Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. Pretty nice weekend of fights to liven up the summer. Excellent FNF card tonight outside at the baseball stadium in Chicago with Fonfara-Campillo and HBO tripleheader action on Saturday with Geale-Barker, Romero-Martinez and Cleverly-Kovalev. So plenty to discuss plus a monster fall coming. So check out all the stories, news articles, blogs and the updated sked and let's get to it.

James (Colorado)

Hey Dan, Alvarado/Provodnikov tickets go on sale today, are you planning on attending the event?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Yes sir, that is the plan. A lot to deal with before that. Tomorrow I will be in AC for the HBO card, then in a few weeks Mayweather-Alvarez and then a gargantuan schedule in October and November. I may not be home much.

Habib (Arizona)

Do you think Froch would have any chance against Ward if the fight took place in England? I think not. Ward is too fast and skilled for the flat footed plodfind Froch.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

They could fight in Carl's driveway and I still think Ward's style beats him every time. Carl is a top fighter but that's a bad matchup for him.

Brian Steven Ross (Riverside, CA)

Hello Dan, what are your thoughts on Stiverne's comments on Vitali Klitschko pulling out of the fight? Do you think the WBC shows favoritism towards certain fighters and should Vitali be stripped of the title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

The wretched WBC always shows favoritism. It is one of the things that disgusts me so much. They are not consistent. How does Ward get stripped for being injured and not facing a mandatory but Klitschko isn't? Same with Tim Bradley and tons of others. What they should have done is make an interim title for Stiverne to fight for. I hate interim titles BUT in THIS SPECIFIC case it is when they should be used -- when there is an injury that will keep the titleholder out. So an interim title is legitimate in this case. But they wont even do that. The wretched WBC will create interim titles for the hell of it when they are not necessary but in this case they are screwing Stiverne, who has already won TWO eliminators. Just remember one thing: #wbcisdisgusting

Cam (Calgary)

I am getting super pumped for the fall big fight schedule. Mayweather - Alvarez, Garcia - Matthyse, Klitchko - Povetkin, Bradley - Marquez, Pacman - Rios, Alvarado - Provodnikov, the list just keeps going. Dan when was the last time you saw such an awesome end of the year sched approaching? Hopefully none of the big fights fall off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

There have been plenty of years with monster fall skeds.

Bill (NYC)

Dan, any sense of how FNF tix sales are tonight? I always thought of Chicago as a great fight town, but never see much there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I think they expect a crowd of maybe 10K, which would be great.

Mike (Chicago)

Followup question Dan, do you think Vitali Klitschko will ever fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I do think he will fight again.

Ron (Sacramento )

What do you think of the recent criticism Andre ward been getting on twitter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I think about as much of it as the criticism I get on Twitter: Nothing. That's life when you are a public figure.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - After seeing JCC Jr. getting stitched up, do you think he cut himself on the cereal box during his midnight munchies session?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Defintely a possibility. The fight has been rescheduled for Sept. 28 in Carson, Calif., meeaning a split-site show for HBO from there and Montreal. The Martirosyan-Andrade fight will go on Nov. 9 as part of a tripleheader with Donaire and Mikey Garcia fights.

Anthony (Chicago)

So let me get this straight, Stiverne wants to be a "paper champion"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

No, he wants his rightful, earned shot at a title and should not have to wait because Klitschko is injured. He should be allowed to fight for an interim belt and then when Klitschko comes back they fight. Pretty simple.

Jacob (Kansas City)

If Wilder defeats the winner of Arreola/Mitchell, do you see Wladimir coming to New York to fight him in the fall of 2014?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I dont know when, but I can see Klitschko coming to America to face Wilder if Wilder keeps winning.

SP (NC)

Don't you think that the standard statement fighters make about GGG not yet being "tested" is a bit absurd? He has had fighters in there who were supposed to test him, and he decimated them. Maybe there isn't anyone out there available to fight who can take him into deep waters.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Yes, I think that's crapola line of discussion.

Brandon (San Diego)

DTM, with Showtime's budget pretty much maxed out for the remainder of the year, do you think at some point HBO and GBP will work together again? GBP's roster is too big and talented and Showtime's budget isn't as big as HBO. Adversely, HBO would be wise to reconsider. HBO is falling and fast!

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

You are making an assumption that Showtime is tapped out. I think they probably are but I don't KNOW that they are. That said HBO and GB are not working together this year for sure. That said I think at some point it is inevitable that they will work together again. GB has a huge stable and needs the dates and HBO cannot call itself the top boxing network if it wont put on fighters from the best stable in the sport.

