Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to the fastest hour in golf!! Last week of the regular season, it went fast didn't it? So now what going into the Playoffs? And how do y'all feel about the caddie races getting banned by the Tour? Time for you to have your voice heard... BRING IT!!!

Evan Almighty (Indy)

MC. Can something be done to Jim Furyk about his tedious putting routine? I literally can't watch anymore when he putts. In the final round on Sunday, I timed his putt on 16, and it look him one minute and 45 seconds (and that was as TV was coming back from commercial) to pull the trigger. I know it was a big putt, but what about slow play on the greens?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

It is funny sometimes when he backs off a few times. Also seems to get more " deliberate" the closer he is to the lead of the tournament and the closer to the 18th he gets on Sunday. Other than putting him on the clock the only thing you can do is close your eyes.

Bryce (NC)

Hello MC! What's your schedule looking like in the upcoming weeks? What events will you be at?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

I'm at the Tour Championship, Web.com Tour Championship, and the Presidents Cup. Three in a row!! WOOHOO!!!!

Paul (Portland, OR)

MC, so there's talk about Rory seeing a sports psychologist at some point (at least Farrell mentioned it in yesterday's chat). Why does nobody talk about Tiger needing one, seeing one? Would he even admit it if he did?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

I've been saying that for weeks! No, he'd never admit to seeing one. That would show weakness, you ever know Tiger to show perceived weakness? Me either.

Andrew (WI)

I can't believe the tour banned ANYTHING that happened at Scottsdale. That's supposed to be the exception to every rule, the one time of year golf can let its pants down.

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Not sure "pants down" is the term I'd use but banning the races when you're not the caddies employer seems a bit over the top... ESPECIALLY at that tournament

Bryce (NC)

Banning caddie races is stupid but what goes through a players head when the caddie drops all of his clubs running to the green? Haha

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

As long as the clubs are ok, no harm no foul. That being said, if a player told his caddie, no racing this year. NO chance in _____ the caddie is racing. So really it's up to the player if he wants to see his boy run. Most guys do!

Shoshana (30ft from Farrell)

How about this, instead of caddie races, we give them a taser to go after mashed potatoes guy?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

HHMMMM.... that actually may be the only thing that would be an ok trade in my opinion.

Jim (NW Wisco)

The Tour banning the caddie races just reinforces my opinion that they only cater to the hoi ploi (sp?)...not to the average Joe like me.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

And that they want NO part in the caddies getting any publicity because of what could happen.

Steve (New York, NY)

What do you think of Liberty National? I know the players don't seem to like it too much.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

I'd be anxious to see what the changes have been, but when I caddied there Vijay had the funniest comment, "They ruined a perfectly good landfill!" Baahaha

Andrew (WI)

I'm with Shoshana. Steve Williams + taser = entertainment.

Joe (Connecticut)

Isn't it seemingly ironic the announcement of the banning of Caddie races times seemingly close with everyone telling the PGA Tour to ban people yelling stuff like "MASHED POTATOES"?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

The irony is the tour has more say over the spectators. The caddies allow themselves to be ruled. They are not employed or paid by the PGA Tour. So if they wanted to join together as a unit the tour would have a serious force to deal with.

Jim (NW Wisco)

Good point!

Bryce (NC)

We need a 59 watch to have MC chat with us for a few hours!

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

NO we don't! lol. I'm at my mom's house with my two little guys and still have to pack for our trip home tomorrow!! All while making sure Nana doesn't cry too much when we leave!

Dan (CA)

Did you listen to Dufner's appearance on Howard Stern this week? Great interview. Talked about the Baba Booey's/Mashed Potato's. Duf didn't seem to mind it. Do you know how other players feel?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Players are not fans of it but if they say it's a pain in the "you know what" guess what happens? More knuckleheads scream it because what are the consequences? Nothing.

Shoshana (30ft from Farrell)

You coming to DBC?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

No. Lobbied hard to get it but got shot down. Gotta get to Fenway. It's still on my bucket list.

Keith H (Seattle)

What were the caddie races?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Started at Colonial. Par 3 13th...

