forgot about that. Thanks for reminding me.

Dave (RI)

Dan, over/under on when HBO starts working with GB again. 1 year from today.

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Under.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Who is considered the all-time PPV king? Would it be De La Hoya or Tyson?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

De La Hoya sold more overall PPVs and generated more money all told so Oscar at this point. Oscar had the benefit of having had several more PPV events than Tyson. I haven't looked at the stats in quite some time but I would imagine that Floyd will soon be there and eventually surpass Oscar.

rick (austin tx)

any word on who canelo has as his strength and conditioning coach?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

Not sure who he is working with.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

What up Dan, really excited now even more with PPV its gonna be epic. People will have to show up early now cause usually at the fight night parties, people show up and rarely pay any attention to the undercards, im like the only one who knows in the fighters in the undercards.

Tim (Philly)

The reason Sept 14 is so big is because it's 4 guys all coming off big wins, who are fighting the best possible person out there. The difference is a lot of us were skeptical those fights would be made let alone both on the same night!

Omar (Sydney)

Where would you put the Thompson post price fight interview in best post fight interviews. It was like he just spent 20 minutes with Mrs Thompson.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

One of all-time most hilarious post-fight interviews ever.

DEE (NY)

Do you think there could be a rematch of Gabriel Rosado and J'leon Love coming up soon due to the controversy after the last fight and if so could it be made for the Sept. 14th card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I could see there being a rematch but not on Sept. 14. Love is suspended right now anyway for the failed test.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Is Garcia and/or Matthysse entitled to any cut of the PPV or is that strictly split between Floyd and Canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

I dont know every detail of their deal but I am quite sure they are getting career-high purses and that is it.

Adrian (NJ) [via mobile]

Was Hatton/pacquiao the last fight between tr/gb before the cold war took place?

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

No. They actually made a deal in 2011 (not a mandatory that went to a purse bid) for Top Rank to promote Gamboa vs. Ponce De Leon. The last time a TR fighter fought a GB fighter was the result of a purse bid last year when TR won the bid for Vanes Martirosyan to face Erislandy Lara in a 154 eliminator that ended up a draw.

Tim (Philly)

At this point any 140 and 147 fighter at TR would be better off at GB...True or false?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

False. That is a silly comment. GB has a great stable of talent at those weights but TR ain't exactly chopped liver. They have Pacquiao, Rios, Alvarado, Bradley, Marquez and even guys like Abregu, Jessie Vargas, unbeaten Mayfield, Khabib, who has a belt.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Have you ever met or gotten to know Matthysse outside the ring? For Danny's sake, I hope Angel Garcia tones it down and doesn't give Matthysse extra incentive to knock his son's head off.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

I've met him, very respectful guy. It'll be hard for Angel to say nasty things about him, especially because even if he does, Matthysse won't understand it anyway unless Angel screams at him in Spanish.

Brock (Illinois)

Do you think Alexander will ever get a big fight in the STL again? He seems to be forced on the road after getting close home decisions.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

I see no reason why Alexander wouldnt fight there in the future. Nobody "forced" him to go on the road. He got decisions he deserved to win in my view.

Ray (Dillon)

The worst thing about the TR-GB feud is that we had to watch Vanes Martirosyan vs. Erislandy Lara.

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

LOL.

Owen [via mobile]

Any word on Mayweather-Alvarez being shown in theaters? I love that

Dan Rafael
  (3:07 PM)

Yes, it will be.

jsfenton (seattle)

Dan the Man. Being a broadcaster have you ever been to a closed circuit ppv event? I have tickets for the Mandalay Bay,on the 14th what do know about how early I should get there for general admission tickets?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

I have never actually watched a closed circuit fight. I have either watched on PPV at home or been at the fight.

Adrian (NJ) [via mobile]

Is CBS thinking of putting on more boxing cards besides that past Santa Cruz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

I think we will see more fight cards, yes.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Danito, I don't see Jennings or Wilder in your rankings... Where do you see then on the HW top 10?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Neither belongs in the top 10 yet. They are unranked.