Math (Chicago)

what do you think will win the bout szpilka vs mollo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I expect Szpillka to win again in another fun fight. First fight was freaking epic. ESPN plans to show that first fight tonight on tape.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, if Chavez had to postpone the fight due to his gut...err...cut. Is it going to be ready in three weeks? That seems mighty quick and he seems to be disinterested.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

It is what it is. He can use the 3 weeks to make weight.

Habib (Arizona)

Follow Up Question Dan. Who do you want to see Ward fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I'd be happy to see him fight Edwin Rodriguez, although that looks unlikely at this point.

David (Chicago)

What are somethings you look for when scoring a round?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Who gets hit and who does the hitting.

Mike (DC)

Do you think ggg-Stevens gets done at the end of the day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, I do.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Will Showtime be starting All Access for Mayweather/Canelo soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, it begins Aug. 24. Four parts.

Mike (King Under The Lonely Mountain)

Schaefer almost getting Maidana/Broner done. #Hardwork/Dedication

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I believe he will get it done. It's a process. Patience.

Mike (FNF)

Are you gonna be in Chicago for FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

No, I will be in AC for tomorrow's card.

kk (gr)

When is Quillen fighting next? And who?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Quillin's next fight could be Oct. 26 on the BHop undercard. If not then I would imagine it would wind up on the Nov. 9 PPV that Golden Boy is planning, although he has no opponent yet.

jt$ (DC)

Is Cleverly-Kovalev on hbo live in the afternoon or only on tape delay later?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Only tape delayed on HBO that night. Will be a few hours after the fight.

Mike (King Under The Lonely Mountain)

Do you think it's a little early for Stevens to fight GGG?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Too early? Not at all. Why? Stevens been a pro for years, has close to 30 fights, has a world title opportunity for career money on HBO in his hometown. That is just silliness. And Stevens doesn't think it's too early either.

Chris (Atlanta)

Obviously both Shane Mosley and Marco antonio Barrera are both hall of fame fighters, but how much do you think the two losses to Junior Jones and Vernon Forrest affect their respective legacies?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Not one iota.

BJ F (New Haven)

Hey Dan, excited about the Light Heavy fight this Saturday, I think it's a toss up, who you got Cleverly or Kovalev?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I'm going with Kovalev.

Roberto (Charlotte, NC)

In your opinion, do you think Paul Williams had a Hall of Fame career?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I was a big Williams fan but in no way, shape or form is he a Hall of Famer.

Aiden (Melbourne, Australia )

Just read an article on John Ruiz and he sounded like a pretty cool guy who got a lot of heat due to Norman stone. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Ruiz was always a nice guy. I give him a lot of respect because even though many of us killed him for his style he was always good with the reporters. Personally, when I crushed him over his style it was never about him as a person. I always kept it to boxing and I think he understood that. As a person, he was a cool guy. Had a well-earned nickname of the Quiet Man. Didn't say a whole lot but could be funny as hell sometimes. Stoney was brutal sometimes and got a lot of heat that rubbed off on John.

Mike (DC)

Is Liahovich really protesting getting absolutely drilled by Wilder?! That's insane!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Yes it is. I wrote a blog about it that should be up soon.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Here's my preview of Geale-Barker: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9572962/us-stardom

Peter (Ithaca)

Any chance GGG and Kovalev could meet at a catchweight of say 170 someday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Maybe someday. Both have other things to deal with before that.

Stiffy (Wisconsin)

Dan, is Mosley-Mundine happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Not 100% done yet but it looks like it is on track to happen in Australia in October.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Not 100% done yet but it looks like it is on track to happen in Australia in October.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Here's my Cleverly-Kovalev preview: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9570223/cleverly-predicts-ko-hard-punching-kovalev

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Thomas Dulorme is also back on Saturday on the HBO undercard. His fight will air on HBO Latino. Here's my story on him: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/5066/dulorme-keeps-going-despite-setback

kk (gr)

Is Stoney training any big name guys, haven't seen him around. Dude used to crack me up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

As far as I know he is out of boxing.

Anthony (Chicago)

Any idea Ruiz's biggest payday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I believe the Roy Jones fight but Ruiz wound up making good money for a number of fights -- three title fights with Holyfield, Jones, Rahman,Haye, etc...

Joe (Syracuse)

Is there any good fighters on the first mike Tyson card? I live in the area of the fight and am thinking of going?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

It's definitely a good card. Not any big names but some good prospects and two very solid fights for belts in the two main TV fights.

Roger (OH)

Technically Liakhovich only has one loss. The other 5 were all the result of illegal punches. Even when he quit in his corner against Jennings.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Well said.

Mike (Dc)

With jcc jr moving to 9/28 does that mean no chance HBO picks up Haye-Fury?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Highly unlikely. That fight was never in their plans, as far as I know.

