Hey guys, keep sending in your questions/comments. We'll get rolling in a sec.
The queue is loaded up with OU stuff, so this might be pretty OU-centric, but all Big 12-related questions welcomed.
Jake, congrats on the new job. Any word on DJ Ward?
Thanks, Dave. Ward has a spleen issue. Sounds like they're still trying to figure out what's going on with him and how football will affect it. It's scary anytime you're dealing with organs, and if this goes on very long, good chance Ward redshirts. Hearing good things about Dimon/Obo, so OU should be OK at DE either way.
Bigger surprise, the Sooners landing Mark Andrews, or not closing the deal with Ty Barrett?
I was a bit surprised by Barrett's decision. Huge pick up for TCU, which had a monster recruiting weekend overall. Frogs starting to feel the effects of being in a major conference on the recruiting trail?
Know that you are going to be David Ubben's Boss, can you please make him come up here for the Texas game. It is on a Thursday night, broadcast on the mothership!, he can do 2 games in one week! Win Win.
Cyclone Nation loves Ubben
Is Texas being so bad recently hurting big 12 recruiting across the board?
Bit more complex than that. The Big 12 is being hurt by its reputation as a finesse conference. They're not winning those battles for the big-time linemen, especially with the SEC. Really, until the Big 12 proves it can go head to head with the SEC in a national setting, hard to see that changing, either. Especially with Texas A&M's move to the SEC opening up the doors for the likes of Alabama and LSU to recruit the Lone Star State even more.
Do you think that Lache Seastrunk has a ligit chance at the heisman?
It would require Baylor winning the Big 12, or being on the fringe of winning it. But would anyone be surprised if the Bears started out 7-0? Toughest game before that Thursday night home bout with OU in Nov. is a road trip to Manhattan. Bears should be decent favorites in the other first six games.
Congrats on the new job! Ik Quincy is finishing up classes, but how good do you think this guy can be? Could he be a force up front?
Quincy Russell could help, no doubt. He's not Tommie Harris, though, and this expectation that he single handedly will change OU's fate defensively is a bit overblown.
Now that you are evaluating the entire Big12, would you agree that Gabe Lynn is ready for a breakout year and has a great chance to make all-conference by season's end?
Lynn, Russell already make debuts on the chat. Waiting for the first Tim Kish question to complete the trilogy.
Is there no longer going to be any just Sooner themed chats?
My chat will be Big 12 football from now on.
Texas Tech. What do you think the goal should be this year? How do you think the transition will be?
8 wins would be a great year. I'm a believer in Kingsbury. No reason Tech can't get back to competing for the Big 12 title every 3-4 years.
Outside of Colvin, who do else are potential 1st rounders on Offense & Defense?
On OU? You got me.
Rumors have that DJ Ward suffered a career ending injury! Can you validate what happened or not?
Have not heard career-ending, but anytime you're dealing with an internal organ, that's scary.
Which team do you see being the dark horse for the big12 title?
Baylor and Kansas State should not be discounted. If the Bears can knock off OU on that Thur. night game to get to 8-0, then they're a serious player. K-State was picked this low last year -- and look what Bill Snyder did. You can't completely discount them, even though everyone always tries to.
Jake, heard anything from todays Oklahoma drill? Any serious collisions or big time matchups between the OL and DL?
True freshman RB Keith Ford completely trucked DT Jordan Phillips. That's promising or ominous, depending on how you look at it.
Heard rumors of OU looking into a 3-2-6 this year. Have you heard anything about this?
Very possible, especially if they feel like they're better at DB than at DL, which they probably are.
Wow! Big 12 a finesse confrence!.....there are some legendary coaches rolling over in there graves? How does that change? I believe the offense makes it so the defense's have to become db centric and linebacker light. So even the good teams when they go up against the SEC have trouble stopping the run.
You nailed it. Everyone is adapting to winning the Big 12 -- and not the national title.
Jake, with when will OU name the starter? 2 weeks before kickoff?
Maybe even later, though what's the point? Bell will be named the starter. Just a formality.
Kish whiffs on Christian Sam. You're take? To keep it all Big-12y he didn't commit to TCU either. How did he get out of the Big 12?
Those are the kind of players the Big 12 can't let get out of Texas.
Saw frank Shannon up close the other day. This guy looks intriguing. Do you think our lb's will make a difference?
Has a chance to be OU's best defensive position. I like the rotation of Corey Nelson, Frank Shannon and Aaron Franklin. Lot of speed there.
I am glad that they are playing the game of not naming a starter, I think it helps give the team confidence in the other QBs should they be called upon for whatever reason. Smart Coaching.Thoughts?
Worked before. Also keeps Trevor Knight more dialed in.
Congratulations on your new gig. Remember to please all the fans of every team, all at once.Good Luck !!
