We'll get rolling with the Big 12 chat in a sec. Keep sending in your questions, comments and opinions.
I think Jaxon Shipley is one if not the most underrated player in college football he is Texas' biggest playmaker with his ability to catch run and throw he just dosnt have a great QB to throw to him like his brother did. Agree or Disagree
I like Shipley. In fact, I like Mike Davis, too. This is Texas' best receiving corps since Jordan Shipley was around. QB has been a problem, but I like what I heard with Ash so far through camp. He was terrific in their scrimmage Sunday night. If Ash finally breaks out, Jaxon could have a big year, too.
Who do you think will end the year as 1st team All-Big 12 QB?
I'm leaning toward Baylor's Bryce Petty. He has no competition and a ton of firepower around him. He could have a monster year in that offense.
Jake, Great job on your posts B12 style. Keep it up.Inside word on the qb situation at OU?
Thanks, woof. Still feel Bell will be named the starter. But Trevor Knight has outplayed him in the two scrimmages. This is closer than anyone thought it would be two months ago.
Sadly, I Agree. Thank you so much for commenting back. Hook Em
Whats your take on the gophers
The golden ones?
Jake,It seems as if the most exciting part of BIG 12 football will occur in the last month of the regular season. As I look at it Baylor and Texas have the toughest last 4 game stretch of the season with Oklahoma State also having a tough final 3 game stretch. What're the chances the Big 12 Champion is one of those 3 teams and more so, what're the chances it comes down to those final 3-4 games and how each team handles them?
The last month is always important, but October is really key, too. TCU plays at OU, OSU, hosts Texas; OU plays TCU, Texas; Texas plays OU, goes to TCU. OSU hosts TCU. Have a feeling those games will narrow the field to November, where the league will be ultimately won.
I guess I don't get it. If Trevor Knight has outplayed Bell in the scrimmages why would coaches go with Bell? If coaches are going to go against what they see on the field why practice??
This is just my feeling, but I assume they feel more comfortable with Bell. There's a little bit of an establishment mentality in Norman. Stoops has never done anything like Gundy did last summer when he named Lunt the starter and stunned everyone. It's possible they do go with Knight. Just being around the program the last 6 years, I have a hard time seeing it.
What's your take on the LSU/TCU game? Do you think it's an advantage to catch LSU early given their losses on the defensive side of the ball?
The key will be Pachall. Is he the same guy? If so, TCU ought to have enough offense to win this game. If he's rusty, then it could smack of last year's BWW bowl. The TCU D will be ready to play, even without Fields.
Freshman to make biggest impact this year is ______
Baylor WR Robbie Rhodes. He's been lighting it up in fall camp.
How much will Notre Dame beat Oklahoma by this year? GO IRISH
A field goal? I see this game being close, with both sides adjusting to their QB situations.
Do you see Trevor knight winning out the starting position? Also if Oklahoma played FSU again this year who do you think would've won?
Depends where the game were played. In Norman, OU. In Tallahassee, FSU. I feel less confident about Bell winning the job than I did a month ago, but he's still the favorite to start vs. Monroe.
I would have a hard time seeing them not picking Bell too. I agree with you on the establishment comment with this staff. Might explain why this program feels stale and is having a hard time recruiting right now.
Lots of talk about Texas Tech's QB situation. What does true freshman bring to the table that Michael Brewer doesn't, presuming Brewer is out for the first few games?
Not a question of what Brewer does or doesn't bring to the table. Question of his back. If Brewer is 100 percent, he's the guy. Problem is, he's not 100 percent.
Is David Ash a QB that could get a talented Texas team into a bcs bowl this year
We all know Blake Bell can run the ball! How is he going to be throwing the ball for a whole season?
He'll be fine, but OU fans are going to miss Landry Jones more than they would care to admit.
Why is Bob Stoops so patient with Kish. Kish has not brought in a single elite LB and now he is losing second tier LBs to Tech, Baylor and Oklahoma St, schools that are not even known for their defense. Just how much does this guy have to screw up before he gets fired?
Kish needs to go.
Took 14 minutes for the Kish haters to get going. New record.
how good is Bryce Petty going to be and where would you rank him among the Big 12 QBs?
I mean, you could make a case for Petty, Pachall, Ash, Chelf, Walsh as the Big 12's best QB, and I wouldn't say you have a bad argument. I give Petty the edge to be the All-Big 12 QB, because of supporting cast, the amount of snaps he'll get (all of them) and talent, which he has a lot of.
I keep hearing OU plans to use the TE a lot more, but there is no mention as to who is leading the race. So who is going to be OU's staring TE?
Could see them use Trey Millard a lot there. The other three guys will play some, but none is a standout at this moment.