David (PWAY NJ)

Duane Ford thinks Liahovich has a valid point

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Shaun (St. Louis)

Dan - Any update on who will be doing the commentary for all access?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

No, I asked Espinoza yesterday who would narrate and he said TBA.

Steve (DC)

Is Roy Jones-Steve Collins really gonna happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I doubt it. Never believed it would even when Collins was talking about it.

Dan (New York)

Is there any chance the Geale-Barker winner fights GGG in November?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I'd say virtually zero chance the fight would happen in November. After that? Sure.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I love the proposed Broner-Maidana fight. I will definitely purchase the PPV, I understand the economics of why it might end up on PPV. BUT, I think it FLOPS as a PPV, I can't see it doing more than 150K. Am I wrong?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

What people dont get about PPV is that the buy numbner means nothing. What means something is how much does it cost to put on the event. If the fight did 150,000 buys (and I think it would do more) and the revenue was more than it cost to do the event it is a success.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Fresh from the Bat Phone: Tickets for Alvarado-Provodnikov went on sale a little while ago sold 1,200 tickets in the first 25 minutes. Gate is already about $100,000. They are going to have an awesome crowd there.

Julian (Dallas/TX)

All signs point to Danny Jacobs facing Peter Quillin next what do you think of that and what do you think that says about the GB's stable of fighters in the 160 pound division?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

That is definitely a possible fight but Jacobs has a fight on Monday night on the new FS1 series first. Even if he wins it, I doubt Jacobs will be back in October to fight Quillin. I think at least one more fight.

Ron (Arizona)

Dan what did you think about DeMarco's performance on saturday? could he be a world champion once again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

He looked solid against a veteran guy. He was at 140, not 135. DeMarco is a tough guy and you never know what happens if he gets a shot but I dont view him as a top-notch 140 contender.

al (denver)

i bought 7 of those tickets!

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Nice.

Gregory D (Raleigh,NC)

Hey Dan, do you think Zab Judah is a first ballot hall of famer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

LOL.

Mike (PA)

Better all time Roy Jones Jr or Bernard Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

It's a tough debate. I think in terms of overall accomplishment they are very even. I might have to give Roy the slight edge because in his prime he was the best freaking fighter I ever saw hands down. He did stuff that made no sense. His speed was ridiculous. His power was sick. And although he fought a lot of turds, he also beat several top quality opponents, including Hopkins. Roy was p4p No. 1 for literally like a decade. All respect to BHop and what he has done but I had to put one over the other I'd have to give Roy a slight edge.

Mikey (NY)

DTM, Who is on the short list of oppenets to fight Donaire on 11/9?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

The one fighter Top Rank is talking about is Darchinyan but there are weight issues so it could change.

Brian (Toronto)

How does " buy number " for a PPV mean nothing ? Doesn't this directly impact on the revenue of the fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Yeah but if it does a buy rate of 1 million but the show costs more than the revenue you lose money. I'd rather do a show that sells 150k buys and the revenue is more than it cost to do the show because then I make money, not lose money.

Scott (Raleigh)

Dan, thanks for the volume of work of late. Not to be a conspiracy theorist....but do you think that maybe the Klitschko "injury" happened to avoid the ridiculous $23MM purse bid? Maybe it never happens and the dude keeps his money?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

You are clearly drinking the Sprite today. The $23 million purse bid is for Wladimir's fight not Vitali's and Vitali is the one who is injured.

John Ruiz (New Haven)

I just want you to know that despite everything you say about me I still love you.

Rick (Philly)

Have you decided if you're going to Macau for the Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I'm probably going.

Mario (Houston, TX)

29 days, 8 hrs, 22 mins till The One , but whos counting?

Big Dude (DC)

In light of Scott's comment, I'd like to say that I very much enjoyed Wladimir's beatdown of Adamek a few years ago.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley! He was just Klitfused.

Brian (Toronto)

I take the other side in the debate (Jones/Hopkins). Hopkins' late career resurgence has been more impressive. Jones has been done for nearly a decade now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

This is true but Roy's bad fade does not overshadow his absolute sustained brilliance when he was untouchable.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

In case you weren't sure about Roy Jones watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyqDA4-JUJU

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

A lot of folks asking about the Klitschko/Stiverne situation. Here is the story I did a few days ago that explains everything: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/9567072/vitali-klitschko-remainder-year-due-hand-injury

DT (Houston)

Dan, I seem to think Judah is a first ballot HOFer. I'm curious to know why you don't feel that he is.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

First ballot? I'm not sure he makes it on any ballot.

Steve (Kansas)

Got my Alvardo-Provodnikov tickets! A group of us are flying in for my bachelor Party, should be a great weekend!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Awesome. Hope you have a great time.

Roy Jones (FLA)

Brian(Toronto)... YALLLL MUST OF FORGOTTTTTTT

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, will guys like Mosley and Morales have difficulty getting into the HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Doubtful.

