Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to potentially the busiest day of the baseball seaosn, although all is quiet in Yankeeland as we head into the final two hours. we'll get started in approximately five minutes
Do you think that Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez will be Banned for Life from MLB for PEDs?
Hi Chris. Thanks for starting me off with an easy one. I have no idea. I'm not a lawyer and I don't profess to be an expert on the CBA, but it seems to me it would be difficult to impose a lifetime ban simply because he's technically a first-time offender and as far as we know, MLB has no positive drug test on him. But it certainly appears as if baseball wants him gone and might go to extraordinary lengths to accomlish that goal
Who will win the AL east?
I feel like Karnak the Magnificent. (ask your parents). Today, I'm guessing TB. but the Red sox and Orioles are for real too. I can say with full confidence it won;t be the Yankees
In my position Cashman should be fired. He has done a poor job with contracts. Signing AJ Tex and CC to contracts none have lived up to and never could have. This year alone letting Ibanez walk, signing Hafner, trading for wells, giving Youk 12 mil etc. If he was GMing the rays of A's he would have a last place team year in and out. The draft picks have been beyond terrible, the "killer B's" are both busts and an impact bat hasnt come up since Cano basically. How can he continually be retained? If it wasnt for the money this team would be the laughing stock of the league
The problem with your scenario is that not being able to sign Ibanez and Russell Martin is because Hal S. had the rubber band on his bankroll practically all winter, and by the time he loosened it up, Youkilis was the best available alternative. The draft picks are another story and as for the Killer B's, young pitchers are always at risk for injury and stalled development. I don;t think Cashman should be fired but there are certainly areas in which he and his staff can improve
Why hasn't a Hughes for McCann type trade been discussed? The Yankees and Braves have other options for SP and the Catcher position respectively. Atlanta needs a SP after Hudson went down. Hughes, with their pitcher friendly ballpark and deep alleys, would do well at Turner Field and could be a long term option depending on how he performs there. For the Yanks, McCann could be a temporary fix at the catcher position after they failed to take Cashman's advice for resigning Russell Martin last offseason. They too can look at extending him as a long term option. Both are quality players but wouldn't get much for them since they'd be free agents at the end of the year. So why not trade a need for a need?
The problem is a basic one: Phil Hughes has drawn little to no interest around the league, which is surprising because away from Yankee stadium he is generally a much better pitcher. Part of the reason is that he will be a free-agent this winter and nobody wants to give up quality for a short-term rental.
I want to see Rivera pitch 1 last time. Yankees play Rays in about 3 weeks. Will Girardi announce which days he'll appear or do I just have to take my chances?
Gotta take your chances. Unless the Yankees are hopelessly out of the race, I can;t see Girardi altering his usage of Mo to placate the fans
I get that it's not in the organization's DNA to waive the white flag but this is one year when they really should. They have attractive pieces to sell and retool the system but won't out of stubbornness. It's not like the stadium is full now. They need to trade short term pain for long term success.
You make a lot of sense but your first sentence tells the whole story. The yankees have never in my memory been trade deadline sellers and to become such now is the last kind of precedent ownership would want to set and the last kind of message it would want to send.
do you see Yanks holding onto Ichiro until he gets 3,000 hits in MLB? not sure if that is wisest strategy given likely his ceiling of 275batting avg and 10 dingers and 20-25 sb - too many old pieces to stay with him and some of the others - would be better off with players like Reddic, Seth Smith, Stanton, Gomez, etc thoughts
Well, that requires roughly another 300 hits and he's already signed through next year. So it means they would have to sign him for 2015 as well, when he will be 42 years old. Don;t see that happening
Hey Wally, can you give any insight on how Austin (Bubba) Jones is looking in the farm system?
Never seen him play. All I know is what the numbers say in the daily minor-=league report: .282, 1 HR, 19 RBI, .361 OBP for SI Yankees
I'm innocent. Trust me. Can't we just get along?
Geez, I believe you, man
In what parallel universe would any team trade Brian McCann for Phil Hughes. McCann is really good and the Braves are making a run. This is a delusional proposal... even moreso than most NYY fans.
I was trying to be nice
Looks like the Yankees front office is throwing the towel?
I don't think so. I think the cold reality is, no one in the league wants to buy what the Yankees have to sell, which makes for a tough trade deadline
There were all idiots if they thought they could get down to 189 million in 1 year. To make that plan work they had to start in 2011. Cashman has been in control since 2005 when they started to do things more like the Red Sox (like they were ever the standard we need to be). His drafting has resulted in 1 starter- Gardner. I think it's time for him to move on. Your thoughts?
you're asking two question here, I think. Yes, the $189M was an ill-conceived plan, esp with the short amount of time Hal gave for it to be implemented. And I believe it is no longer a mandate, merely a "goal," and those can always be adjusted. And no, I don;t think Cashman should be fired. He has had to work under this screwball financial arrangement, which badly hampered his ability to do anythign this winter
when will A-rod get suspended already?
