Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

So Juan Pablo Montoya won't be back. Who will replace him? Austin Dillon in for Tony Stewart. You can read my column to see what I think about that. What's on your mind? Let's chat.

Hank (SC)

Didn't you learn anything from last year? Picking Logano, your BFF, to make the chase this year???

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Love antagonizing you guys with that pick. Still wouldn't be surprised. If it weren't for that penalty earlier this year you might be there right with me.

Ken (VA)

How can Kurt show his face after being outqualified at WG by McDowell?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Stuff happens.

Larry (GA)

How much money does ESPN get from sponsors for mentioning the sponsors' driver on air or in print? The story is out on that.

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Who says ESPN or any network gets paid?

Dale E Sr. (rolling over in grave)

Could you please tell RC's grandkids to quit wearin those dorky cowboy hats? They look like idiots

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

To each his own. The good thing about it is Austin in particular doesn't care what people think about the way he looks in the cowboy hat.

Chuck Young (North Augusta, SC)

Why didn't NASCAR reprimand Travis Kvapil for his tirade against Danica Patrick after the Pocono race? His comments were unsportsmanlike and slanderous.

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Everyone knows the sport needs Kvapil.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will Qualify the #3 Advocare Chevrolet at Mid-Ohio while Austin Dillion is in Michigan filling in for Tony Stewart?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Dillon said Max Papis, but his dad said he had somebody else in mind. Haven't heard for sure.

Heather wva [via mobile]

What happen to bad brad k did he go soft ishe worry abouthisimage thats why he didnt wreck kb

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

No. He just picks his moments better.

Marshawva [via mobile]

Hiiamajjfan butwhydoesnt mr hendrick put someother driver who wantstowin in juniorscar

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Because Junior brings him lots of sponsor dollars and attention. Plus he likes him like a son. Plus, there are a lot of other drivers who would trade places with where Junior is in the points.

Rick (Louisiana)

Chad knaus, greatest crew chief ever?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

He is in my mind. Only one close is in the Hall of Fame and he has eight titles.

Ben Klanecky (Minneapolis, MN)

Bummed to hear about Montoya. Do you see him continuing in NASCAR? He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy to go to a lower-tier team, or to start and park for somebody. On the other hand, his results in NASCAR aren't going to land him a top-flight ride. If I had to guess, I'd say he's out of the sport entirely. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

There's really not another team out there with an open seat that is good enough to give Juan a chance to win, so I can't see him staying in the sport either. Maybe he'll go race Grand-Am cars for Ganassi. He's gonna be missed in NASCAR if he goes. His personality is and was good for the sport.

Rosie Jane (Notonblog)

Will Shrub learn something from the truck race to help him do well in the Cup race like he did last weekend with the NW race?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Oh, I detect a note of sarcasm here. So here's one back. He'll sweep the weekend with all the knowledge he gains in the Truck.

Lyle (TX)

Hi Mr. Newton, since NASCAR is all about performance or lack of, as you write abou EGR not re-upping with Montoya, is Dale Junie on the hot seat too, since he's only got 2 wins in 6 years at HMS?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Huge difference. Earnhardt has won 19 career races, the Daytona 500, two Nationwide titles and he's about to make the Chase for the third straight year. If Montoya was sixth in points as Junior is he'd still have a ride.

jesse (iowa)

With Montoya out who do you see in the 42 next season? My first guess was Larson but I think he needs at least one more year in nationwide. I think this would be a perfect fit for Kurt busch

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Torn on this one. If Target would support Busch I'd say that is a no-brainer. But if there is any risk in losing Larson by not putting him in a Cup ride then you may have to take that gamble if you can handle a few years of struggling.

jesse (iowa)

Where do you see Montoya next year? Will he be done in a competitive NASCAR ride or could we see him in the nationwide?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Don't see him dropping to Nationwide. I really don't see him in NASCAR.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will the Next Race that Tony Stewart will be Racing in is the Sprint Unlimited in February of 2014?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Possible, but I believe he'll be back before then.