Think my new saying is going to be, "Yes, I hate your team!"
Team with the strongest defense in the big 12?
TCU by a mile.
Who has the deeper WR core this year? OU or OSU
Nick asking interesting questions... I go with OSU.
Game to watch this year in the big 12?
OU-Texas and Bedlam
Last year all I heard about was Eric striker. What happen to him?
Still picking up the OU defense. Probably a year away. Will help on special teams.
Given you new position, Can you next book be called "I love the Big12, I hate the SEC" ?
Ha, you all would buy it, right?
Any guesses on the % chance we Jaz hands this year? The dude is good.
Bob was pretty hard on Jaz today. Said it would be difficult for Jaz to break into the rotation. From what I've been told, Jaz is on the third tier right now, behind Saunders/Shepard and Metoyer/Neal/Bester
Come on now Jake. What about Baylor-TCU? That ought to be a good one.
Offense vs. Defense. Actually will be. Marquee Big 12 games this year. OU-TX, Bedlam, OU-TCU, OSU-TCU, OU-Baylor, OSU-Texas, Baylor-TCU, Baylor-Texas, TCU-Texas, K-State-Baylor.. probably forgetting a few, but parity in the league will give us some pretty good matchups.
Who is Hatari Byrd most likely to replace in the starting lineup: Quentin Hayes, Gabe Lynn or Julian Wilson?
Hayes or Lynn, especially if they decide to bump Lynn back to nickelback.
Jake, what are the chances the B12 champ has 2 conference losses?
Pretty good. You see any of these teams being 11-1/12-0 good?
Who do you have winning the conference? My early pic was TCU, but I am leaning OU now. Stoops gets it done.
OSU. Schedule favors them.
Were you serious about the 3-2-6 question? I thought that's what we were trying to get away from.
You would have thought, right?
What is your pick for the best big 12 non-conference game?
OU-Notre Dame and TCU-LSU
drum roll Do we even have to say Gabe Lynn's name
How many wins do we OU fans need to hope Mack gets so that he stays another year?
Letting Texas win in the Cotton Bowl for a change would help that cause.
Heard good things of Juco OL St. John and Savage. Do you think that either of them starts this year?
St John hasn't been around, but heard great things about Savage. He helps this o-line. Maybe even starts by October.,
Will you be traveling to a game site every weekend in your new gig? We'll treat you right in Iowa. Come on up.
Ha, sounds good. Best place to eat in Ames?
I don't want to go that far and don't think it will happen. I'm hoping the UT faithful are happy enough to keep Mackie Mack around with 8-9 wins.
Won't happen if Texas gets blasted in Dallas again
Seems like TCU got a few good recruits this weekend. Do they have any chance of getting Myles Garrett?
Sounds like A&M is the one to beat there
Best place to eat is my tailgate, I do it right. If your coming, I'll let you know how to find us.
What is TCU doing on defense that OU, OSU, TX....aren't?
For one, playing an offensive style conducive to helping its defense.
Early prediction on the RRSO? Mack told Trav Haney today that everything was brand new in Austin
All talk until they prove something on the field. Not sure how anyone who's watched the RRR the last two years could pick Texas. What have they shown to suggest they deserve to be picked in that game?
Michael they tackle well and clog running lanes
What is the local feel that OU will adopt the Oregan style of Uni's?
Most OU will do is an alternate jersey or helmet. Will never be Oregon (or Oklahoma State)
How will the early TCU game tell us about the Sooners this year?
Notre Dame will tell more, since it's on the road, and before the TCU game.
If the Big 12 sweeps their SEC games TCU-LSU, TX-OLD MISS,and OSU-Miss State will that help at all this year in recruiting class?
It's a start. But it won't count for much if Georgia wins the national title. I will say this, if TCU and OSU both lose their openers, it will be a disaster of epic proportion for the Big 12. Those are massive games for Big 12 perception.
Is it more likely that Josh Stewart has a drop off year with Tracy Moore back, or both Moore and Stewart have great years due to the other's presence?
Stewart might not have 101 catches. But he could still have 80-90. Be interesting to see how effective OSU is at using both. Cowboys have options at WR.
Am I on the verge of going down as one of the biggest idiiots in recent CFB history?
Let's see how this plays out, but it doesn't look good.
You know that a program is declining when it starts losing recruiting battles to Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech. Well so much for the recruiting prowess of Bedenbaugh and Montgomery.
That was quick
Thank God for that Jake. Who wants to be Oregon or OSU?
OSU won our player poll for who had best unis in the Big 12, and Oregon would win a national poll in a landslide
I have this weird feeling that Cody Thomas is gonna rock. What do you think his chances are at earning the back up QB spot this year? Or even the starter?
No chance to be the starter this year, unless everyone goes down.
