Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (1:59 PM)

Thanks for stopping by to chat. Let's not waste any time and get started ...

Bernard (Philly)

Given the injury to Heath Miller, the offseason loss of Mike Wallace and the inconsistent play of the offense in the preseason, would the Steelers have been better served drafting Tyler Eiffert in the first round rather than Jarvis Jones?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:01 PM)

The Steelers couldn't have gone wrong with either Eifert or Jarvis Jones. You can make the case that the Steelers' biggest need on defense was improving the pass rush and generating more turnovers, which is what Jones did in college. In the Steelers' mind, Miller should be back by October and the team can get by with David Paulson.

tommy_sobo (South Baltimore)

What does the future look like for Tyrod Taylor? This is a guy that could easily be a starter for a number of NFL teams. Being in the shadow Of Joe "Mr. Hot n Cold" Flacco, where do you see him ending up?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:03 PM)

I wouldn't say Taylor could be a starter for a number of NFL teams. He's a backup who can present different looks in the read-option. When I watch practice, Taylor's lack of height really stands out. I'm not sure he can be a consistently good pocket passer when it comes to third downs.

Carl (Long Beach, CA)

What's up J.Hensley! Word is that LeVeon Bell's MRI requires a second medical opinion on his mid foot injury. Should Steeler Nation be relieved in your opinion that they want a 2nd medical opinion? And finally, Do you think they can have a decent running game with J Dwyer as he looks a lot more in shape this year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:04 PM)

A second opinion suggests to me that the injury is serious. So, I don't think anyone should be relieved. As far as Jonathan Dwyer, he's always looked good in flashes. He proved last year that he can't be a starter because he's not consistent enough.

Wes (Lake Side)

What do you think the Cleveland Browns record will be? and how do they stack up compared to the rest of the AFC north?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:05 PM)

Official predictions will be revealed next Wednesday on Sorry for the commercial interruption.

Dan S (Pasadena, CA)

Hey JH,Do you see the Bengals keeping Orson Charles AND John Conner? Especially if they are going to be running 2 TE sets? Thanks!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:06 PM)

I expect only one to make it. And the way the Bengals are running two tight end formations, they really don't need a traditional fullback like Conner.

Kevin (Baltimore, MD)

Do you see Aaron Mellette making the roster and if so, do you see him contributing in any significant way to the offense?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:06 PM)

Practice squad for Mellette.

bob. dayton. oh [via mobile]

Do you think the Bengals are a bit overrated considering 7 of their 10 wins were against the browns jags chargers raiders chiefs eagles and a gimme against the ravens at the end of the season. Doesnt playing teams like these inflate statistics like def and off rankings. Just tempering expectations.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:09 PM)

If the Bengals surprisingly struggle, this point becomes more valid. This was also the team that won at Pittsburgh in a must-win situation and won at the Redskins, who won the NFC East. That's why I don't consider the Bengals to be overrated. They're one of the top 10 teams in the NFL this year.

Harry (North Carolina)

Do the Cleveland Browns have a serious shot at going .500 this season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:10 PM)

That should be the goal. With their schedule, I'm skeptical of them finishing with a winning record even if the team has improved. And, with how the past five seasons have gone, reaching .500 would be considered a success. I would be interested if the Browns stick with Weeden if he gets the team to eight wins.

pj (midlo)

who do you expect Weedon to lean on in the passing game until Gordon returns

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:11 PM)

Jordan Cameron will pick up the slack for big plays, Davone Bess will be his security blanket.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

True or False, Giovanni Bernard will have more impact as a rookie than Tyler Eifert?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:13 PM)

False. But I'm not very confident in saying so. Eifert will be big in the red zone this year. I saw Dalton targeting him in the end zone a lot because of Eifert's height. He would be a great rebounder in basketball with how he blocks out defenders. That being said, Bernard will make an impact as well.

Kyle (Ohio)

Margus Hunt looks like a fish out of water. When do you think he'll be ready to be a contributor on defense?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

Hunt will be a contributor on special teams as a rookie with his ability to block kicks and run down the field at his size. He's a work in progress on defense. Coaches are always taking extra time with him as far as technique.

Matt (Maryland)

Do you think Terrance Cody's struggles last year were due mainly to his injury? If so do you think he can be a legitimate contributor for the Ravens defensive line rotation this season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:16 PM)

I could see Cody being part of the rotation. But honestly, he never looks to be in shape to me. I know defensive tackles are space-eaters, but I feel Cody would be better if he was lighter.

