Question in Turn 4: Who will win the great NW Series title battle? My answer: "They don't have one." Here's why. http://tinyurl.com/lwzkmf8
As of right now, the 14 car is in a chase spot in the owners standings. What are the odds the car gets in without the driver?
Doesn't work that way Andy. The Chase is based on driver points. The 14 and Smoke are out.
I am curious why there has not been any criticism of Austin Dillon racing in Michigan. Austin is leading the points by 3 and he is not a good road racer and yet he is skipping 2 whole practice sessions (I know they have a testing day on Thursday). Correct me if I am wrong, but won't Dillon have to qualify in group number 1 (dirty track) if he does not practice on Friday. In my mind going for a championship should be priority one not a meaningless Cup race.
This is a great point Scott. I'm not sure how he plans to work all this out this weekend, but I think it's a bad idea for him to run all these Cup races. I think it hurts his chances to win the NW title. But it's hard to turn down getting a chance to drive the 14.
Pressing question.... should Brad K. download Candy Crush or not. #twitterbuzz lol
I don't know much about the Candy Crush game, but I believe their are a few ladies who use that name at gentlemen's clubs across the country.
Surprised you don't know about the chase for the owners championship.
Thought you were talking about Tony.
This article on NASCAR's website about the 55 car: http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2013/07/14/another-kind-of-champion-for-number-55-car.html indicates that there is an "Chase" for the owner's championship separate from the driver's Chase. That is what I meant when I asked about the chances of the 14 car.
Yes, there is an owner's title. And no, I don't really care.
Any word on Mark Martin's plans in 2014?
Mark probably will run a few races here and there, but that ship has sailed.
Dillon is not trying to qualify NW at all. He will start last.
Really bad move. And what does that say about their feeling about the NW title?
Owners care about the owner championship, do they not?
Maybe, but I don't.
Does HMS get all four drivers in the Chase?
I guessing Jeff won't get there this time.
Hi Terry, great comments in Turn 4 today!. Do you think the Chase strategy of Kurt Busch, Todd Berrier @FR78racing is the same #29 RCR conservative, run-top-10, points racing that worked for Harvick?
Thanks Laura. I think Kurt would love to win one, but they also think they can make it by posting solid finished and ending up in the top 10.
What is more important, a NW title where you have little chance of winning races or exposure in HMS equipment in Cup when you might be moving to cup the next year?
I agree the NW title is watered down when Cup guys when most of the races, but I'd still rather have the championship than race some events in a ride you want have next year.
Your top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for Michigan?
Kenseth, Earnhardt, Biffle, Johnson and Rowdy. Wild card is Dillon.
what do u think will happen to mark martin next year
Nothing. He'll race a few events and maybe some NW and Truck races.
I was listening to an old MRN broadcast from 1990 on Sirius the other day and learnt that you used to get 5 bonus points for leading a lap. To make things more exciting should they change around the current bonus point system. I'd like to see a bonus point for leading at half way.
You get one bonus point now for leading a lap, but I don't think you should get any. You can lead a lap by staying out under caution when 25 cars ahead of you pit. Why does anyone deserve a bonus for that?
If the season trend continues into the Chase, do you see the 48 winning the cup before homestead?
Not likely. In this system, it's difficult to clinch before the last race.
Terry, I couldn't help but notice that Aaron's only signed on with Vickers for 2 years. I know they support Chase Elliott and like him a lot. Could that be why the short sponsorship so they can transition to Elliott in two years in Nationwide or Cup? Thanks
Way too far down the road to speculate on that. And Chase is going to drive for Hendrick when he gets to Cup, so Aaron's would have to leave MWR. It could happen, but a million things could happen before then.
Terry, you don't have Kahne in your top 5 at Michigan? He had a four second lead before blowing a tire. Come on man!
OK. Put Kasey in and take somebody out.
Terry, Is it safe to say that Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex are road course ringers?
No. A road-course runner is someone who only races those events because it's his specialty and he can do well at it instead of a full-time guy. And there is no such thing these days.
If Junebug doesn't win Sunday do you think he finishes the season winless?
I thought he would win somewhere this year, but now I don't.
If Bayne gets a full time ride with Roush, what do you think about Martin and Bobby Labonte splitting the Wood Bros ride?
Not a bad idea.
Do you blame Gordon's '13 season on bad luck again, just like 2012 or is it time to give it up and admit that he's not the racer he was 12 years ago?
Gordon is still one of the better racers in Cup. But he isn't as good as he was 12 years ago.
