Fantasy Injuries with Stephania Bell

Buzzmaster
  (3:05 PM)

Hold on folks. Stephania is on her way!

Stephania Bell
  (3:11 PM)

Hello folks. How is everyone? I'm finally healthy myself but oh, my is it ever busy on the injury front...I KNOW you have some questions, hope to have some answers for you.

Ron (WV)

Halladay back with philly on ??? Start him right away or wait and see?

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Ron: I want to see how he looks in this second rehab start. The Phillies indicated there might only be 2 starts but the issue was his velocity. Might want to wait and see. I think he gets stronger as he returns first few outings.

Chris (NYC)

You seem pretty comfortable with Arian Foster's injury situation based on yesterday's article. Would you still put him at #2 overall?

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Chris: Good assessment. And that's how I felt. Yesterday. Today is big because the Texans were expected to re-evaluate him and I want to see if he's working his way back to practice or if they're holding him out longer. If he's out another week, I'm getting a little more nervous.

Andrew (Hartford, CT)

Arian Foster...tell me something positive! I drafted him second and I missed out on Ben Tate

Stephania Bell
  (3:16 PM)

Andrew: The positive is you have provided a lesson for those who haven't drafted yet. Get Ben Tate. Probably as solid a handcuff as you'll find and if Foster does go out, he's an excellent plug-in.

Josh S. (Philly)

Does Victor Cruz play week 1? And is this an injury that can linger throughout the season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:18 PM)

Josh: Too soon to make that call. Just heard sound where he says he feels much better today, always a good sign, but I've seen these bruised heels cause guys to miss a game or two during the season because running is too painful. You won't see him the rest of the preseason with the hope that's enough time for Week 1.

Billy (NY)

Are Britt's knees bothering him again? I thought reports said he was injury-free...

Stephania Bell
  (3:20 PM)

Billy: You always have to evaluate a player's current health status in the context of his entire health history. And Britt's history is not good. Given that he had surgery on both knees last year and his reconstructed knee required an additional scope, you would have to assume he could run into trouble. He has talent but this will always be a concern.

B Mand (Sarasota, FL)

Is Broyles healthy enough to count on, or do you see him missing games throughout the season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

B Mand: Have to remember he's still recovering from his second ACL. They're giving him rest days during practice and no one knows for sure what the season will hold. But he's been so impressive in camp that his upside may balance out the missed time.

rosie jayne (FSU)

Hey, I asked a question about Tony Stewert and his injury last week and got no answer. Does that mean you know nothing about nascar injuries or you do not like Tony Stewert?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

Rosie: No, it just means that I probably didn't see it amidst hundreds of questions. Obviously his status has been determined but after the surgery to insert a rod in his leg, the same one he uses on the accelerator (not to imagine the challenges of getting in and out of the car), it was never likely he'd return. He should be fine for next year.

Benjamin (Denver)

Is Cueto going to pitch again this year?

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Benjamin: Possibly, but not in time to help fantasy owners. I wrote an update on him whch should have just posted on the site if you're interested in more detail.

MW (NJ)

Bobby Parnell!!! Will he be back this year?

Stephania Bell
  (3:27 PM)

MW: Not necessarily, but the door is still open. The epidurals appear to have helped and he's making progress but there's nothing new.

Brint (Wichita)

Tell me David Wright will be back this year. I need him for the playoffs Stephania

Stephania Bell
  (3:28 PM)

Brint: I could tell you that...but I might be lying. They will rehab him with the goal being that he could return but as hamstrings go, any setback changes the timeline. It's very iffy.

David (San Mateo, CA)

What's the latest on Howard Kendrick?

Stephania Bell
  (3:31 PM)

David: Probably not activated right away. Sounds like he's been doing some hitting but it will likely be a few extra days, maybe late this week. My bigger concern after these knee hyperextension injuries is how susceptible they often are to re-injury with slides, baserunning.

Dan (Moraga, CA)

Is Matt Moore in your lineup for his first start off the DL, or are you waiting to see how it goes?

Stephania Bell
  (3:33 PM)

Dan: We've still got another 10-14 days before we see him so I'm not ready to commit. Still a little concerned about the nature of the injury - despite all the reassurances - not necessarily because I'm expecting a big blowout, but from a performance standpoint. Can he step in and return to form immediately or is this going to affect him in that manner?

daniel (fort worth)

what is the difference between sprain & strain? which takes longer to recover

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Sprain = ligament injury. Strain = muscle or tendon. Recovery time depends on degree. Grade 1 is mild, usually 2 weeks or less, no substantial tearing. Grade 2 is moerate, wide range of recovery time, more tissue damage. Grade 3 is severe, generally represents a complete tear, often season-threatening.

Roger (Coachella, CA)

Steph, what is up with your NINERS WR's? With all that you have said about Foster, if he fell to pick #8 is it a no-brainer to draft him?

Stephania Bell
  (3:35 PM)

Well Roger, we have a new one. I like the Baldwin addition. And yes, I'm taking Foster at #8 - unless I get REALLY bad news between now and draft time.

john (dallas, tx)

any word on the mri from levon bell?

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

john: Not yet.

Billy (KC)

Hey Stephania. Last week you were cautious about taking Jamaal Charles at 4th overall because of the foot. Do you feel differently now?