Andy (Atlanta)

Any Kurt Busch rumors for 2014?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Don't like rumors. Furniture Row was confident he'd return, but the opening at the 42 could throw a wrench in that. All I know is that he's had talks with several teams.

Rossi (House Arrest)

Hey Newt! Hope you have a good chat, we were wondering when Kyle will admit he's not a good driver and just retire, thanks!

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Think he has a press conference called for Las Vegas after he is crowned the champion.

Claudia (Western NY)

If Joey Logano leaves Penske, will his crew chief go with him?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

He's not leaving.

Ross (Havana)

We expect our favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr, to win Michigan this weekend. We also think Kyle will blow up from driving too hard. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

That Jimmie Johnson will beat them both.

Tony (Houston)

Who are your top five this weekend and a darkhorse?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Biffle, Johnson, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Bowyer. Darkhorse -- Jeff Burton.

Thomas (MN)

Great point in your article today, David. As fans we do want the thrilling bumping and banging coming to the line separated by inches finish every week, but realistically we do have to take the winner 6 seconds out front once in a while to appreciate those thrilling finishes. That being said, what's your most memorable finish of a race at Michigan?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks to start with. As for most memorable moment they all kind of run together. Hard to argue against Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning last year. The finish wasn't spectacular, but the celebration was.

David Newton

Ross Cunningham (Havana)

Hey Newt, can Dale Junebug win 5 straight like Toni Stert and show that Junebug is the bestest ever?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Five straight for Stewart? Titles? Johnson won five straight. Tony never won more than one in a row. Get back to me on that one.

Ross Cunningham (Havana)

Newt, why doesn't NASCAR make rules that help Dale Junebug win every race so that the fans will be happy?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

You mean you didn't get the memo?

Bowtie51 (MD)

Any idea why Kurt Busch struggled at Watkins Glenn....and whats the latest on Silly Season...any word on the Newman SHR situation?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Busch was top five to 10 most of the day. It Everybody struggled until Ambrose got shuffled back because of the caution. As for Newman, still up in the air. RCR still looks like his best bet. Penske doesn't plan to expand to three or four cars. And I just don't see him in the 42.

Ross (Cuba)

Do you think Coach will fire Kyle at the end of the year and Kyle will end up with a team like Kurt's?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

You didn't hear? Kyle is buying JGR. Lots of haters out there today.

Rosco (FL)

Joseph Logano is not even having the best year of his career (2010). People are saying that he was brought up to young, blah blah. When are the excuses gonna end? He is a 19th place driver on avg in the Cup standings.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Can't argue with anything you say, other than statistically he is on pace to have a better year than 2010.

Ross (Cuba)

Why did Matt choose to go to JGR? They have massive problems at the moment with equipment and they have the cry baby stable of drivers there. I hope MAtt isn't turning into Hamlin or Kyle.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Because he saw the potential to win a title there. Look at his numbers earlier in the year. Phenomenal. I believe he's one of three drivers with a legit chance to win the title this year.

Rob F (Haboken, NJ)

Hi Newt, if NASCAR is so concerned with better races/competition why not let teams innovate and test more? Would crew chiefs like Ray Evernham been as effective under the current regime's iron fist? The sport thrived on innovation once and they should bring it back.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Testing was cut back to reduce costs and give the smaller teams the opportunity to keep up. Evernham would tell you like he's told me that the tight box would frustrate him. I still believe he'd be successful. Brilliant minds usually are.

Jay (GA)

I say replace New Hampshire Chase date with Watkins Glen or Sonoma. What do you think?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Keep New Hampshire and replace Texas or Charlotte with a road course.

Ryan (Chicago)

Which drivers outside of Hamlin and Stewart, have the best chance at making a run in the Chase? To me, Junior and Kenseth have been among the best when not suffering from unlucky DNFs?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Johnson, Kyle Busch and Kenseth.

