Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:58 AM)

Greetings friends. Thank you for joining the AFC South chat. Nice to see you. Thanks for coming. Let's see where you want to take this thing.

Taylor (San Antonio) [via mobile]

My excitement level for the Titans is through the roof! I feel with the new additions on defense and offense, mainly at wide receiver and the guard positions, that we might take the AFCS this year. If not its gonna be a knock out, drag out three team fight! Would you agree or do you feel Indy and Hou have an edge on us still?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Houston and Indianapolis have quarterbacks who've proven they can win. Tennessee doesn't have that yet.

RAY GORDON REID (ORANGE PARK FLORIDA 32073)

QUESTION TO PAUL KURHARSKY AT 12.25 who WINS NFC SOUTH

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

I like Atlanta. A lot.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What NFC Teams that the AFC South Team will Play in 2013?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

The AFC South plays the NFC West this year.

Cjg6710 (Nashville)

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report currently has the Titans going 5-11 tying Jax for worst in the division, i think the titans are more of a 7-9 or 8-8 team, am i just being a blind fan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

They should win more than five games. And they have significantly more talent than Jacksonville.

RR Ford (Indianapolis)

Grif Whalen is having a great camp, but camp superstardom doesn't translate to regular season success.Ant chance he becomes anything more than a No.4 WR ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

If the three guys ahead of him are healthy, he could get some snaps as part of a rotation. But he'd probably rank as fourth.

Sean (Jacksonville, FL)

It looks like the Jags are going to be solid on the outside on the oline with Joeckel and Monroe. How would you rank the interior oline though?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Will Rackley is a major weak spot, and Meester is doing it mostly on smarts at this point.

Trent (Franklin, TN)

Hey Paul, can you talk about Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jaguars' expectations for him this year? Are there any lingering effects from the lis franc injury from last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

They are limiting his workload. He showed no signs of favoring the foot or it impacting him while I was down there. They expect him to be a big contributor and producer on offense.

Sean (Jacksonville, FL)

How much do you think sitting out all of camp and being suspended for 4 games is going to hurt Justin Blackmon? Do you think he'll be able to come back and be viable quickly after suspension?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Will probably take him a bit to get going once come Week 5.

John (Austin)

I feel like depth has been an issue for the Texans for the past few years, how does their depth compare to other teams in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

They probably have the best overall depth. No one can be deep everywhere. They had a ton of backers hurt last year. So it wasn't that they had bad LB depth, it was that they had too many injuries at LB. Same for Titans on OL. If you have to play nine different guys, you can't be good. No one has a quality ninth guy.

Steve (San Antonio)

Given the injuries to K. Holmes and H. Thornton so far, do you think the Colts O-Line will not be as improved as Grigson has hoped? Satele & McGlynn starting scare the crap out of me!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

If those guys can get healthy, they can still be in it. It's already a better line with Cherilus over Justice and Thomas over Reitz.

Lefty (Indy)

Indianpolis released their very preliminary depth chart. It listed Dwayne Allen ahead of Fleener and had a fullback as a starter. Any thoughts on this or is it too early to read into this? Do you expect a lot of two tight end sets anyway?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

It's for first down. Starting lineups are for first-and-10. Their second tight end is way, way better than their fullback. Ultimately that will dictate who's on the field the most. It sure should.

Adam C (Vermont)

What are the odds Michael Preston makes the team for the Titans? He looks to be a great, big target for Locker.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Good player. But seventh at best right now. They haven't kept that many on opening day since 2007.

Lefty (Indy)

Based on what you have heard about Griff Whalen at training camp, who do you think gets more playing time this year: Griff Whalen or T.Y. Hilton? Which do you think is better suited for the offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

Seriously? Hilton had 50 catches for 861 yards and seven TDs. Why wouldn't he play? A lot? And a lot more than a guy who's not played at all yet?

Steve (San Antonio)

Do you think Coby Fleener will turn into a Jimmy Graham type TE this year? Been hearing great things about Fleener in camps so far.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

I think he'll do a lot. But Jimmy Graham's bar is pretty high.

Christopher (Indianapolis)

Have you watched the Titans practices and what have been your overall thoughts about it? Specifically, Jake Locker who many in the media seem to say is a bust already.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

I've been impressed with him lately, showing progress. Needs to translate onto the field tonight.