Mike (Dc)

Think Shekie Baby needs to put Suliman and the WBC in the camel clutch? Break his back, make him humble!

Scott (Detroit)

Zab Judah never won a single signature fight. Every time he stepped up to face the very best level of competition, he lost (and often KO'd). To suggest he is 1st ballot is a joke.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

His biggest win was going to St. Louis and stopping Spinks for the undisputed welterweight title to even them up 1-1.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

yea all the Alvarado-Provdnikov ticket talk, I picked up my tickets to the Collazo fight yesterday. now what!? lol

Mike (Chicago)

Dan, any updates on Chris John, and whether he plans to fight again this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Not a clue.

Bk don (Brooklyn)

Any idea about ticket sales for tomorrow night's AC card? It seems to have very little buzz with even the fight freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

There is not a lot of buzz since they are not that well known, it's the dead of summer and there are so many bigger fights coming. That said, I hope there's a good crowd because it's a good card.

Mike (DC)

Do you think Vitali actually has an injured hand or are they just stalling?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I believe he has a legitimate injury.

Brinsley (St Albans, UK)

Hey Dan, are you covering the Barker fight? I can't wait, my girlfriend bought us tickets and its my first live fight in the U.S! Do you know if Cleverly will be on the big screen before the main event?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I doubt Cleverly fight will be on the big screen because it will have been over for a few hours and they have a full undercard in AC that will be going on.

Kevin (Victoria)

Official picks for this weekend Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I like Geale on points over Barker, Romero on points over Martinez, Dulorme by KO over Figueroa, Kovalev by knockout over Cleverly.

Larry (Orange CT)

Hey is the Demtruis Andrade fight going to be rescheduled?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, will be Nov. 9 on what will now be a tripleheader with Donaire and Mikey Garcia.

Marc (Jersey)

Dan I just read Canelo weighed in at 166 with a month to go. Is that the norm for him a month out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

To be 14 pounds over with a month to go should be no issue.

Julian (Dallas/TX)

Winky Wright was one of my favorite fighters a while back, you think he has done enough to be a HOF'er (wins over Trinidad, Mosley in addition to being one of the most fear defensive technicians)

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Definitely. I will vote for him for sure.

Freddy (Arizona)

Dan I gotta ask you, what did you think about Chavez Jr's cut? well that's if you could call that a cut, to me that was all fake but I wanted to know your opinion

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

My opinion is right here: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/5044/uncertainty-for-ward-rigo-and-chavez

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Do you think Thurman-Ghost ends up on the Maidana-Broner undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Definitely possible. Scahefer has promised a big card for Nov. 9. I will hold him to it.

Mario (Houston, TX)

Dan tough decision on Monday Night, you watching boxing or RAW? I'll be watching boxing live and dvring RAW

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I will be doing the same thing.

Jason (San Antonio)

Why arent you ripping Chavez the same way you did Haye's toe?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Ripping him for what? Last I checked Chavez didn't talk smack for two years, then show up and dog it for the entire fight, show no heart or guts and refuse to fight, flop all over the mat for 12 rounds to get points deducted and then when it was over make excuses for his crap showing by saying his little toe was sore. Say what you want about Chavez, fine. He's a silver spooner, he doesn't train hard, he cuts corners, he smokes dope, whatever. But when the bell rings he fights like a warrior, which is more than I can say for Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

If you weren't already pumped for Mayweather-Alvarez just watch THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyVwI5Z-VBw&feature=c4-overview

Roy (Reno)

#toe

Jerome (NYC)

Jason, you are toetally out of line.

Ryan (NOLA)

200 $ for second row Alvarado v Provodnikov tix? Feel like I just robbed someone.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - People like Jason seem to forget that in both of their biggest fights when all seemed lost, one guy (Chavez) almost pulled off one of the most amazing and gutsiest comebacks, while the other (Haye) completely stunk up the joint and made excuses for it.

Dan (Toronto)

Fair to assume that Cleverly/Kovalev winner will take on Stevenson/Cloud winner?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

The Stevenson-Cloud winner is obligated to face Bellew next but after that I do think the winners could meet.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, which fight is the main event of the HBO telecast on September 28 ? Chavez is definately the bigger name but Stevenson - Cloud is the higher profile bout I would think ...

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Given the time zone differences I am told Stevenson-Cloud will open the telecast and then they go to the West Coast for the Chavez fight, which makes sense. Between the time zones and the fact that Chavez is clearly the bigger name I get it.

Freddy (Arizona)

Hahahahaha I like the "more like a paper cut" part and I never thought anything about the weight but you're right that may be it

Brendan (England)

You make me sick to my stomach because you are SO FLIPPING BIAS!!! Your a Klit fan so its ok for him to have a phantom injury??? If Klit had a BROKEN TOE you would have said "He is a WARRIOR, he fought with a broken toe." YOUR GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Another idiot.