Poff (Melbourne, FL)

So what up with D jr? Seemed a little out of sorts after the bad finish last week. Can he turn it around or is this the beginning of another slump? (ya i know road course and bad luck but still...)

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

He seemed pretty upbeat about how Watkins Glen was going until the late wreck. Even after the race he was encouraged by it. I believe he's on the upswing.

Jay (GA)

Do you think it would be good or bad for the Chase if big stars like Gordon, Logano, and Stewart all missed the Chase, and a lesser popular guy like Newman get in instead? I think it'd be good for the sport to see someone like Newman sneak in.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

First, Gordon and Stewart are big stars, not Logano. Having said that, I believe new blood in the Chase is good for the sport.

Bob (Michigan)

Interested in hearing your thoughts on the third seat at Penske and whether or not it will be Sam Hornish or Newman? Also weigh in on the odds of Kurt Busch getting full time gig at RCR since he has shown he can flat drive a race car.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Neither. I'm told Penske will stay at 2 in 2014. But if that were to change Hornish has the inside track.

Ted (Nashville)

Is Johanna Long overrated? The Danica haters think she's so much better but Johanna is never a factor in any of the races unlike Danica. Thoughts?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Never thought of her as over or under rated. What do you think?

Luke (monroe alabama)

will brad regret not wrecking kyle for the win?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

No.

Joseph (Carolinas)

We believe Logano to be the most over rated driver the in the garage. You writers claim he is so good, yet he never is even up there going for the title at Homestead. Why do you keep hyping him up?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

He's still young and he's been a contender for wins this year even though he doesn't have one. The penalties from Texas really derailed that team's momentum. I'm not saying he is a championship contender, but the potential is still there.

John (Oxford)

Do you really think Tony Stewart is going to climb back into the car at Richmond, win the race, and make the Chase with a broken leg?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

No. But until that possibility is ruled out you have to consider it.

Jim (Bayala, AL)

What happens first: Logano makes the Chase or Danica winning a race?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Logano makes Chase.

Jason (SC)

Do you think Penske is hurting his own cause in Nationwide by having Brad steal wins from Hornish?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Roger Penske is pretty smart. If he thought it was hurting his team -- and it's not hurting his pocketbook -- he wouldn't put BK in the car. Pretty sure the sponsors that pay the bills are happy with it.

Eugene (Blacksburg)

Due to its inability to attract younger fans, is NASCAR's future in serious trouble?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I do believe the sport has issues. As for serious trouble, it's been around a long time and will endure this lull. But as I wrote a few weeks ago the sport needs young stars to challenge for wins and titles.

Rich (NYC) [via mobile]

Hey Newt. Any idea who might be taking JPM's spot at EGR? I heard Kyle Larson but I think it's too soon to put him in Cup. Too much pressure too soon. Also, do you think McMurray will get the boot before the season ends? Thanks & be well!

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

McMurray is safe. For how long is the question. If Ganassi can get Target and Busch together that would be the most ideal situation. Then if McMurray struggled next year after having another season in Nationwide he could be a candidate for the 1.

Shane (Chillicothe, Ohio)

Whats the latest on Dale Jr's sponsorship? Why dont Hendrick share the 7 that the 5 has with the 88. Kahne's got Farmers, Pepsi Max, Time warner Cable, Quacker State, Great Clips, Hendrickcars.com..

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

All I can tell you is Hendrick tells me it's close. Close, however, has taken on a whole new meaning this year.

RAY GORDON REID ( JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA 32202)

question TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.15 PM WHO WINS MICHIGAN SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

JJ.

Kevin (Boston MA)

Newt, am I crazy or does road racing produce some of the most exciting racing we see? At too many of the ovals we see the cars get spread out and just start logging laps. I say add more ovals into the regular season and at least one in the chase!