Jake, how big are the 3 Big 12 - SEC matchips? Would be nice to get some positive momentum for the league. Of course, if the SEC goes on to win another NC....
They are crucially important. Imagine the perception of the league if TCU and OSU -- 2 of the Big 12 frontrunners -- got rolled by the SEC on neutral sites. It would be cataclysmic. On the flipside, it's an opportunity to narrow the perception gap, which is important in the subjective world of college football.
Jake, please explain how the pre-season poll does not taint the entire polling system. These 25 teams, ranked based on nothing but speculation and reputation, begin the season as pre-selected favorites with a built-in advantage over unranked teams. Why not let all 100+ teams begin with a clean slate and allow the actual games to dictate the rankings?
It's a fair point. And with the Big 12 starting outside the Top 10, it's a disadvantage. Goes to my previous point -- the perception battle is important in college football.
. I'm really excited about OSU's defense. Does Oklahoma State have the best DL and LB in the conference
TCU has the best d-line when Fields is in there, but OSU might have the best DT combo with Barnett/Castleman. There's no LB corps that really sticks out. OSU, OU, Baylor, Texas, are all about the same.
Another question for you Jake:The Preseason Polls don't have 1 BIG 12 team in the Top 12 but 4 teams in the Top 25. How many (if any) and who ends up in the Top 12 at seasons end and how many (if any) and who ends up in the Top 25?
OSU, OU, TCU, Texas and Baylor will all end up in the Top 25, with the champ cracking the Top 10.
How will David Ash do this year?
I think he could have a breakout season. The RBs, WRs are there. The OL should be better. He's in his 3rd year. Those are reasons to believe.
No way in HELL, West Virginia is the 8th best team in the conference. The defense will be improved, Trickett is better than most QB's in the conference, and every RB takes a backset to Sims. This is at least an 8 win team, it not 9.
They had 3 of the best offensive players in the country last year and finished 4-5 in the league. I could see them finishing ahead of Tech, especially with the Brewer injury. Maybe K-State, with all the newcomers on defense. But who else?
Jake,Any BIG 12 talks of expansion? Possibly trying bring in some of the other Texas schools out there: SMU, Houston, Rice
All quiet on the expansion front.
Are there two Ben's from Cali-- one the cheers for OSU and the other the cheers for WV or is there some idiot trying to troll this chat. Because swear both of the comments posted under the name Ben were equally insane
Hey Jake, what is your take on Texas RB Malcolm Brown this fall? I watched him play highschool ball at Steele High here in Cibolo and have been a fan of his since. How is he faring in fall camp this year?
Gray is going to be the featured guy, but Brown will still get a lot of touches along with Bergeron. Hearing good things about the UT backfield.
Honestly Jake, How many college QB's breakout in their 3rd season? Sam Bradford didn't need three seasons. Vince Young didn't need 3 seasons. etc etc. David Ash will be a star at UT like Chris Simms was a star at UT.
Vince won the Heisman as a junior, and really didn't come on until the end of his sophomore season. Listen, I'm not saying Ash is going to win the Heisman. But let's see what he does with his third year before calling him the next Chris Simms. This is THE make or break year for Ash.
Hey Jake, I continue to hear great things about Knight. With OU continuing to give the impression that they intend to be more of a physical running team. My question is, if Knight was to win the job over Bell, will that still be the case, or is that talk wrapped around the idea of having a fullback-sized qb running the ball? BC if knight wins, I can't help but think the offense would lean back towards a spread look again to allow him to run in his own way.
The offense is going to be similar no matter who wins the job. OU is not going to ram Bell between the tackles very often if he's the starter. That's asking to get your starting QB hurt for the season. Physicality tone will not be set by the QB.
Has anyone commented on Quincy R. Play? is the O line saying anything?
Nothing yet. Players haven't been available since Russell arrived. They'll be asked it about this evening, though.
Does Texas scare you this year? There D is back coming off the injury season. They also have a veteran team in general. What are the Sooners going to have to do to win this game?
Not sure if scare is the right word. But if they ever put it altogether, they could be formidable. The talent is there, on both sides of the ball. There have been some intangible things missing from the program, and if they figure those out, look out. Sooners will have to run the ball at a high level. If they can't, this team will be in trouble.
Do you think Stoops names a starting QB by Friday? And which big 12 team surprises this year?
Benjamin making the chat, even in Turkey. Nice hustle. Yes, Stoops will name a starter. I'd say mid week. Baylor is the team that could surprise. They could be 7-0 when OU goes to Waco in early November. If the Bears won that game, then they become a viable conference title contender. Watch out for K-State, too, because, well, they always surprise.