Fred (NJ)

What was Roy Jones Jr's biggest win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

He's had many big wins. Hopkins, Ruiz, Tarver 1, Reggie Johnson, Virgil Hill. But the biggest I think is when he basically shutout James Toney.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, only one week until the Mares/Santa Cruz double-header. I have yet to see either in a dull fight and Stub Hub Center is the perfect venue. Will you be attending?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I like the fight and would like to attend but long ago I was booked for that weekend. It's my birthday weekend and my family comes down to Virginia for their annual summer visit and they will be here over that weekend, so I am taking a few days off and will not be at that fight.

V (CA)

Dan, can you see a scenario in which Cleverly beats Kovalev?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Yes I can. Cleverly is a fast fighter and a good boxer with a good chin so far. I can see him outboxing Kovalev and winning a decision.

jcs (edmonton)

inspired by your earlier link i just watched a few RJJ videos....guy was an unreal talent...truly dominant in his prime.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

People see him getting drilled now and looking horrible in a long fade, but as I have said, for those who don't remember go watch his earlier fights. He was King Kong in the mid-90s thru the mid-2000s.

Martin (Chandler, AZ)

HOLY CRAP did not see that coming..... very well said mr Dan

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

See what coming?

Juan Manuel Marquez [via mobile]

I will provide the drinks for your summer family birthday weekend.

Fred Garvin (NYC)

Dan, you are taking a fight weekend off? How dare you! In the immortal world of Brendan from England "YOUR GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL!!!"

Brian (Toronto)

Cue up Dan's annual birthday BBQ...

Justin (Seattle)

And for Bhop, his biggest thus far is fighting Father Time to a draw.

jcs (edmonton)

inspired by your earlier link i just watched a few RJJ videos....guy was an unreal talent...truly dominant in his prime.

Mike (DC)

Buy or sell: Floyd finishes his career undefeated?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Sell. It's too rare and his ego is too big to walk away. He will always think he will win until he doesn't. Someday he will lose some of that speed, the defense will cave and he will lose a step. No knock on Floyd. It's just what happens to them all and so at some point I think it will happen. Guys like Marciano or Calzaghe are very few and far between.

Tyson (toronto)

Do you view Diego Corrales as a future hof'er? It would seem that he deserves to be given that Gatti got in ...DC has more accomplishments and also a great deal of action fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

I can see Corrales being elected, yes. Several titles, some of the most awesome fights ever, consistently fought top opponents.

Julian (Dallas/TX)

you think Paul Spadafora is a first ballot HOF, undefeated fighter with 48 wins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I also believe in fairies, Santa and a pot of gold being at the end of the rainbow.

Martin (Chandler, AZ)

When you drilled the dude about comparison of Chavez and Haye. Nicely done.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Ahhh. Thanks.

Jeru (Brooklyn)

Excited to see Collazo back in the ring. What are your expectations? Is there enough left for him to make a serious run?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I think given that he is with GB, which has tons of top welterweights that if Collazo wins and looks OK that I can definitely see him getting another opportunity. He's from NY and GB does all the shows in Brooklyn so I think it's just a matter of time. I could see him getting a title shot maybe. Perhaps we might see a good crossroads fight between him and Sadam Ali, who just signed with GB. That's a great fight for a Barclays card.

Mario (Houston, TX)

What do you think of Eddie Gomez? How many more fights before we see him face some contenders at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I like Eddie, but he is still developing. He's looked pretty good on the Barclays shows I have seen him on. Just needs more experience. I'd say he needs at least 3-4 more fights and then I could see him making a move.

David (PWAY NJ)

just bought my tix to see Gaele-Barker! Hope it is a good atmosphere!

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Me too.

Adam (Aurora IL)

Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez Trailer [Dan Malik]..... Best Fight Trailer Ever!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

That was pretty cool.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

RJJ in his prime was an honor 2 watch!

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Back to the question earlier about the biggest Roy Jones wins I would also have to put the destruction of Montell Griffin in the rematch way up there. After the DQ he went out and didnt just win the rematch clean he absolutely destroyed Griffin in the first round. He came with the knockout agenda that night and just blew away a really good opponent.

James (Los Angeles)

Dan, by the way, Gabriel Rosado frustrated and exposed GGG in their fight for the first few rounds with good defense/counter punching. Of course, GGG later put on pressure that Rosado couldn't sustain, but in that fight GGG was exposed.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

GGG was sick as a dog with the flu and fever the day before the fight and still kicked his ass.

