Chat with Pat Yasinskas

CC (Atlanta)

Cue all the Bucs and Falcons fans being overly obsessed/distraught over a preseason loss. IT DOESN'T MATTER! Falcons went 1-3 last year and looked really bad in the process and started the regular season 8-0.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Agree completely. Results of preseason games are absolutely meaningless. But at least it gives us something to talk about.

Will (Macon, Georgia)

Is Richard Seymour pretty much out of the equation at this point?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Yes, unless they have an injury at DT.

Tom (GA )

Is there a FA right tackle that you think Atlanta would consider bringing in?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Not right now, but could see them bringing in someone when teams start trimming rosters.

Brent S (Raleigh, NC)

What have you heard/seen about Shulas offense? Will it be similar to Chuds? Hopefully they will not run the read option to much.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Think it will be similar to what they did the last eight games or so of last season. Think there will be less read option.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

My disdain for the Falcons isn't the motivation for this comment, but I don't see what you saw concerning the Falcons pass rush. Massaquoi's sack was unobstructed. Getting a free shot at the QB shouldn't be considered a "flash" of something. The Falcons pass rush still looks like it won't be that good.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Saw him get pressure a couple of times. Not saying he's a superstar by any means, but coaches have high hopes he can be a factor.

CC (Atlanta)

I actually thought Holmes played okay at RT last night. Pass pro was solid which is the harder skill to master.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Agree. Only thing I saw that wasn't good was when they ran Jackson behind him on that third down.

Doug (California)

Obligitory "Turn on auto update!" question

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

I've got it turned on on my end.

kyle (northampton, pa)

why is Tampa's special teams so dreadful? didn't they bring in Wannstadt (sp?) to correct this? a man who has been HC in several spots should be able to help clean this up.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Hey Pat. If Hillis can stay healthy, u think the Bucs could have the best RB tandom in the division?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Not sure they'd be looking to use Hillis in tandem. More like insurance. They want Martin to be a work horse.

CC (Atlanta)

Is a Saints fan seriously poking holes in someone else's defense? That's rich!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

CC, you made me laugh with that one.

Ken (Pineville, NC)

Autoupdate just refresh ur brower (after the 1:00 pm est) start time sometimes you gotta clear the cache as well and it will kick in

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

There you go. Thanks.

David (Raleigh)

Mike Glennon looked pretty decent last night for the Bucs. Will he start at some point this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Didn't think he looked good enough that we'd be getting this question already. Freeman would have to really bomb for Glennon to start this year.

kyle (northampton, pa)

pat, you posted my question, with no answer. Is it legal to shoot players out of the cannon when they fumble a punt? maybe that will stop the trend.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Sorry, technical glitch. I'm sure Wannstedt will have a very interesting film session with his special teams guys tomorrow. They've got time to fix it.

Jack (Des Moines)

You really didn't see problems with the ATL O-line last night? Ryan was able to get the ball out, but he was constantly swamped. S-Jax was getting stuffed in the backfield and had zero holes.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

I was answering a question specifically about Holmes, not the entire line.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

Gotch ya.. So who is the leader on Tampa's depth chart for TE? Stocker or Crabtree?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Stocker needs to get healthy. He's the guy Bucs would like to start, but they like Crabtree too.

Darin (Louisville, Ky)

I didnt think Glennon looked that good... Seems at this point he is fighting for the backup spot.... Ur thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

I agree with you.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

LOL @ CC. It would be nice for some people to really understand why last years defense was so terrible considering EVERYTHING that went on and having a DC that wouldn't make an adjustment to save his life or use his personnel effectively, but why should anyone expect a Falcons fan to know anything about football. Its not like having almost the same personnel on D 2 years ago but in a different system lead to a 13-3 record. You know, its not like returning to that kind of system will be beneficial or anything. SMH

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

Saints and Falcons fans going at it already.

