With Valdespin's lousy attitude and him tearing up the PCL now, do you suppose the Mets could dump him now on another organization and get a stable body in return?
Everyone knows the story with Valdespin. There's no market for a headache with that skill set.
Hi Adam, What you think is the future of Ruben Tejada with the Mets? I was supposed to be Reyes replacement but now is struggling at the plate Thank you!.........
It's interesting that even with Omar Quintanilla coming back to earth, the Mets have shown no indication Tejada will return before September. Ike Davis and Tejada looked like staples for the Mets going forward. Now, it looks like those are two of the biggest needs the Mets will need to address this offseason.
Hey Adam.....What have you been hearing about Brandon Nimmo? It would seem that the Mets must be disappointed with him batting only .258 at Savannah.
I'm sure they are. The strikeout rate is very, very high too. 100 in 287 ABs. I don't want to write him off. He's only 20 and doesn't have the experience that players in warm-weather states had. But clearly his ascent to the majors is going to be a slow process.
Adam, what pieces from this years team do you think will still be on the 25 man roster in 2014?
Clearly the rotation is going to be stable: Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, Dillon Gee and Jeremy Hefner until Noah Syndergaard and/or Rafael Montero are deemed ready. Daniel Murphy at 2B. David Wright at 3B. Eric Young Jr. is under the team's control for three more years (whereas Marlon Byrd is a free agent). Juan Lagares has played himself so far into a long-term role. Then, obviously Bobby Parnell.
Any chance Syndergaard moves to AAA before the year is done?
Wouldn't definitively say no, but doubt it. He's going to be coming up against an innings limit. And given it's Vegas and the PCL, there's no reason to give him that headache if you weren't inclined to do so anyway.
Hey Adam, I was wondering when Noah Syndergaard is set to pitch next? Hoping to catch him in Binghamton when I arrive home from studying abroad.
He's pitching next on Sunday at Harrisburg.
Who are the most likely candidates to be added to the 40-man roster at season's end?
I had no studied it, but we've talked informally on Twitter about it enough that I could say off the top of my head Matt den Dekker, maybe Jeff Walters. Perhaps Steven Matz, even though he's in low-A. If the Mets want to protect Francisco Pena or Juan Centeno, they'd have to add them. Same thing with Cory Vaughn.
Hey Adam, at this point do the Mets still view Lucas Duda as an outfielder? It would be really depressing next spring if he is their starting right fielder.
It's going to be fascinating what happens when he comes back. I still wonder, especially given how poorly the numbers are during his rehab assignment, if they just don't option him down and keep him in AAA for a while like Tejada. If he came back, it's hard to bench Young or Byrd for him, even on a limited basis. If Ike goes into a freefall, I still wonder if Lucas might see some time at first base. Still, Lucas is only playing OF right now on his rehab assignment.
Hey Adam. Isn't this whole "build momentum" line the Mets are throwing around now really only a pitch to keep Citi Field from being a ghost town in August & September? Because if they really want the fan base to be excited about 2014, how they finish in 2013 wont mean anything unless they are going to add a few legitimate bats this winter . Or am I missing something?
I'm with you. I would have gotten the best I could for Scott Hairston last year and Marlon Byrd this year and brought back Lucas Duda to the majors. Yes, it might have cost a win or two this year. And yes, building a winning culture is somewhat important. But fans are happy because of Wheeler and Harvey's success, not because they finish with 76 wins instead of 74. Plus, what did an extra win or two get them last year? It meant the 11th pick (unprotected) instead of 10th pick (protected), which meant they were reluctant to purse a free agent with a draft pick attached.
The rotation's looking crowded lately with Harvey, Wheeler, Meija, Hefner, Gee, and Torres all making starts. Niese is on the DL, and Syndergaard has front of the rotation potential. I'm assuming that Torres will return to the pen eventually. So what's your prediction of the rotation for opening day next year?
Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero won't be considerations out of spring training in all likelihood next year. And Torres is perfectly fine swinging to the bullpen. Plus, there are always injuries. I mean, I know the above names are younger and conceivably less injury-prone. But the Mets thought this year's rotation would have Santana, Niese and Marcum and none is here right now. So you always need more than five starters anyway.