Jake, I agree with Ben. Don't understand the disrespect against my Mountaineers. Our defense should be much better. Our RB situation is also much, much better. Now you explain to me why we won't run all over Texas again like we did in Austin?
Listen, I like what West Virginia added during the offseason in Trickett, Sims, D. Smith, White -- they have some pieces offensively. The safeties will be good, and Bruce could be an All-Big 12 LB type. But look at the schedule. Do you really see WV winning at OU, Baylor, TCU and K-State, then OSU and Texas at home? They would have to win 2-3 of those games to finish higher than where they're being picked. I don't see it.
The WV defense being better isn't the same as having a good defense. Could it be any worse than last year. If last year's offense couldn't do better than 4-5, how is this year's team going to?
Watched the Stoops mic'd up on CFBL last week. Is Stoops usually that vocal during practice or was that made for TV?
He can be pretty vocal behind the scenes.
Will Quincy Russell start at DT for Oklahoma?
Right away? Probably not. By Texas? Probably.
How do you think former LBs PL Lindley and Rashard Favors will perform for OU at DE ?
Will be bit players. Sooners have other guys they like more there. Plus, Favors is at DT, not DE.
Any team in this conference other than TCU boasting about their D being better this year is a JOKE! Its an incredibly hollow statement..
J. Verrett is getting a lot of love nationally, if I'm not mistaken he was on the field when S. Doege torched them for 7 TDs. So was D. Fields not sure I 100% believe the hype of the TCU defense. The lost both LBs and a good DE. Where is all the hype coming from?
I saw Verrett completely lock down Kenny Stills and Stedman Bailey. Fields is big time. TCU's D is legit. ESPN's adjusted EPA had them ranked No. 4 in the country last year, even with the Doege debacle.
Was Kendal Thompson faring better than Trevor Knight before his foot injury and do you think he might see playing time this season?
I think he's probably out of the race, barring something dramatic.
How many Ben's are on this chat??
I count 4.
Oh c'mon, first it's when is "Quincey Russell going to get here?" and now its "when is he going to start?" I'm officially asking that you ban all Quincey Russell questions.
Tried to many times. They still keep coming.
Do you think it was fair for Pachal to be allowed back on the team. How do you explain that to Boykin?
Boykin, theoretically, will still have his chance to QB the Frogs again down the line. Best players play. Part of college football.
How many Freshmen start at OU this season? Setting the O/U at 3...going with 2. Both in the secondary.
Seems about right to me.
Mark it down: Ohio University beats Louisville on Sept 1!
Is the OU line really going to be more physical this year? They were good last year until they played a D line with a pulse - ND, K St, A&M.
The JUCOs should help with that. Savage, St. John, Feo should bring some physicality to what has been a very technically sound front that can really pass protect.
Would be a bad sign.
Has to be a record for longest chat without a Gabe Lynn reference.
So the stance college football should take is you can do drugs just cant sell them?
I'm for second chances. Pachall obviously is on a zero-tolerance basis, though.
Breaking news JT? Are the Bobcats on their way to the Big 12?
With conference realignment, anything is possible.
If Texas Tech is forced to play Davis Webb against SMU, do the ponies pull out a win?
Sure, the Ponies have a shot. SMU quietly had a very strong finish to last season. With the QB issues, this won't be an easy game for Tech.
Plz Plz Plz....answer my question....what is your prediction for TCU/LSU game?
Will have it next week.
Who will be OSU's #1 go-to-guy, Tracey Moore or Josh Stewart?
Stewart will have more catches and yards, Moore will have more TDs. Both guys are No. 1 types. Cowboys have a luxury there.
Will we see Tyrone Swoopes on a regular basis in the Texas offense?
Sounds like if Texas goes to a Wildcat, it will be Overstreet back there.
Hey Jake,I'm hearing so much about Bryce Petty. Guy barely played last year. Why all the hype?
Tools. Supporting cast. Playing time.
any word on keith ford(other than the instagram), and if he redshirts this eason?
Think he redshirts. Too many other backs (Williams, Millard, Clay, Finch, Ross).
Okay Jake, the moment. Who is your Big12 champion this year?
Picking Oklahoma State. Schedule favors them.
Is Trey Metoyer ever going to realize his potential at OU?
what do you see being the 1st big upset of the season involving a big 12 team?
I don't have a composite schedule in front of me, but two games to keep an eye on: TCU at Tech Sept. 12, and OSU at WV Sept. 28. Frogs could be beat up coming out of the LSU game. Crowd in Lubbock will be pumped. WV is capable of luring OSU into an all-out shootout, which would give them a puncher's chance in Morgantown.
Who has the best Defense?
Guys, that's all the time we've got for the chat. Thanks for all the questions. We'll have plenty to discuss next week -- opening week. Everyone have a great evening.