Justin Dodd [via mobile]

With the talent Tennessee has, imagine how good this team could be with a proven qb like Rodgers or Matt Ryan. I would think at least 12-4 capable. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

You can say that about a lot of teams.

Wesley (Hickory, NC)

If Mariani keeps showing great receiving and return skills during preseason and Jackie Battle continues to impress do the Titans keep reynaud ..I know were deep at WR but having 7 WR and 3 RB isn't much different the 6 Wr and 4 RB.. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

You lost me at "great receiving" skills...

John (Austin)

So how good is Deandre Hopkins? Everything I read says he's been amazing in camp.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

The raves are rolling in. They better throw to him.

TomCrean'sHair (Indy)

Typical roster breakdown for number at each position on final roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Not easily done. It really varies. Are you 3-4 or 4-3? WHo are your best young special teamers? Who's coming off an injury where you maybe need a little extra insurance? Lots of things factor into it and it varies team to team.

Hanson (DC)

Is Houston just one big play type player away from having a SB run. AJ is the only big play threat right now and as good as the Texans are as a grind out a 12 play drive type team can you win in the playoffs without at least the threat of a big play?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

AJ is a huge threat of a big play. If you are saying they need another, see the earlier question about Hopkins. A second big-play threat isn't what will get them to the next level in my eyes.

Tim (Nashville)

PK who do you predict leads the AFCS in tackles, sacks, and ints this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Tackles are not a good, comparative stat. They aren't official and they are determined by each team, not by the league. Sacks, I'll say Watt. Interceptions, how about Johnathan Joseph with an outside shot for Johnathan Cyprien.

Steve (Milwaukee)

What is the biggest obstacle that would keep the Colts out of the playoffs this year? I know comparing teams year-to-year is almost meaningless, but they only play 6 games vs playoff teams this year. The schedule seems manageable and they should be a better team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Regression to the mean. They overachieved last year. May be a better team this season but not have as good a record. Unlikely to win seven games in the fourth quarter again.

Handel (Canton)

How good does Gabbert have to be for the Jags to pass up a QB in the draft and take Clowney? Yes I am assuming a No.1 overall pick which means a 3 win season. Can you pass a QB up with a 3 win team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

If they rate Clowney as better than the best QB and can take him, they will take him. They can find a QB in round two.

E (midtown) [via mobile]

Why do places have turf if it is so rough on players knees and joints

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Grass doesn't grow indoors.

John (Indianapolis)

Paul, do you think that Ryan Grigson has been doing a better job than Bill Polian did? For example, we WAY overpaid on many free agents this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

The contracts are smartly structured. If some of the overpaid guys don't pan out, three years from now they won't be hurting the Colts or their cap.

Mike (PA)

If Locker is an average NFL QB this year, what are the Titans playoff chances?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

39 percent.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Is the sun ever an issue for players? When and why can some players wear shaded facemasks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

You have to have a medical reason approved by the league for a shield. The sun is the same factor for every guy in the game, with most of them not having the exceptions.

Brad (Houston)

Paul - going back to an earlier question - what DO you think the Texans need to get to the next level? To me, the losses to the Patriots were more about the LB injuries (Cushing in particular) and the lack of the pass rush to get to Brady. Give Brady time to stand still and survey, and he wins, almost every time. You have to make him nervous to throw him off his game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

The Texans had no idea how to keep up with or match up with the pace of the Patriots offense. That's a giant issue.

Sean (Jacksonville, FL)

What's the extent of Cyprien's hamstring injury? I know those can tend to linger around all season, does it seem like it could be that type of injury?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

Supposed to be back for second or third preseason game.

John K. (Austin)

If DeAndre Hopkins lives up to the billing, the LBs stay healthy, *and* Kareem Jackson duplicates last year's efforts, do you think the Texans take the SB trophy at season's end, or does more half to fall in to place for them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

More. None of that gives them Manning or Brady or Rodgers under center.

Jamey (Kentucky) [via mobile]

Better chance of being a colt next year DHB or Vontae Davis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

I think they are both likely to return if they both play well.