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

The 14th tee is backwards from the 13th green so caddies would drop the bags and walk with the player to the green only carrying the towel. Spectators would bet on which caddie made the green first. Well caddies found out about the gambling and started having fun with it. The tournament even started selling t shirts at the hole. Then the same thing started happened at TPC Scottsdale. Crowd players and caddies really got into it. It WAS awesome!

Mike P (Lenexa, Ks)

At what point do we give Tiger a break about the winless major streak.. Jack went 3 years (twice) and 5 years between winning majors... so all told Jack has 11 total years of not winning a major and still won 18... Tiger is only in year 5 and by this logic has atleast 6 more years or a winless drought...

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

The biggest thing people don't mention when they talk about Jack though is that his body didn't break down. THAT may be the biggest issue for Tiger in the future.

Joe (Connecticut)

Alright MC, give it to me straight. Who wins the FedEx Cup this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Tiger. He'll win the Tour Championship and maybe one of the playoff events. It'll wrap up POY too.

Bryce (NC)

Does Jordan Spieth deserve to be a captains pick for the Presidents Cup?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Without question if he isn't on the team, I'm gonna make a video throwing a fit!

Jim (NW Wisco)

Your thoughts on the Solheim Cup and the USA's chances?

Grossman (California)

Please comment: The U.S. Solheim Cup Team couldn't beat most major college teams. The depth of the team is so shallow that it includes Michelle Wie, currently ranked 82nd in the world and falling fast. And frankly, the entire event has lost nearly all of its prestige; U.S. v. Europe in women's golf is the equivalent of Costa Rica v. Namibia in the Ryder Cup.

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

I love the passion of the Cup... I do wonder what would happen if this year at the President's Cup all the guys wore face paint like the girls. Just sayin'. Seriously though, The US Team should get whooped but then it's funny how an event like this gets people to lift their game to old heights. I'm a fan.

Chuck (NM)

Hate to be that guy, but the hoi polloi is the word for many average Joes. Its literal translation is "the many."

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

That's like saying, "No disrespect..." and the next thing you say is gonna be SO disrespectful!! HAHAHA

Andrew (WI)

We need to find a more dangerous activity for the caddies to do on 16 at TPC Scottsdale in protest. Maybe some obstacle course.

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I thought about it this morning and wondered what the tour would think if the players took off the bibs and let the players carry the bags on that hole. Caddies could walk around the grandstand an wait on 17th tee for players. TV would have to explain why players were carrying there own bags and tour players who forced their player to carry the bag would out themselves as not being in support of the caddies.

Casey (AZ)

If Phil wins the Tour Championship and/or Fedex cup, is he POY?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Oh yeah!

Steve (Colbert)

I'm thinking about going to the Masters next year. Can you give me some advice on the cheapest way to get tickets, and where to stay?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Don't stay in Augusta. Stay about 45 minutes away and drive in. There are scalpers and brokers around Augusta but I can't legally recommend you use them.

Mike P (Lenexa, Ks)

Michael to your point though... Jack did battle weight issues his whole career and he will tell you that.. which as you know the stomach will affect the center of gravity and how far you have to reach to swing the club.. I think that Tiger's breakdown was normal for not only his playing style but the physicality he was using his body (torque, flex)

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

But remember David Duval lost his game after going fitness crazy. So did Carl Pettersson. I'm saying Jack didn't have multiple major surgeries throughout his career.

Doug (GA)

MC, I seem to recall Jack battling back issues for part of his career.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

I don't know a pro golfer who doesn't have back issues.

JD (CT)

How about a caddie swim at the 17th at Sawgrass?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

And walk 18 all soaked? YUCK! No thanks.

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Actually 63 makes more sense. Par isn't really relevant. If you didn't know the hole was a par 4 or par 5 the object is still the same, get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. The -10 and -8 stuff came about so that tv could show you where everyone stood on the course.