Nathan (Houston)

If the Bucs will play Weber in the 4th Quarter last night, Any chance they let me next week give it try? Result will be similar

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Haha! I don't know anything about you, but the result might actually be better!

Michael Hickory, NC [via mobile]

Pat out of all the NFCS players you have ever covered who had/has the best personality?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Hmmm, lots of good ones. A few that pop to mind very quickly -- Ryan Kalil, Jordan Gross, Thomas Davis, Doug Martin, Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Curtis Lofton.

kyle (northampton, pa)

do you see the Bucs attempting more QB movement? Freeman seems quite mobile & his size would be nightmare to bring down for S

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Don't think that's really what Schiano wants on offense.

AP (Charlotte)

Which is more likely in Carolina? Armanti Edwards finally putting it together with the lights on this year or David Gettis recreating his rookie success?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Shocked I'm saying this, but I'll go with Edwards.

Mike (Charlottesville, Va.)

Worrilow was a beast last night! Since he can play each LB position, do you think he can compete for a starting job?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Think he can be a quality backup and special teams player right off the bat and maybe end up a starter down the road.

mark (the shark)

with all the injurys to def line what the chances of sedric ellis coming back if he could since retiring

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

You going on the assumption that somebody actually might want Ellis?

Carter (Atlanta)

I heard on the radio that some people think that Trufant and Alford didnt do well. I thought they were pretty solid. Thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

I thought Alford looked good.

Doug (California)

Chances that Banks makes the Falcons? Any better with his showing last night?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Still a long shot. But a great story. Could end up on practice squad.

chris (wilmington)

I will be watching Armanti Edwards and Kenjon Barner specifically tonight. Besides rookie DT's, anyone else to keep an eye on?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

The CBs. I think there's some really interesting competition going on there.

Luis (Albuquerque)

Hey Pat, Liked what I saw from Matt Ryan and Co. Want to see the line get more of a push on 3rd and short, but a few more games to get that fixed. My concern is still Mobile QB's. Josh Johnson put on a clinic with his legs, continuing drives, long gainers. Any concern from you?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Yep, the mobile QB thing was what I led my post with last night. They've got to get that fixed because they face several mobile QBs on this year's schedule.

CC (Atlanta)

Rex Ryan had a lot more talent last year in Dallas and flopped. Good luck w/ that! Who dat gonna score another TD on dem Saints!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

Rob Ryan, CC.

Ken (NY)

Assuming the panthers keep 6 WRs and also all assuming that Smith, Lafell, Edwards, Ginn, Hixon have roster spots locked down. Who in your opinion gets the 6th and final spot? Gettis, Adams, or Pilares?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Either Adams or Pilares. Not going to be Gettis.

Sean (Tampa)

I asked you a couple of weeks after the draft if you could see Alford starting instead of Trufant and you you said doubt it. Looking at the preseason game and forward, whats the chance of that happening?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Better than I thought a few weeks ago.

Van (Georgia)

Pat, do you see the Falcons increasing their search for a veteran backup QB given how Dominique Davis still struggled a bit last night?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Think they'll take another long look at DD next week. If he doesn't perform better, then I see them bringing in a veteran once teams start making roster cuts.

Nathan (Houston)

Casillas or Watson to start?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Think Watson has the edge.

Ken (NY)

Did it shock you at all to here that the 5-9 185 lb Steve Smith threw down 6-4 290 lb Greg Hardy?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Not at all.

Anthony (Hickory, NC)

Do you get any sense that the Panther's patience is getting thin for Jonathan Stewart's constant injuries?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Yes, but he's also very talented, so they're hoping he can get healthy.

Doug (California)

Any updates on the Julio Jones and Sean Weatherspoon injuries? I know Jones was minor...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

Think Spoon will be a few weeks, but should be ready for regular season. Think Julio is just minor.

Shedrick (Georgia)

Thought Osi looked good. Can you see him living up to his DPOY prediction he had on NFL Network?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Think that might be overly ambitious. But I think Falcons would be thrilled if he gives them 10 sacks.

