It's the fastest hour in golf!! Speaking of fast... I GOTTA know how y'all felt about the pace of play with the Solheim Cup? FedEx Cup... Tiger gonna breeze to the $10 million? And is anyone more worthy of ROY than Jordan Spieth? BRING IT!!!
Team events in golf are great. The passion that you show for your teammates and country is great to see in golf as it is an individual sport. But for the second straight time the U.S. women on the Solheim Cup squad have made us look like "ugly Americans." In 2011 they came out wearing boxing gloves on Sunday, only to get beat 7-5 in the session and lose the cup. This weekend was no different, as even I was sick of seeing Paula Creamer do her stupid John Cena hand gesture. It's one thing to be excited after sinking a putt, but Creamer went 1-3 this weekend but would celebrate a halved hole like she won a match 5 and 4. Here's an idea, win your matches and then do all the celebrating you want when you're spraying champagne holding the cup after.
What about the "walk off"? Can't believe our team did that when they were LOSING. I asked a couple friends what they thought of it and they all said it was great drama but wouldn't let their daughters act like that. That says something to me.
Great win by Patrick Reed yesterday (props to whoever mentioned him in Friday's chat). Would/have you ever caddied for your spouse?
No chance I would/could caddie for my spouse. Cops and ambulance would be there by the third tee box trying to bring me back to life!
Hi MC. Thoughts on the Solheim Cup? Michelle Wie held her own but couldn't hole any putts (but the whole team didn't putt well). How about 17 year old Charley Hull? Hedwall?! Pretty impressive, but disappointing for the U.S. Can't wait to see these golfers close-up in a couple of weeks as a marshal at the Safeway classic (though my back may be to half the shots!).
The golf was amazing, but the behavior was too much like a reality show for me. It went past gamesmanship and turned more "Jersey Shore" which I just can't appreciate.
Michael, What's with all the note taking by players and caddies during the round? The yardage book must be full of scribbles after 6 rounds.
Most caddies take lots of notes (especially this week at a redesigned course) when the wind is from a new direction or a new hole location. More info for a caddie is never a bad idea. Also when we get fired... our secrets come with us!
Hey MC - In watching the Solheim Cup yesterday I realized the best women's golfers in the world are not even there - most are Asian - any thoughts to changing the event or having a similar event to the President's Cup?
There will be a format that has countries from around the world playing in team competition in 2014 sometime.
MC - does Tiger win a playoff event?
He wins this week and probably Tour Championship.
Any chance Michelle Wie gets a putting lesson from Steve Stricker?
She's already been to the Stockton's and if they can't help, Stricker has NO chance
Who do you like for the Barclay's and why? Who might be some good sleeper picks?
Expert Picks should be posted tomorrow afternoon.espn.com/golf
A joke: How many LPGA officials does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Just one, but it'll take 30 minutes to determine where the bulb last crossed a lateral hazard line.
More like three... one two screw it in, one to take it out and move the outlet, and a third to call the 5th and 6th officials to ask if they can read the lightbulb handbook... in Italian
At either Firestone or the PGA, the caddies didn't have to rake the bunkers. Why not do that every week on tour? Seems like it might speed things up a little bit and I am sure there are tons of junior golfers that would be thrilled to walk inside the ropes and do that job for free.
Actually it's at the Open Championship. But on the PGA Tour part of the caddies job is to rake the bunkers in the correct manner. Doesn't slow down play because the players in the group behind would have to wait for the bunker to be raked anyway.
Why are all American teams getting beat so often in these major Cups. What do think about Coach K being a captain
I think it's because Americans are so much about "I'm gonna get mine" when they get on tour, they have a difficult time switching back to the "team" concept. The European Tours are very different then the US tours and that's where the team unity is better than ours.
Im glad the women's game doesn't have a presidents cup sort of thing. We would get throttled! Haha
With two events to go Bubba, DJ, Stricker, Horschel and Speith are all on the outside of the Pres Cup top 10. Which two are you taking? And are you glad you're not Fred Couples?
I'll take Horschel and Speith. I want the fire of Horschel and who's playing better than Speith?
If Tiger win one or two Playoff tournaments and the FedEx Cup...that gives Tiger 7 wins + FEDEX Cup...how can one not vote him player of the year?
If he were to only win the Tour Championship that would be enough for POY in my book
Clutcher shot - Spieth's putt on first playoff hole or Reed's 2nd shot at the 2nd playoff hole? Both were great.
Reed's 2nd shot on the 10th... after he thought he was done... took some serious stones.
MC - is tiger toast chee when it comes to his pursuit of 18?
If he goes major winless next year, I'm gonna get VERY shaky on if he can catch Jack.
Virtually nobody in the Solheim Cup plays on the Ladies Euro tour. And at this point virtually everyone in the Ryder Cup plays on the PGA Tour. Which is another way of saying I'm not buying the whole tour culture is what makes the difference argument
My argument is European culture is much different than American culture. And even though the women and men don't play there now, doesn't mean they didn't embrace the "we" when they did.
Hey Michael, Loved your video blog on the PGA banning caddie races, What you should have done to address the real issue is have Bubba and Teddy on each side of just off camera while you were trying to talk yelling MASHED POTATOES or BoohYa or whatever all the idiots are yelling! Maybe a redo coming up?
good idea, but maybe we do it to people at their jobs.
Does Patrick Reed set a precedent for all winning golfers to follow and pay his caddy 100% of his winnings?!?