Tim (Austin)

True or False: The Texans are better this year on both sides of the ball? How would you rank the AFC right now? I would go Denver, Houston, New England, everyone else. I can't see NE losing Welker and Hernandez being a better team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

The Patriots losing talent doesn't make the Texans better at defending their pace, which was a monstrous issue that year. I think it's a mistake to discount Baltimore -- Webb's return is giant and Ozzie Newsome did well to fill a lot of the holes created by departures.

Jon (Indy) [via mobile]

Broncos vs colts. Do colts fans scream louder when manning is introduced or luck.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Manning. Luck is introduced in Indy every game.

Old Fisherman (Petersburg, AK)

I recently read that Wade Phillips compares Earl Mitchell favorably to Jay Ratliff who he also recently coached (in Dallas). Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Ratliff is his standard for comparison for any non-massive nose in a 3-4.

Jeremy (Norfolk)

If the Colts can cut their sacks of Luck in half how goo can he be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

Great.

Hugh Wellington (London)

Can you tell the Jaguars to just stop trying. It's not going to happen.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

That's such a solid line of thinking. Because no bad team has ever gotten good in the history of sports. Remember the Patriots before Belichick? How about the Texans with David Carr as their QB?

Chris (Indy)

First it was the talking heads and now it's some of our fans. How about letting these "over-paid" free agents at least play half a season before making a determination.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

I'm with you.

David (Evansville)

Bill Polian or Ryan Grigson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

After one whole season for Grigson you want that ruling? It's Polian.

Donald (GA)

Paul do you think Kevin Walter will make the Titans roster?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Likely.

Brian (Charlottesville, VA )

Think there's any chance Ace Saunders makes a big impact this year for the Jags? He's being talked about a ton in training camp.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

Looks like a good player to me. Shifty. Confident. I think he will contribute.

George (Illinois)

For the Titans to keep 7 receivers, what position group would they come in light on? I really think they might have too many good receivers to avoid keeping six at least.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

Keeping six is different than keeping seven, obviously. The extra spot doesn't automatically come from a specific other position. Is the seventh receiver better than the Xth backer or the Nth tight end? Even if he is, what do you do with a seventh receiver?

Jeff (Gilbert)

Who you got in the PGA Championship?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

Snedeker. Gonna pick him all the time until he wins.

Hugh Wellington (London)

I meant trying to make London their home. We don't want them.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

They aren't trying to make London their home. They signed up for four games in four years.

Darrel (Rushville (Indiana))

Luck or RG3?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Luck. Going to have a way healthier career.

Jesus CA [via mobile]

With the titans new offensive line and greene coming in to complimetn cj would it really be a surprise if tennessee has one of the best running games in the nfl? If Loggains utilizes locker correctly I feel that this could be a very dangerous team.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

If I am a defensive coordinator, I am thrilled the Titans want to run. In a league where you can die quickly at the hands of a quarterback, I want teams to run.

Hanson (DC)

MJD gone after this season? A RB wanting big money at his age on a rebuilding team doesn't sound like a perfect match.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I'll be surprised if he's back.

bryan(houston) [via mobile]

How much play time do you see Hopkins getting? He's a rookie but probably a starter as well.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

A starter's time.

Nicholas (Poland)

With Delanie Walker out for as long as he has been and Taylor Thompson supposedly improving and developing chemistry with Locker, is there any chance that Thompson will start to eat into Walker's playing time and become the starter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

No. You don't sign a big free agent and let a couple weeks of missed camp change your plans for him.

Hanson (DC)

Roster cuts,do GMs give the coach a list of guys that just can't be cut for cap reasons? Also do they sit together and say if you cut player A you can afford player B ext.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

Coaches and GMs talk on a daily basis. Coaches know the ins and out of the roster, they don't need a list from the GM. There aren't many guys at this stage who are safe because of their salaries. They are safe because they are key players who make key player salaries. And in a traditional coach-GM relationship, it's the GM making the ultimate decision on cuts, not the coach.

Jon (Fort Irwin)

Say Henne plays horrible in the first two preseason games. Any reason to keep him or should they look elsewhere? Hes the back up and isnt getting any better.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:03 PM)

Who's the better option out there or who will be out there?

Adam (Indiana)

What are the odds that Pat Angerer gets cut? I've read that now he is battling a leg injury. I like the solid tackling that he brings, but the injuries are piling up.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:07 PM)

You can't cut him hurt. And he was just No. 1 on their unofficial depth chart, despite not being healthy.