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

You're not crazy. For years we have ben writing it is the new short track racing because it creates bumping and banging that short tracks offer and big tracks don't. I'm all for adding one to the Chase and even another to the regular season. Can you say Montreal?

brandon birdsboro pa [via mobile]

The 4 is back in nascar with happy next year. how many years will it take for the 3 and 6 to be back in cup?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

3 likely back next year with Austin Dillon. Suspect the 6 will come back when Roush expands to four again.

Boston for 15 (Boston)

Although he's still in 2nd overall, why do you think Clint has not been contending for the last few weeks? I wanted to blame Toyota, but with Kyle's win last week, it doesn't look like equipment.

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

As he told me, the cars simply haven't been good enough to contend for wins.

Bill Ellis McMinnville Ore. [via mobile]

with new seats coming open / do u think Kurt B. will leave fur~row?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

I didn't before the 42 came open. I still believe Furniture Row may be the best place for him.

Brandon (SF)

Rumors are swirling around who's going to take over the 42 next year, and there is a laundry list of quality drivers in line for that seat, but I don't think it's as easy as it sounds. Kurt Busch I feel will stay in the 78 because of the alliance with RCR and how well they have performed this year (11th in points compared to 22nd for the 42). I feel like Ryan Newman will go to RCR and drive the 29 b/c he will bring Quicken Loans and Outback with him since Budweiser is following Harvick to SHR. I don't see Allmendinger going to the 42 b/c of his ties with Penske, and there is always the possibility of the ageless wonder Mark Martin splitting the schedule with Kyle Larson for some tag team action as he's done the past two years, but its's a bad idea b/c Larson isn't ready for the big leagues just yet, soon but not for a few more years. So does Ganassi think outside the box on this one, bring someone up from NWS or CWTS, or does he pick from the pool of Cup drivers looking for a quality ride? What are you thinking Newton and do at all see a dark horse looming off in the distance that could snag the ride instead?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

I agree with much of what you say except for Allmendinger. I see him possibly in the 47. As for the 42, to me it's Busch or Larson.

Jk (Birmingham,al)

Dave who are the names being mentioned to be Kevin harvick crew chief in 2014?Is Gil Martin really a possibility?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I suspect if Gil wants to remain with Kevin RC will let him go.

Jk (Birmingham,al)

Do you see dale jr with just 1 full time sponsor for next year or you see a new sponsor still with national guard?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

The Guard will be back.

Jk (Birmingham,al)

Why would Steve letarte and dale jr agree to letting Dave elenz engineer on 88 team last year go to the 48 team?same thing happened with jr when he had darian grubb

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

The 48 and 88 work under one roof and both cars get the benefit of engineers and crewmen from both, so not as big of a deal as you say.

Jacob (Ohio)

I love the chase, but there definitely needs to be changes. However, I'm not sure changing the tracks or more night races will help. I think the only way to help the ratings is by changing the entire seasons schedule. Shorten it or whatever. Because now they are competing against the NFL. And if NASCAR were to make more night races, they would be competing against the Primetime College Football game. I would say have races through the week, but there is no way that would happen.

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Agreed, shortening the season is where is needs to begin. Adding midweek races could help promote that. NASCAR needs to think big picture and not be afraid to take a big risk.

Jacob (Ohio)

What do you think about giving the points leader heading into the chase a bonus point for every 10 points up over the second place driver. Seems a shame that the most dominant regular season in recent memory is going to go down the tubes. JJ will be tied with Kenseth, who is 149 points behind him. I understand wanting to make wins more important, but at this point I'm upset when JJ finishes 2nd because he doesn't get a thing for it besides more points that will vanish.

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

I've said for years the regular-season champion deserves some sort of point reward to make the regular season mean something. Your idea is interesting. I've argued simply give the regular-season champion 50 points, or something like that.

Michael (Dallas)

How would you rate Montoya's career in NASCAR? And any guess to what he'll do next season?