Steve (Fort Mill, SC)

Any consideration to trading Clausen and having Armanti stick around as 3rd QB? Would open up another roster spot and you know he can still throw the ball.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

Not sure they'd get anything for Clausen in a trade. Could see them only going with two QBs and releasing Clausen.

Steve (Fort Mill, SC)

Panthers really going to start Garry 'Matador' Williams or Kugbila at RG are they???

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

If Kugbila can get healthy, I think the Panthers would prefer to go with him.

Steve (Fort Mill, SC)

Scott Fowler or Tom Sorensen?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

They're both great. And let's not forget Stan Olson!!!

Anthony (Hickory, NC)

We all know about the strife between the Richardson brothers (sons of Panthers' owner) and how Jerry kicked them to the curb. Now that Jon Richardson has passed, is there a greater chance that Mark Richardson might eventually assume ownership of the Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

I don't think so. I think Mark has moved on to other things and is doing quite well.

Cory (Johnson City TN)

Who do you see at the starting CB's for the Panthers come week 1?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

Right now, Florence and Munnerlyn. But I think they're hoping either Josh Thomas or Josh Norman can step up.

Andy hickory nc [via mobile]

Pat Do u think the Bucs will have sellout s at least the 85 percent? I want them to be on tv locally

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

You talking about one specific game or all of them?

Sasha (London)

whats your opinion on the panthers o-line. will having kalil and gross back and healthy be enough to keep cam upright?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

It's going to help, but still not sold on Byron Bell and Garry Williams.

Andy hickory nc [via mobile]

Any game ?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

My guess is they'll sell out about four or five. Maybe more if they start off well.

Jason (South Carolina)

U think Carolina D can be best in the division?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Might be the best front seven, but still have doubts about secondary.

Doug (California)

What happens to Mike Smith if they don't win a playoff game this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

His job is safe. He's made them consistent winners. Blank realizes he has a good coach.

Cory (Johnson City TN)

Do you think we'll see Cam take a step forward this upcoming season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

I really do. I think they'll use him properly -- scrap the read option for the most part and let him be a QB.

Jonathan Stewart (Spartanburg, SC)

I injured my wrist typing this question

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Ouch!

CC (Atlanta)

Falcons have $7m in cap space. Why not sign OG Brian Waters? Putting him b/ Konz and Holmes would be a huge upgrade. I could see it happening... Blank doesn't usually sit on money like the Glazers do.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Wouldn't rule out another move or two by the Falcons and actually it's closer to $8 million I think.

Ken (Athens)

Was it just me, or did it look like S-Jax was only giving it 50% effort last night, at best?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

Thought he still looked better than Michael Turner.

Nathan (Orange County)

You think Tampa holds on to 4 RB's? Leonard looked good, Hillis has some upside and we just drafted James.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Possibly. But how much those guys can help on special teams will factor into it.

ramon (mexico city)

no saints questions being answered? biased!!!! I know for a fact that you jumped on the falcons bandwagon like three years ago....will you jump on the saints one when we beat Atlanta in week 1? Or will you find an excuse and say that the saints overachieved and the falcons underperformed?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

How about you actually send a Saints question so I can answer it?

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Enough of these softball questions. Which team's rookie class looks the best, has the most potential for the future, and/or will be the most utilized this year? You can give 3 different answers

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

I'll go with Carolina and say the two DTs will have immediate positive impact this year.

weazy (bay city, Mich)

Will Beason ever be healthy enough to offer a significant contribution again? Or is it a flip of the coin now?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Well, he was pretty durable before the two injuries. Maybe he can get back to that.

ramon (mexico city)

yeah sure. i have one...why are my saints front office not looking for an outside verteran option at QB..Seneca Wallace? Luke McCown? I mean, god forbid but if Brees goes down...i see neither of them carrying the complex Peyton offense

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

They went with Chase Daniel as backup the last few years. McCown and Wallace are better than Daniel ever was.