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Here's the story on the Chavez-Vera fight: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9486884/julio-cesar-chavez-jr-face-brian-vera-year-away-boxing-losing-middleweight-world-title

Chuck (Chicago) [via mobile]

I LOVE FNF !!!!!!

Shelby (Carson City)

Dan, have you ever considered wearing a powdered wig?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

These are my readers.

Cam (Canada)

Should writers be consultants for promoters? Or is that crossing the lines of journalism?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 PM)

Obviously, it's a conflict of interest.

Rob (Westbury, NY)

Can you think of a time when a boxer got knocked out and lost his title while clowning or showboating like Anderson Silva did? I was talking about it with a friend and couldn't remember that ever happening in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Although it wasnt for a title, Nate Campbell did it and got waxed by Robbie Peden several years ago.

Michael C (Houston, TX)

Is Donaire a dad yet? Seems like Rachel has been preggers forever.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Yes, their son was born on Tuesday.

Ticco (Boston) [via mobile]

I just wanted to say that's it is great to see Iron Mike getting into the promotion game! I always thought he would be a good trainer, but it's cool to see him getting into the business side of boxing. What are your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Happy to see him involved. He is such a massive name that having him involved, if he does it the right way, can be a huge benefit for the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

HEre's my look at tonight's Bey-Molina fight on ShoBox: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/4639/bey-enters-comeback-bout-with-molina

Al (York Pa)

Why hasn't Steiglitz approached Froch about getting together for their belts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Because Stieglitz has a big TV contract in Germany that they see no need to risk in a tough fight.

Duane Ford (Optical office)

Sept 14 #TheOne card is terrible, full of low class fighters.

Mario (Houston, TX)

Any news on Gary Russel's next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

TBA.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

If I say I'm with The Money Team do I still pay $74.99 for HD?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

GREAT QUESTION!

Tim (Philly)

Have you asked GB what their plan is with Wilder? He's got to take a real plunge soon right? Realistically, after his next fight who do you think would be a reasonable opponent for him?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

He is fighting Liakhovich coming up and after that they would like to step him up big time later this year.

Frank (PHX)

DTM, my friend and I have been arguing over what the ring size will be for the May/Canelo fight? He states Mayweather negotiated to have it bigger than the normal size Nevada usually has for fights, can you please enlighten him?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

As far as know it will be the standard Nevada ring size, 20x20. The commission does not make exceptions for that.

the duder (PDX, OR)

DTM: Love the pic of you and Emanuel Steward up on your twitter right now. When was it taken?

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

Thanks. That was taken I believe at the weigh-in for Martinez-Williams 2 at Caesars Atlantic City.

Brandon (Vegas)

Dan, what's your thoughts on the Rigo situation with HBO? Seems like a double standard since they still regularly put on Dawson and Ward, two fighters who bring the same exact excitement level as Rigo

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

HBO is entitled to make those decisions. I have no problem with it declining a Rigo fight. Rigo can go fight anywhere he wants or anywhere Top Rank can make a fight. It is not the right of a fighter, no matter how good he is, to be on HBO.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I liked the swipes Richard took at TR with the Butter Bean comments almost as much as I love the irony that he fought on many of Oscar's under cards.

Paul (Concord, CA)

Dan, to your knowledge, does Duane Ford know how the fans perceive his judging skills?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

I dont know and I dont care.

Adrian (NJ) [via mobile]

Do you know who might be featured on the next 2 days on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Not sure who is next but I know they have one coming on Andre Ward and Mikey Garcia.

Saul (Toronto)

Any word on Stevenson vs Cloud?

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

Read this from yesterday: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/4637/stevenson-cloud-deal-is-near

Greg (Canada)

HBO can do whatever want with Rigo, but if they sing the praises and continue to try to sell Terence Crawford for being entertaining because of his slick, high level skills and abilities, they can prepare for being yelled at. I'm sure they don't care, but if people can't be upset on the internet then what is the point of this whole thing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

I agree with what you said in general but keep in mind one this: Crawford is an American who speaks English who comes at a much lighter price tag.

