Welcome! It's the fastest hour in golf. Tiger's in the mix, NY fans are polite, and my expert picks this week PROVE that "expert" is a relative term!! haha Tiger gonna win? If not then who? And the big question... Anybody know how the Web.com Tour series works? Just curious! BRING IT!!!
what players have reputations as the proverbial foul mouth sailors of the PGA - we always see Tiger but unfortunately every one of his shots has camera coverage whereas others don't have that for the most part
It would be a MUCH shorter list to say which players never used foul language!
Hi MC. I mentioned a few chats ago I'm a marshal at next week's LPGA Safeway Classic here in Portland. I know it's highly unlikely at a womens' event, but if anyone shouts "IN THE HOLE!", or "MASHED POTATOES!", can I throttle him? Or maybe I can sic Suzann Pettersen on him- her glare can intimidate anyone!
Kick them out!
Jordan Spieth deserves a President's Cup spot. He is the 10th-ranked American on the 2013 money list. If you ignore 2012 (which is fair given his age), he's make the team on his own. This is exactly what the Captain's picks are designed for. Get him some good experience before the REAL pressure's on at the Ryder Cup.
Completely agree, and it's not like the Presidents Cup has been a hotly contested event the last few... EVER!
Hey Michael. What in the world has been the problem with Rory? Granted, he has played much better lately but he doesn't look the same.
He struggled to get used to the golf ball which then got in his head and his swing. Then put all the media questions on top of that and it's an extremely difficult mountain to climb back on top of.
Do the players stay at the course during a long delay?
at a venue like this, yes. Can't risk leaving and then getting stuck trying to get back. At Doral or a resort where they can stay on site, some guys do go back to their rooms
Hi Mc Do you think tiger will tee off at 3pm central time and how does the weather look for the weekend?
weather looks good for the rest of today, Tiger tees off just after 4pm EST it'll be close but I don't think he'll finish
On Rory, we all agree he's a talent. But he had one win on tour in 2010, one win in 2011, then four in 2012. Maybe 2012 was an anomaly?
No one wins four times including two majors by accident
Do you have any idea why the american team was crushed by the europeans?
None. This last time it was the individual matches we lost, in the past it was the team stuff. Makes no sense
Who on the tour would make a great Batman (late 30s-40s)? What do you think about Ben Affleck?
Would rather have an unknown play the part, but Affleck may be pretty good. On tour if someone was gonna be Batman it'd have to be Dustin Johnson. Millionaire playboy (FORMER!!) fits the mold
Who is your pick to make the biggest jump this week?
Camilo has the best chance but watch Morgan Hoffman
Who do you pair with Tiger at the Presidents Cup? I say Freddie needs to pick the guy who think it's no big deal: Dufner.
I'd say Speith. Get him used to the moment
Hello Mr. Collins, I consider Jack Nicklaus' 18 major titles, 18 second-place major finishes, and seventy-three tour wins. But when I also see these four "other" acheivements, in my opinion, Jack will, and must, forever remain ahead of Tiger, regardless of whether or not Tiger reaches nineteen. Have a look at these: 1) As a sixteen year old amateur, Jack WON the Ohio open. 2) As an amateur in 1960, Jack finished T-13th at the Masters, and, 2nd at that legendary US Open at Cherry Hills. 3) As an amatuer in 1961, Jack finished T-7th at the Masters, and T-4th at the US Open. 4) Played in 154 consecutive Majors for which he was eligible. That's 38-1/2 years. Played in 142 consecutive Majors, period, without qualifiers. That's 35-1/2 years. Please tell us what you think ? And thank you for your time.
In my opinion the more reasons you need to try and keep someone #1 in your mind, the better argument there is for someone to take over the spot. Tiger's not done yet but to say Jack will be best no matter what means you won't even accept the possibility and that's sad. Keep an open mind and never be afraid to stop learning
What do caddies and players do to kill time during rain delays?? Do they leave the course?