Daniel (Nashville)

How did Hicks look when you were in NOLA for training camp? Do you think he will end up benefiting the most with Coleman out for the year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

Thought Hicks looked very good. Saw him make some nice plays against the run and swatted down a couple of passes. I think he'll start in Coleman's place.

Dan (MN)

Would you Extend Hardy now, or wait and see how the year goes if your were Gettleman?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:41 PM)

I'd wait. Let Hardy show he can have another big year.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

Tell Ramon that there aren't enough good starting QBs in the NFL, much less backups. If any starter went down the team is pretty screwed

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

That's true.

Justin (Colorado)

I just read on the Bucs twitter fed that Coach said they would be keeping on 3 QB's this year. Why is that?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

I saw that too, but am not sure of the context. Find it hard to believe that he would say right now that they're definitely keeping three QBs. Would think that's a decision that would be made later in the preseason.

Andrew (Raleigh)

but what if Hardy gets 50 sacks?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Then he becomes the highest-paid player in history!

Cory (Johnson City TN)

If the Panthers have another slow start, do you see us going with an interim coach for the rest of the season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

If they start really badly, yes. There's no doubt Rivera heads into the season on the hot seat.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do you think Mark Ingram has a breakout season, or will he just have a ho-hum season splitting runs with Thomas?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

I may be in the minority (and CC is probably the majority), but I think Ingram will have a productive season. Maybe not quite a breakout season, but think it will be substantially better than his first two seasons.

Jon (FalconFan) 2 (GA)

Pat it seems that Alford may have an edge on Trufant.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Yep, think it helped that Alford was able to take part in offseason program while Trufant wasn't allowed to.

Jon (FalconFan) 2 (GA)

Any comment on Cliff Mathews working on the D Line?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

Yeah, think he's a guy that could go back and forth between DE and DT.

Joe (Youngstown, ohio)

Could Carolina afford to pay hardy with their salary cap situation

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Yeah, there are ways to make it happen. They're $13 million under this year's cap and I expect Gettleman to carry most of that over toward next year. And they'll release players and do some more restructures after this season.

The Dude (Wilmington)

Is Keuchly the best LB in the NFC South today? I think so.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:50 PM)

Perhaps, but I think Lavonte David is also in the conversation.

Greg (Tampa)

Tynes or Dimke going to handle kickoffs this year or will it fall on our punter?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Think it still will be Koenen.

The Dude (Wilmington)

Any chance Stewart gets released? I mean the guy is constantly on the PUP list. He's become almost more of a liability than asset.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

Don't think they're ready to give up on him because he's so talented. They think he can get healthy.

Michael hickory, nc [via mobile]

What are your thoughts on Brian Banks finally getting a chance to live his dream of playing pro football?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Great story. Hope he makes it or at least sticks around on the practice squad.

JM (Charlotte)

Do you think Cam's interested in signing long-term with Carolina?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

You'd have to ask Cam, but I don't see why not.

Lloyd (Baton Rouge, LA)

In your "what to look for tonight with the Saints" article you mentioned only things on the offense. If the defense is "so bad" why didn't you mention the D in what to look for? Or, like me, do you think the D really isn't as bad as some people (like CC) think it is?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

I guess it was because I felt like I've already written tons about the defense. Couple more questions and we'll wrap this up.

Doug (California)

Pat, you had Falcons fans saying your were biased in 2009 when the Saints were good and Saints fans saying you're biased now. Sounds like you're doing a good job staying un-biased.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Yep, comes with the territory.

Jon (FalconFan) 2 (GA)

I know its preseason Pat, but I was hoping to see a little more from Steven Jackson last night. It looked like the O line wasn't opening holes for him. What's your thought?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Let's wait and see how it goes in the second and third preseason game when they play the starters a little longer.

Jon (FalconFan) 2 (GA)

Thanks for another great chat Pat. Appreciate your time.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:57 PM)

Thanks to all of you. Have a great weekend.