Off topic..... but what ever happened to Reese Havens?
I never heard concretely, but I believe he had back issues again. Just kind of disappeared. I believe he's done with the Mets organization after this year.
What is Jenrry Mejia's role on the Mets next year?
Depends how he keeps doing this year. He should have an option remaining for 2014 if need be, too, assuming he remains at the major league level for the remainder of this season.
There was a story recently about Familia possibly returning this year. Do you think we'll see him in September?
No. Even Terry Collins thought the doctors saying he could pitch again this year was overly optimistic. At most, I bet they just get him a few innings in a minor league game before things are shut down for the year.
You didn't mention Mejia in the 25 man question. What's the organization's expectations for him? Do they think he can be a rotation piece, or is a high leverage reliever more likely?
I don't think they have concrete answers like we want. I think they just see how things play out.
In regards to Lagares, do you see him entering next season as the Mets starting CF?
If his performance remains consistent for the next two months with what he has been doing, yes.
Mets would need to go 18-39 to match your prediction (66 wins). Magic number is 19 to beat your guess 2 years in a row!
I've been 1, 1 and 3 off the past three years.
When will we see Flores*Peullo*Leatheritch?
Flores is on 40 and should be a September call-up. Leathersich does not need to be added to the 40, so I would not swear to seeing him in September. Puello obviously is contingent on everything else going on.
Does it still look like there's no shot of Wally Backman becoming Mgr. in 2014?
I believe Terry Collins will be the manager in 2014.
If they option Duda down, they could prevent him from getting super 2 eligibility, right?
I'd have to read the rules, but I doubt it. He has collected major league service time for all this time on the DL. So three weeks in the minors before he's called up Sept. 1 I don't think would be enough to keep him from Super 2.
Thoughts on Sandy Alderson's future with the Mets? Is it contingent on whether or not ownership follows through on opening up the checkbook this winter?
He's signed for one more year and an option, I believe. My gut -- no inside information -- is that he could step aside after next year if things are clicking on all cylinders.
Is Darnaud coming to citi field for Buck ??
Don't know. Buck may not need the paternity leave. His wife, who is in NY, hasn't given birth yet. And the Mets return to NYC after tonight's game. Buck suggested that as long as his wife is not giving birth during a game, he would just as soon avoid the paternity leave (which is three days).
If both Harvey and Wheeler are limited in September, who takes their spots in the rotation?
The point of the six-man rotation was to not have to shut them down, although Wheeler may miss a week or two at the end anyway. But you have Niese coming back, so you really have 5 starters beyond Harvey and Wheeler anyway.
can you explain john buck's resurgence
Mets say a shorter swing -- not trying to hit homers.
Zach Lutz get a look in September? If not - off of the 40 man?
I think he'll be back in September.
Why don't Aldersen and Co. realize that "momentum" and "winning in the second half" really don't matter? I'm a huge fan and I'm frankly not going to the games to see them win right now, but to watch their young players (Harvey, Wheeler, Mejia, D'Arnaud eventually). The future is not built yet, they have zero young position players in the minors and they couldve gotten a few yesterday.
What bullpen pitchers are likely to be back next season?
Clearly Parnell. Carlos Torres as a reliever. Gonzalez Germen. Scott Rice. Josh Edgin. Not Hawkins, Atchison. Aardsma will be eligible for free agency, but would be a consideration to re-sign, I imagine.
What is the time table like for d'arnaud because as a diehard mets fan I am getting feed up with the inconsistency of the recker and buck with the bat?
Sept. 1. He has just played one game with Binghamton since returning from broken foot.
This is something I've always wondered about. If a team is being blown out, why not forfeit the game at some point along the way, rather than tax the bullpen in what's certain to be a losing cause.
Don't think Bud Selig would like that. Anthony Recker pitching is as close as you'll see to a forfeit.
how much time do reporters spend in the clubhouse?
Used to be more. Now about one hour pregame, plus postgame until all the interviews are done.
Could John Buck clear waivers / be traded later this year? In your opinion, would Mets consider this given (relative) organizational depth at position?
