Sad news on Tony Stewart breaking his leg in a Sprint car race. We can talk that or whatever else is on your mind. Fire away.
how long do you think tony stewert will be out
Just talked to a medical expert who says 4-8 weeks minimum. Chase over.
According to MRN.com there are exactly 43 cars entered for Sunday and only 39 for Saturday so far. On Saturdays list, there is no 'Dinger and no Danica. Now I thought I had read earlier in the year that Mr. Penske was going to put the Dinger in the NNS car at the road courses and that Turner-Scott was going to field Danica here? Any idea what happened. Also Boris Said is not entered anywhere. Any idea why and if he can be Tony's replacement for this week and then Tony can go find someone long term if he is indeed out for the year - maybe a Nationwide guy or a guy like Almindinger
Wow. A lot there. Danica said last week she likely was done with NW this year unless it's at Talladega. And Penske did put Dinger in a couple of road course events, just not this one. As for Smoke's replacement, no announcement. I'd go with Regan Smith.
Hey Newt, would a top 20 finish for Greg Biffle this weekend be almost like a win considering that this is his worst race track by far?
It would be close for him and Dale Jr., who has an average finish of like 28 the last six or seven at the Glen. This race is about survival for a few.
Hey Dave who are you hearing as rumors besides Rodney childers as Kevin harvick crew chief for 2014?
Not a lot now. I wouldn't rule out Kevin's current crew chief moving over with him.
How happy are you that Tony Stewart was hurt Newt, we all know what your opinion of him is.
Crushed. I hate it for Tony, his fans, the sport. Contrary to what you think, I love Tony's personality and passion. Do we knock heads from time to time? Yes. But if you read my column's from Eldora you'll see I have the utmost respect.
Can't believe it. No Smoke at the Glen? Get well soon Tony. I have a feeling he will surprise a lot of people. Can't keep a good racer down.
Tony is tough, but this will take a while to recovery from. So unfortunate.
Another invisible run for Clint, maybe I should be an 88 fan.
Nobody is more frustrated than Bowyer, but at least he's holding strong in the standings. You can win a title with consistency.
Do you see Danny stockman being Austin dillon crew chief in cup for 2014 or Austin being with Gil Martin and the 29 team?
Can see Dillon's NW crew moving up with him and Martin perhaps moving on with Harvick.
What sponsors are being mentioned in the garage to be dale jr sponsor for 2014
No specifics, but a trucking company has been rumored. Was told again last week it is close.
OK, here's a hypothetical inspired by Stewart's injury. Let's say this injury didn't happen til Stewart crossed the finish line winning the final race before the chase at Richmond. Does Stewart's spot in the Chase go to the #14 car and whatever substitute driver gets placed in the seat? Could a substitute driver end up winning the Chase that way?
Interesting scenario, and I can't say 100 percent, but I would assume at that point only the car is eligible for the owner's championship.
Will I get in the chase "Dad"?
If you win two races over the next five weeks.
How many questions will you answer today that can't get a drivers name right because of trolling?
More than one.
Now that smoke has broken his right do u think he will ever stop sprint car dirt racing?
No. He loves it too much.
Smoke ...was he over driving? Seems to me he was after 2 wrecks back to back
There was a lapped car involved, and I haven't studied it that closely. The focus now should be on getting Stewart healed.
Now that Stewart is likely out for awhile who do you think will take his spot? I was thinking that A.J. and A. Dillion will split time in the ride.
My guess is Regan Smith, but it's just a guess.
Did you enjoy being able to write a told you so article?
No, and I never used those words and I never would. Gave me a sick feeling when I heard the news at 4 am and it still hasn't gone away.
I just want to thank you for your latest article on JPM. It was excelent and you stated the facts accurately and I really appreciated it. Unfortunetly Juan's bad luck continues to plague him. Any news and or rumors about his future ? Thanks again.
Thanks. Nothing new, but I still believe he should be given at least a one-year deal. If he hasn't turned it around by then both parties can go their own way with no hurt feelings.
Any chance Stewart hires Villeneuve to mentor Danica at Watkins Glen? I'd love to be at the team meeting...
Hi Newt, with Rowdy's beating teammate #20 in Top 5's and Top 10's, showing Championship consistency, do you rate the #18 as the most serious threat to challenge 48/5 for the Cup?
Kyle and Matt are two of my favorites to challenge JJ. I'm still not sold on the 5 even though Kahne has two wins and has been fast all season. Still to inconsistent to win it all.
