Chat with Jared Zwerling

Davis (Boston)

Did the Knicks make a offer to Bobby Brown? can he opt out of his china deal next season?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:07 PM)

Did not and unlikely now after the Udrih signing. The Knicks really need another big. Regarding Brown, NBA teams have until Aug. 15 to sign him or he's heading to China to carry out his deal.

Jeremy (NJ)

who 2 do you think start for the knicks? prigioni, shump, metta, bargnani

Jared Zwerling
  (12:10 PM)

Felton, Shumpert, Melo, Bargnani and Chandler or Felton, Shumpert, Metta, Melo and Chandler. This could really come down to the last few days in training camp. I know Woodson loves Melo at the 4, but I don't know if I could see him bringing Bargnani and Stoudemire off the bench together. They both play the power forward spot. Perhaps Stoudemire is used as Chandler's backup a bit. He played center in 2010-11 -- his first season in New York. But they're still in the market for another big to potentially back up Chandler.

Davis (Boston)

is the knicks roster set or will they look for more veterans?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:11 PM)

One more roster spot available. The Knicks should pursue a big. Still lack of depth behind Chandler.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When will the New York Knicks sign their 2013 Draft Pick?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:11 PM)

They already signed him last month. Tim Hardaway Jr.

Richard (Dallas)

Jared what is your take of the Knicks roster now that almost all the spots are full. Does it look good or could they have done better?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:14 PM)

Looking better, but on paper they're probably the fourth or fifth best team in the East. They're still lacking interior depth. Chandler needs more support. The Nets and Pacers, for example, are stronger down low. Plus, they have a well-rounded perimeter.

Bryan (M)

With the Knicks having only one spot open (if C Leslie doesn't get cut) who do you see the Knicks filling with that spot or what position?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:15 PM)

I see a big. As I just mentioned, Chandler needs more support.

Harrison (New Jersey)

How do you see the Knicks going about their rotations? Can you see Woodson having Bargnani and Stat comin off the bench?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:16 PM)

That's a great question, and I just addressed that in this chat. I know Woody really likes Melo at the 4, but he might have to start Bargnani, so he and Stoudemire aren't coming off the bench together. They're both power forwards. Perhaps Woody plays Stoudemire behind Chandler a bit. STAT played a lot of center in his first season in New York, and played well.

Pierr Cuartas (Roselle NJ)

Are the Knicks still going after Ivan Johnson?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:17 PM)

They are still talks ongoing, but I'm not so sure if that happens at this point. The Knicks really need another center. Ivan is more of a power forward. He would be too undersized to play in the middle.

Dwight (Boston)

I'm think Murry is still on our radar for the final spot...but this euro big ( Ovidijus Galdika) intrigues me...how did his workout go?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:17 PM)

I'm not sure, but I doubt he gets an offer. Perhaps a training camp invite.

Haris (Bosnia)

Hi Jared. Is there any possibility of signing Toure Murry?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:19 PM)

Still a possibility. I can tell you, from being in Vegas, that Woody really likes him. But with the signing of Udrih, as I've been saying in this chat, I don't see why the Knicks would not want to add another big. That's a more pressing need. While a training camp invite is on the table for Murry, he'll be buried on the depth chart in New York. He might find another opportunity for more minutes on a less competitive team.

Paulius (Lithuania, Europe)

Chances of Ovidijus Galdikas getting more than a tryout with the Knicks? IMO there's one roster sport left for a bigman

Jared Zwerling
  (12:20 PM)

I'm not really sure at this point. And I agree it should be a big man.

Terrance (Brooklyn)

I really think Toure Murry and Jeremy Tyler are two guys the Knicks should invest in. What do you think the potential is for these two guys?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:22 PM)

Well, Tyler has a chance to prove himself in the first half of the season. With the Knicks needing size, he should get some good minutes. If he can rebound, play D and communicate like he did in Vegas with success in the NBA, he should stick around. After talking to the Knicks, his agents feel really good about his long-term future in New York.

Eugene (Union, NJ)

Do you think Hamed Haddadi fits on this roster? He seems a little too slow for today's NBA.

Jared Zwerling
  (12:22 PM)

Yup, he doesn't run the floor well. I don't think he's an option.

James Sullivan (NY, NY)

Jeremy Tyler averaged over 4 TOs in the D-League. Why was Woodson interested in him over Jerome Jordan?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:23 PM)

More aggressive, confident, better on D and the boards. Jordan plays too laid back like he's on a beach somewhere. He hesitates with his movements and he's a bit tentative with the ball. The Knicks were impressed with Jeremy's relentlessness on the boards, his defensive communication and vocal leadership. While he's only 22, he's been around the game professionally overseas.

Vincent (Bronx, NY)

Chances of Knicks landing Ivan Johnson? Undersized but great upside.

Jared Zwerling
  (12:25 PM)

A source familiar with the talks told me that with Tyler signing with the Knicks, "it narrows the possibility [for Ivan] some for sure."

Dwight (Boston)

Also props to the fine work you've been doing....one of my favorite knicks sources next to woj....mush appreciated

Jared Zwerling
  (12:25 PM)

No problem, thanks for tuning in!

Dwight (Boston)

Any mention of Amundsen? Jefferies? Or Earl Barron for that final spot?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:27 PM)

None are in the picture for an offer at this point. The Knicks I'm hearing could also stay with their 14 players and bring in guys for veteran camp spots. That's definitely a possibility, which is sometimes the case with teams with one roster spot remaining.

Myles (New York)

Which bigs do you think the Knicks are after?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:27 PM)

I'm looking into that more today/tomorrow.