I don't know if the Mets will trade Buck, but he would easily clear waivers. He had a $6 million salary. And there's a third of the season left. So he's still owed $2 million. Doubt someone puts in a claim for that, since the Mets could just dump the contract.
Although it's never been said expressly, the implication seems to be that Frank Francisco is a malingerer. If the Mets have reason to believe this is the case, why don't they force the issue by declaring him in breach of contract and withholding his pay?
There's a union.
Thanks for the chat, Adam. Josh Satin was doing great until Ike returned and essentially displaced him. If Alderson and company are really committed to finishing strong, as they insist, why not go with the hot hand instead of a guy who's proving more and more that he's a bust.
I like Josh, but I think our enthusiasm for him is not fully matched by the organization. He's a useful piece, perhaps, because of his OBP. But probably not a regular. Remember, the Mets last year took him off the 40 and put him through waivers with no one claiming him.
is justin turner back next yr?
Yes. He's even starting at second base today.
Each new collective bargaining agreement between the owners and players union has decreased media access. Used to be 3 1/2 hours until 45 minutes before game time. Then it was 3 1/2 hours until an hour before game time. (Both with the general exception of batting practice). Now, it's only a guaranteed 50 minutes, and not after batting practice.
I'm confused on what their doing with Travis D. He's on the 40 man roster, if he wasn't hurt earlier he would have already been in the majors probably. Why not just send Recker down and Travis up now? He's going to be here in September anyway. Or is that going to waste an option year/arbitration.
D'Arnaud needed Triple-A seasoning out of spring training, but never got it because he broke his foot April 17. So while he definitely would have been up by now had he not broken the foot, his actual amount of Triple-A games over two seasons is small. Last year he suffered a knee injury early on.
How fast can you type in a minute?
Don't know. But with a few typos here and there, as fast as you talk, probably.
Don't know, but I imagine Vegas at some point.
Adam, What is the future of the Mets AAA in Vegas?
Agreements are a minimum of two years, so they're locked in for 2014. Then they can shop around again.
IS THERE ANY CHANCE WE TRADE MATT HARVEY FOR DARIN RUF?
Ike Davis will be playing for the "________" in 2014. I say "Minnesota Twins", solely bc he can join Pelf as Mets first-round busts.
If I were betting, I'd say not the Mets. Wouldn't swear to it, but hunch.
If the Mets continue to play well and finish strong the rest of the season then there is a good chance that they will finish outside of the bottom 10 in the league, which means they will be forced to lose a draft pick if they sign a premier free agent next season. Could create an interesting situation after the whole Bourn saga.
has the decreased clubhouse access hindered your ability to do your job well?
A little. But I ended up spending more time with the scouts at the ballpark, etc., so I pick up information in different ways.
Can you see den Dekker and lagares in the same outfield? If so what are their respective positions? Who's better defensively?
Terry Collins says he can foresee that a little in September. TC said he's seen Lagares in the corners, but only seen den Dekker in center. He hasn't thought it out yet, but it sounded right now like on those days, den Dekker would be the CF.
If Davis departs and Mets strike out in 1B free agent/trade market, your starting 1B in 2014 is...Wilmer Flores?
Or maybe Murph with Cano at 2B. .... Joking.
how do you know who's a scout at ballpark? do they have a badge that says scout?
I've been covering the team for 12 years. It's been a lot of the same guys forever. We stay at the same hotel in spring training, see each other at major and minor league games. It's a mutual relationship. They sometimes ask me about players' personalities, who doesn't get along with teammates. And, since they are covering maybe 5 teams, they also ask for updates on where people are in recovering from injuries (like Niese, etc.).
Which free agents will the Mets target in the offseason?
Now, the priority may be SS and 1B. I had been focusing on outfielders for the longest time. The names that jump out are Shin-Soo Choo and Jacoby Ellsbury there.
Do you have a darkhorse minor leaguer who can rise through the ranks the next year or so like Montero and deGrom just did?
Don't know if he's a darkhorse anymore, but lefty reliever Jack Leathersich is one to watch.
Any Johan Santana update, do you see him pitching again?
He just said he plans to start throwing in about a month and wants to be in the majors next year. Highly doubt it will be with the Mets.
Anyway, game is about to begin. Thanks for joining me for the past 40 minutes.