Bernard (Philly)

Next time you visit the Steelers and have a chance to talk to Haley, tell him to let Ben air it out more and go no-huddle more often. The QB has lead the team to 3 Super Bowl appearances and it drives me crazy the coaching staff won't let him have more influence over the offensive game plan!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:18 PM)

The reason why the Steelers don't want Big Ben to air it out as much is because that increases the chances of him getting hit in the pocket. And, with how this offensive line has played, you want him to get rid of the ball quicker. I agree that Roethlisberger is at his best throwing deep. I saw him connect with Emmanuel Sanders deep downfield a handful of times in training camp. But the Steelers are going to pick their spots on when to do it.

zack (baltimore)

Do you see Arthur Brown competing for a starting linebacker spot this year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

Right now, Brown is going to see time on the nickel defense. His speed and athleticism suits coverage. He'll work his way up to playing early downs and stopping the run.

Travis (Indiana)

I'm excited about how they've looked so far, but the Browns are clearly still in a building mode. Is there any chance that Campbell will provide them with trade opportunities over the next few months? If so, what's the ceiling on what we could expect to get for him?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:20 PM)

Sorry no trade for Campbell. Teams weren't exactly busting down his door in free agency this year.

Adam (Bay Area)

What is your prediction for the Ravens' WRs 2-4?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

In no particular order: Stokley, Doss, Reed and either LaQuan Williams or Deonte Thompson. The Ravens like Thompson, but he has to get on the field. He had a couple of drops in the preseason opener that didn't help his cause.

Bryan (Mobile)

Jamison, lets be honest, the Steelers are continuing to look like the 2012 team. If the Steelers continue to struggle this season, could this Tomlin finally be on the hot seat?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:23 PM)

It will take a couple more mediocre seasons before the seat gets warm for Tomlin. The Steelers stuck with Cowher during back-to-back non-playoff seasons. So history says there won't be a quick hook for Tomlin.

Brian (Dover)

Bryan, negative. 3 coaches in 4 decades says something.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:23 PM)

Andy (in Hagerstown)

As far as Cody goes isn't round a shape?!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:24 PM)

Ha. I stand corrected.

Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

The Bengals are loaded. If they fail to have postseason success this year who's to blame?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:26 PM)

The usual suspects: Dalton, Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown.

Brian (Dover)

Is Kirby Wilson back to 100%?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:27 PM)

Not sure exactly what percentage the RB coach is at right now. I saw him at camp and he looked to be doing well. I didn't have time to chat with him, though.

Adam (DC)

Who will have a bigger impact this season: Shamarko Thomas or Markus Wheaton?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:28 PM)

Markus Wheaton. He should be the No. 3 WR by the end of the season. The only way Thomas sees time on defense is injuries.

Vic (sunny Anaheim, CA)

Will another 8-8 season in PIT mean walking papers for Tomlin?... FO?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:30 PM)

Sounds like some Black and Gold fans are already predicting another 8-8 season after two preseason games.

Mike Gaston US Army [via mobile]

If my Bengals do not make it to the AFC Title game, do you think there will be changes made at the quarterback position?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:31 PM)

The Bengals haven't won a playoff game since 1990. A postseason win would be a step in the right direction. You can't say AFC Championship Game-or-bust for Dalton and the Bengals.

Greg (Columbus)

If Bell is out for significant time, what rookie would you pick to have the most impact in the division?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:32 PM)

Eifert or Bernard for the Bengals.

Mike (Akron)

Will Weeden have more ints than TD,s this season

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:33 PM)

I would bet yes. If he does throw more interceptions than touchdowns, he won't be the starter next season.

Eric (Cincinnati, OH)

Other than AJ Green, who do you think is the player the Bengals can least afford to lose? Could it be Reggie Nelson due to the questions at the other safety position?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:35 PM)

Nelson would be among a group of guys they could least afford. Others are Whitworth, Atkins and Hall.

Ben (afton va)

If Dickson can play and Clark can play.. does shianco (SP) stay on team or is he cut when the roster is reduced.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:36 PM)

If Dickson and Clark are healthy, I see Visanthe Schiancoe getting cut. Bajema is the blocking tight end and would be the third tight end.

Jo Jo (Crownsville)

Who has the best mascot?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:36 PM)

Brownie the Elf???

Ben (afton va)

The Ravens believe in Jimmy Smith. I'm not sold. Thoughts?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:37 PM)

I haven't been sold on Jimmy Smith, and team officials have told me repeatedly that I'm wrong. I don't see much intensity from Smith. We'll see ...

Adam (DC)

What exactly is the roll of the new Steelers reporter here at ESPN?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:39 PM)

Scott Brown will cover the Steelers on a daily basis. I will cover the Browns and Bengals until we have reporters in place with those teams.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:39 PM)

Thanks for all of the great questions. I hope everyone has a great rest of the week. Talk to you next week.