When Steve Park was injured back in the day, Dale SR called his old friend DW to help DEI and I was wondering if Tony might call his old buddy, Cup winnner and Road Course star, Robby Gordon to run the #14 to help SHR?
Robby would be great at the Glen, so not a bad idea. Haven't heard anything yet.
No matter what the haters say, Danica seems to be improving each race. Now with Tony out and Newman a lame duck, will Danica step up and take the leadership role at her team SHR?
Hi who do you think still will win the championship
Hard to pick against JJ, but I will go with Kyle Busch or Matt Kenseth. I picked Kenseth before the year, but my gut keeps coming back to Busch.
As a Kurt Busch fan, great seeing Outlaw getting a A+ rating on Turn 4 comments today. Do you think Kurt is a favorite to win the Glen since #78 tested there and could #14 misfortune be Kurt's gain by helping #78 make the Chase?
Kurt will be a threat, and it has been fun watching him resurrect his career. Smoke's injury definitely helps. Anytime you eliminate a top contender it helps.
Is AJ going to get a ride next year? Would like to see a good redemption story and think he deserves a 2nd chance. Does he have a chance for the FR job if Kurt pulls out or would Ryan Newman get that over him?
Hearing he might land in the 47.
Has Joey Logano put a curse on the drivers that don't like him? First Hamlin? Now Stewart? Should Harvick, Biffle, and Newman be worried?
How do you come up with such things. Funny, but how do you?
Possible replacements for Stewart at WG...I'd personally put a road ringer in there, like Mad Max Papis, but they'll probably put in Regan Smith.
Yeah, Smith is available, he has HMS ties and knows the system.
Any chatter about Bobby Labonte taking over for Smoke at the Glen this weekend?
Just from fans.
Gene Hass may be able to tell smoke when to race, But I think His Sponsor's might start too. How does Smoke like his crow
Stewart runs the show, and I doubt Haas or any sponsor will change what he does.
Is there anything new as far as Newman's status for 2014? I have a feeling he and Borland will reunite with Penske in the 12 with Quicken Loans? Hornish may have to wait again.
I am hearing possibly Newman and Hornish could turn Penske into a four-car team.
I guess one of the big questions on everyone's minds is who is going to drive the 14 this weekend?
Yeah, a lot of speculation. Regan Smith is my front-runner.
the last couple weeks, SHR has really stepped their cars performance up. So do you think Harvick is taking a sigh of relief seeing the 39 run good?
Has to help, but Harvick is focused on trying to win a title for RCR -- and himself. Things change during the offseason, so no need to look too far ahead.
Hey David, I have two questions: (1) Any word on who has bought James Finch's number 51 team? and (2) any word who will be driving the 14 car this weekend and possible weeks to come?
Scott still is the primary from what I'm told and no word on the 14. Just a lot of speculation. A lot to work through and the primary concern at the moment is Stewart's health.
One specialist says it takes 12 weeks with therapy for the bone to completely heal. With that being said, SHR has only said he will be out at the Glen. What are the realistic chances he is back before the chase?
Twelve weeks to resume close to full weight bearing, but a driver I'm told could get back behind the wheel in 4-8 weeks because driving the car isn't weight bearing.
Any word on who drives the 14 next week at the Glen?
AJ Foyt? No, no word.
Bobby Labonte is not scheduled to be at the Glen. Bobby is still a decent road course driver and a former teammate to Stewart. Any chances he could replace Tony at the Glen?
A lot of Bobby Labonte fans out there, but I just don't see it. I may be wrong, but I just don't see it.
Any news on who Harvicks CC will be next year at SHR?
Stewart said he's working on it when he did his interview last weekend. Wouldn't rule out Gil Martin.
Who's it looking like will be in the 14 this week? Tony going to miss more than 1 race? It would be nice to see a young guy like Kyle Larson in there.
I talked to Larson earlier and he said no.
Can we please talk about something other than the dumb chase? Its not like it is a real championship anyways.
So you'd prefer to talk about who would be your 2013 champion, Jimmie Johnson? Cause without the Chase it would be his.
Who do you think will be the replacement for Stewarts car
Al Unser? Still no answer.
Dale Jr. has not been good on Road Courses in the Cup series, but if there was any chance for him to do well it would have to be at the Glen where he won in 1999 in the Nationwide series, and was leading in 2008, before bad pit strategy ruined his day. Can Letarte actually help Jr. at the Glen?
