Greeting everybody. Thanks for joining me. Week 1 is finally upon us. We are all grateful for that. Let's go.
The Jets are in for a long season but last in the ESPN Power Rankings seems like piling on. Despite the efforts of John Idzik to eliminate the circus atmosphere do you think the dysfunctional perception of the team is as real as it is made out to be - especially by the NY media?
It's funny, our Jets beat writer Rich Cimini tweeted that he knew the Jets would be low in the rankings, but this low? It is a fair point. I know the New York media likes to have fun at the Jets expense, but I think there is an internal dynamic that can't be ignored. Idzik is the man now. He didn't hire Rex Ryan or draft Mark Sanchez. That is a problem for both Ryan and Sanchez, and they both certainly seem to know it.
Hello Ashley, do you see Bryce Brown getting 10 + carries a game under the fast break offense the Iggles will run and do you expect his participation to come in a series or individual substitution for a play (ie. when Pats go hurry up they don't seem to substitute rbs - just leave Verenn or Ridley in no matter whether they will run or pass)
When it comes to the Eagles, who really knows yet, right? I don't think Chip Kelly was showing us much in the preseason. I don't know that Brown will get 10-plus a game. He'll get none if he doesn't hold onto the football. I could see him getting a series or two. But I think we are going to see a heavy dose of LeSean McCoy and for good reason.
if you took a poll of jets fans asking if they'd rather keep or fire rex ryan, i think you'd be surprised by the results. most of the jets fans i know (the real ones, not the trolls) really like the guy as a coach.
I like him, too.
Hi Ashley, in 2012 Adrian Peterson missed Eric Dickerson's [Rams] single season rushing record of 2,105 by 9 yards, will he do in 2013? Also he needs two 200-yard rushing games to pass Tiki Barber and OJ Simpson for the most all - time any guesses who'll he do it against?
I know AD wants to top 2,500 yards, which obviously would shatter Dickerson's single-season record. But the Vikings don't want that. They want to see more from their quarterback. They want more of a run-pass balance. I don't foresee Peterson breaking Dickerson's record, but it wouldn't shock me, either. Nothing he does shocks me after last season. As for the 200-yard games record, I'll say he'll do it against Green Bay in Week 8 at home.
Who's your AFC West favorite?
Sorry, I wrote an answer thinking you asked about the NFC West. AFC West? Well that would be Denver.
As for the NFC West, Mike Sando, Dan Graziano and I were discussing this earlier today. Seattle opens the power rankings at No. 2, San Francisco at No. 3. That shows how tight the race is and how highly everyone thinks of those two teams. I bet they split their regular-season match ups, with the home team holding serve.
More likely employed with another NFL team come next fall Rex Ryan, Mark Sanchez, both, or neither?
Both. I'd say without question.
Do you think RGIII will/should just be quiet for now and concentrate on playing football? He seems to be out of control, and a bit of media whore, undermining his coach on purpose. He can't have it both ways. In regards to wanting to play, but then voicing disapproval with how his coach handled things. Also, do you think Dan Reeves is somewhere smiling at the little bit of Karma coming Shanahan's way after what happened in Denver with Elway?
You're probably right about Reeves. That was messy in Denver. As for Griffin, I don't have a problem with him talking as frequently as he does. There is demand for it. And of course he wants to play. He's a competitor. I just wonder if he and Shanahan really are on the same page. They will need to be.
Is it possible that all of the NFC East teams will have a shot of winning the division during the last week or 2 of the season or do you see 1 team eventually separating itself?
Pick the favorite? Can't? Me neither. I feel like it is the Giants because they have the superior quarterback, but they've already had their share of injuries. Maybe Dallas will surprise us this year. I think it could be a pretty close three-way race in December. It's going to depend on the health of Griffin, most likely. I don't think the Eagles will be in the discussion. That's a two-year rebuild on defense. Their secondary is awful. They're changing scheme. They've got players playing new positions. It could be ugly.
Granted he hasn't had the career of Charles Woodson or Champ Bailey, but do you see Antoine Winfield making the hall of fame? He's a well respected player who proved you don't need to be over six feet tall and can play the cornerback position and still be an intimidating force on the field.
I agree he is a well-respected player, but I don't see him getting the HoF nod. That is reserved for the elitist of the elite.
Is it an advantage for the Bears to play the Bengals in the first game of the season, considering there's no real tape of Trestman's offense?
