Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to the fastest hour in golf! Today I can promise you there will not be an "extra" hour of chatting because starting Thursday we'll have GolfCast starting at 8:30 am going all day. So I'll start by asking you all this: WHY does/doesn't Tiger win this week? BRING IT!!!!!

Chip (Stees)

Prepare to eat crow this week win Tiger wins by 5

Connor (Richmond, VA)

Michael, you seem to always pick Tiger as the pre-tournament favorite. Obviously he's the best right now, but after the dissapointing major attempts this year, are you really going to pick him again? Especially with even more pressure added after winning WGC Bridgestone?thanks, cly

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

I only picked Tiger before the Masters and I'm not picking him to win this major. I did pick him to win last week and how'd that turn out?

Chris (Chicago)

MC you have been rather harsh lately with Tiger, almost Skip Bayless(esque)...how can him playing so well a week ahead of the final major not be a huge boost for him mentally? That is where his problems have been!

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Harsh or truthful? Why is it when I tell the truth, Tiger lovers call me a hater, or if it's something good Tiger haters call me a Tiger lover. I'm a truth sayer. Most people just don't wanna hear it. They only wanna hear what makes them feel better either way.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Good afternoon, MC! Congrats on your expert pick of Tiger winning at Firestone. You wrote, "Getting his eighth win at Firestone will be a breeze." Take a bow.

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Thank you. I'm tipping my cap now.

Mr. Fantastic (Cambridge, MA)

Michael, love your work. Thanks for doing it!! I heard the announcers mentioning Tiger using a harder ball this week. Is he going to try to stick more shots on the greens as opposed to spinning shots back at Oak Hill? Do you think this would be a good strategy?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Thank you sir. I can't see him using that much harder of a golf ball. Less spin would mean less control around the greens and that is exactly what Tiger needs... control. Yes it would help him hit it straighter off the tee but would be harder to stop on the greens.

Justin H (Las Vegas, NV)

Any doubt in your mind if Tiger will pass Jack?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Yeah there's doubt but I still believe he can do it. He HAS to win at least one major next year.

Patrick (Hoboken, NJ)

With Tiger's performance at the 2003 PGA in mind (+12 worst major finish) - What are your thoughts on his new swing, and if it sets up well for Oak Hill this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I don't put ANY thought into his finish in '03. And this swing has the same flaw as every other swing he's had... the snap hook left. If he can control that here he'll finish well this week. If he fights it, could be a long week.

Wally (Portland)

MC,This whole 'Mashed Potatoes' 'Baba Booey' crap has got to stop. I think it is your duty to let the people of this chat know that if someone yells these things (or 'get in the hole' or almost anything else) near you at a golf tournament, it is justification for a groin kick.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

As soon as they make tasers with a silencer, I'm on the course like a sniper!

Tom (L.A.)

Not understanding these Tiger questions so far. He has the same pressure on him for every major, whether it's internal or from the outside. It doesn't lessen. Why would winning the same tournament for the 8th time create some magic mental boost?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Great question Tom. Now enjoy some music while people call you a Tiger hater who doesn't know anything about golf.

Nathan (Springfield, MO)

What's going to be the absolute biggest challenge at Oak Hill coming up?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Staying out of the rough at ALL costs. At Muirfield it was the bunkers, this week the rough is not where you wanna be.

Andrew (WI)

What's more likely to happen at Oak Hill: a loaded leaderboard with known commodities, or a parade of relative unknowns like we had in 2003?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Loaded leaderboard with a sprinkle of unknowns

Joe (Connecticut)

Does Oak Hill seem like the type of setup where players will be struggling to make pars or are there a lot of birdies out there?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

If you hit the fairways you can score. That being said, -4 won here last time

Shosheak (My Couch)

Winning this week did nothing positive or negative for Tiger, except my guess is he feels good about his game & slightly tired. OTOH can't imagine many guys have more confidence than he does right now. Doesn't mean he'll win, just means not a ton of guys better positioned to win.

Alex (Seattle)

Can you give us a summary of what Oak Hill is like?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Greens are not as bad as I thought they'd be but are still on the slower side. Rough and fairways are LUSH

Sal (Philadelphia)

MC - Do you feel better or worse about Tiger's chances after winning this week the way that he did? Why?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Feel the same way I felt the week before Bridgestone. Tiger will not win this week. Unless he finishes Sunday round a shot back and the leader makes a bogey on 18 to force a playoff.