Caddies won't leave the course, they just hang out wherever the caddie area is.
MC, I had no idea how the Web.com series worked, until I read the wonderful article Mr. Harig published about it. ESPN plug alert! I think it will take some getting used to, but it seems like a better system than the crap shoot Q-School used to be.
Except when does cinderella get to come to the ball? I do like the way the series is set up but there has to be other opportunities for guys to get a tour card.
Nah replace Stricker with another good putter: snedeker and woods would be untouchable
I've always thought Snedecker would e a good match-up for Tiger. Tiger can hit the iron shots, and Sneds can putt
Do you think that the PGA WILL eventually kick those "MASHED POTATO" wangs out? I hope so. It's just brutal. Is there the manpower at tourneys to do it?
I did a video on an easy solution that NO ONE suggested. Let me see if it posted...
Yep... here's the video to fix those idiots that yell: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9594736
What tip would you give to a beginning golfer to help improve their game?
Go get a proper lesson for grip and alignment. Then spend every free hour you have at the range. Easier to find an hour for the range than 4 hours for a round and you'll get better faster!
According to Poulter's Twitter feed, they kicked someone out at the Barclay's for yelling "Baba Booey"
Yeah, but then there was another report that said the guy never had to leave.
I'm OK with Snedeker or Kuchar with Tiger. Others might be too young, too nervous, or too Phil.
My buddy maintains that momentum is a myth, claiming ?You will either play well on the next hole or you won?t, it doesn?t matter what happens in between?. Harris English went 4 under through his first 6 holes before he ran out of daylight, then this morning went 5 over to finish his first round at +1. Momentum? fact or fiction?
Tell your buddy to talk to a pro golfer before making a horribly incorrect statement like that. Momentum is HUGE in golf. How many times when a guy is playing well does he hit a bad shot but still escape unscathed. Yet if he's playing bad the same shot will be an automatic double on the scorecard. that IS momentum
I see a lot of low numbers out there already, if these events are supposed to crown a champion why are the course conditions so easy? Wouldn't you want the conditions in each of these tournaments to be challenging?
Mother nature cannot be controlled. And the guys at the top of the leader board would be there regardless
I personally feel the addition of Stevie on Adam Scott's bag has changed everything for him...and Tiger has not won a major since him - any chance Tiger and Stevie will work together again?
never gonna happen
Have the conditions made the course easier or the changes by Kite?
Have you gotten any PGA flack for your commentary about the idiocy of the no caddy race policy and their supposed "safety" concern for caddies?
No, actually the opposite. My wife was asking last night why my phone was buzzing so much. It was because caddies and players were sending me messages. Haven't gotten any negative feedback. Probably because everything I said was true.
Dude, don't tell Tiger you selected DJ for batman
Tiger would make a cool Batman too!
Shout out to myself!!!
Man enough to admit you're in your mom's basement... sure why not!
Did the PGA purposely avoid the NFL opening weekend because they know they will get killed in ratings?
Yes, and players hated the short week in Chicago.
Recently heard Phil say (admit?) that the Tiger Slam was the best accomplishment in golf ever. He said something along the lines of, "it's so good that it's almost impossible to even fathom." His candor surprised me considering the Phil-Tiger dynamic. However, after some thought I realized perhaps Phil is simply more secure saying something like that given he is now a 5 time major champion himself.
Phil has always been comfortable talking about how Tiger plays. Smart by him cause it put less pressure on him to out perform Tiger, which he's been doing in majors lately!
Ok maybe I should of been more clear, why not set up the course similar to how they do in Majors???Long rough and much narrower fairways...the course set up just seems easy for what these tournaments reflect.
US Open style golf is ok once or twice a year, I wanna see birdies.
What happens to professional golf when Tiger retires? I'm talking big picture things (purses, tv contracts, fan interest, etc.)