Brian (Toronto)

Wil Gary Russell ever fight someone with a pulse ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Having a pulse is, apparently, overrated by the Russell camp.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Is the Donaire, Garcia double header still slated for Dallas or San Diego, I mean San Antonio

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

TBA. There is no site yet.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, you know what else is pretty cool? That NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

greg (New orleans)

Dan the man. Serious question. Why has the love child been so inactive lately. Is he semi-retired?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Main Events says it has offered him fights and he has not accepted anything. I'd say he is retired or semi-retired or whatever you want to call it. Obviously, he has no interest in fighting at this point.

Steve (UK)

who is boxing monday night?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

It's the debut of the FS1 series. Danny Jacobs is in the main event vs. Giovanni Lorenzo.

Don (D. C.)

Frampton and Quigg over rated in England or top 10 material??

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Both have potential to be in the top 10.

Ryan (UK)

Does the Cleverly-Kovalev winner earn a HBO deal you think? The winner has a big claim to be one of the top 2 in the division.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I dont know about a deal but certainly the winner will be somebody that HBO would probably want for other major fights in that division, which they are deeply into.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Is HBO sending an announce crew to Wales for Cleverly-Kovalev?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

No, they will do the fight off monitors in Atlantic City.

vin (new york)

I hate when people talk about Rosado exposing GGG just bc GGG didn't put him down. Not only was he sick with the flu but Rosado lost every single second of that fight and the only reason he stayed on his feet was bc he was in there to survive, he let off one flurry of punches the whole fight (which GGG backed up bc hes not stupid) and other than that Rosado ran, held and covered up the rest of the fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Not only that but there was blood pouring out of his face.

Mike (Chicago)

Dan, apparently it's not part of the HBO telecast on Saturday, but what do you think of Mike Oliver vs the undefeated Joel Brunker, with Oliver coming off his tough fight with Billy Dib?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

It's a chance for Brunker to face an experienced guy who, at his best, is pretty solid. I am interested to see him. It's also a chance for HBO execs to take a look at him.

John John (Pitt)

Awwww poor GGG had the flu???? Give me a break Dan, you are a fan of his and thats why you are making excuses. I really wish ESPN would get a new Boxing writer. You play favorites too much. Thats the Hard Truth...

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I'm not making an excuse. His illness was well documented on the HBO 2 Days. I am speaking with facts. You are speaking with your hatred for me.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Cage Match: Captain Stubing, Gopher and Isaac, who gets out alive?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

These are my readers.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Assuming Trinidad and De La Hoya take up the first two spots for the 2014 HOF class, who's the third to get it: Calzaghe or Bowe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Calzaghe.

Mike (King Under The Lonely Mountain)

"You can pray/play on my downfall. But in the end you're in my chats"

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Anybody who actually thinks GGG was exposed by Rosado is simply a delusional Duane Ford fanboy.

Roger (OH)

Dan, if you don't feel like posting my ridiculously long question about the lineage earlier, I completely understand. But could you please just give me a yes or no answer: Could the lineal championship theoretically change hands in a scheduled 8 round fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Yes. All it takes is for the lineal champion to lose a fight at the weight. Doesnt matter 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. Whatever.

STEVE (TORONTO)

Is fres Oquendo a top 50 heavyweight of all time. Definately top 5 of his era. Lewis, klitschkos, oquendo. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

This is hilarious.

Slater (West by God Virginia )

Rosado exposed everyone to the fact that GGG has devastating power, did they not see his face? Actually we could all barely see his face through the blood

clay (chattanooga)

HOLY LORD! Ole John John clearly has nothing better to do with his time except waste ours with a pure HATE comment. find another chat dude...damn

slater (West by God Virginia)

DTM can you give us an example of a fight that lost money because the buyrate did not produce money to cover the purses. I remember people saying the pavlik bhop numbers were disappointing, does disappointing really mean lost money?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Arum lost seven figures without question on the Maskaev-Rahman heavyweight title rematch on PPV. That is one example but there are others I am sure that lost money.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

John John's dancing privileges have been revoked.

Eric (Los Angeles)

DTM, I'm wondering if any Jewish fight freaks like myself have expressed disappointment that Mayweather/Canelo is on Yom Kippur. That's not to say I think they should work their schedules around Jewish holidays, but Yom Kippur is the Jewish Super Bowl and a lot of us will not be purchasing the fight because we'll be in temple/at break the fasts.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I have heard that actually. One of the top ESPN executives has expressed that to me as well.

Vinnie (NYC)

John John is from Pittsburgh. You'd be angry with lots of spare time on your hands if you lived there too

Notorious JTB (Chicago)

Is Oquendo even top 500?