When I find out you'll be the first to know. Promise
Wally, do you see the Yankees pitching Mo in their last home game. No matter the score? The ovation would be nuts
I think that's a real possibility
how do Hughes and Joba feel that Yankees want to trade them but nobody wants them?
I don't know. Maybe I'll ask them
Gone are the days of "World Series title or the season is a failure". I think the measure of a successful year in 2013 is if A-Rod gets a lifetime ban. I know there is a remote shot the Yankees can back-door their way into a Wild Card spot but I think the Steinbrenners and Cashman consider it a big win to rid themselves of the A-Rodbatross. Agree?
Yes, but I do think they want to win, as well. Unfortunately for the fans, that attitude is now side-by-side with "let's keep them interested so we can make as much money as possible." Shedding A-Rod would do a lot for that goal, but it doesn't make the team any better right now
can we have like 50 more stupid AROD questions please?
Yanks motto used to be "Championship or bust" what do you think it is now
With the MLB's witch hunt to suspend A-Rod,does a little part of you feel sorry or is rooting for A-Rod?
Hoinestly, I dont think there's any good guys in this thing on either side. MLB and Selig allowed steroids when they needed them, and cracked down on them when they needed a hammer over the MLBPA. Guys like A-Rod and Bonds and McGwire knowingly cheated for varios reasons, mostly to do with ego and greed. It's hard to root for anyone here
Is Michael Young the most likely deal to make before the deadline? Just saw he would accept a trade here now
keep hearing conflicting things on where he is or is not agreeable to going, but it appears he would be a fit
What do you think of the trade for Alfonso Soriano? Do you think the Yankees will make any minor moves before 4 and if so who do you see them getting? If not do you think that they will make any moves in August? Also do you think Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain will be traded?
I think he helps the lineup but does not cure it. He's a power bat that the team has lacked but is often an all-or-nothing hitter. Still, he gives Cano some protection and gives the other team at least one other hitter to worry about
Funny to hear delusional yanks fans think so highly of Hughes and want Cashman fired. Good think you are keeping them straight Wally. If the Yanks had followed Cashman's advice (not signed A-Rod when he opted out), they'd have had a LOT more money to fill holes, and may have won additional championships.
That's the truth. Cashman was on record opposing the extension. If you really want to place blame, point oyur finger at the MLBPA, which wouldnl;t allow A-Rod to take a pay cut to go to Boston back in 2004. Otherwise this woudl be the Red Sox problem right now
how many more seasons do you think Jeter has left in his playing career & will anyone be replaced if the yanks dont make the playoffs example: Manager,General Manager?
I think the way he rebounds from the ankle injury this season will tell us a lot but he is signed through next year and I don;t see hinm going anywhere. As for the GM and mgr, i think both get a free pass because of the incredible number of injuries this season
A-Rod is like a little kid, all he wants to do is play! let the guy play
It's OK with me. Of course, I'm not paying him
Scott from Raleigh maybe you should worry about NC state ever being relevant again!
Come on, play nice now
Hello, Just heard Michael Young would waive no trade clause to go to Yankees! I have always liked him! Do you think Yankees get him? Thank you!
Depends on if Hughes and Joba are enough to make it happen I really don;t know who else the Yankees have to offer
Wally, do you see the yankees trading for a corner infielder before the deadline today?
I know they are looking hard for a third baseman but I think they're conmfortable with Overbay for the rest of the season. We'll know in about 90 minutes
Hey Wally, Whats the latest with Granderson. When can we see him back in pinstripes?
could be as soon as this weekend in San Diego, but probably no later than next week in Chicago
Gut feeling about what happens to alex? Thanks.
my original thought was 100-150 games followed by appeal and an abortive comeback this season due to injury. Now, with indications Selig has the knives out for him, I'm not so sure. can;t wait to find out
Good Afternoon, Once again not signing Russell Martin, raul Ibanez, or Eric Chavez proves to be a poor decision by Hal. Thank you!
A lot of people bash athletes for not doing enough to honor the big conracts they receive. A-rod, if guilty of what he is being accused of is doing harm to his health long term and potentially ruining his legacy to live up to the contract(s) he signed. How come nobody every points that out. What are your thoughts?
it's a valid point that illustrates how poorly some teams do hoimework before they sign guys. Clearly, A-Rod was in dout of his own abilities before he signed the original Texas contract, but no one at Texas picked up on it. And let's not forget, that in trying to "live up to these contracts," atheltes are not supposed to break the law.
Thanks, all. Gotta run. enjoy tonight;s game