John (Naples)

Not surprised that most of the articles I have read on Tiger's win at Firestone are marginalizing the victory.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

That's not really fair because he's done something this year we should all be praising. Who else wins five times and still has the playoffs left to play. SOmetimes I shake my head because he set the bar for himself so high

g.p. (nd)

Michael, do you think Phil will be up on the leaderboard come Sunday, or will driving woes sink him. Someday at a major we have to have a great tiger/phil showdown, right?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I pray this is the week because then POY is on the line too. Imagine THAT Sunday final group. Unfortunately I don't see it happening.

George (Chicago)

I like Henrik Stenson this week.....playing very well, 2nd at British and the WGC....thoughts? Hits it a mile and putts it well lately

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

And for Henrik right now his head is in a great place on the golf course. Fanny seems to have really done some great mental work with him that is paying off.

g.p. (nd)

Rory going to find his stroke this weekend?

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

Nope

Pete (Spokane)

Will Tiger have to hit a lot of drivers this week? Considering his inconsistency with that club, along with penal rough and slow greens, doesn't seem to add up to a Tiger win.

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Phil will have his Franken-3-wood and if he can hit more than 65% of fairways with it... watch out

Shosheak (My Couch)

Looked at 2003 PGA leaderboard, lot of short, straight hitters up towards the top. Would make me believe that throttling back is a good strategy for longer hitters. And Zach Johnson should be higher up the favorites list

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Good research

Dan (CA)

Michael, there's a really strange narrative in the media now that if Tiger doesn't win majors, all the other wins he racks up are meaningless. If you're a golf fan, or even just a Tiger fan, you should cherish every win he gets, because it's very likely you'll never see someone this good at golf in your lifetime. Just enjoy watching him play...

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

That's a great theory, but two flaws. One Tiger said it's all about the majors and beating Jack's record. And two, if you tell a crazy Tiger fan that he might not win another major or break Jacks record they wanna kidnap your family.

Shosheak (My Couch)

65%?! Has Phil ever hit 65% of his fairways? And no it didn't happen at either of his open wins, even sans driver

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

That's a hint to where I think he'll finish then isn't it.

Joe (Connecticut)

Hypothetical: Phil wins the PGA Championship, but Tiger wins one playoff event and the FedEx Cup. Who is the POY?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Phil UNLESS Tiger's win is the Tour Championship and he also wins the FedEx Cup

Doug (GA)

Two majors trumps all in the POY race...

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

AND Phil got 2nd at the US Open. But SIX wins AND the FedEx Cup. Man that's tough

Wally (Portland)

MC, amateur equipment question - is there much advantage for a 10 handicap using a tour ball, or is there a ball better fit to my game? Everyone just assumes using a Pro-V1 or other tour ball will make you better but I know the pros play a totally different game than I do!

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

I'm a 10 hcp and use a tour golf ball. There's a big advantage to using one because of how greta they perform around the greens (and we miss a bunch of greens)

Tom (L.A.)

I like the fan interaction aspect of voting on the hole location for the PGA, but it would have been better if we could have voted on a tee box instead. Driveable Par 4s, baby!

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Now THAT would have been a great idea.

Kimberly (Detroit, MI)

I sense Woods feels his ball striking and course management have given him a chance to win a major this year but the fickle greens have been his undoing. I really get the sense he feels the greens haven't been maintained up to championship level caliber and he voiced his opinion prior to starting Oak Hill. Any chance they listen and speed em up?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

I'm working on an interview with the course super. Tiger is struggling because he doesn't have the history on these greens he does on so many other PGA Tour courses. I guarantee if they had changed all the greens last year at Firestone he would have not even come close to winning this year.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Are your kids picking the winner this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Nah. They're spending the week at my moms, but my little guy told me to tell Bubba to win for him and my six year old told me to tell Tiger hi.

Joe (Connecticut)

There is no problem with the greens. The "Tiger of old" would adjust and destroy any slight green changes. The "Tiger of new" can't do that..yet.

Shosheak (My Couch)

Bridgestone ratings up 138%. In unrelated news, CBS seen hiring a fleet of mowers, and looking over blueprints to sneak them into oak hill weds night

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

BAAHAHA!!

Ed (Long Island)

What do you do at night in Rochester, NY for fun?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

I hope there's a punchline coming...

John (Chicago) [via mobile]

From the players' perspective, is there less prestige associated with the PGA or is a major simply a major?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

Major is a major. Sure if guys had their choice, this would be at the bottom of the list but... ask a guy if he'd rather have this or the Players Champ, no question which he takes.

Dave (Seattle) [via mobile]

When will the belly putter guys like Ernie and Adam Scott complete the transition away from Belly putters?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

probably not until they absolutely have to.