Saul (Toronto)

Do you know what's up with the Pascal/Bute situation? I heard that Pascal might be on the Stevenson undercard...and RDS (the French version of ESPN) reported that Bute might face Stevenson in January (even going with quotes saying that Bellew would step aside)...what's the deal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yvon Michel told me that Pascal might indeed fight on the Sept. 28 card in what would be a tune-up for Bute as far as I know. I do not think we will see Bellew step aside again. But I guess it's possible.

V (CA)

It's kind of funny how some people can hate someone without knowing or even having met them.

Frank (PHX)

So now Top Rank is going to go head to head w/ GB's PPV card on 11/09? when will this non sense war end

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

It's not one company picking to go head-to-head with the other. TR has an HBO date on Nov. 2 and GB is doing a Showtime PPV the same night.

Julian (Dallas/TX)

What do you think of the potential Thurman/Guerrero match up, who do you give the slight edge to?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I love the fight. Can see reasons to pick either guy. If the fight is actually made I will give it more thought.

Brian (Toronto)

Just reading " Maskaev-Rahman heavyweight title rematch on PPV " makes me smile. Not sure why. The fact this was a heavyweight title rematch, or the fact it was on PPV, or both.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It was actually a good fight and a good card. I was there in Vegas, dead of summer, like 116 outside.

Brian (Toronto)

Oquendo is a top 5,000, for sure

Rex (Westchester)

D $ Which fighter would you like to make love too?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

These are my readers.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - If Thurman/Guerrero is made, let's hope it's in San Diego so Thurman can thank all of the wonderful San Francisco fans.

p71 (Hartford)

Did Juan Diaz ever finish Law school?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

No, he never enrolled, although he took the LSAT exam. He fights Saturday night in Laredo, Texas in the UniMas main event.

Brett (Minneapolis)

I literally bit my tongue from laughing so hard at the Oquendo comment. My co-workers think im on drugs.

Paulo (Philadelphia)

Dan - Is TR planning to match the Pacquiao/Rios winner with the Marquez/Bradley winner?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

It obviously makes sense. While nothing is concrete they know it's a good possibility.

Adam (DuPage)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in all the gentle mockery of Keith Thurman's San Diego/San Antonio mix-up: He had just finished fighting a guy named DIEGO. That's a pretty understandable slip of the tongue.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

That's a great point. I had never thought of that. That said, it is gentle mockery. All in good fun.

The Met (T.O.)

Any chance John Ruiz gets inspired to prepare a protest that David Tua knocked him out with an illegal blow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

David (Chicago)

Does Roy Jones still commentate for HBO, I only remember seeing Ward lately

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Yes. Roy will be doing Saturday's broadcast.

Ed (The OC)

If James Kirkland makes a comeback...does he have a chance to contend at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Doubtful. I didnt view him as a legitimate title contender even before his layoff.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, here is a public service announcement: Fight Freaks, if any of your friends are getting married on September 14th, please be advised that there is a 50% chance it will end in divorce and you can attend the next one.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Epic.

Alex (Clev, OH)

Dan-O - What do you think of 50 Cent as a promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

He seems to want to do it. Building smartly with smaller shows, parterning with DiBella. To me it's all about if he is in it for the long haul. If so, he can be good for the sport.

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, my three year old niece suffered the same cut over her eyebrow that Chavez Jr. sustained and she had to miss one day of Gymboree so I can absolutely see why his fight had to be postponed.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Dan what will you watching Nov 9th, Mikey Garcia Donaire double header or Broner vs Maidana ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

If it comes down to that head-to-head situation I would likely be in Vegas at Broner-Maidana.

Fran (Pittsburgh)

Who do you think is next for Wilder?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

From what Schaefer says, he would like to match him with the Mitchell-Arreola winner.

Mario (Houston, TX)

Dan will there be a special FNF card during May-Canelo week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

No.

Brett (Minneapolis)

Looking back Danimal, i dont think the freaks are looking at the Broner-Maidana PPV the same way you are. I think what they are trying to say is 150k buys would signal that Broner failed as a PPV attraction and you are arguing that if the promoter makes money then it is successful, arguing different points really.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I do not agree with that. Every fighter has to start somewhere. I dont know what the buys will be but you start and see what you do and try to build from there. Oscar was not a mega PPV guy at first. It took a few fights to really buid up. Mayweather same thing. His early PPV fights were solid but not huge. Even the Hatton fight didnt crack a million buys. But then things blew up.

Koichi (NYC)

You watching Summerslam this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

I might order it. Gametime decision on Sunday night.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

What do you make of Angel Garcia mad about all the money HBO and TR paying Shimming?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Sour grapes. Shiming is paid because he is bringing the money to the event. Period.

Geoff (Maryland)

Man, following Broner on Twitter is like watching a car crash...the dude talks about sex like a kid that just hit puberty...pretty weird.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

It's actually pretty sad. I find it hard to follow him at this point.

mike (NY)

Hatton/Mayweather didnt do 1million buys!?! Never knew that. Wow

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

It did not. It did about 850k as I recall. In the UK, however, it did massive on the PPV.