But I like Thomas. Heard great things about his arm. Footwork/technique apparently need work.
Do you think Cortez Johnson will lock down the spot opposite Colvin, and provde the Soones with two shutdown corners?
That's asking a lot. Cortez could be solid. Maybe even better than that. But watch out for freshman Stanvon Taylor. He will push Cortez for that job.
THoughts on Hasley leaving TCU? Frogs still have the best D?
TCU has had a terrible start to the preseason, losing two starters already
Aside from Hatari Byrd and Ahmad Thomas, are any of the freshman looking good?
Heard great things about DE Obo Okoronkwo. CB Stanvon Taylor, too. And Keith Ford, who might redshirt because of depth at RB, but can really play.
Which of the following game are we more likely to lose: TCU, Texas Tech, @ Baylor, or @ KSU?
OU? The Baylor game would scare me the most
How are Jordan Phillips and Jordan Wade progressing? How optimistic are you about them and the DL in general?
Not real optimistic. Didn't hear great things about Phillips' summer. He got trucked by Keith Ford in the OK Drill today.
Hearing the redshirt is gone for Stanvon Taylor and that he's being groomed to take over Colvin's spot in 2014.
You're hearing right.
Starting QB. Quincy Russell. Tim Kish. Are we done yet?
You left out Gabe Lynn
Jake, do you think lifetime bans would be adequate for the PEDs? I think you get 1 mess up and after a second youre done
Don't see how they completely clean up baseball by not going to such a policy
My wife is a Sooner. Should I plan to do anything after the Red River "Rivalry" this year or do I assume she will be pissed off an miserable to be around in the afternoon.
Are you a Texas fan? Maybe you'd be best sitting in different sections...
Bob really praised Trey Metoyer the other day. So is he the frontrunner for that 3rd WR spot, assuming we only play 3WR?
Am I, as an OSU fan, wrong in thinking D fields not only let his team down but also the league with his off-field issue? Young people make poor choices I'm sure he's a great kid that just made a mistake, but I still wish he were in uni for the LSU game.
Yeah, me too. TCU will need him, that's for sure.
How much will having Casey Pachal back elevate the Horned Frogs provided he stays out of trouble? Can they take the Big 12 with him at QB?
Gives them the chance to have the kind of offense to complement what should be a championship-caliber defense. So yeah, they could definitely win the Big 12 -- but winning in Stillwater AND Norman won't be easy, which they'll probably have to do to win the Big 12.
Does Trey Metoyer have the year this season that many predicted in 2012?
Depends on what you predicted. He's not going to bring in 70 passes for 900 yards and 9 TDs. But he could be a quality part of this offense, definitely. Still a bright future.
How many wins will Mack Brown need to secure his job for next year?
9 -- at the absolute least.
It sounds like OU is going to slow down the offense a little this year. Are you getting the same feeling, perception from those close to the program? Thanks for all of the old school OU chats, see you next time for the finesse chat.
Ha, thanks Randy. That's not a bad suggestion for a name. Yeah, it sounds like OU is going to slow it down. Fits the style of this offense, which figures to run more. Makes sense with the inexperienced QB, too. They have to do something to help the defense. Not sure this offense is equipped to win 50-49 the way last year's was with all those WRs and an experienced QB.
Seriously Jake...if OU suddenly started wearing funky uni's ala Oregon or OSU, wouldn't that kinda smack of desperation? Schools who wear those types of uni's are 'johnny come latelies' and do it because they don't have tradition to fall back on, at least to a degree. They think it makes them special. Not knocking them; it just doesn't fit OU's history and MO.
Not saying OU should change uniforms. Yes, it would smack of desperation. At the same time, uniforms are getting people like OSU noticed by recruits they weren't getting noticed by before. I think an alternate jersey would alleviate some staleness OU has been suffering from of late.
Based entirely on the preseason expectations of how the league will shake out will Bedlam again be a more meaningful and likely better game than the RRR? Look I have no delusions about Bedlam overtaking the RRR, but for this year and based on the last couple RRR, and Bedlams is it a little bigger again this year?
Could be. If you go by the preseason poll, it probably will be.
Joe C mentioned that there are more renovations coming...Any word on the list being considered?
The one thing I've heard is renovating the boxes on the west side of the stadium/expanding out the press box.
Who are you taking in the TCU-LSU matchup? A big 12 win would be nice.
Not ready to pick the game yet. TCU lost starters, so they have some retooling to do before the game. Must-win for the Big 12.
I believe you're correct on kids being influenced by uniforms; hard for me to fathom why though.
Guys, that's all the time we've got today. Appreciate all the questions/comments. Hope everyone from SoonerNation will follow me over to the Big 12 blog. Chat will be back next Monday. Until then, everyone have a great week.