Kimberly (Detroit, MI)

Not to make excuses but the "tiger of old" was used to fast greens that demanded the best putting from all golfers. These fast one day, slow the next doesn't identify the best golfer....

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Trevino would beg to differ with you. Fast greens are MUCH easier to putt than slower greens. And as a guy who's seen both I'd agree with Trevino wholeheartedly

Evan Almighty (Indy)

I watched TGC rebroadcast of the 2012 PGA at Kiawah, and it was amazed at just how well Rory played in all aspects of the game. Any chance he can somehow "find" it this week at Oak Hill? Or is this just a lost season for him?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Lost season for him and that's a shame because I really like him and want to see him get back to playing like he did at the US Open a couple years back

JT (San Diego)

Wanted to point out that (until Sunday, at least) the current major championship titleholders are ranked 2, 3, 4, and 5 in the OWGR. Obviously, winning the major helps in the rankings (Rory's recent struggles aside), but what a great pedigree these guys have. And of course, the current #1 is a glaring omission on that list. That said, I predict another Micheelesque winner this week.

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

Agreed.

Sean (NJ)

MC - are you a fan of the course conditions changing throughout the tourneys, or do you believe they should be as consistent (exluding weather) as possible?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Excluding weather I wanna see the course get just a little tougher everyday. Not a lot but just a little, so everyday the cream continues to rise

Hayden (Boulder)

What can Sergio do to contend this week? It seems like he hasn't played bad but just needs to avoid the string of bogeys late in rounds that have hurt him lately

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

He's a green hitting machine and if he can hit greens at his normal pace he won't even have to putt great to get in contention. That being said he's gotta be patient and that's a big ask for Sergio. Oh yeah, it's NY and they still haven't forgotten about the "comments"

Michael (Kansas City)

Mc, when are you doing ur top 25?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

They'll be posted Wednesday. Finishing them tonight and tomorrow morning.

Cole (Pittsburgh, Pa)

Coming off of a great performance from both Tiger and Keegan at Firestone, who has a better chance at winning the PGA Considering Keegan has recently won it, does he have the edge?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Definitely would give Keegan the edge at this major

john (orlando)

Michael, what do u think is gonna be the winning score at oak hill?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

-6 wins

Ed (Long Island)

How does the cut line work this week? Over/under on club pros making the cut?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

over/under club pro 1/2.... cut is top 70 and ties

Marrio (Mississippi)

MC, if Tiger is leading after day one of the PGA what is the outcome?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

He will not win unless he's leading by 3 on Saturday night.

Jake (Him)

No one thought tiger would contend at kiawah!! Played well until weekend demons!! Same thing at oak hill possibly just without weekend demons??

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Tiger played well at a bunch of majors... til the weekend. Why is that different this time?

johnson (St Paul)

mc, who has the most golf knowledge between Farell,Bob,You,Rick?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Harig by far.

Jeff (Chicago)

Assuming Tiger doesn't win this week (all those dog legs look like trouble for him) what's his best chance for his next Major? Masters or Pinehurst?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

You would think the Masters. I that would be correct.

RJ (OK)

Pct. chance my man Ernie Els wins the PGA? I'll be happy at anything over 10%.

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Ok then, 11%. Feel better? haha

Tom (Boston)

Stenson wins, then Snedeker 2nd.....Phil 3rd and tiger T 15

bob (Pittsburg)

do u think Oak hill will play like a us open?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

similar but not quite as hard

Tim (Austin)

Keegan "definitely" has the edge??? Tiger Woods- 14 majors; Keegan Bradley- 1 major..... Are you just trolling us now Michael? You don't think Tiger will win, sure. But a gun to your head, you are telling me you would take ANY single golfer to win over Tiger at ANY tournament? You want to take the field, completely understand, but ONE choice of ONE golfer, you are taking Tiger every day of the week and twice on Sunday, and if you are telling us different, you are lying.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

I rest my case on the Tiger thing I spoke of earlier. Who's won the most recent major. Jack won 18 so if he played Augusta next year I'm an idiot for not backing him? And are we talking majors or regular tour events? Cause you just went two places and now I have a gun to my head! I DID pick Tiger last week (call me crazy), and I was right. But because Tiger hasn't won a major in 5 years and I don't think he'll win this one... well I'll be on the roof ledge.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

That was fun (right up until Tim) and I told ya it would be quick. Remember I'll be on everday starting Thursday at 8:30 am EST.Talk to y'all soon!! MC @ESPNCaddie on Twitter and ESPNCaddie@gmail.com is my email.