As opposed to playing them in Week 8? Probably, yes. That Bengals defense is nasty. Any little advantage, like the element of surprise, should help. But even so, Chicago's offensive line will be tested right from the jump. Cincinnati should have the best D in the AFC, if not the NFL, and their DC is creative with his blitzes. As I'm sure you know, protecting Cutler hasn't exactly been Chicago's strength in recent years.
question to ashley fox at 3.20 PM who wins THURSDAY broncos or ravens SUNDAY giants or cowboys
I learned last season not to pick against the Ravens. I'll just say that.
How much have the injuries, departures, and suspensions damaged the Broncos chances of making the Super Bowl? Do you think Manning and the Broncos can win the AFC without home field advantage?
Can they win it without home field advantage? Sure. But they lost at home last season in the playoffs, so really it is anybody's guess. The Miller suspension hurts badly, particularly in concert with losing Dumervil, who, by the way, is very, very happy in Baltimore. I saw him two weeks ago, and he has really taken over as a leader on that defense. But Denver is going to be a player because that offense should be potent. They've got the best receivers in football and one of the best QBs. That gives them a distinct advantage.
Hi Ashley, Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson, who have a repeat of their first year or a sophmore jinx? And any first year QB's impress you so far in preseason, I'm looking @ EJ Manuel in Buffalo.
I think all three guys will build off last season because they are all three talented and dynamic in their own ways. The concern with Griffin, obviously, is his knee. Despite what Peterson did last year, recovering from a serious knee injury is not easy and usually it takes guys a full year to get back to where they were. I'm curious to see how Washington uses him -- how much does he run versus how much does he stay in the pocket. I think it will be pretty revealing.
Ashley - which of the "elite" teams do you feel is the most vunerable in the early part of the season?
I would say Denver, given that the Broncos will be without Miller for six games, but look at their first four: Ravens, at Giants, Raiders and Eagles. There are three and maybe four wins right there. Peyton isn't going to lose to his little brother. I think Baltimore is going to give them a harder time than most people think.
If you could have only one, who would you take? Eric Dickerson or Emmit Smith?
What a choice. Wow. I was a kid in North Carolina immersed in ACC hoops when Dickerson was playing. I used to love to watch Smith play. So the long-lost fan in me would say Smith. The journalist says I'd take either. They both did it well for a long time.
Hello Ashley I was hoping you had a update on any injuries and do you see the saints in the playoffs this yeR?YOUR COMMENTS.And Who Make your Clothes I like it.
I don't have Saints injury updates. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility they make the playoffs, although I'm not sure they upgraded that defense much if at all. But having Sean Payton back is, as we learned last year, invaluable. I'm excited to see their opener against the Falcons on Sunday.
over under for the steelers: 9?
Can I pick the even? Nine sounds about right. They lucked out in getting the AFC East, although the NFC North will be no picnic. I still think it is the Ravens' division to lose, but I know Baltimore still sees Pittsburgh as a threat and will as long as the Steelers have Roethlisberger.
Does Ben Rothliesberger make it through the entire season with that suspect offensive line?
And therein lies one of the problems.
Is King trying to intentionally jinx my Patriots? Just once I'd like to go into a season not being one of the favorites
Enjoy it. It's not going to last forever.
Is the Tebow saga finally over/ Or will he resurface again?
I don't think it is over. Not yet. Although I did see he doesn't want to play in a lesser league, which is smart. He doesn't need it.
Who is your Preseason Pick for the Best Offensive & Defensive Rookies in the NFL for 2013?
I can't wait to see Tavon Austin play. He was the best skill position player in the draft. And the Rams need him desperately.
True or False, DeMacus Ware will have less than 10 sacks this season now that his hand will be on the ground full time with 300 lbs offensive tackles leaning on him throughout the season?
They're bigger. He's faster. It's going to be interesting to see how he adjusts to playing a position he hasn't played since college. But the goal is to get to the quarterback. I think he'll continue to do that. So I'll say 10-plus.
Who ya got, Eagles or Skins?
Washington. FedEx Field is going to be jumping with Griffin's return. And as I've mentioned, I don't expect the Eagles defense to be very good. At all. Advantage, Washington.
Were encouraged or discouraged by Christian Ponder this preseason and his ability to take the next step?
I try very hard not to put too much stock in the preseason. But clearly this is a big year for Ponder. The Vikings have given him more toys to play with, more speed, and it will be up to him to prove he can do it. If not, they very well could decide to move on.
Will DeAndre Hopkins finally provide Andre Johnson with the running mate he's been looking for?
That's the idea, right? Goodness knows Johnson could use someone else to keep defenses from cheating over to double him. We will see if Hopkins is that guy. He certainly is surrounded by good, solid veterans who have been doing this awhile. That should help with his development.
Alright everybody. I've got to jump. Thanks for all of the questions. Enjoy Week 1, starting Thursday night. I can't wait. Take care.