What is more important for the 88 team this weekend? Race for a win or points
A win. They are pretty safe on points.
If VW entered NASCAR, what would you prefer Gen Six to be. A Jetta, Passat or the Beetle?
Now that would be cool to see a Beetle out there. The new Love Bug. Not gonna happen.
Shrub learned in the NW race you do not win the race on the first lap first turn and went on to win the Cup race. What will Shrub learn in the truck race to help him in the Cup race?
Nothing. Nada. Zero.
Do you see a winless driver winning the cup this year?
Not likely, but not impossible. Bowyer, Brad K and Junior might do it. However, it's difficult to win the Chase without winning a race or two in the Chase.
Do you think MWR can support 3 race winning teams-Truex, Bowyer and Vickers or does something have to give?
They have three teams now, but the 55 uses more than one driver. So I don't see much of a difference.
When and how did Watkins Glen become one of the most entertaining race weekends on the schedule?
Because road races have become close contests most of the time these days, especially at the end.
If Brad would have wrecked Rowdy to steal the Glen win do you think NASCAR would have penalized #2 for dumping Kyle 2 years in a row?
Nope. Not win those guys are racing for the win. It's every man for himself.
Why so little said about making the dirt sprint cars safer? 7 people dead in 6 months at dirt track races is far far too many. I noticed Roush said he refuses to let drivers run those cars.
Improvement must be made. And I wouldn't let my Cup guys do it is I was a team owner.
Do you think Kyle could have beaten Ambrose if that caution hadn't come out and trapped Ambrose back in the pack. To me it looked like Ambrose in his own zip code in clean air.
I'm not sure, but I would have enjoyed seeing how that turned out.
Terry, do you consider Kahne a real threat to Johnson for the championship? Thanks
I think Kenseth is the biggest threat to JJ, but Kahne could get hot in the playoff and win it, sure. And Kyle could get it done if he avoids his worst enemy - himself.
Interesting that WG had the least number of lead changes for a race this year (5) but because the action was so close it was a very interesting race.
Just shows it isn't just about lead chances if they cars are close and doing some bumping. And Indy had the fewest real lead changes _ only one on-track pass for the lead under green. But that race was a total bore.
Tony Stewart in the love bug.... Picture it....
I'm not sure he could get in a love bug.
If Stewart comes back these injuries and recovery will certainly take something out of him. At 42 years old, do you think he should consider retirement?
Absolutely not. He'll be fine. He's still one of the best drivers out there and he will be when he returns.
Hi Terry! It's great to see you chatting. Are we going to see Matt get another win this year?
I think you can bank on that one Teri.
Hi, Terry! As someone who has liked Dale Jr. his whole career, I find myself almost rooting against him to make the Chase this year. It looks as if he will back his way in, having just enough of a cushion over 11th to make the cut, but during the Chase, he will be a non-factor. It just looks like he's taking up a spot from someone who might be more deserving. Your thoughts?
I'm not against a driver making it on top-10 points if he doesn't win in the regular season. However, I would like to see any driver who wins a race make the Chase if he finishes in the top 20 in points.
Is there anything Dillon could learn in the #14 (pretty much HMS stuff) that he might be able to take back to RCR to help them make gains on the Hendrick engineering?
I seriously doubt it.
More suprised after the Glen that the Dinger got a top ten in the #47 or that Ambrose once in dirty air after the pit stop and adjustment couldnt get back throught the pack and wrecked..
Neither is a surprise to me. Dinger is a strong road racer, and also should get the 47 ride full time next year. And it's hard to get back to the front once you fall back. Marcos got anxious and it cost him. Just a bad break.
1) How much did you enjoy getting a "home game" at the drags last week in Kent? 2) Here's how much the Nationwide Title is worth...The Nationwide Title and $4 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. As long as you have $4.
On Keith, you're bad. It was great to have the NHRA here last week. The weather was sensational on Sunday. Hagan really has turned things around this season with Dickie Venables as his tuner.
Do you think Carl Edwards or Clint Bowyer will leave their current teams after next season.
Would the cars be less aero dependent if they took the splitter off the car? Seems like the lack of air on the splitter when a car is behind others is why there is less passing since the splitter was added.
The way to improve the racing to me is take off the splitters and the spoilers. The cars would be super hard to drive and probably lead to more wrecks, but the cream would rise to the top.
Do you consider Kyle Busch to be having and overall stronger season than Kenseth and other than Kyle who do you think can challenge #48 or the Champoinship?