You really should look at his stats there he last six or seven races. I might have a better chance on Sunday.
Do you think this will change Smokes mind about driving in other series ?
No. Stewart has a passion about driving Sprint cars. If anything, he may become more stubborn about it.
Sorry to hear of Tony's unfortunate accident and hope for a speedy recovery. Is Mark Martin a possibility for a replacement driver?
Haven't heard that one. And he still has races left in the 55 this year.
Any idea who will drive for Smoke at Watkins Glen this weekend?
I would throw another famous driver out there but I can't keep this up.
Who are the likely candidates to replace Stewart both for this weekend, and longer term if necessary?
Regan Smith makes the most sense to me short term and long term.
I do understand all the talk about limiting guys racing schedules, but when did the world become so sanitary that a race driver gets criticized for racing? Money, responsibilities, etc. doesn't cut it. They have a talent, they like to use it, race on and hope for the best!
It's been this way for a while. One of the reasons Stewart had issues at JGR was Joe Gibbs didn't want him driving late models.
Newton if you where the owner of a Sprint Cup Team how would you stand with your driver driving alternate series ?
I am with Jeff Gordon on this one. The driver is too much of an asset to take the risk.
Who are the top candidates to fill in for Smoke this weekend?
Regan Smith and then Regan Smith.
Hi David,In your opinion, which driver has the best chance of grabbing a wildcard spot in the Chase over Smoke now? The Blue Duece, Kurt Busch, even Logano?
The first two you mentioned. And don't forget Newman. He has a win those guys don't have.
Who is the test driver at SHR?
Danica Patrick? Kidding.
Do you see Darrell Wallace Jr breaking through and becoming the first African American to win in the truck series this year? What are your thoughts on his ability?
He's been close a few times, at Martinsville in particular. So yes.
I am glad to see the 4 back in nascar next year.
How about the 3?
Big implications on the wild card now that Smoke will miss probably more than just Watkins Glen (hoping for better, but let's be honest). Who do you see stepping up? I'd think that this is going to benefit the folks over at Furniture Row.
Yes, I suspect 4-8 weeks after talking to an expert. Wouldn't surprise me if the rest of the season if it gets to eight. As for who benefits the most, I still believe Ryan Newman does. Stewart will throw all of its resources at getting him in the Chase.
After this incident do you think Tony will stop this type of activity knowing now he has affected everybody who he employs?
No, but personally I hope he at least backs off.
So who will we see in the 14 at the Glen and moving forward? Heard Regan but he should really focus on the NNS title; maybe get a driver who could do some stuff in quality equipment, Dave Blaney comes to mind if TBR would sign off on it
Then who would TBR get? I believe Regan could handle both.
How pissed is Mobil 1/Go Daddy/Bass Pro? I'm sure they knew all along that Tony would be driving Sprint Cars, hell they sponsor them, but missing the Cup races is a big deal and I'm sure it won't be taken lightly with the sponsors.
Haven't talked to any of them, but would imagine their first concern is for Tony, and I also imagine they are disappointed he won't be in the Chase to give them recognition.
I would like to see Robby Gordon get a shot in Smoke's ride this weekend.
We can start a petition.
Glad to see you doing the chats again David. Hope all is well. Wondering if there's any news on Hornish's plans next year? Also, you think Stewart is out for the rest of the year? Personally I think Regan Smith is the replacement. With SHR-Hendrick contention he gives the 14 the best shot to run well while he's out.
Thanks. Miss them. Only thing I heard on Hornish is that he possibly could be part of a move to a four-car team at Penske.
Jeff Gordon has six top-10 finishes in his last seven races, including two second place finishes. Finally showing some consistency and almost won at Sonoma and Pocono. Do you think he'll win in one of the next five races?
Wouldn't surprise me if he did. I thought he had the race won on Sunday when he jumped out front on that last restart. He may have had Kahne not gotten a push from Kurt Busch. Whoever says he doesn't still have it isn't paying attention.
With ESPN saying they did not want to host NASCAR races, will that mean a downsizing for ESPN as far as writers and NASCAR NOW are concerned?
ESPN didn't say it didn't want to host races beyond 2014. It just didn't make financial sense based on what NBC paid from what I hear. I suspect there will be changes in a lot of areas.
"How happy are you that Tony Stewart was hurt Newt, we all know what your opinion of him is." English 101.