Stephania Bell
  (3:37 PM)

Billy: I'm not concerned. I don't remember being hugely concerned before but it may have been before we had the details. Injury was to a tendon on the side of his foot, a mild strain, NOT a midfoot injury as the panicked Twitter world feared. Happy with him at #4.

Nick (Omaha)

Cargo is expected to swing a bat tomorrow. What is the best case scenario on when we might see him back on the field?

Stephania Bell
  (3:39 PM)

Nick: Best case? Probably a few days. Truth be told, I have no idea what they're planning as I'm not sure they know. They really want to see how he looks swinging the bat after essentially going two weeks without even picking one up. One session won't tell them everything but it might help them lay out a plan.

Conor (Washington, DC)

I know you must be getting questions about Le'Veon Bell. Let me pose mine this way: hypothetically, if it is a lisfranc, is he done for the year, or do you think we see him halfway through the season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Conor: The thing with Lisfranc injuries is that there are many variants. It all depends on the degree of ligament injury, whether there is actial separation of the bones, any dislocation, etc. Sounds like his was not the MOST severe but some of the subtle ones can still sideline guys for multiple weeks. Impossible to say at this point in his case.

Matt Walter (SF)

Are you worried about Doug Martin or Maurice Jones Drew?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Matt: No, to both.

Eric (NY)

Jose Bautista left todays game vs the Yankees with an undisclosed injury. Do you know what happened to him and if so, how long he may be sidelined?

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

Eric: According to a report from MLB.com, it was left hip soreness. No idea of severity or specifically what's ailing him.

Chris (FL)

Is there any new word on Grilli? What's the likelihood the Pirates bring him back before the playoffs?

Stephania Bell
  (3:45 PM)

Chris: Sounds like he could be back in early September (assuming bullpens, etc go well) so...

Jesse (Charleston, SC)

Based on Matt Forte's injuries last season, do you think he's a risky option to play all 16 games this year?

Stephania Bell
  (3:47 PM)

Jesse: I think you have to look at his overall health history and that's been pretty strong. ALL RB are at risk. It's the riskiest position for injury in my book because of the contact, their size, etc. So I just plan my strategy as if I do not expect any back to last all season and hope I pick some backups who will see some time.

Brian (Minneapolis)

Any word on how Rasmus is recovering from his oblique strain? Do you expect him back when first eligible or think it will be longer?

Stephania Bell
  (3:49 PM)

Brian: They're downplaying it and make it sound like he could be back doing activities soon, although it may be a while longer before they let him swing the bat. I'd be surprised if he's only out the minimum. That is exceptionally rare when it comes to obliques unless they are very minor.

Dan (Boston)

Stephania: Any chance that Matt Kemp makes an appearance and contributes in September? The latest reports haven't been promising. Thanks for the great work all season long.

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Dan: Thank you. And I certainly expect him back in September. The highest level activities are often the most challenging when you're dealing with a Grade 2 sprain, which is what he has. He's actually done pretty well but it has taken a while to show he can do the highest level things without issue. I would guess he's going to be returning somewhere around the first week of September, as long as there is no setback.

Anthony (Cali)

Are you still worried about Dez Bryant's health this year? He looks like a beast this preseason.

Stephania Bell
  (3:54 PM)

Anthony: Same concerns. He will get banged up and it's just a matter of degree as to whether it forces him out or not. Last year he was able to gut it out for 16 games. He's always a threat with his talent but he's also risky.

Buchholz (60 Day DL)

I know the move to the 60-Day was just some savvy roster movement but what's the word on Clay Buchholz, how does he look and what should we expect?

Stephania Bell
  (3:55 PM)

Throwing a sim game tomorrow. Imagine if that goes well, he progresses through the rehab game progression. Probably looking at a couple weeks from now if all goes without a hitch.

Marcus (Miami)

What are your thoughts about when Dan Uggla will play in a game? Is he still a guy I should stash on my team? Thanks, and great work this year.

Stephania Bell
  (3:56 PM)

Marcus: Thank you. Apparently taking BP this Thursday and hopes to return when eligible. Why not stash him? He'll be seeing better (seriously).

CarGo 2.0 (Help)

Whats the word on Carlos Gomez? Back this week? Does this hurt his SB potential ROS???

Stephania Bell
  (3:59 PM)

Sounds like he's been doing really well with the rehab and he might even be back before this weekend. Given all the things he's already been doing in rehab, I would not anticipate it really impacting his SB potential.

Jake (Cleveland)

Any update on Randall Cobb's bicep injury?

Stephania Bell
  (4:02 PM)

Jake: He's not been practicing so there isn't much to update. THe Packers have expressed no concern about his availability for Week 1. MY hope is that he doesn't have a labral tear which could become problematic as the season wears on.

Austin (Philadelphia)

Hey Stephania, Just wanted to ask about Ben Revere's status and if he will return to the team this season. Thanks for your hard word, and GO PHILLS

Stephania Bell
  (4:03 PM)

Austin: Thanks. He's just now cleared to bear weight. I suppose the door isn't closed but he has a really long way to go to make a return.

Stephania Bell
  (4:04 PM)

Thanks everyone for coming. Have to leave the room. Appreciate all the great questions and will be doins some more player updates in our draft kit as the week goes on.