I have a sneaking suspicion the account has his name on it, but his wife/caddie has the ATM Card! HAHAHA
You made the point that caddies don't work for the PGA Tour. Given that, why would the Tour provide funds for caddies' retirements? Why not have the caddies' employers (the players) do that?
The PGA Tour doesn't employ the players, yet they establish a retirement fund for them. Players are REQUIRED to have a caddie. Not by themselves, but by the tour, so why should the players be responsible? It would be nice, but I still believe it's not their responsibility.
Will we begin to see Tiger being paired with a younger player at the Cup competitions? Playing with Stricker or Furyk has not been productive so time for a change needed...
And what better place to get some practice together than the Presidents Cup?
You know who is laying better than Speith? Dufner! Have we already forgotten about the Duff daddy???
Top 10 for the US Presidents Cup team: Woods, Snedeker, Mickelson, Kuchar, K Bradley, Dufner, Haas, Mahan, Z Johnson, Simpson. At this point who would be your two additions?
See... Duff is already qualified.
The pace of play at the Solheim Cup and the Wyndham was ridiculous. An chance that the game will ever speed up?
None. There's too much money on the line. The other thing is the sport. We want everything right now and fast. Golf isn't that way. You have to actually set aside time to play.
Do you expect Tiger to play in each of the first 3 FedEx events? I have tickets to the BMW! Will I get to see him?
I can't see him taking one event off (especially BMW, no cut, only 70 guys) so you'll get to see him.
MC, as a professional caddy yourself, what are your thoughts on Patrick Reed winning with his wife on the bag? I think it is nice, but based on what I have learned from you, he will need to hire a professional if he wants to take his game to the next level.
I think she'll be on his bag for a while but if she stops caddying it's gonna be a tough job for the first guy/girl who caddies for Patrick because you won't just be answering to him. But as successful as the two of them are together, I can't see her stopping for at least a year or two.
MC, Are you chatting this weekend from the Barclays? If not when will you?
Not from Barclays, just doing my normal Friday chat at 3.
Besides yourself...and not counting ex players....who is the most knowledgeable media scribe?
I'm not even in the top 25 in most knowledgeable with stuff off the top of my head. Our own Bob Harig is definitely in the top 5, but some guys know history stuff and some know stats. Depends on what you mean.
Do guys go and scout a place like Conway Farms or do they not do that with non-major venues?
Normally don't do it for a non major. Because there's a week off between events though we'll go a few days early.
Yeah but the PGA Tour pays the players. Players pay the caddies. It'd be nice if the tour helped out the caddies though, especially since they're stepping into the business of regulation them.
The tour distributes the money, they're a non profit. And they've been regulating caddies, it's not new.
how many comments/questions do you get on an average chat?
really depends on the event. The Friday at Firestone when Tiger was chasing 59... in two hours had over 3k. Weeks he isn't playing, anywhere from 75-200. It really does vary.
Was Rory's play at the PGA him finding more comfort or a little fluky given the rest of his year?
I really believe he turned a corner at the PGA. I expect him to make the Tour Championship in the playoffs.
The tour is in NYC for the week, so are their are higher than normal percentage of players with WAG's in tow? And how worried are they for their wallets?
And the tournament usually sets up a shopping trip for the women... most should be TERRIFIED!! HAHA
Do you use a green screen for your videos? Then if you would wear a green shirt...hilarity!
No green screen for me. If I'm not on-site at the tournament, the back drop is the golf course behind my house.
Is it more mental with Michelle Wie's putting now? With the amount of off time the LPGA tour has and the access she has to be the best coaches in the world, it's mind blowing her putting performance (let alone the setup).
Just goes to show how mental the game can be and what it will force you to try. It's very mental.
Michael if you wife hears you saying that she would get mad.
she's not a shopper and she'd be the first to tell you that
Shoshana - simple solution to the players and WAG's - pull a Patrick Reed and make them your caddy so they don't go through the bank account!!!!
A WAG shopping trip? That's a good way to get players to the event. Well I'm going, so you'd better be there :p
I know a wife that called another wife at an event and asked if she could grab a gift bag even though her husband wasn't in the event!!
Everyone rips Michelle Wie for being over coached etc, and then they rip her new putting stance. Which was all her working on her own. Make up your mind people :)
For me it always comes down to one thing: Does the ball go in the hole? Then who cares what it looks like and if people make fun of it. Cause most of the knuckleheads making fun of it, CAN'T BEAT YOU!
@Ed Given what most WAG's have to deal with in terms of travel etc, they're more than entitled to go through the bank account in my book.
while I won't go as far as saying I disgaree on your team concept (USA vs EUR), the Solheim Cup was lost strictly bc of putting. and I can't say a team, or solo, attitude, affects that
But if your girlfriend heard you saying that?
HAHA!! Now if I made a snappy comeback on THAT comment... there'd be all kinds of trouble. ;)
Have there been any redesigns at Pinehurst, Hoylake or Valhalla since those venues last hosted Majors? Looks like 4 very long tracks next year. DJ and Jason Day must be thinking they're next in line to be first time winners...
Yeah, Pinehurst got a touch up by Crenshaw. But I agree with the DJ and Jason Day sentiment.
We finally won at one thing at the Solheim Cup... we dressed better! Whoever picked those out should be on task for the Ryder Cup.
What changes, if any, can Paula Creamer make to her swing to get longer off the tee?
The problem with looking for length is, you end up looking for your golf ball too much. It's better to be short and straight off the tee. An extra 15 yards doesn't mean as much if you're in the rough or a hazard
Well you can always expect my chats to go by fast!! But it's ok, we'll do it again Friday! Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!!Have a great week everyone.MC