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

I'd give him a C-plus. The one season he made the Chase he was in the top four with four races to go. Many of the changes with crew chiefs he's had when he was more successful he told me was not of his asking. I still believe in the right situation he can win.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

Hey David, hope all is well. Hard to believe last semester of grad school on the docket next week. Anyways a few questions for you:1)If Penske is never going to bring Hornish up into the Cup Series again, what's the point of keeping him in NNS when they have Blaney who they have signed to a development deal?2)Any word on what Jimmy Johns and Rheem will do w/their sponsorship dollars?3)Any chance of a new CC on Stenhouse in '14 or even later on this year? Thanks as always for doing the chats.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Penske is pretty dedicated to Hornish. No word on JimmyJohns and Rheem, but wouldn't rule them out for the open races on Harvick's car at SHR. Not hearing anything on Stenhouse getting a new crew chief, and I don't really see that changing this year. Thanks

Scott (Charlotte)

I am baffled by the free pass Austin Dillon is getting for letting his Nationwide team down in Mid Ohio. That team is leading in points and Austin is putting his part time job ahead of his full time job. Also, if I were E. Sadler I would be livid after Childress told him to concentrate on the Nationwide Championship and not accept Cup rides last year.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

First, Dillon isn't a great road course driver and starting from the back won't be a huge issue if they play the right pit strategy game. As for Childress and Sadler, blood is thicker than ... well, you know. As Dillon told me, it was his grandpa's hope that another team would want him to drive because that would legitimize him as a driver and not just the driver of the man who owns the team.

Kyle (Texas)

If Newman goes to the #42, whats the odds of Montoya to RCR?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

None.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Prediction on the 56 making the chase?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

I believe he will ... as a wild card.

Savraj (UK)

Hi David. As someone who appreciates Montoya's talent and what he has achieved throughout his career, it was sad to hear JPM won't be back in the 42 car. However, surely the problem was always that Ganassi has badly struggled in Cup? Replacing JPM won't fix poor cars.

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Actually, the cars have been good this year. Juan will tell you that. I was hoping Juan would get another year to prove himself, but Ganassi felt he couldn't wait with Larson and other free agents out there.

Larry (Loopa)

Are you hearing the reason Ganassi didn't re-up with Montoya is because Target is pulling out of NASCAR, like RedBull, UPS and many others?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Nope. Told Target will be back.

Justin (Knoxville, TN)

Is it a forgone conclusion that Allmendinger will be in the 47 car next year or is there a chance he can secure a better ride?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

That is what I'm hearing.

Scott (Charlotte)

David, NASCAR just signed a huge television contract. NBC wants to counter program against the NFL. Cutting the schedule is not possible. Quit bringing it up

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

I'm not the only one that thinks cutting the schedule is the best way to start the fix. I also know with the TV contracts the networks have paid for a certain amount of races and cutting won't happen.

Scott (Charlotte)

If Austin Dillon were with any other team, would he be allowed to skip practice and qualifing while he is racing for a Nationwide Champoinship?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Quite possibly. I'm sure JR Motorsports would let Regan Smith drive the 14.

Kevin (LA)

Any update on Labonte for 2014?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Not looking good for JTG Daugherty.

Hugh (Jass)

No question just wanted to say how much of a fan of yours I am.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Thanks. Love doing these chats.

Ryan D. (Winston-Salem, NC)

If the late race caution never happened, and Montoya won the race at Richmond this spring, do you think he would still be out of the 42 at season's end? Imagine he didn't run out of fuel at Sonoma on the final lap, and finished 2nd. He would be on the verge of a wild card chase berth right now.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

No, because he would be a Chase contender and Ganassi wouldn't make the announcement as long as Juan had a chance to make the Chase. But if he had a win and still was 22nd in points it would have happened.

Chris (Rutgers Grease Trucks, NJ)

Hi Newt! I'm confused. Are you picking JJ or Biffle on Sun?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

JJ. But Biffle is really good at Michigan, winning there in June.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

That's it for me. As usual, the pleasure was mine. Keep asking and if I don't get to your questions just send them to me on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn. Have a great weekend.