Doug (NJ)

Congrats on the Dufner win MC, you called it.Question - isn't it idiotic to say that 63 is the lowest score in a major since they are played on courses ranging from par 70 to par 72? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that 9 under par is the lowest score in a major? Just seems like any record that has a number of strokes attached should also take into account strokes relative to par. And instead of talking about 59's can't we talk about -13 or -11, etc.? Your thoughts? Isn't par what matters, not the number of strokes?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Like Jeopardy I did the answer first! LOL

Ty (Texas)

MC, you da man! might still type with your index fingers but as a caddy you got a better perspective than all the rest of these uppity clowns. I think the phrase is Real Talk, that's the way it is, peace

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Appreciate it Ty. Thank you

Ken (VA)

Can you tell us something we might not already know about the rookie Patrick Reed? Have been real impressed with him this year and his high level of performance is continuing this week. Is he surprising insiders?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Any "insiders" that say they saw the kind of success are a bit suspect to me, because I never heard anyone talking about him in the past. The funny thing is, early this year he looked a bit uncomfortable missing 8 of his first 13 cuts. Looks like he found his feet now though, huh?!

Shoshana (30ft from Farrell)

Who are you leaving off the Presidents Cup team? If the top 10 stays the same, Webb, Bubba, Furyk. Horschel would all be on the outside looking in

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Furyk

Andrew (WI)

I think in honor of the tour apparently being fine with MASHED POTATOES guy, I should yell it after every single post you make in this chat. It'll really enrich the chat experience for all involved, obviously.

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

I would hunt you down, and stuff mashed potatoes in your gas tank. Then act confused when you didn't think it was funny.I really hope everyone knows we're both kidding.

Jake (Greenville, SC)

How did you and Couch get hooked up? I have always thought I would be a good looper and wondered how you got in with a player.

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

We met in Milwaukee his rookie year on tour. Realized we both lived in Gainesville and a couple years later hooked up on the Nationwide Tour. He was the one who said, "When ever you're not doing comedy you work for me." And that was that.

Dan (CA)

As long as the fans are yelling Baba Booey after the players hit and not during the swing, is it that big a deal? The dude that yelled Chewbacca at Dufner last week had me laughing.

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

The problem is the guys who are not timing it correctly, and then everyone is trying to one up the last guy. There's a REALLY easy fix, turn off the mics when the players settle over the shot. Why can't tv do that?

John (Nashville)

Given the number of people watching the players every move on the course, I'm guessing this hasn't happened, but I'll ask anyway: ever hear of a pro caddie leaving a club on a previous hole by accident? Maybe a player laid it done and he didn't see it or something. I know I leave a wedge by the green every once in a while...

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

I've done that! Happens more than you think too especially around green side bunkers. Caddie is raking and player lays club in the grass instead of on the bag when taking the putter. Caddie finishes raking picks up the bag, never sees the club. OOPS!

Tom (Verona, WI)

Would you prefer to have the PGA Championship in February to ease the crowded summer golf schedule?

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

No. I want the Masters as the first major of the year. Wouldn't mind the PGA being in October of November though.

Ricardo (South of the Border in Paradise)

Turn the mics off before the shot? Are U crazy? The mics are there to record the sound of THE SHOT!

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Because you don't know what a driver sounds like... if you listen closely you can hear me laughing at that excuse.

Nemes (P-Town)

If Tiger performs next year similar to this past year in majors and is still stuck on 14 after the 2014 PGA Championship, aren't his chances of catching Jack slim-to-none? Another year, wear & tear on his body, and the ever growing lineup of players getting their majors. He can't drive it straight enough and putt well enough at the same time.

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

I think Tiger will win a major next year BUT, if he doesn't, the chase for 18 might just be lost. And that would stink

Tom (Verona, WI)

There are six South African players (still including Oosty) among the top 10 for the Presidents Cup international team. Sponsors must be salivating for those South African television ratings.

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

International Team may not be a huge ratings boost!

Steve (Colbert)

I'm surprised fans aren't yelling their own names, or saying "I love you (wife's name)!"

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Can you imagine?! " I LOVE YOU BETTY SMITH!!!" I just wanna hear a guy start to yell and then get punched in the throat. That would make players and caddies REALLY bust a gut laughing.

Tom (Verona, WI)

Thanks for chat, MC! Congrats on getting your caddie racing video approved for posting.

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

The whole thing didn't... but... getting some really nice text messages from caddies and industry insiders.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Told ya it would go too fast!! Have a great weekend everyone! Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel... Monday!!Play well this weekend.Your Boy,MC