Did the NBA fold after Jordan? Yet we still ask, "Is _____ the next Jordan?" Golf will be the same. Then there will come another... feel like I should say, "THE PROPHECY HAS FORETOLD!" (James Earl Jones voice) HAHAHA!!!
What happens to professional golf when you retire?
It's not as much fun! Nah, same thing, just to be remembered would be epic for me.
Is a caddy's % usually max at 10% for a win, or have you seen a bigger share?
never seen bigger than 10% for a win
MC will we be caught up by tomomorrow with the groups finishing? We all know Tiger's group, and those in the same time frame are not finishing today. guess the cut will help?
Yeah they'll be on track and finish round 3 on time.
How many states have you played a round of golf in? Some day I'd like to hit all 50. Currently at 11. Long ways to go!
I've got the east coast (except for Maine and New Hampshire), then a few in the south and a couple in the west but I like the bucket list!
How do caddies actually get paid? Does the player just write them a check each week?
yep. Player writes a check usually Sunday night after the round. Most guys check the finish in the scoring trailer.
MC is never retiring. He needs to put two kids through college!!!
Pre-paid, I ain't stupid!!
How much do tour guys usually wager on Mon, Tues practice rounds??
Depends, anywhere from $50 to $5K... have heard some big numbers after presses and such but it's all second hand info.
NO WAIT!!! There's NO gambling at Bushwood!!! hahaha
Does that change for the bigger names, or longer relationships? You'd think Bones would have direct deposit by now. And Joe Lacava would be walking around with some big checks
in some cases it might but that would be very rare
Caddies play much dice? If so, favorite games?
No dice. Used to have poker tourneys but now it's mostly Words with Friends stuff... unless we're in Vegas or near a casino
Were you ever a regular caddie at a country club?
never, only a tour caddie. don't know if I could have ever been a CC caddie
Another TW on the PGA? Both from a playing perspective and cultural impact? No way. Not for another generation at least. Golf and basketball are much different.
Not when you think about the impact globally that both Tiger and Jordan had on their sport. And guess what people said about Nicklaus?! What did people say about Ruth? Every so often someone comes along and does what everyone says couldn't be done. You may not like it, but you better accept it or you'll be a bitter old person.
Evan (DC) - When TW retires, purses will dwindle to PBA standards, Sponsors like Swatch instead of Rolex; National Bank of Solame Texas instead of Wells Fargo; and SmartCar instead of Lexus. All future talented golfers will quit and become fry cooks at McDonald's. SMH ...Tiger ISN'T golf, people...he's just this generation's Jack.
Which caddy is the best stick currently & previously?
Damon Green might be the best right now. All time? Not sure.
We will probably see a golf talent as good as if not better than Tiger. But they'll have a harder time matching his numbers. As fields get deeper numbers get harder to post. It's harder for Tiger than Jack, was harder for Jack than Hogan etc. That's sports too.
Tiger just relearned how to win on tour consistantly. Safe to say reeling off majors is the next step??
HUGE step but, yes, that's next
Asking for another Tiger is too greedy. Golf will be fine with a few Phil clones, Rory clones, and a Asian superstar ('sup, Matsuyama).
If that's where golf is headed... we're all safe and in good hands. Just so you know, Phil is older than Tiger.
Zack Johnson's guy Damon Green. Kip Henley won Big Break.
Yeah, but Kip played bad in tour tournaments and said he'd never do it again. Damon has played GREAT on the Champions Tour and had a top ten in a major I think
Stink eye has a putt for the course record!
8 birdies and no bogies! 63. NICE!!
Favorite to win this week two days in? Sticking with Tiger?
BTW love Jordan Spieth in his presser saying whatever number of victories Tiger got to, that's what he'd aim at because he wants to be the best. Hope we don't start hounding him about it now ever week :)
I hope not either but the sentiment is dead on! Love it.
Well that went way too fast! Have a great weekend everyone. We'll do it again Monday. Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel!Take Care.MC