Roy (Reno)

I must be a bad friend/relative. I refuse to attend any wedding/party that is also scheduled on the same day as any big fight or Raider game. The lone exception was my grandparents 50th which fell on the same day as Raiders vs Jets, but we made sure the TV's showed the game.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I love a guy who sticks to his convictions.

Vic G (San Antonio, TX)

Dan I saw on a boxing website that you were the #1 guy to follow on twitter for boxing. Paulie was #2. lol That's bad ass tho that your #1

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

If that's the case I am honored.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, personally I believe a big reason Money and Pac consistently did 1 million purchases is because of the potential matchup. I think that fight not coming to fruition will continue to cost both figthers 200-300K PPV purchases.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I totally agree. Once the specter of that fight was gone -- or at least gone in the sense that it would match the 2 top fighters in the sport -- the public got sick of it. That is why Mayweather-Guerrero didn't do a million buys and was way less than expected. That is why I very much doubt Pacquiao-Rios tops a million. That said, Mayweather-Canelo will do a huge number, in large part because of how the Latin fans will support the event because of Canelo.

Mike (DC)

Stevenson-Kovalev in a year would be ridiculous!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Why should it take that long?

slater (West by God Virginia)

Norman Stone lol how awesome would it have been to have him in one corner and angel Garcia in the other it would have turned into a very entertaining debacle for sure

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Bite your tongue.

Aaron (MI)

Would you be surprised to see Kelly Pavlik fight again? Its a crime we will never see Pavlik vs Chavez Jr or Pavlik vs Golovkin.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

No, wouldn't shock me.

Al (York Pa)

Dan: Have you ever been to Bob Arums home as a guest?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

No.

Mike (King Under The Lonely Mountain)

I gotta ask; no future fights for Epix as of late?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Not this year.

Vinnie (NYC)

Are you going to pop back up to NYC after Saturday for the inaugral Monday Night Boxing series?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

No. Going to AC on Saturday, driving home on Sunday.

Peter (NYC)

Danny Jacobs has to have one of the more 'feel good' stories of all-time. If he can stay on track for a world title, he deserves all platforms to hear his story and all the good work he does.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

He is a super nice guy too. I cannot speak more highly of him.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, if HBO doesn't buy Haye-Fury, will another network pick it up? This is one overseas fight I am really looking forward to.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

As I have said since the fight was made I think it ultimately winds up as a PPV in the US.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

As I have said since the fight was made I think it ultimately winds up as a PPV in the US.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

Dan - Saw KISS play an acoustic set at a private event last night. Have tickets to their show tonight in Orlando. Just letting you know.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Awesome! I got to meet the band last summer at their show in Bristow, VA and Mrs. DTM and I had our picture taken with them. Was a blast!

David (Cape Canaveral)

King Freak, good wknd for Boxing, excited for the Mollo-Spzilka rematch, anticipating another crude slugfest, both look to be in much better condition...who ya' got?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

I dont think it can be anything other than a crude slugfest and I hope it is another one. Loved their first fight.

Mike (King Under The Lonely Mountain)

Damn Haye-Fury isn't PPV material; it belongs on HBO WCB or Epix. Two British fighters on American PPV. SMH

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

It's fine as a small afternoon PPV, especially with Quigg and Andy Lee on the undercard. It is what it is.

David (Chicago,IL)

Hey has a fighter ever seen your comments on him, n then called you out on it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Of course.

Vinnie (NYC)

I am excited about the launch of Fox Sports 1. The new Monday Night Boxing series should be fun. Any word on the fate of FNF? I heard that a producer of the show was let go in the ESPN layoffs a few months ago.

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

FNF is just fine. There are two excellent cards left this season and then it will be back in January for next season.

James (Portland, ME)

Anything official for Lomachenko's first opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Nothing yet.

Tom (Yonkers, NY)

Did Cano get on the Mayweather/Canelo undercard because GB ran out of money to spend on the PPV? (If so, I'm totally OK with that)

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I dont know. It is a pretty random fight for him to be on that show against Theophane. I think what it came down to was that Floyd had just signed Theophane and wanted him on the PPV. So once that was established GB had to find a solid welterweight for him to fight and Cano is always going to be in a good fight so there you go.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Thanks for the chat Fight Freaks. Hope you enjoy the weekend fights. I'm headed to AC tomorrow for the HBO so follow me on Twitter @danrafaelespn for updates throughout the show. Check out all the stories and blogs and I will talk to you next week -- but next week I will be chatting on Thursday instead of Friday, so make sure you make note of that! Have a great weekend. Peace.