Brandon (San Diego)

Gotta give props to Richard Schaeffer and GBP. They are putting on the cards the fans want to see!

Paul (Salem, Oregon)

Is Adrien Broner insane? His timeline should have Golden Boy worried.

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

I know for a fact that GB is not happy with him about that stuff.

Anthony (PA)

Dan- If they had made Tyson-Foreman, would that have had more PPV than Oscar-Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 PM)

That would have been ab absolutely astronomical PPV event.

John (Allentown,PA)

Dan, I saw in one of your blogs the other day that you expect Stephenson/ Cloud to happen in Montreal with Ward on the undercard. At this stage of his career, Ward is ok with undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

Ward is not going to be on an undercard. If he fights also on Sept. 28 it would be a split site show.

Tim (Philly)

What timeline are people referring to with Broner?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

Twitter.

Ted (Boston)

I feel the boxing chat has went long enough without a GGG mention. #killer

Big Tweet (Philadelphia)

Is Mike Tyson going to look to promote more in the future ? or is this something he's testing the waters with ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

Well he is now a partner in a promotional company and seems to be taking it seriously so it is more than testing the waters.

Omar (Sydney)

How's your kid's sleeping coming along?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Sleeping 9-plus hours a night. Sleeping like a champ.

the duder (PDX, OR)

Are you approaching the longest chat you've ever done?

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Not even close.

Brandon (San Diego)

I leave the office for a few hours to go to a business meeting and DTM is still going strong! Hard work! Dedication!

Mark (Glasgow, Scotland)

All over twitter Floyd Mayweather is seemingly been lauded as the man that made the fight. Unless I'm mistaken surely he had very little impact and it was Golden Boy (Schaefer) to thank?

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

Mayweather had to approve it because of how expensive it is and it is his event.

JoJo (NYC)

Dan, what are your predictions for the Ajose-Lundy fight tonight? Great work by ESPN to put that fight together.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

I like the fight a lot and look forward to seeing Ajose back in action. Lundy is fighting heavier then when he was at his best but Lundy is always solid. He might be able to give Ajose some problems with the movement. I think Ajose wins but I think it will be a solid fight.

Ted (Boston)

Is Matthysse the most exciting fighter in boxing right now?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

Definitely up there. There are a lot of exciting guys. GGG, Matthysse, Garcia, Pacquiao, Rios, Alvarado, Maidana, Provodnikov, Stevenson, Kovalev, to name a few.

JGG (PR)

Dan is there any update on who will face Dulorme on aug 17th on HBO latino

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

Frankie Figueroa.

Newt (Jacksonville)

At this point, I'm expecting Schafer to produce that often-talke-about second Ricky Hatton for Sept. 14 ...

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

Impossible. There is only one Ricky Hatton.

Paulie (Vegas)

Dan, what's the deal with Adrien Broner? He's the only guy that makes Oscars tweets sound intelligent.

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roy (Reno)

WOW! Big props to GB! I am more excited for Lucas-Danny than I am for Money-Canelo.

Everlast76 (Montreal zoo)

any possible names for Jean Pascal's return to action ?!?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

He is fighting Bute once Bute is healthy. Supposed to be December or January.

Mitch (Oakland)

Planning for a large Sunday morning boxing viewing party in Beijing on Sunday Sept. 15.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Is it Sept. 14 yet?

Chuy (San Diego)

Dan, Do you think Mayweather/GB Promotions would pony up some more money to get Broner-Maidana and just completely blow our heads?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

Not happening.

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

Almost a 4-hour chat today! Thanks Fight Freaks. Hope you check out all the stories and blogs from the week and enjoy the FNF and ShoBox cards tonight. Have a great weekend and talk to you next week. Peace.