Eugene (Union, NJ)

Jared, is Drew Gooden an option as a backup center? How about Lou Amundson as a backup PF, with STAT backing up Tyson?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:42 PM)

Gooden, no. I think Stoudemire could back up Tyson some. As I mentioned earlier in the chat, STAT played a lot of center in his first season in New York, and was successful. He was obviously healthier then, but in limited minutes next season, he could be effective down low. Amundson does have Knicks interest, according to a source.

john (bklyn)

How about Hilton Armstrong?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:44 PM)

I haven't heard anything on him.

Nick (Q-borough)

You don't think Tyler will get the back up center spot?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:44 PM)

That's not a done deal. Still a young talent with much to prove on the NBA level.

Jordan (NYC)

Why not Earl Barron....I know I keep flogging that topic, but he's an active, athletic big man who can rebound?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:46 PM)

Barron is decent, but I don't know if he's enough of a banger inside the Knicks want. I haven't heard of any interest in keeping him on.

Tom (NY)

Hey Jared, how strongly are the Knicks interested in the Lithuanian big Ovidijus Galdikas? Is it genuine interest or just some sort of publicity stunt by the players agents?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:46 PM)

Not strongly.

Matthew (Ny)

Why don't the Knicks give Hakim Warrick a chance? He played with Carmelo Anthony at Syracuse, and he is an athletic long big who can help out. Never hear anything about him joining the team but I think he would be a great option.

Jared Zwerling
  (12:49 PM)

There are several of those types of 6-8, 6-9 players available -- Warrick, Thomas, Johnson, Amundson. There's interest with that type of position, but I think the Knicks would be better off with an actual backup center who's a bit seasoned on the NBA level.

Josh (NY)

Chances knicks can get Lou Amundson?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:49 PM)

Not sure.

Karl (New Jersey)

Why are the Knicks not interested in Earl Barron?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:51 PM)

It's a good question, but considering who they've been working out lately, they might want a tweener big who's more of a banger down low. I'm looking into Barron further today/tomorrow to see if there are any updates.

Matt (New york)

How do you feel about the knicks signing beno udrih?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:51 PM)

A great steal at his price. Solid signing.

josh (atl)

would the knicks be interested in adding a stretch 4 such as al harrington, or lamar odom? or would they even be interested in adding a michael beasley since he will get waived by the suns?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:52 PM)

I don't think any of those three guys are in the mix. I know Odom's priority is to stay in LA, but I'm not sure what's happening there.

Joe (New York )

Why aren't the Knicks interested in wing defenders like raja bell? I think they have enough bigs since artest and melo can play the 4

Jared Zwerling
  (12:53 PM)

They still could use one more rebounder, inside-oriented player.

Eugene (Union, NJ)

Jared, from what I saw in Summer League, I personally think C.J. Leslie is a little too skinny, and he disappeared at times when he was on the court, but he's definitely got raw athleticism. Do you think he sticks on this team? ANSWER: He's a gunner and sometimes plays within himself. Also, can he defend and rebound for his position? While he ran the wings well and got to the basket off the dribble in Vegas, I didn't see enough versatility from him during summer league. He's a talent though, but raw for NBA standards. His upside could be tremendous.

James Sullivan (NY, NY)

Is there any chance Raymond Felton enters training camp overweight?

Jared Zwerling
  (12:56 PM)

I spoke to him recently. He's going hard with three different trainers and playing pickup runs at UNC. He sounds like he's doing the right thing.

Eugene (Union, NJ)

I know Coach Woody typically doesn't trust rookies. Do you think THJ, Leslie, or Tyler (even though he's not really a rookie) get much burn in his rotation?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:11 PM)

I think Leslie and Hardaway Jr. could get some more minutes with Smith out for maybe a few weeks to start the season.

Jared Zwerling
  (1:11 PM)

Guys, sorry for the delays a bit during the chat. Had to do two interviews in the past hour, one with Tim Hardaway Jr.

Jordan (NYC)

By signing Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih, how much credibility have the knicks recovered after the Bargnani disaster?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:16 PM)

Well, I wouldn't call it a disaster. If he's healthy, the dude can score and he will add some needed versatility to the Knicks' offense. Defense and rebounding are still question marks. Can he fill in those gaps? As for World Peace and Udrih, the Knicks needed a wing defender and someone who could hit the 3, and they needed another seasoned backup point guard. They got both at a financial steal.

Jay (New York, NY)

Any chance of a Lebron-Melo pairing in 2015?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:19 PM)

How about CP3 too? Could be a crazy offseason.

Marquise (NJ)

Are the Knicks deeper than the nets? Whatill the rotation and minute distribution be like with so a deep rostor the Knicks assembled?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:20 PM)

Nets are deeper across. The Knicks should have a wide minutes distribution early on to save guys like Tyson and Amar'e for later in the season.

Tim (AZ)

I really dont see Carmelo staying in NY. Are the Knicks worried in the least about that?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:21 PM)

He's bound to make about $30 million more in New York if he doesn't opt out. I can't see him leaving that on the table.

Marquise (NJ)

Do you think Knicks Bargnani could become a tougher, better defender and rebounder with the help of woodson, Chandler, Kmart, and MWP?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:22 PM)

If Copeland can improve during the season, then Bargnani has a shot. He's got to stay healthy, though. He's missed a ton of games the past two seasons.

Eugene (Union, NJ)

What should we expect from STAT this season? Is 15 & 7 in 25 mpg fair?

Jared Zwerling
  (1:23 PM)

I would say more like 15 to 20 minutes per game (to protect his knees earlier in the season) and 11 and 6.

Jared Zwerling
  (1:25 PM)

Hey guys, I have to run. Hit me on Twitter @JaredZwerling if you have a question or comment. Thanks for your time! And again, sorry for the delays during the chat.