Seriously? I hate it for Tony and anyone involved with his team. The guy is one of the best all-time in the sport. I may poke fun of him from time to time, but I respect and like him.

Any more news on the severity of the injury? Fractures? Full breaks? Theisman like?
Check the latest on ESPN.com. It explains it with all the latest we have.
Hey Jeff W...Boris Said is entered in the 32 for the Cup race this weekend...per jayski's...just passing along info David...
Thought so. Thanks.
Where do you think Ryan is going to be next year
Not sure, but Penske rumors heating up again.
Asked this after Leffler's death and will again now with Stewart's injury...will this give pause to guys like Kahne or Stenhouse that go race the sprints like Tony? I've got to believe a shot at the Cup (at least in Kahne's case) is more important than running some little dirt track on a Tuesday night!
It will give pause to their owners, Stewart aside, but not the drivers. Talked to Larson and he said he can't ever imagine not driving them.
isn't there a chance that tony can start the race and then get out after 1 lap and a replacement get in and the team still not lose points for the chase?
Maybe in four weeks or so, but definitely not this week unless something changes.
Hey David. Any chance Tony puts me in the car this weekend?
I'd vote for you.
will they put Scott Riggs in the 14? Doesn't he test for the 14 team?
Didn't think about him, but that seems like a reach.
How do you feel the win will elevate Kahne's perfomance for the rest of the season? He's been fast all season!
It certainly gives him and the team confidence. They just have to avoid all the inconsistencies that have plagued them.
where do you think that where ryan newman will in up next year and beyond since winning the brickyard couple of weeks ago and a Daytona on he's surevy where do you think will he end up in 2014 and beyond......
Still don't know, but again the Penske rumors persist.
Any news for us on where Newman will be next year?
Lot of Newman interest this week. You'd think he won the Brickyard 400 or something. Kidding. Not a lot of great options, but Penske could be one of them.
Anymore on the Tony's condition? Will NASCAR allow Tony to wear a special boot if there are complications?
Lot more involved than a special boot. I don't think they're to that point yet.
Video is up at FoxSports.
We have it as well on ESPN. Have all day.
With Tony out, Ryan Newman now becomes the 2nd wildcard. Is it true Tony suffered a compound fracture as opposed to a simple break?
Well, he does after Stewart misses a race and he finishes at least 23rd by my calculations. He could finish last and not make up any ground on Stewart. As for the break, it was to the tibia and fibula. Higher on the leg than the Louisville basketball player, but similar.
David, I am a Stewart, give me a season NOT to tune out NASCAR for the rest of the year. Trust me .... you have your work cut out for you as I was suppose to go to NHMS.
How did this become my work cut out? And there's still plenty of good racing to go.
Mr. Newton, Jr. is a good road course driver. Problem is someone takes him out or spins him. Not fair to rate him because of someone else's mistake. Your thoughts.
I look at his numbers and they are no good.
Based on pure driving talent - setting aside the fact that some drivers are limited by equipment - give me your top-5 best drivers.
Today: Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch and ... gets tough now...torn between Keselowski and one or two others. Stewart was one of those.
Newt, great stuff again today with the article and turn 4. What can the other tracks that have a hard time selling out learn from Pocono b/c like you said they have done something right.
Thanks. Love Pocono.
Do you see Matt as a threat to win the championship? He has 7 finishes of 19th or worse, seems like he is either really dominate or 20th on back.
I do. The Chase tracks are good for him and Toyota is getting back the speed it sacrificed for durability a few months ago.
Will Dale Jr. win a race before the chase starts?
Won't be this weekend. Michigan is a possibility. He's had good runs at Richmond too. But I'm done predicting he will win because I've been wrong too much.
What are your thoughts on Iowa Speedway and placing a Cup race there?
Love it and wish it would happen. Just don't see it happening for a few years.
Hey David....Just getting on....Glad you are only writing about a foot and not another incident like my friend LefTurn....I hope that Tony smartens up....I dont think NASCAR could handle a tragic incident if the outcome was worse last night...Not saying it would be as huge, but the impact would be large if something happened to Tony.....#respect....but smarten up a little! Put Regan Smith in the 14 this weekend.
Thanks. Glad I'm not writing about more either. Day has been tough enough as it is.
That's it for me. Thanks for all the great questions. Let's hope Stewart comes back sooner rather than later. As usual, if I didn't get to your question ask away on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn.