I'm still picking Matt to win the title. Kasey might have a shot at it, but really, it just depends who gets hot in the last 10 races.
Elliot Sadler hoping to do what Vickers did - wait for a quality ride in the Cup series? Or would he jump at any open seat now?
No, he doesn't want to go to a team that has no chance of winning. But in the end, it's all about who is willing to pay you the most money.
Shrub's greatest win in his nascar career was the indy NW race. Do you see that changing soon?
No Nationwide win is bigger than any Cup win.
I thought Jimmie Johnson was the cream.
Very true. Which would finally prove to people how great a driver he really is.
I thought Indy had only one lead change under green and that was on a restart.
Exactly what I said.
Do you expect Danica to keep Gibson as crew chief until the end of the season and who do you think she'll be looking at for 2014?
She won't be looking for anyone. That is Tony's decision.
Tracks say that they need Cup drivers to draw crowds to Nationwide races. So why doesn't NASCAR just say fine, you won't get a race? Places like South Boston, Hickory, Myrtle Beach Rockingham all have the infrastructure and would be more than happy to take those races.
First of all, I think that's baloney. They aren't drawing big crowds with the Cup drivers in those races. And second, if the NW regulars were winning, they would become stars and people would want to watch them.
Hi Terry!! Will you be at the chase race in Dover this year? If so, I want to collect my paycheck from you in person! Can that be arranged? If Johnson and Kenstch finish the season with the same amount of wins, who's seeded higher in the chase? Would JJ get the higher seeding due to season points? Thanks! Back to work now!
Why isn't there more of an outcry when Keselowski wins a NW race? His batting percentage is almost on par with Kyle's for the year.
Molly, I forgot to tell you. I'm going with Candy Crush as my new maid. And no, I won't be at Dover. Chase seeding is based on wins. They would start tied.
There is an outcry from me when Brad K wins a NW race.
I was thinking of going to Mid-Ohio NW race but when I found out the best cup road racer, Ambrose, was racing I decided to not go.
You need to tell that to NASCAR.
I agree with Brooks from Richmond. Have some joint Truck-NW race weekends at those short tracks. And with respect to the NW regulars not winning, Austin Dillon would probably have more wins without the Cup regulars competing with him. And you have some NW drivers with serious Cup expeirence such as Vickers, Hornish, Regan, Mike Wallace, et al
I'm OK with former Cup regulars racing full-time in Cup when they can't get a quality ride in Cup.
48 winning would prove 48 team is great. Rarely do I see a move by JJ and think that was great driving. He doesn't mess up a great car but he isn't the greatest driver.
He is the best driver in the sport, hands down. It's sad people think he's just an OK driver with great equipment. It just flat ain't true.
Is sure wish a road course was in the Chase. What are the chances of adding one next year or the year after?
Not next year, but hopefully soon Teri. Sonoma would be great in the Chase. I think you need a road race in the playoff to crown a true champ.
I disagree with Mike. I think Jimmie Johnson is the greatest driver of this era. It's hard to argue with 5 Championships.
I knew you were brilliant Teri.
I enjoy these chats and opinions but don't always agree. Best part is Molly Maid. Do come back when in Terry's Kitchen.
Molly doesn't clean windows, so she's out. I'm going to see if Jessica Chastain wants to come clean my house.
If Ricky Stenhouse wins rookie of the year is Danica his date to the banquet?
If she's not, someone will be sleeping on the couch.
Do you believe that Jeff Gordon can rally to make the Chase again this year?
He can, but I don't think he will. Jeff is one of the real class acts I've ever had the pleasure of meetings in sports. It would be nice to see him get that fifth championship. But I don't see it happening.
Better finish this weekend Austin Dillon or any one of the Fords?
The Fords are good at Michigan. Biffle won it in June.
Where will Newman and Kurt be driving next year?
TBD. They don't know yet, so obviously, we don't know.
Why would people think JJ is just an OK driver? He won 5 straight championships. Many other drivers have great equipment as well yet struggle to win one.
I've never seen any athlete in any pro sport be as underappreciated as JJ.
If Jeff is on his way out, what about the other older drivers Stewart, Burton, Kenseth, Bifle, Labonte ?
Jeff isn't on his way out. Labonte is and probably so is Burton.
Who do you see winning the Truck championship? Ty seems like a good choice.
I think the old pro Matt Crafton will be hard to beat.
Have a great afternoon, Terry!
You too, Teri. And that goes for all the chatters today. Thanks for joining in. Very lively debate today, just the way I like it. Everyone have a great week. I'm out. Peace.
